Even if it extends into Biden's term, an actual conviction would mean that Trump: 1) can't run in 2024; 2) will lose the Presidential pension; and 3) would lose other privileges granted to ex-presidents - such as Secret Service protection.

So, it's not like they need to complete the trial before January 20th? They can finish even with Biden sworn in?

BTW. Is that true that Trump could pardon himself for everything before handing over the office?

Dammit! I'm sorry about that - I've copied the relevant Twitter link

https://twitter.com/NatashaBertrand/status/1347327314363904006?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1347327314363904006%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url

Hope this works.

What does "equities" mean in this context, please? (I only know it as a trading business word). Classified briefings circulated by the NSA and the CIA?

It would be unprecedented for an impeachment trial to extend into a successor's term. We don't know the legalities involved, because they haven't been established.

Chaeronea

It's basically referring to national security materials - apparently under some legal definitions 'documents'  can refer just to hard copies rather than electronics, and most of the stuff the DOJ was sure is stolen were electronics like hard drives and laptops. As they were taken from the offices of Senators and such, there are concerns that some of them contained sensitive information about foreign and domestic intelligence operations.

Short answer...maybe. There's not really a precedent for it so no one is entirely certain, however he could only pardon himself for federal crimes...states could still come after him (looking at New York in particular here) for crimes committed at the state level.

I wanted to put this in the funny thread but it may be deemed insensitive.

I'm just surprised this song hasn't been trending lately.

Not a fan of RATM for their politics, but this song is sadly true.

To inject some levity, though...

It definitely was last summer.

That album is thirty years old (holy shit!) and it hasn't aged a day. Unfortunately.

I always get a chuckle when I see people who trend more towards hte political right - or who, like Senator Paul Ryan are well-planted all the way over there - shouting along with "FUCK YOU I WON'T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME!" - and then get all mad when they find out the band's a bunch of Maoists. Like what machine did Paul Ryan think they were raging against? The dryer?  XD

The @TeamTrump account has also been permanently shut down for trying to send out tweets that Trump attempted to send through @POTUS - but were deleted by Twitter for inciting violence.  (The @POTUS account can't be shut down, because it's an official government account.)

True :)

Personally, from what I've heard of RATM's music, they seemed to be pointing out real and important issues - but their political views on how to solve these problems seemed all wrong. Whatever problems are there in the US and the world in the general, the solution won't be to embrace Communism, glamourize Che Guevara and the Soviet Union etc. Sorry, Zach DeLaRocha, Tom Morello et al. - Communism has already been tried in my part of the world and if you think it's a good idea, then you're naive (to put it mildly). And don't even come near me while wearing those "CCCP" T-shirts.

(and no, I'm not a right-leaning person, actually)

Ah, see, I've been wondering about that - if Trump could still @POTUS as a venue for spreading his message...

Thank Gawd, someone's centralized this.

Dashboard contains suspensions related to Trump's inner circle, including a few cronies who have been suspended for QAnon activities.

I think a lot of the people are staying on because they're afraid that Trump will appoint someone worse. Pretty much all of them are afraid that they are going to have a difficult time being hired from this point forward.

This.

Yes, impeachment will be a blow to his legacy.
Yes, impeachment will be a signal to future would-be Trumps that their actions will have consequences.

But in my opinion, a second impeachment debacle will be worth it simply to remove his post-Presidential comforts, and prevent him from holding another public office.

Tell you what, I don't know how much a Secret Service detail costs, but why should I, a taxpayer, fund the comforts of a seditionnist, an insurrectionist who incited a mob to assault congress and murder or who knows what else to elected officials. Sound to me that's millions of dollars which could easily be better spent.

Sidney Powell's twitter accpint has been banned too (not surprising I must say). People on alt-right forum are now yelling about free speech being quashed by the "dictatorship of Big Tech".

This always seems to be appropriate:

"I can't remember where I heard this, but someone once said that defending a position by citing free speech is sort of the ultimate concession; you're saying that the most compelling thing you can say for your position is that it's not literally illegal to express."

The last date I could find information for how much is spent by the Secret Service on former presidents was from a 2001 GSA report, so I'm sure it's more now.   But the total was approximately $34 million.  As there were six former Presidents alive at the time (Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, and Clinton) that averages out to being about $5.5 million per President.

So yeah, the money could definitely be better spent on something other than protecting il Cheeto once he's dragged out of the White House.

It's been suggested that Cabinet Sec'ys are resigning to protect him- they can't be called upon to Art. XXV him that way.

Really, what 'moral stance' does it display to resign when your ass is on the sidewalk in under 2 weeks anyway?
Whether it's a breakdown or a breakthrough, shit still gets broken.

I don't know the mechanism but if all but (say) 4 members of the cabinet resigned then could that mean the cabinet consists of 4 people meaning that a yes from 3 of them would be enough to fire up XXV?

One of the most sinister aspects of Wednesday's events is that Trump encouraged his angry fans to attack a building where the three people in the line of succession after himself, if he were removed or died, were working on finally naming - his successor (already elected). Imagine if Pence and/or Pelosi had been taken hostage by a better armed and organized MAGA mob, to put pressure on them?  ::)

A man working close to Pence told CNN that "I have never seen Mike Pence as angry as Wednesday" during those hours of attack. And Trump didn't care to send in the National Guard - it was actually Pence who had to take that decision.
