Interest check: Mind Control University (Female chars only)

I've got an idea for a character that works by changing reality by changing peoples' social media profiles. Would that work here?

I don't see how that's mind control, and what about people without social media  (or the internet, or computers, or etc)

Well the idea is to control how people think based on what's in their profiles, but that's kind of why I asked - to see if I should go with it or back to the drawing board.

Well when you say "control how they think" do you mean in the sense that you change details of people's profiles to trick them? Or is it like a JoJo stand where if you put "person X is in a relationship with person Y" they'll suddenly magically fall in love with each other? I think the later would be more in line with the mind control theme, but it would be a lot harder to balance I imagine.

I'm kind of inclined to say it doesn't fit in here.  For one, the idea is that students are all at risk of falling under someone else's command and have to be constantly aware of attempts to control them.  If someone's able to get pretty complete control over someone remotely like this, it would stand out quite a bit.  Also, that doesn't seem to account for characters that don't have social media profile.  Aside from people that live with the technology and refuse to use it, you're going to have people from worlds that don't have that level of technology yet - some characters are from more fantasy-oriented worlds that are generally still in the Middle Ages, for instance - or that use technology well beyond what your character would be able to use at the start.

That being said, the concept could work with some tweaking.  Maybe your character comes from a world where magitech is the norm, and they've made a custom spell that, when cast on someone, adds that person's profile to your character's database, and as long as the spell's still in effect on them, you can edit the database to control them however you please.

I'll be writing up the IC thread a bit later today, to get things started.  One note that I had forgotten about however, is that everyone should have a roommate.  Your character and your roommate will have the same access to the dorm room, and either can allow guests in without necessarily asking for permission from the other.  Which means, in a setting like this, it's rather important to find a roommate you can trust... or force into being trustworthy *evil grin*

Anyway, feel free to pick roommates yourself, or I can assign them to anyone that isn't sure.  Looks like we've got 8 characters in the character thread now, so that should give us a nice even pairing.

Unfortunately, I'll be going on vacation starting early on Monday, so I won't be very available for GMing anything that comes up until we get back, likely the next Tuesday.

I'd actually be fine with that, Hobbes~!  Basically, when I say Magepunk, I'm talking about a setting very similar to Steampunk, but where magic is a very real thing, and is often parallel to technology (Howl's Moving Castle and The Golden Compass are a couple of sources I consider to be Magepunk).  Hope that gives you a better idea of what kind of girl Trish is!

Hi guys,

I have an unusual character concept I would like to run by you...

One day headmistress Mesmerra was out for a stroll when she came upon a teenager about to throw herself from a bridge. To prevent the suicide, Mesmerra temporarily mind-controlled her until she was safe. Further conversations revealed that the teenager, whose name is Darcy, had been driving home from a party one night a year prior, drunk. There was an accident, and the passenger of her car was killed--her sister!

Unable to forgive herself, Darcy is determined to take her own life. Mesmerra proposed a solution...

In short, Mesmerra mind-wiped Darcy (with her full consent). Now Darcy is a 'plant' in the student body. As the school year progresses, Mesmerra gives select students the opportunity to mind-control Darcy in various ways, and to various ends. Though Darcy cannot mind-control herself, Mesmerra is able to vary her mind-control resistance, making her easier or tougher as the need may be. The challenges can range from the simple to the extreme (I have a pretty broad range of Ons), with rewards given to the first person to win the challenge. After each challenge, Mesmerra does a limited wipe, removing Darcy's memory of the event in question. At the beginning of each school year, Mesmerra wipes Darcy's mind completely, and the process begins again.

(Plot Twist! If you guys want, this could have been going on for several years now, with Darcy now old enough to be a 'Teacher'.)

I would have to give that some thought, honestly.  A large part of the game comes from Mesmerra being honest (if indirect) with the students.  It would go against her game to have something that's an outright lie like this (to have a "plant" as one of the students).  Plus, I don't think that, being a literal deity, Mesmerra would be the type to go out of her way like this to save someone.

That being said, I don't want to shoot down the idea entirely.  As long as she'd be presented as someone that's not a student (maybe she's going around the town outside of the school, and teachers can point her out to students as an "extra credit" assignment if they ask), then I think we can get the idea to work.
