At the time of this posting, I have painted up all the Necrons in the 40k Recruit set.

Necrons

This leaves only the Primaris Lieutenant from the Recruit set left for me to paint. My next project uses some of the same paints emplyed in different ways, so I'm going to bodge a little more paint onto him here and there until he's done.

Speaking of my next project, I wanted to make myself a Hunter Clade Kill Team. I got my Sicarians assembled today, and even got my Ruststalker fully painted:

Well don't. There is an upcoming Army Painter "speedpaint" line that seems to be better for easy use than contrast paints and at half the price!

I made a Chaos Sorcerer Lord conversion!

Unpainted, but I thought I'd share, as I'm quite satisfied with the effect.

Also, as I'm on vacation for the rest of the year, I decided to try assembling and painting a Hellflayer of Slaanesh.

As for what I used... it's a normal Chaos Sorcerer, but with the head of Symbaresh Twinsouls' squad leader. I bought the Myrmidesh Painbringers / Symbareth Twinsouls box for my Slaanesh army and I decided I'm going to assemble it as a Painbringers unit. They have different heads than Twinsouls, I thought that the Twinsouls leader head was awesome and I didn't like the normal Chaos Sorcerer's head at all... Hence, a transplant :)

Man, that looks great, Beorning. If you’d told me that was an actual off-the-shelf kit, I’d have believed you.

Finally got my gap-filler putty, so I was able to prime up the rest of my Hinter Clade Kill team. Not sure when I’ll have time to paint, but it’s nice to be able to move forward on that project.

Converting is one of my favourite parts of the hobby :) I should dig out some of my better ones and post them up.

Once I get my Skitarii “Mission Specialist” painted, I’ll pop him up here. Just a regular Skitarii Vanguard trooper, but with a Sicarian Infiltrator Princeps’ backpack, so it’s got a servo-skull and computer arm on His job in Kill Team will be taking a Servo-Skull and/or Mechadendrites every mission, and poking objectives for free, while everyone else does their particular job.

Thank you for the kind words regarding the conversion - I like how he came out, too. Although, to be honest... it's just a swapped head :)

Overall, I don't do many conversions. I made an alternate Slaughter Queen for my Daughters of Khaine (now there's a project on a severe backburner...), as I didn't like the one that came with the Cauldron of Blood set. Instead of using that one, I cut off her hands (she's holding two special blades) and put them on a Dark Elf Sorceress. And voila... a completely legit Slaughter Queen, but much better looking than the default one. :)

I also did some conversions for Infinity. The most complex one was creating a dismounted version of Motorized Bounty Hunter, I also improved the Maghariba Pilot mini (the official version is posed in an awfully... pinup-y way). I'd like to create a dismounted version of Penthesilea, but I can't come up with a decent approach...

On another note, a question:

I'm moving forward with the Hellflayer project. I have some ideas how to paint it, but I'm struggling with the chariot's railing / balcony. I feel that simply painting in with a single colour will make it look flat. Some shading or highlighting could be useful, but... what do I highlight? This thing has no sharp edges. So, how do I determine what to highlight?

Sounds like a time for zenithal priming to show you the way.
Zenithal priming is when you prime your mini black or grey and then spray it white from preferred top angles.
What this gives you is a guideline where the light would be if the sun was overhead. those are generally the nice spots to highlight.

In other words: highlight ~top 40% of the railing except for the parts where there are things over it. If you keep it decent, it will look okay :)


For some of my progress: I got a 3D printer! I am now churning out fun minis for *very* cheap.

And speaking of churning out minis: I went and counted how many minis I painted this year. The number is 192.
192 miniatures painted over the year of 2021. Many tyranids were involved but most of those were generic fantasy minis...and I kinda love those :)

Well, if you want to paint something that looks a bit more atmospheric  or just have a different type of light source ^^ I use it from time to time when painting "evil" type characters.

So in general with miniatures, you are fighting with light and our expectations of it. In general we except the light to come from above and deep areas to be shadowy.
You can get away with some objects shining if you use common items (torches, campfires) or tropes (green tubes filled with liquid), but as soon as you use something unusual, your brain...kinda doesnt want to see it as lighting. It is very strange.
You usually dont have to fight with this in 2D arts because there isn't the 3D aspect to contend with it.
