House lawmakers could soon consider whether prosecutors could criminally charge librarians for allowing minors to check out sexually explicit materials.

Giving explicit material to kids has been a crime in Idaho since at least 1972, but public libraries, including those at colleges and universities, are exempted from that law.

Rep. Gayann DeMordaunt (R-Eagle) wants to cut that exemption, meaning librarians could face up to a year in prison and a $1,000 fine any time they lend explicit materials to someone under 18.

Another parent said she had filed a formal complaint against the West Ada School District over the book “Gender Queer: A Memoir.”

“The school does not need to teach our children how to do oral sex,” she said. “That’s my job.”

Back when I was in high school I remember checking out a book recommended by a friend from our school library.  My jaw about hit the floor when I realized I was headed into a sex scene with a woman and a man who up until that point everyone thought was a woman.  After they have sex he explains about using magic to transform because some guy wanted to kill him.  But I think our librarian was of the opinion that any teenage student who was checking out books to read for pleasure could handle it.

Focusing on the mental health aspect of incels might not be the path forward for those that do go on to commit acts of terrorism like Rogers and Minassian. Many of these incels just have no interest in self-reflection; they don't sit down and think about why they're not happy or thriving. This isn't just me assuming this; incels themselves refer to this as 'taking the black pill'. Self-acceptance that they are sexually doomed no matter what they do acts as a mental shield for incels to avoid facing up to their issues or asking for help. What motivates incels is a distinct ideology, that is, their particular brand of misogyny.

I know. They dig themselves into these holes then want to drag others down. As the saying goes 'You can't help someone who doesn't want to help themselves.'  :/

But I'm glad, at least, that some official resources and time is going into this. Maybe some solution can come out of this that we weren't really obvious or available to us before.

Probably true, unfortunately. I'm just saying these guys aren't simply incredibly misogynistic idiots with tendencies for violence against women. This whole... subculture (I guess that'd be the proper term here)... is deeply toxic and cult-like, with the guys there self-flagellating themselves with beliefs that are bound to harm their mental health. I can perfectly imagine a relatively normal (if romantically unsuccessful) guy being drawn into this mess and going off his rocker after a while.

That ContraPoints video I mentioned really was an eye-opener for me. And I have a lot of respect for CP because of it... With incels, one is tempted to stop at the most obvious level of "Incels are disgusting, hateful and, occassionally, very dangerous". But CP got deeper than that, dissected their whole ideology and pointed out the amount of psychological self-harm these people engage in. I still remember that one moment in her video when she made that completely straight, honest and compassionate appeal to any potential incels watching her (an approximation of a quote here): "I know you probably won't listen to someone like me, but please... get help!"
