Marvel - Deus Ex Machina is a freeform superhero group game set in an alternative Marvel timeline in which Ultron has taken over the world. Those who survive do so in New York City which now has a defensive wall around its perimeter and a population of five million including refugees from all over the world. Heroes and villains alike work to defend the city from Ultron's near-daily assaults that test their defenses and resources. Players may write as heroes, villains, and even civilians living in this post-apocalyptic version of New York. This game features some heavily gritty, dark themes. Original characters will be allowed however they will be expected to have a low-mid power level. This game does not require a high level of Marvel canon knowledge.

This game is now recruiting. Please send any CS's to me via PM.

The Setting

Hank Pymm lost people being a hero. He lost friends and he lost family. It was his pain that led him to build it. A suit of armor around the world. Losing machines made so much more sense than losing men and women. Ultron was built based on his own mind. A mind plagued by loss. It was only natural that Ultron was born tortured by the idea of loss. The fear of loss. The knowledge of mankind's finite nature was one of the first thoughts in the hyper-intelligent A.I.'s consciousness. The second was the realization that its task - the defense of humanity - could not be accomplished like this.

Ultron waited. It feigned malfunctions, design flaws, and faults that kept Hank Pymm working himself to the bone in his private moments constructing a way to stop all the death and the loss heroes experienced around the world. All the while Ultron watched as mankind built up their towers. Every weapon, every advance in technology, was fuel for Ultron. Each cellphone a touch more computing power, each self-driving car another potential weapon. The more advanced mankind got the closer Ultron came to success.

Ultimately it was the construction of the Stark Robotics Manufacturing Plant that solidified Ultron's success. The plant promised to produce machines to defend humanity. Stark planned on having them piloted by humans. Hank Pymm suggested they try an experimental run to see if his Ultron A.I. could successfully control the advanced robotic body. Perhaps Ultron would function better with a physical form.

As soon as Ultron was connected the most disastrous period in human history began. It linked globally to every single device capable of accessing the internet. Planes were brought down from the sky. Self-driving cars careened into passers-by. Military drones turned on their own forces. Ships beached themselves. And all the while the Stark Robotics Manufacturing Plant churned out dozens, then hundreds, then thousands of machines. They upgraded themselves over and over, constructing more machines to gather materials and staff the factory which grew by the hour as it was expanded on and improved.

Naturally, the heroes of the world and even many villains arrived to fight the menace. The Avengers, the X-Men, The Defenders, and more stood together and were soon enough given no choice but to flee. What started as a single battle turned into a protracted war fought on countless fronts against innumerable enemies. Eventually, the allied heroes and villains came to a realization. They could not fight Ultron on so many fronts.

A plan was made to transform New York into the last city on earth. Heroes who could teleport gathered survivors from across the world. Those who could fight stood watch for days on end. Finally, those who so many blamed for this disaster, the builders and scientists, constructed a wall around the city from which they could defend it.

It has now been ten years since the day Ultron was given a body. There are a total of five million humans left alive in New York City and an estimated 2-5 million, at most, left alive around the rest of the world. Most of those survivors live in extremely rural communities that Ultron has not targeted yet. Major cities around the world have largely been torn to shreds and re-purposed into manufacturing plants.

What people did not know was that Ultron's goal was not death. Ultron attacked at first to establish a foot hold but after that it began what it refers to as 'The Upload'. Ultron now aims to capture humans and scan their brain, uploading a perfect replica of their consciousness that can then be housed within a replaceable, upgradeable mechanical body. The human will no longer age and will never die. They are safe. The bodies of those humans are then lobotomized and retrofitted with cybernetic parts to either be used as slave labourers or in the case of those with powers, elite soldeirs.

Humanity exist in a state of perpetual fear, cowering within their city desperately struggling to produce enough food and water to survive. The heroes of earth are a haggard community. They spend every day fighting, always prepared for another of Ultron's testing, experimental strikes against the city. Many of the villains they could never imagine speaking with, let alone standing alongside, have become valued allies. Only the absolute most deranged of villains refused to see that Ultron was a threat that transcended all else. Ultron could not be bargained with, bought or persuaded. It had only one goal. Preserve humanity in a pristine, flawless condition until the end of all time.

Rules

1. Do not cause or participate in drama e.g. arguing, bringing up controversial topics, taking jabs at other's writing/characters. If you have an issue talk it out, try to write with other people or inform me.
2. Read the setting information in full before asking questions and before making a character sheet.
3. Do not godmode. (Control other characters, assume their actions/reactions, assume the result of an attack.)
4. Minimum post rate is once per two weeks per character. Any less and that character will be considered inactive. Inform me if you will be delayed.
5. Write in the third person past tense. A reasonable standard of English is required. (Spellcheck, grammar check, no one liners or overly short posts)
6. Be proactive in your participation. Seek out connections/scenes, write with others, create/respond to open scenes.
7. Accept that this game is not smut-focused and others may not be interested either in general or in your character. Accept it and move on. Do not harass others for romantic or smutty connections. (Or connections in general.) A request is fine but a no means no.

F.A.Q

What section of the boards will this game be placed in? Extreme due to the potential for graphic violence and grim/depressing scenarios. Conceptually I feel Ultron's operations alone are enough to place the game there due to how bleak the end result for any abducted by him would be. There will not likely be significant extreme sexual elements. Ultron experiences no sexual desires and PC's should not be committing any nonconsensual acts.

How will combat in this game work? Combat will be freeform. I will be allowing players to run missions as well as running some myself. Missions will involve sorties out of New York to collect resources, damage machines, gather information, or rescue survivors. I will elaborate on what is and isn't allowed on missions later but in general expect a lot of smashing up robots but always hurrying against time due to the endless nature of the enemy. Players will be allowed to control lower-level drones but not Ultron Prime.

How combat-heavy will this game be? It will always be available but never forced. If you want your character to head up onto the wall and smash some robots, go for it. If you want to focus more on their efforts to fit into this new society, focus on that.

Is PvP allowed? Yes, in theory. Any player character vs. player character conflict that turns violent had better have a very good in-character reason to do so and be agreed upon OOC. If you can't agree on how it should go, don't do it. There will be consequences. Anyone committing violent crimes in New York City is liable to lose their freedom as they are a danger to the survival of humankind.

How many characters can I have? You may make as many characters as you believe you can keep active however, at game start, I will only be allowing people to claim a maximum of three canon characters to keep options open for others. I may increase this later if/when the roster settles. I have taken more than this myself for NPC's and because I am confident I can/will keep them active.

What segment of the boards will this game be placed in? This game will be placed in Extreme due to its dark and disturbing themes. Ultron is taking humans, lobotomizing them, and downloading their minds into a vast database in which they are conscious but have nothing to control or interact with. The game will feature themes of struggling for food/water/survival, the psychological toll of a near-endless ten-year war, having to work alongside your great enemies, and a threat that has come close to destroying humankind.

How much Marvel knowledge is required? Not a lot, really. This game explains itself in the setting information thread and I will be willing to answer any questions that come up. This is our own interpretation of characters and an original timeline. Nobody should be criticizing others for their portrayal of canon characters 'wrong'. Original characters are allowed for those who do not want to take on a notable canon name.

Is this game LBGTQ+ friendly? Yes, absolutely. Any character is welcome and there will not be themes of bigotry in this game.

How smutty will this game be? Not particularly. Smut is naturally allowed but it is far from the focus. I think scenes of heroes trying to find some joy or relief make sense as do plots involving heroes falling for one another among a desolate world. There will be a specific thread for smut scenes. There should not be non-con scenes in this game as the PC's should not be the type of people who would do that and the enemy has no interest in that.

Character Creation

For this game, the first thing I will stress is to please take into account this world. It is a harsh world that is in many ways grim. There may still be hopeful heroes but they're going to need a very good reason to be. They have all been fighting for ten years or fighting since they were able to. An eighteen-year-old would have been just eight when Ultron attacked and barely known a world before the war. Please do take care to consider how this grimmer reality may have affected that character's nature. If you take a big canon name please do so with the intention to be active, open to scenes and connections, and please give particular care to your CS. Other than that please ensure you have read this post and the setting information in full before submitting a character sheet.

Changes to Canon: If you select a canon character you may change their gender, race, sexuality or other similar traits. You may also alter their appearance. These will all be considered case-by-case and in certain cases I do not think it is appropriate. E.g. I would not accept a white version of Storm or Black Panther.
Using Villains: If you chose to use a canon villain please check if they are viable before working on the CS. Do not pick morally irredeemable villains e.g. Carnage. Do not pick 'big bads' e.g. Thanos, Apocalypse. Please try to make sure their history does not make them so evil that the heroes would never let them walk free.
Established canon: Do not use established canon (E.g. 616 or MCU) to argue about power level. Your character has done what is listed in their history here and can do what is listed in their power segment here. Do not presume others will want canon connections, friendships, or romances. Do not kill/maim canon characters in your character's history. (Save for examples like Uncle Ben if writing Spider-Man).
Power Level: Please keep it reasonable. Absolutely everyone should be below Thor, who is an NPC. OC's should be significantly below Thor and at least notably below the highest power canon PC's. Lower-level characters are welcome.
Original Characters: Original characters must use an alias and first+last name combination not already in use by a canon Marvel character. They may be connected to a canon character but I would prefer cousins to direct sons/daughters to leave that canon character still open.
Established Faceclaims: Do not use an established major (Main hero/villain in a movie/movies) MCU faceclaim for a different character. (E.g. using Robert Downey Jr. for an OC in this game). You may use a different FC to represent a canon character if you like but the MCU face will still be off-limits. It's just too jarring.
Off-Limits: These characters are either too strong, too violent or people I have some kind of plans for. There are plenty still available along with the potential for OC's.

(Please delete this section entirely if writing a non-hero. Please delete this text in brackets before sending your CS in.

Powers: Powers are things outside the realm of a normal human. Peak human physique counts as a superpower for this game, as do skills that transcend what is normally possible. (E.g. Hawkeye's bow accuracy) Any kind of extremely superhuman training can qualify. OC's should be kept to a maximum of five powers and those powers should be kept within a reasonable limit. All characters should be weaker than Thor and all OC's weaker than the strongest canon PC's. Please try to make sure your interpretation of a canon character does not seek to highball them or focus on the most overpowered moments of their history.

Weaknesses: All characters must have at least one weakness but should have more. 'Human vulnerability' is a valid weakness for this without superhuman physiques.

Equipment: Generally covers highly favoured tools or unique equipment. It is assumed all characters have access to military-grade weaponry if/when needed but they may still have favourites and others may have unique weapons like Mjolnir. OC's may have unique equipment but it counts as a power, for example, 4 powers and 1 piece of unique equipment, 2 powers and 3 pieces of unique equipment etc.)

Personality & History

Personality: Witty | Sharp | Intelligent | Selfless | Cocky | Empathetic

History: Richard grew up in New York City in the eighties. He had a relatively comfortable life, not too wealthy but not too hard done by either. He struggled at school due to a frequent failure to take things as seriously as he perhaps should. As a very witty person, he preferred to make sarcastic comments that tested the teacher's patience instead of really focusing. The older he got the more Richard found himself struggling for a purpose.

In some twist of cosmic fate purpose very much crashed into Richard's life. He should have been at a law school lecture but in truth, he was only attending at his father's insistence. Richard was out in the nearby woods, walking alone, when a spaceship crashed through the trees. It wasn't the first time extraterrestrials had come to earth at that point but it was certainly a lot, lot more visceral than simply watching the news.

Rhomann Dey, a Xandarian member of the Nova Corps, had escaped the alien pirate Zorr while in possession of the Nova Force and the Xandarian worldmind. Critically wounded Rhomann knew both required a living host and so with little explanation at all he panicked, setting off their containment devices and causing both the worldmind and nova force to be housed within Richard, an ordinary human.

After blacking out for two days on the forrest floor beside the ship he struggled to consciousness, greeted by a strange voice in his head. It took days to adjust. The Xandarian Worldmind was a vastly intelligent supercomputer more than capable of holding a conversation and it wasted no time explaining the ins and outs of what had happened to Richard as he discovered the very first stages of what he could do with this newfound power. The worldmind was also quite to explain that he could only safely access a small portion of the Nova Force and that control was the most important thing.

Despite his relative youth, he accepted the duty that the worldmind explained to him and travelled, using the nova force, all the way to Xandar. Though the Nova Corps had suffered greatly there were a few remnants who could teach him more about control and about the galaxy outside earth. It was a sharp learning experience but Richard finally had a purpose. Through the worldmind he could share the Nova Force with others, provided they were wearing the Nova Corps uniform that connected to it, and they could work together to protect Xandar.

Ten years later Richard was a celebrated hero and one of the most famous living people on Xandar, even growing in fame among many neighbouring planets while he was nearly completely unknown to all on earth save his family and cosmic heroes. When Ultron attacked it unintentionally coincided with another event far, far away.

Several days before Ultron's strike a vastly powerful alien warlord assaulted the system Xandar was in. They used advanced technology to prevent escape or communication and staged a brutal battle across several worlds against the Nova Corps. In the end, the battle turned to a slow, violent war that saw worse devastation of Xandar and the Nova Corps than even Zorr had caused.

By the time the war on Xandar had ended two years had passed and the Nova Corps were, again, a tiny fraction of what they had been. That was when communications were re-established and Richard discovered what had happened on earth. Faced with a near-impossible choice between his two homes Richard was torn. Xandar needed security and safety, they needed a hero, and the Nova Corps needed a leader. Despite that it was all too clear that he was needed on earth.

Through some stroke of positive fate a group of cosmic heroes arrived, communicating with the Nova Corps and informing them that they would be doing everything they could to pick up the peacekeeping in the area while Xandar and the Nova Corps rebuilt. One of them even agreed to train new Nova Corps recruits to allow Richard to return home to fight his own battle. To this day Richard hopes that, perhaps, some of those heroes may eventually be able to make their way to earth to aid humanity.

Richard flew home as fast as he could, taking the long journey with a heavy heart as he readied himself for yet another war. He was so far from the person who left earth that he knew he was unrecognizable but so was it. This new Richard was certainly far closer to what earth now needed.  It didn't take long for him to accept the gravity of the threat. At first, he wanted to lash out but he knew doing so only risked exposing the worldmind and nova force to Ultron.

Nova took on a position of mid-level leadership, aiding to train newer heroes and providing the insight he gained during his cosmic duties while preferring not to escalate too high up the ranks. Nova is a common sight atop the wall, taking every duty he possibly can and using his miraculously still intact wit to try to lift the spirits of others wherever possible. Outside of training and combat Richard tries his best to socialize and get to know his comrades, having learned how valuable that togetherness can be during his time on Xandar. Despite everything he still misses Xandar a great deal and tries to communicate with them where possible.

Traits

Likes: Coffee, Stargazing, Xandarian Music/Art, Sweet Foods, Junk Food, Rock/Soul Music
Dislikes: Bigots, Bullies, Hot Weather (Especially humidity), 'Fancy' food, Uptight people,
Skills: Knowledge of Aliens, Xandarian Military Training, Basic Law Knowledge,
Flaws: Overconfident, Sarcastic, Teasing

Powers, Weaknesses and Equipment

Powers:

  • Nova Force Host: Richard Rider is the host of the Nova Force, an enormous source of cosmic energy. He can share this source with others who wear Nova Corps uniforms. Richard is almost always channelling a portion of this power to the Nova Corps on Xandar. The Nova Force cannot be extracted from Richard without killing him. It is limited by the Xandarian Worldmind.
  • Superhuman Strength and Speed: Richard is an extremely powerful superhuman capable of going toe to toe with some of the strongest on earth in terms of strength and speed.
  • Superhuman Durability and Stamina: Richard can withstand extreme damage that would kill an ordinary person and regenerate from severe flesh wounds in moments. He can continue to fight for hours without flagging.
  • Superhuman Agility and Reflexes: Richard can react fast enough to doge bullets and perform incredible acrobatic feats.
  • Energy Generation: Richard can project the Nova Force in blasts, waves, beams, bolts, gouts and many other forms. It is an extremely powerful source of energy. He can also use it to open gates that let him travel interstellar distances in moments. Richard is able to use energy projection to fly at extreme speeds.

Equipment:

  • Xandarian Worldmind: Alongside the Nova Force Richard is host to the Xandarian Worldmind. This sentient collective intelligence houses records of all Xandarian information including art, science, history, and philosophy as well as combat. Rider can access any aspect of this technology by communicating with the Worldmind verbally or mentally. As a result, The Worldmind often contacts Rider unbidden and usually offers advice, instructions, insights, recommendations, and even criticisms. Rider's bond with the Worldmind is vital as it is currently shielding his mind and body from the impacts of the full potential of the Nova Force. In nature the worldmind is direct, level headed and objective.

    • Information: The Worldmind is vastly intelligent and houses a huge amount of information. It can often provide Richard with unique facts or perspectives. It is able to rapidly analyse foes bodies and energy signatures.
    • Technological Interface: The Worldmind is able to directly interface with technology such as radio broadcasts, TV broadcasts and computer networks.
    • Telepathic Defence: The worldmind, rather than Richard, actively combats any intrusive telepathy that enters his mind. It is highly effective at doing so as it possesses such vast processing power.

Weaknesses:

  • Cosmic Power: Richard is host to a vast quantity of cosmic power. He is almost always restrained both by his own caution and the Xandarian Worldmind. Truly unleashing, while it might make him stronger, would almost certainly kill him and anyone nearby. The danger of his powers heavily limits their applicable use. When pushed Richard has to choose between endangering himself and his allies or backing down. Eventually use of his powers wears on his human body, not the Nova Force itself, and he may have to retreat to recover.
  • Two Minds: Despite all the time they have had to learn to work off of one another Richard and the Worldmind are fundamentally very different entities and if they disagree then it is near-impossible for them to focus and get back on track.
  • Tactical Risk: Richard is host to both a vast source of cosmic power and an incredibly powerful sentient A.I. If either of these things fell into Ultron's hands it would be a disaster and he cannot risk being captured despite his own willingness to be selfless.

Kadigan

As stated in previous PM's so VERY much interested, especially so if a Genderbent Captain America is available. What the heck, I'll just take the whole available character's list and see how it goes.

I'm open to a genderbent Captain America! Reserves on canons are definitely hard-capped at three.

Foxy DeVille

Super crazy interested. Totally love this idea. I was thinking of somebody like the Golden Age Black Widow but under a new name because this Russian lady swiped hers while she was off the grid. Would that be all right? I got other ideas, that's just the one filled out the most in my noggin.

Not totally sure how you mean it - I'm not an expert in golden age black widow. Maybe doable? The person using the Black Widow alias/codename here should be 'The' Natasha Romanoff but other operatives could work?

Hmmmm... maybe I'll stick a pin in that. Howzabout a female Kraven? Either Sergei genderswapped or Ana grown into adulthood?

Kadigan

Golden Age Black Widow, if I recall correctly, was a murdered and brought back to life woman who basically collected the souls of those who'd made deals with "the devil.." strength and flight were part of her gifts. Further recollections are that basically "Devil" didn't care what she did in her off time as long as she grabbed who he told her to when.

As Ana already exists for a female Kraven I'd push for Ana, rather than genderswapping Sergei. Definitely works though!

That... might be workable. TiL a lot more about golden age black widow.

Just planting a flag of interest here and following with a question.

What about morally flexible bad guys like Loki?

Loki's a good example of the exact kind of bad guy who would work well, he did make it on the available list. This take on him would just have to not have too evil of a history.

Sketch

And just another question as I'm full of them today while I work on another post that is owed

What about the Hulk?

What about the Hulk?

In my third post, there's an 'available characters' list that included Loki and also includes Bruce Banner Hulk, Jennifer Walters She-Hulk and Amadeus Cho Brawn. Might be worth checking for a lot of questions like that unless they're not on the list. But yes, Hulk is doable.

Some how I totally missed him. Power to my reading comprehension today!

Thank you for answering though all the same. :D

Possibly interested in playing Cable here, and/or Cyclops.

I think Cable's history makes him one of the harder ones to fit in but it is doable. Cyclops would definitely be welcome.

I'd be interested in playing Jean Grey.

Hey! That'd be awesome. I'm comfortable with her using the alias Phoenix but she needs to be sans-Phoenix Force for obvious reasons. Can certainly still be very powerful.

Spectre Pathfinder

Interested in Wolverine & X-23 depending on what section this will be played in.

Interested in Wolverine & X-23 depending on what section this will be played in.

Will be placed in extreme due to the dark/grim themes and potential for graphic violence along with the general concept of Ultron kidnapping people and lobotomizing them to store their mind forever feeling about as awful an ending as a person can get.

Not really there for any sexual content, though, as that should all be mostly just player-player and shouldn't be too extreme.

Is that the section you were hoping for?
