Also, I think there's a problem with having to buy gear for minions. It's an issue either way, but the fact that the mass combat rules focus entirely on CR really makes it a problem.

Consider: A 10th level warrior with gear appropriate to his level is CR 8. To buy that many NPC class levels costs 20,000gp, and appropriate gear for a 10th level NPC is ~10,000gp. So roughly 30,000gp for a CR 8 minion.

A Fire Giant is CR 10, and so costs 20,000gp. And he's just CR 10 flat.

Even if you give the classed minions a free upgrade to be considered CR = class level, it's still a pretty raw deal :/

*Edit* Thought: Why don't we just ditch buying class levels entirely and just base the minions entirely on the CR? So minions are just CR x 2,000gp, regardless of whether they're a classed NPC or monster? So a level 10 warrior with NPC gear would be 16,000gp, because he's CR 8.

That way we wouldn't even have to worry about any of the gear or class levels or any of that junk. Since there's a surcharge on templates, they could just increase the overall cost by a percentage, in addition to boosting the CR.

Cohorts could still cost 4,000gp/class level like before, since they actually get PC classes and thus good casting and all that.

Personally I would much rather be automatically given what we normally get for Leadership values, and then just spend gold to upgrade them from there, with some kind of cost to convert a normal minion into a CR critter instead, or some such.

So... we have one person who wants a desert, one for a forest, one for somewhere cold, and one who is flammable... and me who doesnt care as long as the castle is hidden. A flying castle is cute, but its waaaay too expensive. I mean, for five million we could get literally several of anything else.

How about... we put the castle in the mountains (where it is cold and high) overlooking a desert on one side and forest on the other?

RE: the castle, I have to agree the flying castle is way too expensive. I'm honestly fine with most anything really. Putting it on a mountain would be cool though.

As for minions, we can keep it as it is too. Just if we do, I'm just going to either get rid of all my regular soldiers, or replace them with fire giants because they're better, cheaper, AND easier

Why not have fortresses inside your fortress? Each "level" could be a demiplane, accessible only from the demiplane before it, accessible from the original fortress. Everyone gets what the want!

Honestly the mountain top fortress bordering both a desert and a forest sounds perfect to me. Perhaps the fortress's main water feature/moat could drop off on either side feed two rivers going through both the desert and the forest with a little cove or harbor town for trade at the foot of the mountain. :3

Honestly my gal would jive with the mountain or desert ideas...or a creepy ass coastal marsh that's backed by a swamp. Lots of dragons LOVE the water and can do some crazy shit with it.

Or here's an idea, we plunk ourselves on our own private tropical island or build the guild into an oceanic volcano that's above sea level.

Though the badlands idea Snake proposed works too. :3

Maybe do a coastal egyptian town like Alexandria so we can have sand, water and some trees.  xD

That's why I added dungeon layer . Anyways on replacing class levels with CR; I can add option for it but it's not same cost as cohort or warrior same levels.

On a more serious note:

Making the castle abut some mountains is cheap. Just 100,000 gold. Putting it on a mountain seems to be much more expensive at 1,000,000. Though that's the cost for 'in the mountains' which I would interpret as different than just being on top of a lone mountain.

However, I think the effect/benefit would be the same so long as the mountain in question was particularly mighty.

So for a start:
1,000,000 - On a lone, mighty mountain
  200,000 - Deep, dark forest for 20 miles on one side (halving cost since it's only one half)
  125,000 - 10 miles of desert on the other side, between the mountain and the sea
  200,000 - The mountain rises out of a huge lake, a river runs through both the forest and the desert to the sea
   25,000 - Warded against scrying
   50,000 - Warded against Teleport
   50,000 - Tactical Meeting Room
1,650,000gp

And then whatever other amenities we want. Could also make the desert/forest bigger.

You can place anything on dungeon layer as if on guild hall with 50% discount minus grand magia stuff. You can build demiplane inside demiplane (inception style) or build terrain for few miles (or unlimited miles but nobody got that much gold to spend for just that ). Also when I speak miles terrain wise it's a flat circle (than cubic amounts). The height of the forest is average for it's kind (which is that trees go up around 20-30 feet high depending on species). Buying it multiple times increase it's height. Mountains are around half-mile high in mile radius (buying it more than once expands radius or increase height).

That could work! I put the mountain in the lake cause I kinda like the idea of this singular monolithic fortress carved out of a mountain. :)

Hmm I hate to do this really but I think I'm going to withdraw my character build and draw up a new one I've wanted to play a fully powered version of my Sanosuke char for god knows how long and this is a perfect chance to do so. In a game like this: I'd do it as well so it makes sense.
