1792 Dutch banned slavery imports in their colonies, though full implementation took a decade longer

We might be bringing it back though. Senate elections in the Netherlands were just won by a party that claims white people are inherently more evolved, and that women are genetically unsuited for leadership.

Oh yes, and they deny that man made climate change is a big problem....

That would be Geert Wilders' party, right?

France still had human zoos during my father's lifetime. Slavery was abolished "but". Not even speaking of what was going on in the colonies.

Found it 1833. England passed the Slavery Abolition act. Bit later than I though but way earlier than the UD
That only stopped the sale of slaves not the practice of slavery.
It only became illegal in the UK during the 1950's when the UK signed up to the ECHR.
But UK legislation making slavery illegal only came in to effect about 2012.

His (former?) client would make an excellent tv talk show host. :)

Couldnt decide where to post this ... it is news... but it is also Trump related, so staff may decide it needs to be moved.

Anywho!

Trump's campaign is now trying to tell the media who they can have on their shows/panels.

So, they want TV shows to no longer book or show anyone who has made a provably false and/or wildly exaggerated claim? Cool, I hope they're ready for the backfire.

https://thegrapevine.theroot.com/report-charges-against-jussie-smollett-dropped-record-1833575118

Quote“Today, all criminal charges against Jussie Smollett were dropped and his record wiped clean of the filing of this tragic complaint against him,” read a statement via Smollett’s attorneys Tina Glandian and Patricia Brown Holmes. “Jussie was attacked by two people he was unable to identify on January 29th. He was a victim who was vilified and made to appear as a perpetrator as a result of false and inappropriate remarks made to the public causing an inappropriate rush to judgement [sic].”

Rather interesting. First he was the victim in peoples eyes, then he was the villain and now all charges dropped and even wiped from his record.

Holy crap - that article says that Mark Geragos (you might remember him from the Michael Jackson and Scott Peterson cases) was Avenetti's co-conspirator in the case that Luna linked up-thread. O_O

An official for the National Rifle Association sought out a conspiracy theorist who spread misinformation about Sandy Hook to cast doubt on the Parkland Shooting. This was revealed via a series of internal e-mails.

When the largest and richest gun lobbying group does shit like this among their many other offenses, it is time for the 2nd Amendment to find better defenders in Washington.

I think we should just repeal the 2nd amendment. It was designed to allow citizens to protect themselves against a government takeover of their property. Pretty sure the danger of that happening has long since passed... maybe unless you are on the southern border, then Our Dear Leader might be getting ready to take your land to build his fucking wall.

The irony. The conspiracy theorists were themselves part of a conspiracy. I hope this makes them see how they dig themselves into the crazy hole others see them in.

The right to bear arms is a bit more important than just the militia aspect.  :/

My family were the victims of a home invasion when I was a child. The only reason we survived was because my father owned a gun and was able to drive off the people trying to kill us. We lived too far away for police to respond quickly; the nearest police station was over twenty minutes away. Meaning that if we'd waited for help we'd have died waiting. Guns were essential to our self-defense at the time.

I know people are pissed about Trump (I am, too), and I know people would like more stringent gun control to help prevent tragedies (I do, too, because some types of gun just don't need to be on the market and the NRA is a giant trash fire of an organization), but repealing the 2nd amendment outright?

No, thank you. I'm extremely liberal in my political opinions, but repealing the 2nd Amendment is not the way to go about realizing progressive values. But the first step to responsibly maintained 2nd Amendment rights is definitely going to be getting discussion of gun control away from organizations like the NRA, who have absolutely no concept of having a reasonable discussion on the matter and have been bad-faith lobbyists and extremely loud liars for years and years. Would I want to own a gun myself now? No, not really. Do I want the freedom to be able to own a firearm and responsibly maintain it should there come a time again in my life if I lived somewhere isolated and vulnerable? Yes.

Hypothetical: Let's say the 2nd Amendment gets repealed. Non-police and non-military citizens are expected to turn in firearms or join a militia in order to access them.

Police in East Los Angeles or Harlem get a report that a group of Latino/African-Americans are refusing to disarm on account of a generations-long distrust of government and police tyranny. Presuming that the repeal of said Amendment is the only major thing that changes about this country, chances are the police department is still going to be made up of people who did not grow up in said neighborhoods or have contacts with the locals to thus earn their trust.

This is a pretty big issue in quite a few black and Hispanic neighborhoods.

Look at Ferguson. Look at Philando Castile.

What do you think is going to happen?

Oniya

I think that the first clause in the second amendment needs to be addressed far more often than it is:

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Show me the regulations.
