US loses any rights, I think, for lecturing other countries, on running elections proper any more.

I'm not sure this is true. I think this accusation might have originated in the higher state levels of America's enemies such as Iran, Russia and China. They are obviously delighted at the total mess Trump's words and broken personality have caused.

I think America is extremely entitled to claim it has very fair and transparent elections. Nothing has changed at all. US elections are a model of fairness.

America's problem now is dealing with the fall-out from one big-mouthed narcissistic idiot who has stirred up a whole political party into believing a complete pack of lies. Making sure that the election process (which was fair and is now being broken to make it unfair) is corrected. Seeing Republican state legislatures passing into law processes that they claim are necessary because of a rigged election (which it never was) is disgusting. Fixing this will be a very, very hard job. I am so filled with anger at the awful catastrophe Trump has heaped upon US politics and global standing. The USA may never recover from this.

I'm still looking for a precise quote, but DoJ might be looking into the legality of that law.

Private citizens certainly can lecture, and so can NGO groups. I don't begrudge them that based on national origin. It can end up hypocritical when government officials do so when the regimes they're aiding are doing more or less doing the same thing even if at a different scale. See Trump's ICE camps and Jinping's Uyghur camps, or police brutality in Hong Kong vs. police brutality in Minnesota. Wood in eye, casting stones, and all that.

A lot of times an outside voice is needed to show the corruption of a society. It becomes problematic when those who look outwards become unwilling to look in.

Wow. Democrat lawmaker arrested in Georgia following protests over the new voting laws.

And yes, she is a black woman.

She's long since climbed out of the Republican reality bubble, but back during the Obama years SE Cupp argued in favor of disenfranchising hundreds of thousands to millions of voters if it would catch even one person guilty of voter fraud.

Even though she didn't say it directly, she more or less stood by this if such was a consequence. This was in North Carolina, whose voter ID laws were found out by the courts to be motivated entirely to find ways to prevent African-Americans from voting without explicitly spelling that part out.

They've been just as anti-democracy then as they are now.

From over here in Europe it very feels like there is going to be a collision between Washington and Republican controlled states over this. I have no idea how much Federal power Washington can wield but it does seem to me that Georgia has gone too far, as have some other states such as NC and Iowa. The mid-term elections are going to be a cluster fuck of legal wrangles with results far more in doubt than they were in November 2020. If lawsuits drag on for a long time with votes held in abeyance until they are resolved the concept of fair voting will dissolve into an unholy mess.

This whole "right wing" or "dictatorial" power thing is heading towards a global climax it seems, especially as countries like Poland, Hungary, Myanmar, Belarus, Russia, China and some African states are pushing more and more to curtail civil liberties. France too is struggling with its own social problems regarding its Muslim community. This week in West Yorkshire in the UK a school teacher was suspended over the issue of images of Mohammed shown in a class that was addressing a critical open approach to religious studies.

There seems to be no longer any voice of moderation and understanding to be heard in such collisions of opinion.

It strikes me that this single issue is now the critical thing our planet faces aside from climate change.

The governor of Arkansas signed into law a measure which will allow doctors to refuse treatment to LGBT people based on "moral" and religious grounds. It will also provide protections to healthcare institutions from being punished as a result of said discrimination.

QuoteThe law, also known as the Medical Ethics and Diversity Act, states that even when a procedure is medically necessary, a provider can still refuse treatment, except in emergency situations. It is scheduled to go into effect late this summer, even as the Covid-19 pandemic rages on.

The situation in Myanmar deteriorates further and further.

When, I ask, when will western powers do something about this? It strikes me that military intervention may be the only way.

Is that not illegal? What about a person's human rights?

It is probable (though I'm cynical) that this law will be overturned by the Supreme Court.

Gods. Just so much wrong with American police training. And this pair were not fired for this behaviour. Sickening that it happens and more sickening that there's apparently no repercussions for them.

How can China continue to deny wrongdoing and ethnic cleansing when this happens? Its is quite clear that Chinese authorities are putting pressure on those who speak out after seeking asylum in the west. The UN really needs to do more to resolve this shameful and criminal activity.

Either way, he is disgusting pig, if true.  :P

Oniya

Oh, he's a disgusting pig for other, verified reasons.  He was the only guy to vote against a bill targeting human trafficking.  His excuse was something about how the federal government didn't need more laws to deal with this, but since it involves inter-state activities (commercial transport), it really had to involve the federal government.

Our wonderful London police force has a neo-Nazi in (or it did).

I suppose its good news he was exposed and didn't carry on as a serving officer. Though one wonders how many others are like him?

The war in Donbass continues although it has long dropped off Western media radar. NATO is still watching however but seems to take no steps. I found this site after reading a BBC news report of today's date covering a build up of Russian troops again on Ukraine's eastern border. There was a significant defeat for the Ukrainian army in August-September 2014 at a city called Ilovaisk where the Ukrainian army suffered ~350 to ~400 casualties, mostly during a retreat that was supposed to be along two agreed and protected corridors, but turned out they were not. The Ukraine forces at the time had Ilovaisk surrounded but within a day or two found it was they who were surrounded by nine battalion sized well armed groups who, video shows, were using modern Russian equipment and not the modernised Soviet-era equipment the Ukrainian Separatists employed.

This link is to a fascinating document compiled by Forensic Architecture Org, an organisation commissioned by the European Human Rights Advocacy Centre (EHRAC) and the Ukrainian Legal Advisory Group (ULAG) to study open source data and identify and pinpoint geographically Russian vehicle columns in the aftermath of the incident. I found the evidence in this video compelling and it seems clear that Russian regular armed forces are supporting the Ukrainian Separatists, something Putin's government has always denied.

Even without the specifics of this military incident I find the forensic work showcased in the video to be highly interesting and fascinating to watch.
