Hi Percival, hope your approval goes well!

Your storytime was really interesting to read and made me reflect a little bit on how I got into FreeForm RP myself

Because of the fandoms I was involved in at a very young age (Creepypasta, Sonic, and FNAF being Major Fandoms I was formerly invested in, Undertale as well) I feel like I've been predisposed to Freeform-RP relatively early on because it was EXTREMELY popular in those fandoms back in the good old years of the early 2010's. My favorite aspect of roleplaying when I was younger was the fact I could actually show people how I interpreted characters from my favorite franchises to an effective degree (as I struggled a lot with communicating my thoughts when I was younger). I enjoyed reading fanfiction, but I didn't exactly enjoy writing it and didn't exactly have an outlet to share my own thoughts regarding the characters. I also enjoyed the interactivity of RP OOC, talking about the RP and sharing ideas/hc outside of the RP was so enticing for me. I only found out about D&D later on in life.

I find it interesting (and admittedly kind of funny) seeing people come from D&D Experience into Freeform-RP, primarily because yes the concepts are very similar but are WAY more different than they seem. They both rely on different aspects of roleplay and are way different in practice than they are in theory. This isn't to say D&D style of Roleplaying is invalid, it's more of a "sisters not twins" kind of situation.

Thanks! I hope yours go well too!

I wasn't in contact with fandom forums of the stories I liked. I wasn't honestly much in forums, except for one that was about philosophy/spirituality. I was focused on my engineering studies for the first year, and then I got myself busy getting involved in two different clubs (the tabletop RPG one, and one of astronomy). I was very dedicated to those clubs, even becoming part oftheir staff, from librarian, and vocal, to more invested roles, such as president and member of the small group in charge of disciplinary sanctions.

Then I just focused on work, meeting from time to time to play tabletop RPGs with my friends from uni.

I agree with you with the fact that it's a totally different kind of roleplaying. In a sense, it's closer to collaborative writing, except for the fact that you have 100% control of one character, and 0% control of the character of the other person. However, in a sense, both roleplayers are "DMs" in the sense that they would NPC and describe the rest of the world. Of course... there are some people that RP specifically requesting the other partner to be a Game Master, and therefore be the one in charge of all the work except about the actions of the character of the other person.

I have always been a Dungeon Master/narrator/storyteller that values more story than rules, and because of that I haven't been one to roll for every action in tabletop roleplaying games, but decide on the fly what happens in many instances. Of course, that requires having the trust of the players, but I have been fortunate to have that on my favor.

Thanks for sharing your experience!

Neither was I, I didn't even know forums were a thing at the time XD. A lot of how I started is from roleplaying with my (now ex-) friends in middle school and highschool, I used to RP using Gmail and stuff. When I started going online I used (the now mostly kinda dead) Amino. I didn't really discover forum roleplay until I turned 17-18 I think.

I have a theory it's a generational thing, if you were on Deviantart at all/used it/hell even just browsed it back in 2008-2010 "script roleplay" (what many call one-liner/illiterate roleplay) was like extremely common. The use of asterisks (ex: *hugs*) was also very common when it came to basic interactions. I remember browsing comments on Deviantart posts and seeing types of comments where the poster was essentially roleplaying as a character from the franchise the fan-art was from (usually their favorite). Although Deviantart wasn't (and still isn't) a roleplay site it created a lot of RPers back in the day due to the way the site was laid out at the time. Forums weren't really a concept for my generation, maybe in the early 2000's but by the time I was of age to form coherent thoughts and sentences Forums were kind of starting to go out of style. Deviantart's web layout at the time was similar to Facebook and Myspace with more of a focus on artwork, I think that's what made RPers from my generation flock to it. It had many outlets of communication but it was laid out in a familiar/understandable way.

It's a weird time to talk about because Deviantart was such a mixed bag, at it's core it's meant for art yet younger generations somehow still found a way to understand the concept of RP and bring it to the platform. I personally didn't partake in any Deviantart RP but it was a matter of watching (and as a child would, copying) the behavior/trends around me.

Oh! I didn't know RPing in Deviant art was a thing! wow!!!

I think I started using yahoogroups, as forums, mostly.. and then my interactions where either there or in some chat (MSN messenger mostly, I was shortly in the last days of ICQ haha, and used mIRC for a couple of years). Of course, there was some interaction in the comments of blogs... but I never made an account in Deviantart,... and I mostly used it when browsing images, ... never cared too much about the comments. Not sure if I ever read them!

No one around me was reading that.

It is safe to say, of course... that I for sure am older than you... and a generational aspect plays a huge role here :)

A very elegant and accurate way to call me "old geezer" :P

puppypound

quite new here, but wanted to stop by and say hello / introduce myself.

it's wonderful to see so many fellow writers, and that communities like these, as well as the roleplaying sphere, is not dead. roleplaying has been such a background therapeutic player in my life that few know about, so i thank you all for being a part of that.
