I'm torn between a Tremere Poker Player and a  Nosferatu IT person. I feel like the Nosferatu will be more useful to the group but I could be wrong about that.

I'm just throwing out ideas at the moment.  1999 is also the era of YDK, The Matrix, Hackers.  I have a lot of nostalgia for 90s computer culture.

Tremere is one of the strongest clans in VtM thanks to their Thaumaturgy. You have a lot of paths and rituals you can choose from and they're generally fairly varied too although most people just build them to fill a classic nuker role. And man can they nuke unprepared opponents...

A Nossie built around computers, technology, recon, intel gathering and the like would be quite useful as well and could provide more opportunities to interact with everyone else if (s)he'll become sort of the "brain of the Keeping The Hood operation". Personally I find them harder to play on account of restricted locations or limited interactions with the Kine but I was told they're a lot of fun once you learn to deal with such inconveniences.

And thinking of Tremere and 1999 I just considered the fun I might've had if Assamites were playable too. Particularly the interactions with any Tremere neighbors >:)

Malcolm Peak, LA District Attorney Higher Up - Malcolm was Sarah's supervisor when she interned with the prosecutors. He is very interested in her coming to work for him, as she did some of the best work they'd ever seen and worked many more hours than asked, and he is also very interested in getting in her pants. He's willing to do almost anything for her attention, especially the flirtatious type, and continued interest in coming back someday, provided nothing could get him in trouble.

Professor Susan Caulder - Sarah's finance professor that considers Sarah one of the brightest students she's had in years, and hopes to steer her towards a lucrative career in private business. She has many contacts with financial companies and spends a lot of time with rich donors to the school. She regards Sarah's public interest work as a phase that will pass once reality hits her. She has a very tit for tit approach to favors, but there are always things that a brilliant and beautiful young woman like Sarah can do for her, such as interview with a certain firm and take their job offers seriously, or help her wow a donor. The professor is the type that negotiates harder with people she respects, and she respects Sarah quite a lot.

Shaquille X - Shaq X is a community organizer and activist, although which community that is exactly is a bit vague. He is well respected and regarded. However, in doing some volunteer work for him Sarah discovered he pockets rather more of the money that he fund-raises than he lets on, something that she only caught him on because the  man assumed she was some mix of not smart enough to catch or it spineless enough to do what he said. He was very wrong. A very tense conversation followed with raises voices, threats, and finally an appeal to the fact that without him nobody would do this work at all. That argument made Sarah not call the feds, and she has rather mixed feelings about it. Still, if you need a protest or a boycott whipped up at a moment's notice, or attention drawn to a cause that isn't getting it's signal up there, there's nobody better, and she's kept his number around just in case she ever needs to cash in the favor she feels he owes her. He may feel differently, but given what she knows he's not going to ignore her call either.

Celeste Gagne - Sarah's rival at Kappa Kappa Gamma. Not an unfriendly one, but the two were always the best of the best and ended up having some interesting time navigating the sycophants and opportunities such status attracted. The two are not enemies by any stretch, but it isn't exactly right to say they're friends either. Competitors with a healthy mutual respect for each other is more the right atmosphere between them. When they worked together, they are unstoppable. Celeste also turned down several post-college school opportunities is now an up and coming triple threat celebrity, big in the local scene and just waiting for a hit single or breakout movie role to catapult her to the super stardom everyone who has met her knows she'll have some day.

Calvin Broadus - On one alcohol drenched college night that Sarah doesn't want to talk about, some of her sisters ended up mingling with a group of Death Row artists when the gangster rappers were partying at the same Santa Monica club as the Kappas. These things happen in LA ya know? Yada yada yada she has Snoop Dogg's number now. How? Oh geez look at the time gotta move on...

History:
Sarah is a SoCal native, her family lives in Pasadena and is pretty solidly in that amorphous realm of comfort known as the upper middle class. Her father is an accountant who owns his own practice, her mother a software engineer for Microsoft. She has two younger brothers, one of whom is constantly about to be kicked out of the Coast Guard, the other of whom is following various techno groups around on tour and sometimes calling his parents for money. Sarah inherited all of the ambition and composure in her family.

A tomboy as a little girl, Sarah's favorite movie was The Karate Kid and she credits her early years with martial arts as where she gets her competitive streak from. At some point toward the end of elementary school she realized she couldn't roundhouse her way through life and turned to hobbies more typical for a girl in the 80s, but those also fell by the wayside as she got to high school.

Starting from a freshman she was active in student body politics. In going around the various cliques and crowds at her public school stumping for votes she got a very real sense of how much better she had it than a lot of kids, and started to become interested in charity and volunteer work. Without really thinking about where it would lead, she organized food drives, donations, and other charitable activities at her school, many of which made the local paper and helped her get a full ride to UCLA, which her parents were extremely happy about.

Sarah excelled at UCLA and continued her involvement in student politics and charity work. A member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, she made many useful contacts with the best and the brightest over academic debates, passionate volunteer work, and all night parties alike. Sarah found her true talent was building coalitions, getting people to reach across lines and divides, and bringing together rivals and enemies to work for the same purpose. She applied for various scholarships to law school, thinking this was where her path was taking her. This led to her being noticed by the Ventrue. One of the elders of LA had taken to poaching viable candidates for joining the vampire elite from the best schools, and one of the scholarships was granted was one of the Elder's selection methods. Unbeknownst the Sarah, the kindred had their eye on her from that moment on. Sarah continued to organize and advocate for various causes through political means throughout her college life. She was more the type to show up to a city council meeting in a skirt suit than the type to stand outside and protest, and she felt she got much better results this way. She interned with both the prosecutor's office and a high end financial consulting firm, with both organizations desperately wanting her to work for them full time after graduation.

However, she got a different offer. Through a series of negotiations and revelations, Sarah was embraced. True to the style of her sire, it was not done in a dark alley mugging, but after intense negotiation and a signed contract. Could her sire have just taken her? Yes, and he made that very clear. But he didn't, partly because he felt that way was antiquated and that civilized kindred didn't embrace without consent, but mostly because it just tickled him so much that a kine had been offered immortality and come back with terms, in a tabbed binder no less. It was the first time he'd really laughed since Charlie Chaplin.

Sarah was, as she always seemed to be in life, given more of a free reign than most in her situation would be. And, again as she always seemed to do, this was rewarded. She made deals and compromises on behalf of her sire that more than doubled the growth of his investments, all while improving the public image of several of his companies through volunteering and organization. When blithely accused of raising his profits just so that she could funnel them into her social crusades, she simply nodded and confirmed it. This earned the second genuine laugh within a year, and her Sire started to wonder if he was going delirious.

However this early success was short lived. It turned out Sarah's sire didn't have quite the stability within the Ventrue that he thought, and due to a series of plots and schemes that Sarah is genuinely completely in the dark about, her sire was - she still isn't sure if the truth is he was kidnapped, exiled, or allowed to go on vacation. In any case he's gone and she can't reach him, and the Prince came for her next. She was waiting for him - neatly put together in a smart skirt suit with a binder in hand. A series of proposals of how to turn this unpleasant situation into a positive for everyone. The Prince started to see what her Sire had seen in her.

Although it wasn't on her list, when the Prince left that night Sarah had an opportunity, as she saw it, a command as the Prince saw it. She was given the penthouse of a kindred friendly apartment complex in an area of LA that was claimed by all and no one at once, and told to make of it what she could. She left that same night for the Warren Apartments, to meet the staff (assigned as her Herd), and to get to work.

She's been a vampire less than a year and she's about to try to convince sadistic killers, twisted perverts, and deranged monsters with abilities she can't even guess at to set aside their differences and work together to make the world a nicer place. And she can't wait to get started.

Personality: Nika talk shit. Nika fite. Nika smash. Nika crash. Nika protecc.

Backstory/History: Nikalette has a troubled past. Born to a single mother on the wrong side of LA. Where all the glitz and glamour was traded for gunshots and grit. Her mother had no idea who her father was and she never cared to really find out. Nikki, her mother, was (and probably still) is a severe drug user. She would do anything to get her next fix. There were always men in and out of their house along with drugs, alcohol, and many other dangers that a child should not be around. When she was eight, her mom got into a relationship with one of her dealers who became physically abusive. Nika had been unable to defend herself then but vowed that she would never be weak and helpless again.

Due to this, she was a difficult child. Rules were meant to be broken. Without ever having any real healthy authority in her life, she fought against anyone who tried to enforce it. She fought, drank, graffiti, thievery, and anything else that would show just how rebellious and unable to tamed or be controlled she was. She liked fighting it made her fill powerful in a life where she had felt powerless. So she did it. Often. If there was a way to act out - she would do so. It led her to have experienced some thrilling and also absolutely terrifying situations.

Somehow, she ended up graduating, she had various boyfriends and girlfriends throughout but her fear of commitment was obvious. It wasn’t until after graduation that she ended up with a meaningful relationship. It lasted about a year before she let the fear of trust and connection she was feeling get the best of her and she ended the relationship rather abruptly. Still if there was anyone she would call if she was in trouble, it would be Becca.

She now has a job as a bouncer, but still is as rebellious and obstinate as always. She picks fights, starts fights, and finishes fights and has a distrust of police officers and authority figures. She still harbors anger and severe resentment for her mother or anything to do with her for the various ways that woman fucked up her childhood.

I'mma put in a maybe-possibly-hopefully interested note for myself here.

Amaris has been tempting me and my muse is nudging me towards the group.

Nice seeing more concepts...

@Amaris your Backgrounds and Disciplines columns are switched.

Amaris

So it is. I will work on fixing it before I post a final draft of it. Thanks for pointing that out.

Didn't expect this to explode so much in a day, I don't even have a concept in mind, guess I'll just bow out.

Pleased to see interest!

My intention is to allow a good week or so for people to have time to think of a character and make said characters (I feel that ensures I have time to answer people's questions, too), and once submissions are in, I'll be selecting who is playing alongside the two reserved/pre-approved players. :)

So you have time. My character was already made from before or I definitely wouldn't have been done yet either.

Suiko

I've got absolutely nothing yet either. I was just saying that I might be interested  :-)

Never mind, I can't read apparently.

I'm thinking a Ventrue...

Will see if the character gen brain is with me.

Blythe

As a note, I'm going to hold off looking at currently submitted sheets/concepts until tomorrow instead of today, mostly as my workplace intends to have me go in rather early tomorrow, but I'm nonetheless excited to be able to get to it tomorrow instead. <3

For those worried about there being a lot of interest or worried about not already having something up...do not worry! Speediness of character submission is in no way a factor for whether or not I will consider someone as a player. I would rather a person take their time and submit something they are happy with if they need that time. And I rather suspect the other interested parties in the game feel the same way. :)

Personality and History
Personality: Impuslive | Cocky | Dynamic | Secretive

History: Born and raised in Japan, Etsuko was always a bit of a problem child when she was growing up. For the most part, her parents were able to keep it under control, until one fateful day when she found some joshi puroresu on television. At the time, female wrestling in the US was still focused on tits and ass, but things were different across the Pacific. Etsuko watched in awe as two women beat each other up (or so she thought at the time, she was young) and became fascinated. Only this gave her parents more problems, such as multiple detentions for starting fights, not paying attention in class, among other things.

When she was sixteen, she found a wrestling school that was willing to train her. She begged her parents to let her join, and after many failed attempts, she finally got them to relent, but on one condition. That it wouldn't affect her schoolwork. Spoiler alert, it did. After a year of near failing grades, her parents, after having tried everything else they could think of, gave her an ultimatum. Quit or get kicked out of the house. Etsuko chose the latter.

Years passed, and her new life was everything she could ever want. The time spent inside the ring, listening to the crowd as she did her thing was worth all the hardships she would otherwise endure. In 1997, during a match, Etsuko landed wrong performing a mundane movie, and tweaked her knee. After visiting the doctors, it turned out the injury was much worse than anyone initially thought, and she would be out of action for some time.

Initially, she thought she'd be fine with it, but after a while, she was getting restless. She felt fine, but the doctors were still saying she needed a little bit more time to recover. It was early '98, and wrestling in America was beginning what would later become what many to believe its peak era. While she enjoyed the Japanese style, it lacked some of the character work and storytelling that the American shows had. So since they wouldn't let her back in the ring, she planned a little vacation to the US. The WWF was bringing one of its bigger shows to California, and it was the perfect time to go see a show in person, to get a better look at just how they did things.

When one of the big promotions is having a spectacle of a show like that, the smaller, more local ones usually put on shows as well, the night or two before, to give those from out of town more to watch than just the main show. Etsuko was getting fidgety. She got in touch with a local promoter and convinced him to give her a spot on one of these shows. She wanted to show these Americans what a real wrestler was capable of. What she didn't know is that the match would forever change her life.

During the match, she climbed to the top corner, preparing to leap off onto her opponent, when her bad knee gave way. She tumbled, falling down to the mat and landing on her head. The prognosis was grim. General consensus among the ER staff was that she'd be paralyzed. But according to the official records, she checked herself out and left the next night. What the records won't show you is the intervention of one Austin Birch. While some other clanmates belittled his appreciation of this sporting entertainment, he saw it for what it was. Decades ago, he came out to Hollywood to be a stuntman, and now, he saw many similarities between the two. After watching Etsuko risk her life to entertain an audience, something compelled him to try to save her. That night, he embraced her, letting the power of the blood do what conventional medicine could not.

She was brought into the Camarilla with Birch, and though some objected to the way in which he brought a childer into the world, he had enough good faith with them to at least be given the benefit of doubt. Many are still wary of her, though, especially now that Austin has disappeared. Recently, he started looking into something, but kept it rather hidden. The only thing Etsuko could pry from him was something about a film. At first she worried, but everyone kept telling her not to, that it was normal for her sire to suddenly vanish for months at a time. Maybe they are right.

Nature:   CompetitorHaven: TBD
Demeanor:   Thrill-Seeker   Concept: Bike messenger turned cat burglar
Generation:   Hidden by Storyteller   EXP Spent: 0

Personality (4 words): Daredevil, gregarious, impatient, optimistic

Basic concept: Former bike messenger and favored ghoul of a powerful Toreador. Artforms include bike stunts and hip hop dance.
History

Scott was born in NYC, but moved to LA once he graduated high school in an attempt to 'make it'. He learned how to be a bike messenger in NYC and continued to make a living doing that in LA - not much of a living, but it was doing something he really enjoyed at least, and he was good at it, too, delivering physical goods and papers faster than someone in a car could across much of the city thanks to its terrible traffic and his willingness to bike like a maniac.

He started receiving semi-regular work from a rather odd client (Baron Isaac Abrams) - it was usually delivery of odd items and packages, sometimes picked up during the day but often at night. He continued to work for this man, the vampire finding security in sending and receiving some information in the 'real' world rather than the emerging internet where the Nosferatu were already starting to get their claws into everything. Scott and his client grew rather close, for some reason some spark of life in Scott seemed to entrance the Toreador, and their relationship last for several years - both as business, and somewhat sexual as Scott became part of the powerful man's herd.

Powerful vampires have powerful enemies, however, and one of those enemies got to Scott one night, stealing his package and draining him and tossing him on the steps of his soon-to-be-Sire's haven. Finding one of his cherished humans dying in front of him, the Toreador chose to embrace him rather than lose him, winding up with a second childe created under dire circumstances.

Since then, Scott continued to work for his Sire for a few years before striking out on his own, now attempting to make a name for himself.

History
Born in the city of Vladivostok two years after the launch of Sputnik 1, Ivan was fed steady propaganda of Soviet supremacy over the decadence and weakness of the West.  And while geopolitics and the threat of mutual nuclear annihilation never appealed to him, the idea that a people could be transformed and changed within a single generation took root in his mind as he was finishing his early education.  Upon graduation from the local high school, Ivan enrolled in a university to major in biology while taking a minor in psychology.  His general outlook was that to change the mind you needed to change the body, and vice versa.

Unfortunately for Ivan, he was surrounded by lesser minds that could not comprehend and appreciate how revolutionary and history-changing his ideas were.   "Unethical" they called his experiments in polite company, "inhumane" if they were being candid.  Ivan was expelled two years into his studies and that would have been the end of his opportunities if not for his experiments coming to the attention of a local Tzimisce.  His sire was amused by the mortal's tenuous understanding of the world, and so embraced the man as he was leaving a bar one evening after conducting another experiment in finding out how many liters of vodka a person can drink before their kidney's dissolved into goo.

Ivan took to his new unlife with the fervor of a new convert, quickly adopting the path of his sire while expanding his knowledge of the clan's fleshcrafting arts despite the delay in acquiring the necessary soil he required.  He still hasn't figured out why the Embrace attuned him to the clan's ancestral lands rather than that of his motherland, but it is a mystery he intends to unravel at some point in the future, once other more pressing experiments are concluded.  But while he had finally found academic freedom, he chaffed beneath the blood bond his sire had trapped him in.  And so when his sire decided that they would move to America to join the Sabbat, he had little choice in the matter despite his mistrust and disdain for what he knew of the sect.

Fortunately for Ivan (though less so for the crew of the ship they were sailing on), nature interceded on his behalf.  A thunderstorm grew particularly intense as they were a few miles from arriving in San Diego, causing the ship to run ashore.  The crate he was in was tossed overboard, though remained closed.  His sire's crate had also survived the landing, but roused by the rough landing, his sire opened the crate enough that the baleful sunlight and was burned almost instantly.  The smile that crossed Ivan's lips as he felt the bond shatter was the first bit of human emotion he had expressed in nearly half a decade.  He escaped under the cover of darkness a few hours later as the crate was waiting to be reloaded onto a new ship, and made his way north.   He knew their destination had been Mexico, and so he wanted as far from there as he could get.

It would be nearly a month before he would have a restful slumber.  Eventually he found a man that worked at UCLA in their science request department to take as a ghoul that could procure a few precious crates of the soil he needed, with a new shipment set to arrive soon to provide him with a larger buffer to ensure he is well-stocked for any emergencies.   In the meantime, Ivan has two goals to work towards.  Finding a way to make his current haven suitable for conducting experiments in, and also integrating himself into the local Anarch community in way that avoids him taking up sunbathing against his will.

I do believe we just picked all the available clans... except Gangrel and Malkavian unless I'm very much mistaken. I'm honestly a bit surprised nobody went for the loonies...

Nice to see another concept involving a different PoE though I'm curious about "Ancestral Soil Dependence" as a flaw. That's already the clan's weakness and as far as most other clans and flaws go they are actively disallowed. Brujah for instance can't pick the merit helping them with Frenzy checks, Lasombra can't pick the flaw denying a reflection, Nosferatu aren't allowed the flaw that disfigures them (can you even imagine how one would be able to tell whether a Nossie was normal or disfigured?), Ventrue aren't allowed the picky eater flaw and there are doubtless many more examples out there. As ST it's Bly's decision in the end though. On a side note I cracked a smile after reading about the unethical and inhumane experiments ;) A bit paranoid though to require entire crates of dirt unless he plans to ship rations of it all around the state or even the country...

Here's a question I'm personally curious about aimed at either Bly or whoever else might know the answer: does anyone know why the "Abyss" specialty was removed from the Occult knowledge? As in was it an intentional thing or merely an oversight as the new edition might've lost a word in transition?

I wondered that myself as a Lasombra fan (almost brought one in this time!). My personal guess was that they purposefully left it out because it is basically a Specialty of "literally anything to do with my main clan discipline" - my guess is the same reason there's no Blood Magic occult specialty.

Normally, a Tzimisce will need soil from someplace that is important to he...she...it.  That can be soil from where it was embraced, soil from where it was born as a mortal, I've seen some allow soil from their family cemetery be allowed.   But generally, every Tzimisce has their own unique patch of dirt they need.   Ancestral Soil Dependency takes away that and means you have to use soil that comes from the Eastern European region where the clan's homelands are.  So soil from the Carpathians regions of Europe is the only soil that will let the Tzimisce sleep comfortably, even if they have never stepped foot in that part of the world.   It's not so much that it changes the clan weakness as it is a narrowing of that focus.  It also makes it harder to replace if the soil is destroyed, leaving the Fiend much more vulnerable to those that know about the requirement.

@Orange Marmalade According to the beliefs of plenty of Lasombra (at least according to the older books anyway) then the Abyss was actually a thing they were aware of or actively tried studying or even manipulating. And regarding the Blood Magic there was a bloodline of Lasombra or followers of a certain path (can't recall the specifics) that actually had some rituals involving it.

@Hades Alright, I get what you're saying but it would still not fully work in your particular case:
QuoteDependence on their native soil hampered the Tzimisce’s flight from Eastern Europe. Even a few childer sired elsewhere required the soil of a homeland they had never visited, making them particularly vulnerable to enemies who knew of this weakness. In the modern nights, rapid transportation makes such a threat much less severe, but even childer sired generations after their ancestors relocated occasionally manifest this Flaw.

The will of the spirits from the ancestral Tzimisce homeland weighs heavy on your blood — soil from a place important to you as a mortal won’t do. You actually need two handfuls of the tainted Eastern European soil of the Tzimisce homeland. Ancestral Soil Dependence most commonly manifests in the childer of koldun and the branch of the clan thought to be descended from Yorak. Characters Embraced in Eastern Europe can’t take this Flaw (they’re already dependant on the local soil).

And another question regarding languages. I know there's a merit to gain more of them but given the setting is 1999 and the fact that most education systems around the world typically teach both a native language and at least one foreign one does it truly make sense for people born around this time not to know at least 2 languages? In Europe for instance we're taught native languages, English, German or French. Various anime/manga/dramas taught me that Japanese and Korean similarly learn English and possibly Chinese as well on top of their native languages. I'm fairly certain many Canadians are bilingual as well with both English and French. And as far as Americans go well I do believe Spanish is similarly well known on top of just English, right? So does it truly make sense to assume modern people would be dumber in the story than in RL? I don't really mind as it's just a puny 1 point merit but I do find the necessity of taking it weird under such conditions.
