Character Sheet Thread:  http://elliquiy.com/forums/index.php?topic=157439.0

This is an interest check only.  Please do not submit characters or ask for a character sheet at this time.

Law & Order.

Blue Bloods.

The Shield.

NYPD Blue.

Miami Vice.

Hill Street Blues.

Stories about cops, their lives, their jobs and the people they work with.  Compelling drama set against the best and worst of society.  Fascinating characters, moral grey areas, life and death decisions made in moments and dissected across days.  Homicide and vice and narcotics and art thefts and burglary and domestic disturbances and just walking a beat.  These are the frames in which we see your character.

It would not be 24, Alias or anything of that genre.  CSI types, while welcome, must realize that forensic techs rarely see the streets and will not be the focus of the game.  The same holds for DAs and medical examiners.

Is there an interest for a game in this setting?

This does sound like a really fun idea. Consider me definitely interested.

The idea of playing a forensics technician really does grab me though and since I can be a bit of a slower poster at times, playing someone who is outside the spotlight and primary focus appeals.

If the police work out of one of the larger police-complexes then it might have an onsite lab and my techie could chat with the police when they're back in the office/drop by to get their results.

Considering I've been waiting for a good Crime Drama or Police Procedural to pop up on the forums for a while, I'm definitely interested. Count me in for sure.

Count me in on this. Would rookie cop be OK to play? Or are you thinking more experienced officers?

My goodness!  I really am surprised that this generated so much interest.  Thank you all for responding, for your patience and for your questions.  Let me answer some of them and then I'll address the next stage; character creation.

You have dibs on our one and only forensic tech, crime scene guru and all around techy character, Caehlim.  I believe you understand that it won't be quite as CSI driven as a dedicated CSI game, but I'm fine with you coming out on scenes as the story calls for it.  What I need you to decide is whether or not you're a pure technician, or if you have law enforcement powers and pack a badge and a gun.

Baalborn87 said:

Watching a rookie gain experience would be a nice addition to the cast.  Please feel free to do so.  What I need you to decide is are you a rookie to the entire police force, or just a rookie to a detective squad and already have some police experience?

Character Creation:

Please begin to generate your characters.  Here is the generic character sheet template to use as a guide.  Let's be reasonable about how capable we make our characters.  I doubt we're all former SEALS who also model for Prada while living off our trust fund and playing the guitar.  N'cest pas?

Code: [Select]
[floatright][/floatright]
Name:
Age:
Height:
Weight:
Assignment: (Homicide, Vice, Property Crimes, Patrol, etc.)
Rank:
Brief Appearance:
Brief Background:

And one final thing.  Where would you like this story to be set?  I was thinking New York City, but am open to other venues if that's your preference.  Anyone have any strong opinions?

Name: Eric Weiss
Age: 28
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 151 lbs.
Assignment: Homicide
Rank: Detective
Brief Appearance: Has dark brown hair that he often has to use his desk scissors on if it's touching his collar in the back, and blue eyes. He's not exactly the beefiest guy, all things considered; he's lanky, a bit taller than average, and skinny. Since he has a bit more free reign over his daily wear as a detective, he tends to go for black, grey, and dark brown clothing, usually with a tie in an understated shade. He has a fondness for mirrored aviator sunglasses, and indulges that fondness whenever it happens to be sunny.
Brief Background: Once upon a time, Eric was on the fast track to becoming a prosecutor. He had graduated cum laude from Harvard, and was a shoo-in for their law school. One semester later, he dropped out. The whole thing wasn't quite what he was hoping. He moved back in with his parents in New York City (or wherever we're going to set this) and began attending the police academy instead. He proved himself to think quickly on his feet when working as a patrol officer and, rather unsurprisingly, had a head for legalese. He was made a detective about two years after he joined the force, and has been working in the homicide department since then.

I like Eric.  It's going to be neat to see how his brain plays out against anyone who chooses a more meathead type.  Good work, Raven.  Here, have an extra juicy eyeball.

Name: Nicholas Cooper

Age: 44

Height: 6' 2"

Weight: 205

Assignment: Homicide

Rank: Detective

Brief Appearance: Nicholas tends to wear expensive clothes and watches, and usually cares a lot about his appearance as he feels it portrays him to others. He is in shape without being exceedingly muscular or athletic and has a scar on the left side of his neck barely covered by the collar of his shirts.

Brief Background: Nicholas started his work with the police in Chicago and has many years of experience in their vice division, due to an incident with a superior he asked to be transferred and eventually landed in homicide in a very different jurisdiction, he often tries to figure things by recalling prior events however he doesn't like to share his past with others.

Nicholas is approved purely on the strength of his chest hair alone.  :)  I think his vice experience will give him a lot of street level contacts and maybe even some juicy dirt on figures higher up in the hierarchy of the city's social structure.

Well I was planning for him to be flashy with expensive stuff, that and him being secretive about his past has to make people to wonder how he can afford everything with a detective's salary,

Tall, dark and handsome beautiful.  Yummy!

I can see some enmity from the upper brass given her quick rise through the ranks without paying what they consider her dues.  And there will be the "just because she's a black woman" nonsense to deal with.  A compelling character!

No problems, as much as CSI is a very fun show, it's not very realistic about police procedure. When I watched the episodes I always found myself wondering where the actual policemen were, it seemed like the entire criminal investigation was being run by lab technicians.

I see my character as a good sounding board for the others. He's not in the investigation itself, but he's part of the police community and has the necessary clearance to be told the details. Makes him a good impartial third party for people to talk to if they're having personality clashes with the others or just want to talk about their current cases.

I think I'll go pure technician. He's a police consultant and forensic specialist, but not an actual cop. I'm just working on a character sheet now.

Name: Chris Wright
Age: 26
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 80kg
Assignment: Forensic Evidence Technician, IT-Guru and all around dogsbody.
Rank: Civilian.

Brief Appearance: Chris takes care of himself, and although he rarely gets off work at a decent hour, he keeps a membership at a 24 hour gym so that he can work out every day. He's health conscious and it tends to show, both in the salads and healthy-foods he eats at work but also in his appearance. He tends to end up with stubble anyway after pulling long shifts, so settled on maintaining a groomed stubble so that it looks less out of place.

Brief Background: The son of a doctor and a police officer, Chris was no stranger to the idea of hard work and jobs that involved duty. He did well throughout school, and although his parents never really pushed him to follow in their footsteps he found himself naturally sharing their passions for the sciences and policework. With the growing focus on forensics in mainstream culture and the police force, these two fields had a natural meeting point and he graduated from college with double degrees in Chemistry and Forensic Criminalistics. He has worked hard to find a place for himself in the local crimelab and has been working ridiculous overtime hours ever since as the resident forensics technician.

Personality: He's friendly and enjoys the company of others, but tends to be a little shy and introverted at first particularly around large crowds. He's also eager to help others, which has a tendency of him getting more work than he can easily handle, particularly in such an understaffed technical department. He also tends to be a naturally very calm person, tries to avoid conflict and naturally acts as a bit of a therapist/counsellor to others.

He actually has an office, but spends most of his time in his lab itself. The adjoining office he has turned into a little break room, with a comfortable couch, a TV and X-box. While he's waiting for a test to complete or results to come back he'll sometimes relax in the office and welcomes police officers who are into games to drop around and play on the X-box whenever they need to relax as well.

I can see Chris taking some hassle from cops who see him eating salads instead of vending machine frosted donuts and bad coffee.  That's a nice touch, and I love the dogsbody description.

Yeah, I don't see him always getting the most respect from some of the officers around. Some would respect his integrity and dedication, but others might see him as a bit of a pansy/geek. Combined with his willingness to help other people, I see him being called into the briefing room to set up a projector or even getting everyone else coffees when he's out on his break.

Name: Isaac Hallsey
Age: 36
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 177lbs
Assignment: Homicide
Rank: Lieutenant
Brief Appearance: Isaac tends to dress in suits when on duty and tee shirts and jeans when off, proving that he is as much your average joe as he looks. His dark brown hair is usually left relatively uncombed and falling into place on it's own, though he does try his best to keep it from going completely wild. He is almost never seen without his clean trimmed beard, though he has occasionally worn just a goatee, though never for long. He keeps himself in shape and it shows quite well with his build, broad shoulders flaring out his coat to boast his toned chest. Isaac often keeps his badge on his belt on the left front so that it is out of the way but always in sight, and keeps his sidearm tucked on his right hip. When at court or typing up a report, he usually wears a pair of black rimmed glasses, his farsightedness getting the better of him.
Brief Background: Isaac is the classic "good cop", having rose through the ranks with good work on smaller cases and making sure all the I's are dotted and the T's are crossed. It's what put him into internal affairs for most of his career, and what caused him to be so hated despite his well mannered personality. He was more than happy to make sure officers that broke the rules one too many times got the reprimand they deserved, but he was also the one that acted as devil's advocate in defense of one of his fellow officers. It was a fine line to walk, and Isaac did his best to walk it. It cost him a marriage when one officer had an affair with his wife, but he turned to work to get his mind off it. The betrayal still showed in his work and soon, he was transferred out of IA, only to find himself in the ranks of his most common cases: Homicide. In exchange for the forced transfer, he was also promoted in the process, though he didn't know they planned to promote him regardless. Most officers in Homicide still resent him for working one of their cases, but he tries his best to make the best of the situation.

A rough character sheet, but I think it gets the point across. I want him to be hated despite being a genuinely nice guy, because sometimes who you are and how people see you are completely different. I especially see Nicholas being a bit antagonistic early on... Oh the ideas...
