This is for future games.  :)   And also suggestions for themes for future games.  The current Faculty-inspired alien version was Doomsday's idea, and Caeli's medieval theme will probably be the next one I'll start, if that interests you.

They do!

New and improved listing:

  • Medieval fantasy (Caeli's suggestion above)
  • Bootleggers (1920's rum runners)
  • Pirates (Yarr!)
  • Roses vs. Thorns
  • Robin Hood
  • Werecreatures other than wolves
  • Ancient times -- Rome, Egypt, etc.
  • Post-apocalyptic
  • Greek gods
  • Asian/Far East

I'm planning on the medieval fantasy version next, but there will be more games!  So you can always PM or post votes, suggestions, comments, etc.  :)

And the new list of who'd like to play:

  • Marguerite
  • Kip
  • Saffron
  • Mithlomwen
  • Kurzyk
  • Remiel
  • Beguile's Mistress
  • Eden
  • Elandra
  • Teno
  • Xandi
  • Ryven
  • LadySky
  • SleepyWei
  • Winterborn
  • Aiden
  • Moirae
  • Imogen
  • Amberghylles
  • Haibane
  • Caeli
  • country

I have some roles listed below.  If the game is going to run with over twenty people, though, or even close to that, I'll probably add some other roles to help things go more quickly.  There again, I'll take votes -- I'm thinking of the Executioner, perhaps, or maybe the Alchemist.

It could also be possible to add a Rebel Leader, who would be the equivalent of the Alpha in the Werewolf version -- this person, once during the game, could choose someone to bribe, threaten, or otherwise coerce over to the rebels' cause.

Councilors (?) - A group of important citizens who have banded together in a time of political crisis.  The king has just died, leaving a daughter as the new queen; but she is too young to rule alone.  The councilors (led by an elected Regent) have gathered to protect and advise their new ruler... but they soon learn that there is a rebel faction that hopes to seize the throne.

Rebels (3-5) - Though the world thinks they are loyal subjects, they know the hazards of having such a youthful ruler, and would prefer to have an adult of their choosing on the throne.  And if this new ruler is willing to reward their support, so much the better.  Each night, they may vote to remove one other player.

Weaponsmaster (1) - This person's skill with weapons is matched only by their loyalty to the Queen.  Once each night, this person may protect one fellow player from harm at the rebels' hands.

Historian (1) - No ordinary academic, this person's knowledge of noble geneaologies and history is second to none -- and there is a good deal of useful information to be found in the pages of some books.  Once each night, this person may request to learn one other player's role from the GM (Val).

Regent (1) - An elected role.  In the case of a tie in the lynch votes, this person will decide who shall be escorted to Tower Green to meet the headsman's sword.

Edit:  Corrected, because Val apparently needs her eyes checked.  :P

I wouldn't mind being a Councilor.  It's the type of position I like.

Or perhaps a lady in waiting and confidant to the new queen.

Ooh. I love the backstory, Val...
It reminds me of the overarching plot theme from Exile's Valor (Mercedes Lackey). <3

I haven't read that, actually.  It was mainly inspired by what I know of Scottish history in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries -- several Scottish kings in a row died young and left minors to inherit the throne, and the more powerful nobles were always very quick to take advantage when that happened.

Also, note above that we now have 21 people on the list, which seems like too many to me -- the early rounds could take an awfully long time with so many.  If there's anyone who might want to step down until the next game, please let me know -- with the holidays coming up, some of you may be busy anyway.  Anyone who does sit the next one out, though, will be first in line for the following game.

And everyone can vote on the themes, remember, so if you see one you're really aching to try, just let me know.  :)

But wait!  I have a cunning plan (and five points to anyone who gets that reference).

If we can find at least three more people interested in playing, I'll split the list in half and have twelve (or thereabouts) in each game -- that's usually a nice, quick number to have.

So first, if you know anyone who'd like to play but hasn't yet posted, send them over.  :)

And second, everyone can choose their favorite setting.  One will be the medieval fantasy setting described above; the second is open for voting.

Post here or PM me!   :D

I know something like this has been done in the past, but have you considered a special holiday edition?

I'm thinking it could be something like this.

Santa and his elves are hiding, so if we want presents, we have to find them.

i.e. roles would be:

Alpha/Brood alien = Santa who chooses a  'nice' person who has been especially good and turns them into an elf.

Werewolves/bad guys = Elves

Peasants = 'nice' people or whatever you want to call the people who have been good throughout the year.

Seer = 'Naughty' person who stays up late and peeks when they're not supposed to.  Wish I had a better name for these.
EDIT: Grinch would work nicely here. :-)

I'm sure a whimsy way could be thought up of how a 'lynching' would occur, but in this instance it would just be revealing the elf/santa and everyone would get a present upon doing so.

It's also a less violent version of the game (not that I have a problem with violence) since no one dies. :P

Okay, adding Caeli and country puts the grand total at twenty-three, which is enough for two games.  *cheers*  Now we just need one more setting.

Hm.  I think a mass PM is in order, so I can get everyone sorted.  Never fear, folks, I'll get myself organized soon.  Heh.

Will there be one of the Ryvens in each game or will one game contain them both? *tee hee*

The medieval game sounds fine, I'll take any role handed out randomly - I thought that was how role allocations went in these sorts of games?

Yes, I just noticed Ryven cloned himself.  Heh.  I blame his holiday name!

However, yes, roles are entirely random.  It's themes that everyone can vote on, and from there the roles are assigned by drawing names.  (And yes, I actually do write out names and draw them -- it's basically no-tech, but fun.   :-))

Anyway, as mentioned, medieval game first; followed by the top vote-getter among the other options.

Have we ever done an actual Mafia-themed game? I know there was that one about the rumrunners and the speakeasies.

Just to put it out there, I ran a game once on another forum based on Martin Scorcesi's The Departed.   The players were sorted into one of four camps: either one of the notorious crime families -- the Cannollis, the Linguines, or the Fettucine Alfredos -- or the outnumbered, overwhelmed cops of the NYPD.  Everyone pretty much knew who everyone was at the outset, but the twist was that each family had a plant, or mole, in the NYPD, while the cops had an agent working undercover in each of the crime families.  Each crime family could choose one target per night, while the cops could either vote to arrest a gang member or investigate one of their own.   The cops had to deliberate in public (whereas the gangsters could plot and scheme in private) but they were protected by body armour -- each attempted hit against them had only a 50% chance of succeeding, as determined by a coin flip.

It sounds complex and chaotic, and it was, with bullets flying left and right and two or three bodies dropping a round, but it was still great fun.  The Cannollis ended up winning that one after losing only one of their members.

I'd like to try it here someday, but I'm deferring so I don't detract from the games in progress.

Also, as an idea, I'd like to reiterate Ryven's post-apocalyptic theme. Or perhaps a Lost variation, where survivors marooned on a strange island have to identify the mysterious Others, who kidnap some of the survivors in the night and smuggle them away for Mysterious Purposes.

There's a card game along those lines, I believe, though I think you have some extra twists with the scheming in public, etc.  You probably should see how much interest you can get for that, though -- it's different enough that you might attract a slightly different crowd.  :)

*records vote*

I personally haven't done an actual Mafia theme, no; the bootleggers were the closest I've come.

If you are on the list, but would prefer to wait for a different theme or otherwise don't want to join in this time, let me know that, too.

Roles are listed again below, with one addition.

Historian (1) - No ordinary academic, this person's knowledge of noble geneaologies and history is second to none -- and there is a good deal of useful information to be found in the pages of some books.  Once each night, this person may request to learn one other player's role from the GM (Val).

Alchemist (1) - Practicing the arts of herbs in secret, this player has brewed a sinister potion that can be used once per game, during the night, to poison one other player.  Choose your victim wisely!

Regent (1) - An elected role.  In the case of a tie in the lynch votes, this person will decide who shall be escorted to Tower Green to meet the headsman's sword.
