Clan History and Description
The McDibble clan is an ancient pureblood wizard bloodline apparently rooting into the Scotland pictish shamanic/druidic culture. What that ancient people called themselves is actually unknown. The Latin word Picti first occurs in a panegyric written by Eumenius in AD 297 and is taken to mean "painted or tattooed people" (from Latin pingere "to paint”) It is true that much ink has been spilt over what the ancient writers meant by Picts, but even the most knowledgeable wizard scholars cannot say anything oher than it seems to be a generic term for people living north of the Forth-Clyde isthmus who raided the Roman Empire. Pictish recorded history begins in the Dark Ages although it appears that they were not the dominant power in Northern Britain for the entire period, since they had to deal with with the Gaels and the Angles. Actually, the neighbouring Anglian kingdom of Deira (Bernicia and Deira later being called Northumbria) was soon to become the most powerful kingdom in Britain and a force to be reckoned with. The McDibble Clan lived its existence amongst those war torn tribes.. a selfish and secluded family allied with no one and whose aid was sought only in the direst of moments. At first based in the fortress of Craig Phadrig, near Inverness, and under the protection of king Bridei Mac Maelchon the McDibbles now reside near Inverfaigag Village in Scotland.. on the shores of Lock Ness. Differently than more power monger families like the Mengsk, the McDibble bloodline has never counted many individuals and the whole clan had never counted more than three/four family groups at the same time. There is a little known legend about a Mysterious greek woman, direct descendant of a dark wizard named Herpo the Foul coming all the way from Thessal to Scotland in order to find protection from a death sentence. The tale tells about the mcDibble clan coming to her aid… battling and vanquishing her pursuers. She eventually married the clan leader and, according to the legend, that is the reason for which the Clan members favors Greek names for their sons and daughters. The McDibble clan is very tight knit and secluded and takes great care into maintaining the integrity of its pureblood bloodline, avoiding inbreeding and carefully forging alliances with other families. They are extremely careful at avoiding contamination although their mindset has some points of difference from the classic blood racism that is so common in many of the strictest pureblood families. Simply put, muggles and muggleborns are culturally different from them and the McDibbles aren’t interested in mixing their cultures together. They don’t like the muggle style of life and want nothing to do with it.. this does not imply considering them inferior in any way. Every McDibble considers the right of being defined a true pureblood something that needs to be earned. The strict upbringing in the McDibble clans makes of its members extremely stubborn and driven individuals, all of which convinced that the ends almost always justify the means. The vast Majority of the members of the McDibble Clan are either Slytherin or Ravenclaw. There may be the occasional Hufflepuff although that house usually lacks the necessary cynicism to really make a difference in the clan. No Gryffindor has ever been born amongst the McDibble although there have been cases of marriages with members of that house. Curiously, the few Gryffindors ever married in the McDibble clan have all lived positive experiences giving the fierce loyalty and protectiveness of the McDibbles towards their own. |

Polifemus McDibble
Name: Polifemus McDibble Brief Description: Old man usually wearing colourful rags. Likes to keep his appearance rather unkempt. Limps slightly on the left leg. A bit more in depth: You want someone as mad as a hatter and as hard as Stonehenge... you get Polifemus McDibble. Since his younger years he has been an extremely powerful wizard and he has always thought that he was destined for great endeavours. That was why he applied to become an Auror and he always accepted the most dangerous missions available... he would happily have tried to stop Voldemort himself if he ever had the chance. Unfortunately, when You-know-who tried to make his comeback, Polifemus Mcdibble was swamped in a top secret mission in Transylvania and he did not make it back until the dark menace was vanquished again. He retired from aurorship shortly after, a part of him rather disappointed for not having had the chance of crossing wands with the Dark Lord himself (which would probably have implied his death... but polifemus McDibble is not the kind to admit something like that!). Given the fact that, while his career was very successful, he didn't ever do anything "great" in the true sense of the word, he started to look to his family to produce an heir who would finally give the McDibble's name the glory it deserved. As for now, he is having high hopes in his nephew, Andrew. He believes that his family shares a bit of the blood of Herpo the Foul, the greek dark wizard who first tamed a basilisk. He really hopes to see someone as strong as that ancient mage come out of his blood... A note on Polifemus magic skills: Polifemus McDibble can cast wordlessly and wandlessly some very easy spells (usually the list is limited to Lumos, Nox, Wingardium Leviosa, Accio, Aereo Voltere) provided that the targets are not overly powerful or difficult to maneuver. Also, the more Polifemus is familiar with the target, the more he can exercise power over them without having to make incantations. In his own study in the McDibble manor, where he has stayed for almost 50 years, Polifemus can move books around, change the color of the courtains, turn the light on and off, summon tea or whiskey and so on. |
Dedalus McDibble
Clan position: Warmaster Brief Description: Rugged, tall and extremely serious looking man. Deep, calm tone of voice. Slightly nervous attitude as if he was always in tension and on guard. Dresses with taste and somber elegance but it is clear that he is someone grown up on the outdoors. A bit more in depth: Before starting his collaboration with the Ministry of Magic, Dedalus McDibble has been a field researcher on magical creatures and an expert in observation and self defence against some of the most unsavory denizens known in the magic society. Dedalus has traveled a lot around the world during the first years of his life and, actually, at first he was thinking he would have done that forever. Only, during one of his brief visits to Scotland, he met Kreimhild Rickard and fell in love. They married and Dedalus settled down with the rest of the Clan McDibble, taking the position of clan's Warmaster (which simply meant that he was the second strongest combatant of the clan after Polifemus McDibble himself). Wishing to continue his studies about magical creatures he managed to get a job in the appropriate department of the Ministry of Magic and after three years only, his vast experience and ruthless skill earned him the seat of Head of Department. Dedalus is fiercely loyal to his family and his clan. He is one of the few people who managed to win the respect and friendship of Andrew's father, Edward Fidelius Doyle... |
Kreimhild McDibble (nee Rickard)
Clan position: Member Brief Description: Blonde and blue eye woman. Fit body and sinuous cat-like movements. Dresses A bit more in depth: Kreimhild McDibble nee Rickard could be aptly described as a reckless spirit wrapped into a calm and collected countenance. Since she was a little child, her love for adventure was unsurpassed and many have been the cases in his life in which she had put herself into danger in order to investigate something that tickled at her curiosity. When she finally got a job at the ministry in the Magical Catastrophes department, she found herself in her element. Not only she could get to look into uncanny and unusual events through all of Scotland… she could do so with the imprimatur of a law officer and she could also count on the help of several skilled colleagues. Kreimhild wasn’t much interested in career and was contented of being a special agent, and a very good one at that. She met Dedalus McDibble while on a mission to find out the reason for muggle’s restlessness at Inverness, which turned out being caused by Boggart activity. The man stole her heart away and they married the following year. Now, she considers herself a member of the McDibble clan much more than a Rickard, with which she never had very strong ties anyways… she is the wife of the man she loves, who actually has relinquished his life of wanderings for her and she is the proud mother of a strong willed and handsome son. And in addition to that…. she still got to do the job she loved. Kreimhild McDibble nee Rickard is a happy woman. |
Belladonna McDibble
Clan position: Lorekeeper Brief Description: Beautiful woman. Very expressive face. Usually wears black. Talks with a soft, musical voice. Generally polite attitude although if one looks in her eyes, it becomes clear that she is a very driven woman. A bit more in depth: Those who do not know her well enough will probably mistake Belladonna for a much more weak willed woman than she really is. She seems to always bow unquestioningly to the authority of old Polifemus McDibble and unerringly puts her assigned duties in front of her personal desires. In truth, Belladonna McDibble is a much more complex and willful woman and it is her great ambition that gives fuel to her great drive turning it into a sort of inner obsession. Belladonna McDibble is a less sociopath version of Bellatrix Lestrange… with the main difference that she does not serve a single man as her Lord but she rather serves her whole Family. Given her sharp wits and her attractive looks, she had several would be suitors in her younger days and she unerringly refused every single one of them because she didn’t consider them to have done enough in their life, to be worth of her family... Her marriage with Edward Fidelius Doyle was actually arranged by Polifemus McDibble. The most glorious moment her life happened when Polifemus McDibble let slip that he was considering her son, Andrew, as the possible future new leader of the McDibbles. For everything that does not involve directly her particular drive, Belladonna McDibble is a gentle woman and a caring mother. Fact is, she lives to see the day in which she will finally be able to serve her son, the new rightful Head of the Family. |
Edward Fidelius Doyle
Clan position: Member Brief Description: Tall and slightly heavily built man. Dark, slightly brooding countenance. Tends to dress in a rather nondescript manner. Tips of finger slightly burned after one too many incidents during his researches. Talks with a slight Romanian accent. A bit more in depth: Edward Fidelius Doyle has been adopted by Polifemus McDibble during a trip to Romania. He was allegedly orphaned at age 5 after the death of his parents in mysterious circumstances. His name is English because his mother, Zara Lestrange, was english. His father, named Decebal, was a member of an old and well respected pureblood romanian family and it was said that he had a brother who was a powerful and ruthless Dark Wizard. Edward Fidelius Doyle is a very mysterious man. He seems to have one real passion in his life, and it is potion making… he is a researcher in that field and life has been so kind to gift him with the opportunity to dabble into his favored activity without having to worry for anything else. Life, for good measure, has added a beautiful wife and two children… in all honesty this looks like a lot, considered that Edward has not much personal merits in achieving all of that. In fact, his only merit, has been to impress an old Auror with his potion making skills. At least, apparently. Edward Fidelius Doyle loves his family and is fiercely protective of them. He is normally a quiet man but there is a fire that burns deep in his eyes... a fire that shows that, alchemist or not, he is not a man to be trifled with. |
Tysiphon McDibble
Clan Position: Outcast Member Brief Description: A quite tall and rather thin woman. Long flowing black hair usually well groomed, she has the classic countenance of a dark lady. Usually her smile is polluted by a soft sneer. Her voice is musical and bewitching. A bit more in depth: Tysiphon has always been a slightly wrong girl since she was little. The truth of the matter, which nobody in her family is aware of, is that Tysiphon is one of those individuals who feel the irresistible urge to break the things they like. Under this assumption, we could say that she probably likes her cousin Andrew an awful lot… Tysiphon has been a Slytherin and that house’s mindset has found a perfect breeding nest in her devious little brain. She believes that only blood purity deserves the chance to rule over the world and openly despises those who cannot claim as distinguished ancestors as hers. She believes that the McDibbles should claim their rightful place of power in the Wizarding world… important positions at the Ministry of Magic and even at Hogwarts. Being the only one in the family allowed to speak up against her father Polifemus’ will she is also the only one to openly adverse her cousin’s claim to leadership of their blood (although she has more than one secret ally amongst the family ranks). She currently works as a supervisor in the prison of Azkaban and it was there that she earned her nickname of “little Dementor” or “little Demi” in short. They say that she’s not much difference between her and one of the monsters that were used to tend the prison time ago. The fact that she is seen that way, actually pleases her. There has always been a deep antagonism between her and Andrew and more than once he has been the target of her malice. There is a feud between the two… and only time will tell if it will end and how. |
Deimos McDibble
Clan position: Member Personality: Patient – Clever – Intransigent – Proud – Cold Deimos is the oldest McDibble actually enlisted at Hogwarts and is the cousin of Andrew Christopher Doyle. Born and grown up in an intransigent (and slightly dysfunctional) Pureblood family, at first he was antagonistic to Andrew, since he wanted to become the new McDibble family leader. How Andrew made him eventually change his mind is a long story known only to a few… fact is that now Deimos supports his cousin’s claim to family leadership. Deimos has actually been an important active support for Andrew when their uncle Polifemus went “bad” after his wife’s death. Andrew himself has been of help of him although Deimos is not prepared to admit this in public. While they are deeply bonded, they still think the McDibble way, so Deimos never babysits Andrew, leaving him to face issues on his own unless there is real danger. Deimos, has grown up in a pureblood wizard Atmosphere. His father, Dedalus, was a field researcher on magical creatures before starting to work for the Ministry of Magic and so Deimos is much more accustomed to the outdoors than his cousin, and also he is a good hunter/tracker and well trained at dealing with dangers. |
Phobos McDibble
Clan position: Outcast Member Personality: To sum up Phobos McDibble in one word, we could certainly use "self-centered". While he hides his true self behind a well mannered mask and can be extremely charming if needed, the truth is that he is sadly lacking when it comes to empathize with others and his universe revolves basically around himself. He tends to interact basically only with people that interest or amuse him for any reason and his mental attitude, especially in the latter case, is that of the entomologist studying some newly discovered insect. He loves to assess his superiority.. plainly over those he deems weaker and more subtly over those who can be dangerous. His harsh upbringing had taught him the advantage of prudence but this does not mean that he is a coward. On the contrary, he can be quite ruthless and totally devoid of any kind of qualms if the situation calls for it. |
Andrew Christopher Doyle (McDibble)
Clan position: Heir to the leadership Andrew is the firstborn son of notable witch Belladonna McDibble and Edward Fidelius Doyle, an exceptionally gifted potion maker with a mysterious past. There is something to be said about the McDibbles.. an old pureblood Slytherin-oriented family who allegedly did not ally with Voldermort both during his rise and his return, the iron fist leadership of now deceased Briareos McDibble saw that the family remained true to its independency and his brother and current family leader Polifemus is definitely dead set on the same trail. The McDibbles are a difficult family to be born into and Andrew didn’t enjoy an exactly easy childhood in the McDibble manor near the Inverifaigaig village in Scotland. The fact that the boy had been born gifted with a sharp intellect and a stubborn personality didn’t help at all as this seemed to arouse his uncle Polifemus’ interest. For the best part of his own youth, Andrew had been groomed to eventually have a claim on the family’s leadership… and that meant a lot of hardships to be endured. Truth be told, Andrew was not the kind to complain much about hardships as long as them involved studying interesting things like magic. His stubbornness was honed to the point of being steel-sharp since as long as his uncle was concerned, failure was not an option when setting on a task. What actually weighed a lot on Andrew’s life were his family’s attitude on him… he eventually ended up developing extremely controversial relationships with each one of them, with the exception of his little sister Magentia for which he felt only unbridled love and protectiveness. |

Other Clan Denizens
The Owls
The McDibble Clan owns a whole breed of Great Grey Owls all of them related to Scylla, Polifemus McDibble's familiar. Scylla is a mean old bird and all of her offspring is usually rather difficult to deal with. In the recent years, Scylla has given birth to a particularly foul tempered male specimen that has left the sign of his beak over many a McDibble finger during his youth. For some reason, the aggressive birdie and the heir of the McDibble Clan, Andrew Doyle, developed a reciprocal liking and so Ghost ended up eventually becoming Andrew's personal familiar. |
The Cats
Several Scottish Fold cats can be found wandering and snooping around the McDibble Manor at Inverfaigag Village. They aren't exactly owned by the McDibbles (it is debatable to actually consider "owning" a word that can be applied to cat since they are amongst the most independent of animals) with the exception of two of them: a big and rather haughty looking grey male named Duke (Deimos McDibble's Familiar) and a little and sociable kitten named Angel (Magentia Aurora Doyle's familiar). These two cats are the only ones who wander inside the walls of McDibble manor and Angel is the only being in existence allowed to sit on the personal armchair of Polifemus McDibble (other than Polifemus himself obviously). There is a sort of truce between the cats and the McDibble's owls so they almost never attack each other. |
The Cattle
Polifemus McDibble owns three nice specimen of red coated scottish highland cattle. Specifically, a bull named Gus and two cows named Molly and Bess. Curiously, the less approachable beast of the lot isn't the bull who actually is rather friendly, but the cow named Molly who had once butted none other than Dedalus McDibble himself (an event that the current Head of Magical Creatures department at the Ministry tries his best to keep as confidential as possible). Highland Cattle are known as a hardy breed due to the rugged nature of their native Scottish Highlands, with high rainfall and very strong winds. |
