DC: 1945 is a freeform sandbox game set in the DC universe in 1945, shortly after the end of WWII. The game will allow players to write heroes, villains and neutral parties with original twists to fit them into this setting. There will be scope for a wide variety of content however the game is a sandbox and will be heavily player-driven. I will be looking to see players be very proactive with seeking connections and scenes, starting open scenes and trying their best to be active participants. The game will begin in May 1945 with the war having ended in March 1945 in this universe. The game will focus on the newly-established League and Syndicate, the way neutrals try to fit in and the conflict between the groups. Player character - player character conflict will be encouraged but not forced.

This game is recruiting. Please post here to state interest or ask questions and send me CS's via PM.

The Story So Far

Metahumans, in one form or another, had existed for a very long time on earth. Many of them predate humanity itself. For one reason or another, often deliberately, they avoided attention from humanity as a whole. Historically some became known as gods or monsters while others remained largely unknown. Over time they grew more common but also more secretive as humanity grew more numerous and technologically advanced.

While some operated before the advent of the second world war they were small-timers, only just gaining attention and operating at a level that really made an impact. Governments were becoming increasingly aware of these anomalies they were heavily discussing what they might do when 1939 struck and the second world war broke out.

As war raged governments globally began to take far greater notice of metahumans. One of those metahumans was the small-town hero, Clark Kent. When the young man discovered the truth of his Kryptonian origins he skyrocketed to international fame and, despite his youth, he became a hero in the American Army. As Superman he fought in the second world war from 1941 onwards, seeing a great deal of bloodshed that tempered him into much more of a fighter than he had been at the start.

Despite being a soldier Superman had the strength to simply knock foes unconscious with little more than a tap and, despite their crimes, he left his targets to be jailed. Unfortunately despite the variety of metahumans on the side of the allies they had not been attacking long when General Zod, a Kryptonian, and many others crash-landed in Germany. Seeing the Nazi regime as an ideal opportunity to cause mass devastation to humans before their subsequent takeover Zod and many other Kryptonians provided a powerhouse for the Axis forces.

In 1943 Hitler was murdered by Superman, having seen one life too many sacrificed in the war he snapped. Crashing through the secure bunker he snapped his neck before leaving, shattering the morale of the Nazi leadership entirely as they realized that even their Kryptonian allies could not stop the number of metahumans against them. Seeing this as weakness the Kryptonians then took over, leading those still loyal in a war that seemed more hopeless but more destructive by the day.

It took two years to end with Superman taking his second life, killing Zod after a brutal fight when he came to realize that there could be no negotiating with a man who had lost everything. Zod was killed on March 2nd 1945. Japan had already surrendered due to the hero Captain Atom performing a demonstration nuclear detonation many miles from the Japanese coast with orders to detonate major cities if they did not surrender.

Clark returned home not the youth he had been but a veteran suffering from severe P.T.S.D despite his young age. Along with him, countless other metahumans returned to American soil only for new conflict to be born. Naturally, their ideals did not always align and so, soon enough, two groups were born.

"The League", a nationwide alliance of superheroes who sought to uphold the law, to protect humans and to be true to the image of their inspiration, Superman's small-time heroics before he became a soldier. Standing against them was "The Syndicate", metahumans who sought to use their powers for their own gain wealth or influence or, sometimes, for some kind of personal crusade or ideals. The League has no formal leader though many would say Superman is at least symbolically despite taking a back seat recently. The Syndicate is a more underground organization however many accuse Lex Luthor of pulling many of its strings.

The League is backed by the U.S. Government and has jurisdiction across America and in many other nations. They have a headquarters in Metropolis with plans to construct 'The Watchtower', a space station, as the heroes are advancing the space race. Despite their backing, the Government do retain heroes of their own such as Captain Atom and Damage. The League aim to be non-lethal where possible and they focus primarily on higher-level crimes and metahuman crimes.

The Syndicate is a criminal organization. It is suspected that it was begun by Lex Luthor but nobody can tie him to them publicly. The Syndicate is generally focused on gaining wealth and influence. Most of their crimes are robberies, blackmailings and kidnappings. The Syndicate does not attack children, they do not commit senseless crimes and they do not admit members who are a liability.

Rules

  • GM Word: I will try to listen to ideas, explain my reasoning and work with players however I expect that when I state something definitively that is accepted. Please don't argue if I say there is no room to adjust on something.
  • Drama: Do not cause or participate in drama e.g. arguing, bringing up controversial topics, taking jabs at other's writing/characters. If you have an issue talk it out, try to write with other people or inform me.
  • Godmoding: Do not godmode. (Control other characters, assume their actions/reactions, assume the result of an attack.)
  • Activity: Minimum post rate is once per two weeks per character. Any less and that character will be considered inactive. Inform me if you will be delayed.
  • Writing: Write in the third person past tense. A reasonable standard of English is required. (Spellcheck, grammar check, no one liners or overly short posts)
  • Pariticpation: This game is a sandbox and requires players to be proactive in their participation to function. Seek out connections/scenes, write with others, create/respond to open scenes. Be the one starting scenes, PM'ing others and being friendly/sociable.
  • Smut: Accept that this game is not smut-focused and others may not be interested either in general or in your character. Accept it and move on. Do not harass others for romantic or smutty connections. (Or connections in general.) A request is fine but no means no.
  • Content: This game will be placed in extreme. Used content warnings, do not force dark/graphic content on others and do not judge those who enjoy it.
  • Combat: If you engage in a conflict scene with another writer's character be willing to have a back and forth and discuss the scene maturely beforehand. If you cannot come to a resolution the scene may have to be abandoned.
  • Anachronisms: I will not be militant about this but please consciously try to have your character fit into the universe they are in. The game is set in 1945. Don't talk about Twitter, Tesla and twerking. Please be conscious of content, slang and clothing choices as well as the social environment.
  • Bigotry: I will not be allowing Nazi characters in this game however I will be allowing characters with bigoted views as they were far, far more prevalent in 1945. Please be aware this may discourage others from writing with your character and understand that. I will not be allowing any out-of-character bigotry in this game.

Character Creation

This section aims to give some additional information on creating characters. It will be updated with a full character sheet and further information if the interest check is passed. Please make sure you read the setting information, rules, information below and CS in full before asking questions. Try not to make mary-sues or power fantasies and focus on an interesting character.

  • Power Level: Everyone is beneath Superman. Beyond that, it's shades/levels and complicated/circumstantial. Keep power descriptions semi-vague.
  • Canon Events: Do not reference DC canon events if they are not established. This is its own timeline. Don't expect others to necessarily want a canon connection.
  • Character Choice: Please check the taken and barred lists. The available lists are just for ideas. You can pitch another character.
  • Canon Changes: You may adjust a character's first name, gender, ethnicity and make some backstory adaptations within reason.
  • Images/Faceclaims: All characters must use a faceclaim unless their appearance is significantly non-human (e.g. King Shark). All artwork used must be of reasonable quality. If you need help with a faceclaim feel free to ask me.
  • Nazis: Don't make a Nazi or Nazi sympathizer. The only villains who joined the Nazis were Zod and the Phantom Zone Kryptonians, who are dead.
  • Affiliation: Characters will be either League, Syndicate or Neutral. Characters may change sides case-by-case. Some may be too evil to be accepted by the League. Neutral characters may lean more towards one side or the other.

I will be allowing original characters however original characters with powers must keep their power level in line and generally be lower than most canon characters. They must also use a power source that fits with the DC universe. For example, I would allow an original wielder of a lantern ring but will not allow for an entirely new vast power source to be made up.

I will be allowing player characters who are not heroes at all, they will fall under neutrals. Ideas could be a reporter, a therapist, staff who work with the League of the Syndicate or politicians or simply the partners of heroes/villains.

Powers: Powers are things that transcend human possibilities. They include peak human physique and skills that transcend all normal humans for example batman's martial arts prowess qualifies as essentially superhuman. When writing powers please consider whether you view your character as stronger than Superman. If you do you have gone overboard.

Weaknesses: All characters must have at least one weakness but should have more. 'Human vulnerability' is a valid weakness for those without superhuman physiques.

Equipment: Generally covers highly favoured tools or unique equipment. It is assumed all characters have access to military-grade weaponry if/when needed but they may still have favourites and others may have unique weapons like the lasso of truth.)

Sample CS (Superman)

Kal-El
Superman

Basic Information
Name: Kal-El (Clark Kent)
Alias: Superman
Affiliation: League
Occupation: Superhero (On leave)
Age: 24
Gender Identity: Male
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual

Physical Information
Height / Weight: 6'3" / 235lbs
Hair / Eye Colour: Black / Blue
Faceclaim: Henry Cavill
Build: Muscular
Notable Features: Clark is tall and muscular but beyond that, the most noticeable thing about him is how blemish-free his Kryptonian body is. He has no scars, no marks, no blackheads and no real flaws to speak of.

Personality & History

Personality: Clark is a kind-hearted person by nature. Considerate, empathetic and self-sacrificing he always acts with the interests of others at heart even when they truly don't deserve it and he knows it. For much of his life, Clark saw humanity as incredibly admirable and he cherished the time he spent among them even if there was always a slight disconnect. Eventually, though, that snapped. Faced with the horrors of the second world war Clark took it upon himself twice to take a life in an attempt to end the war. The only two lives he ever took, even in war, were those of Hitler and Zod.

While no other blamed him for his choices and many commended him Clark felt sick. He had shattered a line he drew in the sand. For years he told himself that he could not take lives because once he had started he would not know where to stop. Clark didn't want to be a god deciding who had the right to live on earth and who did not. Despite not having taken any other lives and feeling no desire to take more Clark has been deeply troubled ever since.

In public, Clark puts on a brave face and he uses the excuse of helping to organize and build up the League as a focus to explain why he is seen less in public after the end of the war. His flagging mental health is not something he trusts the public to understand and he worries that with each passing day he feels more and more withdrawn from humanity as he leans on metahumans in the League for support.

If Clark truly has a flaw it is his extreme ideals which can sometimes be paralyzing. Clark holds himself to standards well in excess of the vast majority of humans and even heroes. He took two years to decide to kill Hitler and another two to decide to kill Zod. Clark has deep worries over how he is seen by humanity and he truly does value the opinions of even the most ordinary people.

History: Kal-El was born countless lightyears from earth on the planet Krypton. When he was just a baby Krypton was a dying planet, collapsing in on itself as his mother and father opted to desperately send their newborn off-planet in the vague hopes that he find some other, safer planet on which to be raised.

The spaceship landed in Smallville, Kanses. When the rocket was found by Jonathan and Martha Kent they could not believe it but that paled in comparison to what they felt when they found a young human-looking baby within it. As a couple the two had struggled to conceive for years and in a way they viewed young Clark as heaven-sent. They hid away the rocket, adopting the child and raising him as their own.

Over his early life Clark's powers slowly began to awaken. He could pitch a baseball so fast it could split a tree trunk, help his dad mend his old Ford by gripping the bumper and lifting it off the ground and move so swiftly his parents couldn't see him. Clark wasn't stupid and knew he was different, hiding these gifts as his parents called them from the others. Through his youth his parents told him that when he was old enough they would explain and, due to their kindness and love, he trusted that they were making the right choice.

When Clark turned sixteen his father finally showed him what was in his shed. The spaceship, hanging from the roof, had that little harness that had carried him to earth sixteen years ago. Clark was stunned and, rightfully, upset. He knew he was different but to discover he was an alien truly was life-changing in ways he couldn't possibly have expected. Still, despite the emotional turmoil he embraced his pa and told him he knew he needed to wait to tell him. A child couldn't have understood and they couldn't have waited forever.

Clark began to hone his skills in private, learning to control them to the best of his ability. In public he was well-liked as a studious, athletic and friendly person though he of course always downplayed his physicality. When Clark turned eighteen his life was changed again. The ship that had carried him began to emit a loud sound that made him rush to investigate, opening a panel he found a tracking beacon directing him far, far north.

Taking flight on by far the furthest journey he had ever undertaken he eventually set down, unbothered by the arctic winds he traveled until he reached the towering fortress. It was titanic, a structure of ice that jutted out over the landscape and made the young man marvel. As he entered he explored, discovering that the ice had been constructed around technology akin to the ship that carried him. It was here that Clark encountered a hologram of his father, Jor-El. He was told he was a Kryptonian, that his people were gone and that earth was to be his home. He was also told that it was the Kryptonian way to uphold justice no matter what and given his soon-to-be distinctive uniform.

Upon returning to Smallville Clark explained the experience to his parents. While they were worried they told him that they supported him and that if he set out to do good in the world they would stand by him. After humble beginnings as a small-town hero it didn't take long for Clark to see that the second world war was not going to be a background feature of his life. He had to stand up for justice, just as his father had told him his people would want. Clark became the first widely-known superhero in America and then the first internationally-known Superhero.

Clark began fighting in North Africa and Europe on the side of the allies. Given his strength, he could effortlessly knock foes unconscious with impossibly precise strikes. While many of these people were later executed on the battlefield Clark did not take lives himself due to fears of becoming a one-man judge, jury and executioner lording over humanity.

Initially, his presence, along with several other metahumans, shifted the war almost immediately. They began to beat back the Axis powers on all fronts until the untimely arrival of more Kryptonians. More survivors. Zod and other Phantom Zone prisoners. The aliens saw fit to conquer earth but wanted as many metahumans as possible out of the way and so they allied with the Nazis and turned the tide of the war back to a vicious stalemate.

After another year of this new conflict in which there were great losses on both sides at which point Clark made a decision. He was going to break his one rule. Adolf Hitler, a single man, was responsible for so much death and suffering that Clark could not contain himself. He broke into a secure bunker, knocking all others unconscious before killing Hitler with a single punch. Clark left, taking more of a backseat in the war as he saw the struggle deepen he could not bring himself to fight so often after breaking that one rule.

Two years later, though, Clark did break it again. He realized fighting would not end and after seeing Zod fight he knew there was nobody else who could really stand up to him. Recognizing that same fervent, manic desperation for victory that would never see surrender in Zod he took his life, too, snapping his neck and dropping him to the ground before retreating from public life.

Clark put on a brave face but ultimately he barely ever took up the mantle of Superman back in America. When he did it was always in non-combative situations. As the man who had killed both Hitler and Zod he was as good as immune to bad press and no news outlets would ever run a negative story about him. Clark had a heavy hand in creating the League and was saddened to see the Syndicate gain traction. While he serves as a moral compass of sorts, and a set of ideals to aspire to, Clark is far from actively the head of the League. Despite this, he can always be reached by any who might need to speak to a man who truly cares for every other soul on earth.

Traits

Likes: Simple Food, Baseball, Fresh Air, The green flats of Kansas, Manners, Kindness,
Dislikes: Rudeness, Hatred, Murder, Violence, Blood
Skills: Academically Gifted, Remarkable Hand-To-Hand Combatant, Military Maneuvering, Kryptonian Knowledge, Public Speaking, Leadership,
Flaws: Naive, Suffering P.T.S.D, Self-Doubting

Powers, Weaknesses and Equipment

Powers:

  • Kryptonian Physiology: Clark is a Kryptonian and, like all Kryptonians, his physiology is uniquely adapted to absorb the radiation of a yellow sun. When absorbing this radiation his body is extraordinarily superhuman even when compared with most other metahumans. Clark appears to be particularly sensitive to yellow sun radiation, perhaps due to having grown up on earth. Without this radiation Clark is no more powerful than any human. When fuelled by a yellow sun Clark's powers include:

    • Superhuman Strength: Clark is the strongest known metahuman. He has never truly found a physical challenge that tested him. He can tear steel, throw buildings and shatter the earth beneath him with ease. Just with a clap of his hands, he can create seismic shockwaves. Clark never employs his full strength.
    • Superhuman Durability: By all accounts, Clark appears to be indestructible. Save for red sun radiation, kryptonite, magic and the absolute peaks of other metahumans he is impervious to harm.
    • Superhuman Speed, Agility & Reflexes: Clark is capable of moving at extreme superhuman rates comparable to speed force users. He has the agility and reflexes to match. If Clark focuses he perceives the world in slow-motion and can dodge bullets and even most superhumans effortlessly.
    • Superhuman Stamina & Sustenance: Clark does not need to eat, sleep or drink provided he has solar radiation energy. He can function indefinitely under a yellow sun. He does feel better if he rests but he has gone more than two weeks without rest during the peak of the war and could maintain focus to fight.
    • Flight: Clark can fly with no more than a thought, effortlessly accelerating to speeds that defy physics in a moment and travelling the world in minutes.
    • Heat Vision: Clark can project beams of heat from his eyes. They are extraordinarily destructive but he can adjust the heat and area.
    • Super Breath: Clark can exhale with enough force to cause gale-force winds, at arctic temperatures if needs be. He can freeze water in a moment on a large scale.
    • Superhuman Senses: All of Clark's senses are extraordinarily superhuman to the point he can hear everything happening in a city at once. He has to focus to tune out most of the sources of information around him just to stay sane.

Equipment:

  • Kryptonian Suit: This suit is Kryptonian in origin and almost as durable as the man who wears it. Distinctive, it is known around the planet as a symbol of heroism and hope. It can resist almost any form of harm and has never been damaged.
  • Fortress of Solitude: Clark has visited more frequently in the past few months. He has access to a spacecraft in the Arctic filled with a wide array of highly advanced Kryptonian technology that he is gradually trying to understand.

Weaknesses:

  • Kryptonite: This green ore from his home planet had bonded to his ship and broke up during entry to earth. Miniscule fragments rained down around the globe. They are extremely rare. Exposure to kryptonite can sap Clark of his powers in seconds and kill him in hours.
  • Red Sun Radiation: Radiation from a red sun has the opposite effect on Clark when compared with yellow sun radiation. It saps him of his strength and reverts him to being no stronger than a human.
  • Magic: While not truly a weakness it is more that beyond Kryptonite and Red Sun Radiation the only thing that truly seems capable of affecting Clark at all is magic. He is still extremely difficult to harm and even manipulate, capable of breaking spells and resisting mental attacks with incredible ease.

F.A.Q

How Many Characters can I write? You can write as many characters as you like however I will be encouraging that players ensure their characters are balanced between affiliations and power levels. I will also be insisting that any notable canon names taken are above the bare minimum activity expectations. If you cannot meet the post rate (1 per 2 weeks) on all characters I will request that you drop some.

Can I reserve a character/faceclaim? Yes, you can reserve either. Characters and faceclaims can both be reserved for a maximum of two weeks. You may not have more than 3 characters and 3 faceclaims on reserve at a time.

Can I write X barred character? Most are barred for a very good reason. They are too strong, too vast in terms of influence or too cosmic. You can always ask but please be aware I will almost certainly say no.

Who's strongest? Superman is currently the strongest being discovered, in terms of a 1-1 fight. Beyond him, it's something of a free-for-all. There are obvious tiers and bad situations for example killer croc has no feasible way to bring down Supergirl one-on-one even if they are both weaker than Superman. Similarly, Lex Luthor might be able to plot a way to take down nearly anyone but he doesn't want a cage match. Conflict should be thought out and discussed with a loose, but not set in stone, end goal.

Has X big canon event happened? No, it hasn't. There have been no bigger threats to earth than the Nazi Regime and Zod. Nobody knows about people like Darkseid, Brainiac, Mongul, The Anti-Monitor etc.

Who fought on the side of the Nazis? Just Zod and the Kryptonians from the Phantom Zone. Even other villainous characters must have fought on the allied side or they may have not taken part in the second world war at all. I will make an exception for those who were forced to fight due to threats to family or other blackmail but I do not want player characters who genuinely believe in Nazism. (Even villains)

Can I write a hero as a villain or vice-versa? It depends on who. Many characters have changed sides plenty over the years. They need a good reason to have decided to do so and it has to still be believable for that character. Also bear in mind there are often villainous versions of characters already out there as an option.

What will the expected posting rate be? Once per two weeks unless you let me know you have an issue.

Can I write a character who is not in the League or the Syndicate? Yes, you can, these characters are referred to as 'Neutrals'. It is possible for a character to change sides, too.

Will characters from comic lines incorporated to the new 52 be allowed? Yes, provided they fit in terms of tone and power. I don't want too many characters who are too similar however case-by-case I will allow Wildstorm, Milestone, Vertigo and Watchmen characters. (Obviously not ones like Dr. Manhattan.)

Why is X an NPC? I have some kind of plot-related plans with them, one way or another. I picked a few favorites of mine along with ones who are too powerful to really work as PC's in this game. If a character is off limits it is either because I believe I can add something very fun to the game by using them as an NPC or because I feel they would be a significant detriment to the game if made a PC.

Why can't I write a big bad? While this is a sandbox there are several reasons to limit this. For one, most of them are not remotely interested in social situations and many lack the capacity or willingness to change at all. For another, they possess powers that can really mess up a setting in relatively short order. Lastly, there are a fair few writers in this game and so giving everyone a big bad would flood the world with them or make people have to wait years to get their turn.

She definitely suits that 40's aesthetic although someone else mentioned potential interest in her so if they still want her she may be taken.

LOL SO glad you're looking for canon characters, which I know little about. Otherwise, I'd probably jump in on this s well, and then drown.

GL with it!
If one thinks of omniscience as causal rather than predictive- not 'THIS!', but 'If this, then that; infinite matrices of infinite dimensions each- it goes a long way towards reconciliation with Free Will.

It does not, however, make it easier to contemplate or accept a being capable of visualizing such an array.

I was thinking canon--though updated for the period.

I need to put my thinking cap on, but the characters that stood out to me were Donna Troy, Lady Shiva, or Killer Frost.

Those would all work!

I do want to note that the list is definitely not exclusive. I debated trawling countless wikis to try to make something more all-encompassing but I figure if people want a niche person they'll know their name anyway and it's not like I'm going to find and list absolutely everyone.

Maybe Tali al Ghul. She's one of the few canons besides Bats and Supes I really know much about, and her greyscale persona resonates with me.  Already have some ideas about her engagement in the war.

Maybe Cliantha Darnius for an FC:

Her racial BG is abiguous to fit, IMO.

Edit: or Kelly Gale:
If one thinks of omniscience as causal rather than predictive- not 'THIS!', but 'If this, then that; infinite matrices of infinite dimensions each- it goes a long way towards reconciliation with Free Will.

It does not, however, make it easier to contemplate or accept a being capable of visualizing such an array.

Talia would be a lot of fun I think. I could see her going all sorts of ways. I think Cliantha seems like a really good fit for her though they would both work.

Let's call it a thing then.

Not settled on a particular character yet.

Did the United States internment of Japanese Americans still happen in this universe, and, if so, how did Superman and the broader superhero community react?

Very difficult question to answer when I'm really uninformed on that topic, unfortunately. Does it heavily impact the background of a character you are considering either way and if so which way would you prefer that it went?
