News from the UK: Home Secretary Amber Rudd has resigned over her office destroying the only documents proving citizenship for thousands of ‘Windrush’ migrants, who have lived and worked here all their lives. Her replacement is Sajid Javid.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-43947008

Pros:
UK’s first Home Secretary from an ethnic minority background
Son of a working-class migrant
Not a hard-Brexit supporter, so that faction within the government won’t gain a dangerous majority

Cons:
Former investment banker, with more ties to the City of London than to local people
Despite his background, voted in favour of the same Immigration Act that just got his predecessor kicked out
Has a poor voting record in general for social issues

The government are now belatedly planning to fast-track citizenship for the Windrush migrants.

In one particularly juicy bit of news, he was alleged to have groped the Crown Princess on her butt at some sort of official event (not one of "his" events) in 2006, at a mansion belonging to the Academy. This is said to have been witnessed both by her father the King, then permanent secretary Horace Engdahl and his (later divorced) wife and prominent feminist Ebba Witt-Brattström. Engdahl and Brattsröm are famously not friends after they divorced, but she doesn't seem to be the only witness ready to back the allegation. The King is said to have ordered Engdahl, soon after, to make sure that Princess Victoria and Mr. Arnault were never again left alone in the same room. ^_ ^

Groping the King's daughter - while in His Majesty's presence...  that takes solid brass bowling balls or a death wish.  I'm amazed that the worst he got was essentially a restraining order.

Yep. What's more, she's the heir-apparent to the throne - and the future "high protector" of the Academy. :)

We need to go back to the days where the Royal Family can execute people for this! *growls at him* The Crown Princess is just such a sweetheart.

Yep, the last official execution in Sweden, in 1910, actually used a guillotine. :)

And yes, she is. https://files.hant.se/uploads/2015/06/Nobel-11JPG-650x718.jpg

This feels like something a D&D player would have their Chaotic Neutral character do.

"I roll to grope the princess!"

I don't expect her to show up and testify at a future trial about sexual harassment, even if there might be one. :D

Kanye West is at it again, saying American black slavery "sounds like a choice" and hinting that the U.S. black have become mentally enslaved by their own efforts to keep the memory, the history of centuries of slavery alive. ("It's like we're in a mental prison - I prefer the word "prison", the word slavery is too closely connected to blacks. Just as the Holocaust is about the Jews, slavery is linked to blacks").

Let's see...The only persons in pre-1865 North America I've heard about for whom slavery could be called a free choice were a few white servant women who married black slaves and, after the law at the time, became the property of their husband's owner (this was possible in a few of the British colonies, Virginia for instance, but from the late 17th century all marriages between whites and blacks were banned outright). One of these women: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eleanor_Butler. I don't think anyone made a free choice to even remain in slavery, still less to be shipped across the sea in chains and sold.  >:(

Okay, Kanye is being flippant here, but the joke is both offensive and misinformed. And just because he and his wife are media megastars and able to buy themselves free from having to encounter racism and inherited poverty, it doesn't mean that would be true for all black people.

I just ignore Kanye, he's kind of an imbecile, from any perspective. He's seriously gotta be one of the dumbest people alive.

I'mma really happy for you, and I'mma let you finish, but Kanye West is one of the dumbest people of all time.

The only way his argument could have any ground to stand on, would be if he was referring to how some African tribes sold prisoners of war to the Europeans in exchange for muskets, gun powder, etc. But something tells me that isn't what he is referring to.

By Royal order, finally members who have decided to leave can actually leave the Swedish Academy (and get it recognized, so a new member can be selected). Also, persons who have been absent for two years or more may now be written off the rolls even without an application for it.

Tomorrow, the ten members left (out of eighteen) are expected to announce if there will actually be a Nobel prize for literature this autumn. If the answer is no, it could be postponed till next year with two awards being given then; that's a solution which has been used a few times before.

More and more universities taken over, trashed, and now a war memorial defaced. I'm so sad. This isn't the France I'm used to... https://francais.rt.com/france/50320-monuments-mort-tague-degradations-bloqueurs-ens

What's the underlying cause, for those of us who don't speak French?

Oniya

There seem to be a number of issues being lumped together - I saw something about a new thing called the 'ORE law', which appears to be some kind of selection process for who gets into university; but the tagging on the monument seemed to be directed at deaths at the hands of police, including Rémi Fraisse and Adama Traoré.

(This was based on a quick scan through via Google Translate, followed by some Internet diving on key words and phrases to find English websites.)

All this. Also various demands about inclusive gendered writing and racialized/non white only meetings. It is VERY new here.

It's exactly fifty years since the May revolt, *the* modern French student revolt - I bet that adds some heated aspirations into the mix too.

We will see where this goes. I hope it doesn't end up giving the crazies the exact thing they have always been preaching about (the last thing they need is validation) and at the same time doesn't go too crazy to the other extreme.
