'White Supremacist in NYC Sword Killing Charged With Murder as Terrorism'

*sigh* It's things like this that only create an even greater cultural divide. Normally I treat NBC like it's just the 'other Fox News' but I've been seeing this story from just about everywhere. Although personally, this case is somewhat interesting to me due to its bizarre nature.

Quote from: From the Article
A white racist accused of fatally stabbing a 66-year-old stranger on a Manhattan street because he was black says he'd intended it as "a practice run" in a mission to deter interracial relationships.

...

"The white race is being eroded. ... No one cares about you. The Chinese don't care about you, the blacks don't care about you," he said. Jackson, who was raised in what was described as a churchgoing, liberal family in a Baltimore suburb, said his ideal society is "1950s America."

While I kind of pity him (rather his very much poisoned influence), the victim's life was simply not his to take.

I can't remember, does New York even have the Death Penalty?

To add to this, I have been in a few interracial relationships. It's a shame that some see love in only 'shades and hues'. Relationships are simply relationships to me.

Nope. It doesn't have the death penalty

You see, that's what I thought. I had to look it up, I guess they got rid of it since 1963. I imagine he'll get life in prison or something. I'd be surprised if he got off on mental illness. I always pictured New York as very left, and harsh with things like hate crimes. Then again, I really wouldn't know. I don't really keep up with laws or the justice system in that state.

To be honest, the sword part is what really caught my eye and had me thinking about lots of things related regarding murder, politics and the justice system in general.

An area can be 'harsh on crime' without using the death penalty.  (Indeed, being stuck in a 6x9 for the rest of your life is pretty harsh, even with the 'amenities' that get complained about when people start talking about the economic aspects.)  It's much easier to fix a mistaken LWOP than it is a mistaken lethal injection.

True. The main reason I ask is that I'm running into that "I hope he faces the Death Penalty" sort of conversation with a few friends talking about this. My personal beliefs out of the equation, I was mostly thinking of replying "Ummm... I don't think they do that anymore in that state."  :-\

Oniya

Decent enough response, and probably helps keep it from getting personal.

You'd think for something with that much value it would have some real major security on it.

I think Adam West-era Batman and Robin are already halfway to Two-Face's lair, having solved this fiendish crime.

Two UN observers, a Swedish woman and an American man, and their local interpreter, have been found killed and buried in a shallow grave two weeks after they were captured by government troops in southern Congo-Kinshasa. They were in the war-torn region of Kasai to investigate reports of war crimes, rapes and killings of civilians, and were put to death themselves.  :-(

The woman was a former politician for the Green Party in Sweden and later a UN officer. Front oage news.

Considering that I currently have a right to remain in Ireland based on EU treaty rights (justified by England being part of the EU), this means I might need to re-apply and go through that whole ordeal all over again of getting shed loads of paperwork sorted out. I sure hope not. :/

Seems the sudden refugee and immigrant influx to Canada is now making the Canadians weary and some are even wanting Trump Style policies.

Never thought id see that. Problem is I don't think any country ever really planned for a crisis of this scale...I don't think even the UN has plans designed for this much chaos. God help us if a nuke goes off somewhere or a real global catastrophe happens, civilization would just collapse in on itself.

I'm not surprised, he relies on everything that's crass when it comes to the internet.  ::)

And of course he wants to help some of his friends in showbiz and the telecoms business.

It has been suggested that before Congress can do that to us, we do it to them.  People are seeking funds to purchase the browsing history of elected officials so it can be sold to the highest bidder.  Imagine what would happen if that information fell into the hands of investigative journalists.  Congress may seek to protect their servers but why should they be allowed that cover when the rest of us aren'?

It would be nice, but sadly it doesn't look like it's possible to do that.  The companies would theoretically be able to get a specific person's information, but practically speaking they're not going to do that because selling identifiable information would get them sued on a regular basis.  Those money-raising schemes are either scams or badly misguided.

China bans long full-body veils and "abnormal beards" in the Central Asian region of Xinjiang, while also making it illegal to avoid listening to state radio and tv. The first is clearly aimed at radical islamism and terrorism - there's a sizeable Muslim minority people in the area, the Uighurs - the second, the radio/tv compulsion, is a throwback to the days of Mao or even Stalin.

No definition of when a beard has become "extreme" of course.  :P

All of the wording in the law is vague. Which is usually an excuse for a government to play fast and loose with it to do as they please.
