Welcome to Prince Academy, a prestigious all boys boarding school located on the upper east coast of the US dedicated to cultivating the inherent gifts, skills and talents of young men from ages 16 through 19. Prince Academy is the oldest school in the world designed specifically to meet the needs of those young males who might be a bit more than meets the eye. With a long tradition of educating progeny from some of the finest families on the globe, the academy has set itself apart as an elite institution responsible for grooming some of the greatest minds in numerous fields. Those who successfully complete the program are guaranteed to hit the ground running as part of a tightly connected network though the secrets of how and why are tightly held.

Prince Academy exists in a world where magic is real. Magic flows around us, filling the empty spaces and simply waiting for those with the proper skill and strength of will to seize it. Not that normal humans would know it. They can't see it or feel it. But there are those born with special gifts. Gifts that make them more powerful (or useful) than their normal counter parts. These are the boys that the Prince Academy looks to pull within its doors. They seek to help mold and shape these young souls until they can properly utilize their gifts and achieve their destinies.

In the world there are many supernatural beings flying beneath the human radar, but for the Prince Academy only concerns itself with three classifications:

Normal - Your average Joes. They come in a variety of flavors and may hold special talents and gifts like athletic prowess or an exceptional ear for music but beyond that they are ultimately not very special.

Sorcerers - Those who can tap into the potential of magic and impose their will. The most powerful can do some truly extraordinary things, however, their magic use comes at a price. Until the age of 18 they are only restricted by their own inherent power, skill, and imagination, however, upon their ascension (turning 18) magic use takes a physical toll on their bodies, sapping their life force with each use. However, there is a way around this particular downside. which brings us to...

Familiars - Those who can see magic, touch it, draw it into themselves, maybe even manipulate it on a very small scale if they are strong, but they cannot wield magic as the true force it is. Their purpose, at least as far as anyone can tell, it to aid the sorcerers by acting as a sort of filter. Through the use of a familiar, a sorcerer's life force is replenished allowing them to use their magic with far less restriction. The greatest sorcerers in history have each had the strength of a trusted familiar to draw upon.

People are genetically predisposed to falling under a certain classification based upon family genetics. Sorcerers bearing sorcerers, familiars bearing familiars, however, the occasional familiar is born to a sorcerer and vice versa. It is also fairly normal for normals to be born to magic wielding families. Magic wielders make up less than 10% of the population, with female magic users--at least the natural sort--being exceedingly rare.


What this game is: A freeform largely sandbox game centered around high school life featuring a with an emphasis on male relationships (m/m) and a dash of the supernatural added for flavor. While this is a sandbox game there will be over arching plots/gamewide events that players can choose to have their characters involved in or not. Sex, Violence, and Drama are all highly encouraged!

About the Academy

Founded in the 17th century, the academy has focuses on educating those of The Brotherhood first and foremost. The Prince Company, a front for a powerful cabal of sorcerers, sponsored the school as a trial ground for promising young blood to join their ranks. To the public at large it is simply a boys boarding school like any other, though seemingly rigorous and holding students to high expectations. As a cover they've always maintained a large number of normal students but The Brotherhood, a fraternal society on campus, inducts those of the blood and supplements their curriculum with additional lessons that will unlock their potential.

The school grounds are heavily warded against both prying eyes and uninvited guests. Visitors are welcomed at scheduled times only. This is for the good of the students as well as the Cabal itself.

The Brotherhood

The Brotherhood is known to the campus at large to be an extremely selective fraternal organization on campus that focuses on the development of it's members. They do enjoy a certain amount of social status on campus but how much privilege is real and how much is simply the perception of the student body is up for debate. They often host gatherings and are in many ways considered the public face of the school as they are often the ones to continue on to prestigious positions and bright futures.

The truth of the matter is that The Brotherhood is open only to identified magic users of great potential. Being a brother guarantees a future within the Cabal and access to power the likes of which many have never known. Though there is always a price.

Those of the Brotherhood are identified publicly by a signet ring that is always worn, and privately by a brand received after initiation. It is open to Sorcerers and Familiars only, though both teachers and staff may be inducted as well as students.

Currently Headmaster Prince is the Brotherhood's faculty advisor.

Magic Use

Magic use can cover a wide range of things, however there are basic principles that govern it's use.

-Magic, like water, follows the path of least resistance which means a strong will and mind are required to master it.

-The law of conservation still applies. Everything has to come from somewhere. For example, things like food and water cannot be created out of thin air, though they can be pulled from elsewhere.

-Messing with things like time, space, death, the soul, etc have grave consequences.

-Magic is neither good nor evil, it is but a tool. It is the will and intent behind that tool that determines what it will do.

Focusing, or Your Familiar and You

The balance of Sorcerer and Familiar is one as old as time. Yet many question the necessity of such a bond. Upon presentation as a Sorcerer, a young man (or more rarely, woman) will be able to command the many supernatural forces of this world. The years between presentation and full ascension are a time of learning, experimentation, and discipline. Here is where a Sorcerer becomes intimately acquainted with their abilities...and often questions why they should need a Familiar at all.

Upon ascension, however, a Sorcerer is often sharply reminded of why a Familiar is so direly needed. Magic is nearly always addictive to preform and this addictive property only grows with age. Furthermore, after ascension each use of unfocused magic will cause physical and mental deterioration for the Sorcerer in question. This deterioration can begin slowly. Tremors, fuzzing of vision after extended magic use, and headaches are the most commonly reported symptoms. At this stage the damage is minor and often reversible. The longer magic is used without the assistance of a Familiar, the worse these effects become. Anywhere between six months to a year after beginning magic usage without a Familiar, Sorcerers begin to experience severely lowered immune systems, rapid mood swings and depression, frequent nosebleeds, and severe migraines. Between three and five years, the Sorcerer will usually begin to suffer from failing organs, loss of vision, and hallucinations. Death usually follows shortly thereafter.

Of course, a Sorcerer may live without a Familiar and still survive. There are those whose discipline is great enough to allow them to engage in the use of magic only infrequently and in small doses. Sorcerers who choose to do so may go on to live full and healthy lives, though ones that are critically disengaged from their magical ability. At the same time, increased frequency of use and scope in magic can lead to an accelerated deterioration.

Into this comes the Familiar. Many might disparage their kind for their inability to truly use magic. Some would argue that they are able to feel magic on a deeper level due to their lack of ability. No matter where one falls however, it is impossible to deny the use of a Familiar. It is easiest to think of a Familiar's powers as being those of a prism to a Sorcerer's sunlight. A Familiar in the presence of a compatible Sorcerer will instinctively begin to draw in the Sorcerer's magic, filtering it and focusing it, before it passes through them to return to the Sorcerer. This magic is, for all intents, "purified" and its negative effects upon the Sorcerer are if not completely erased then at the very least, negligible.

The astute reader would catch a key word within there: "compatible." As in all relationships, compatibility is relative and never assured. Most Sorcerers and Familiars are incompatible. Only through long exposure and experience can either a Familiar or a Sorcerer learn how to pick out a match. Even when a suitable match is found, both Familiar and Sorcerer must work to cement the binding. It is only through familiarity that the true potential of such a pairing might be unlocked. A well matched and maintained pair are capable of nearly anything, as the history books show.

Be warned, however, against attaching oneself too early to a Familiar of only passing compatibility. The longer a Sorcerer and a Familiar work magic together the more their magical frequencies attune to one another. While this allows for the aforementioned increases in power and control, it also means that it can be nearly impossible for the two to separate at a later point in time. It is not uncommon for a "widowed" Sorcerer or Familiar to be unable to work magic with another, even if the other is compatible.

Things to keep in mind

-Within this setting, magic is real but it is not something that is brandished about without care. There are those that would seek to cut down a magic user and though Sorcerers and their linked Familiars tend to be very long lived, they can be killed. Immortality is only wishful thinking.

-Normals in the school may or may not be aware of magic. Being aware of it usually means that your family is linked to the Cabal or a Sorcerer in some way.

-Magic use is addicting, for both a Sorcerer and a Familiar. When you use your abilities the urge to do it more and more builds. That is why it is important for the young to learn control. Within the school, gross misuse of magic is a punishable offense. Don't get on the Headmaster's bad side...

-Not all Sorcerers and Familiars are compatible. The reasons why they may not be are varied but sometimes it just doesn't work out and a Sorcerer is unable to draw magic through a particular Familiar.

-Its been stated before but just to be clear, this is a school setting and while there will be supernatural elements I still want it to be somewhat realistic. Things like inappropriate teacher student relationships should be handled as such, so no skipping down the hall holding hands. Actions have consequences... if you get caught

About: The nephew of Headmaster Prince, Devlin comes from a very disciplined and prestigious background. Much was readily available at his fingertips, it's true, but it was drilled into him from quite early on that just sitting on his ass and taking hand outs was not acceptable, not for a Prince. His parents are fairly strict about the standards they hold their only son to and as a result discretion has always been of the utmost importance for him. Disagreements here and there have led to the occasional incident--though nothing truly scandalizing--but for the most part he goes to great lengths to give off the impression, at least to figures of authority anyway (especially his Uncle), that he is above reproach at all times.

Outwardly, Devlin is a model student, class president, and a star athlete on the basketball team (a shooting guard) who's on top of the world and has only the brightest of futures ahead of him. There are already mentions that he will be groomed to one day take is rightful place at the head of the Prince Corporation but he does not generally entertain such discussions. His true thoughts and feelings are heavily guarded secrets that lie behind the mask everyone expects to see. He's known to be rather cocky since he knows he's got the whole package and is a notorious flirt and player in social situations (mostly because he's not yet met his match). He is generally well liked and admired by those who only see him from afar or those close enough to be in the inner circle, making his influence rather far reaching among his peers.

It's no secret that those on his good side tend to reap the benefits of rolling with someone who is naturally protective, generous (yes, he will foot the bill because he can), charming, and fun loving so long as they know how to keep their mouths shut. Loose lips are one of the quickest ways to get on Devlin's bad side (though there are other ways as well) and those on his bad side best watch out as he has a well hidden nasty streak that has certainly helped to boost him to the top and keep him there. He will go after the things he wants and use whatever means he can to get his way. He does have his own code of honor, but it's not readily advertized so it's best that others not count on it working in their favor.

About: Like all good stories this one begins on a snowy winter night. That particular snowy night was when Freyr Gunvaldsson had an affair with his familiar, one that resulted nine months later in Bjorn Gunvaldsson. Though granted his father's name, he was not granted the full privileges of a Gunvaldsson son and he was informed he never would...unless he proved to be a sorcerer. From a young age Bjorn showed a talent for magic that seemed to assure his eventual ascension. Except that ascension never materialized and he was quite easily labeled as a familiar by the time he was twelve. Coincidentally, that was the same year that his (legitimately sired) half-brother Leif was named a sorcerer.

Only a six months younger than Bjorn, Leif quickly developed something of an obsession with the idea of having Bjorn for his familiar. No one thought to object to this aside from Bjorn. Because, after all, as a familiar he was now useful primarily in the connections he might bring to the family or what uses he might serve within the family. In between dodging his half-brother's attempts at "wooing" and his father's attempts at "discipline", Bjorn began to develop some very bad habits.

All of this stuck with him well into the Prince Academy of Excellence, where he has spent the last three years supposedly in pursuit of catching the eye of some well-connected sorcerer or another. In reality, he's spent most of the time ignoring his swiftly impending and incredibly shitty future via alcohol, meaningless sex, and provoking Headmaster Prince. This is his last year in school and he's been given an ultimatum: find someone suitable to attach himself to, or accept his position as Leif's familiar upon graduation. Perhaps its unsurprising that he now exhibits something of a "live fast, die young" mentality that's likely to have some terrible consequences by the year's end.

Perhaps the only saving grace he's got is the stolen moments. You know, like that time he was found singing to one of the freshmen who'd overextended himself at magic practice, soothing the poor boy back to sleep. Those moments reveal a core that speaks to caring a little too much, loving a little too hard, and hurting a little too long. Supposing someone might be able to find that person beneath the bad boy persona and the apparent death wish, they might find themselves with a brilliant and adoring familiar.

About: As a lower middle-class nobody from a tiny town on the east coast, Gabe was the last person anyone would expect to be a powerful magic user. Gabe would never have expected it of himself, that is if it weren't for all the weirdness. That at least might explain how the community pool suddenly developed a riptide, or how all the fish in the local aquarium fallowed him around during his fifth grade visit, or why he could hold his breath for three minutes.

The scholarship that came in the mail had been a complete surprise. At their wit's end, his parents had jumped at the opportunity, signing the transfer paperwork and sending him off in the middle of his sophomore year.

Gabe doesn't fit in with most of the school. Sure, his classmates are nice enough, but they come from different worlds and everyone knows it. Dating or even finding a familiar didn't seem like much of an option, since everyone else seemed to be so far out of his league.

Powers: If sorcery were a team sport, he'd be picked last. His mastery over magic is rudimentary at best when it comes to most things. The one exception is water, especially salt water. Gabe is an aquakinetic, and any sort of water magic comes easily to him. At this point, he mainly uses this power to call up especially high waves while surfing.

About: Spencer's father was a police officer who was killed in the line of duty when he was involved in a shoot-out at a convenience store robbery.  Spencer was ten years old when his father died, and after that his mother raised him on her own.  They were very close, and they had plenty of money, because his mother was the daughter of a casino owner in Las Vegas.

Spencer loved science from the time he was old enough to use a rock tumbler, and his dad encouraged his pursuits.  They shared a love of comic books, and science-fiction, and his father often took him on various outings to visit places like the observatory, or natural history museum, and even once took him on a tour of the crime lab at the police department.

His passions have only deepened as he's grown older and now he spends a great deal of time reading journals, and conducting his own personal experiments, and dreaming about going into space someday.  His dream is to be allowed to live on a space station for a few years and conduct experiments there.  He is a straight-A student, and has no idea that magic is real.  He's attending Prince now because his grandfather, owner of The Valhalla Casino and Resort Hotel in Las Vegas, had him transferred there.  He assumes it is because the school is more prestigious than his former private school, and thus will open more opportunities for him in the future.

Spencer's grandfather, Thomas Stanton, is a familiar, and he senses his grandson might be one as well.  And that's why he's sending him to Prince.  He wants to see if just being around familiars and sorcerers will make Spencer's powers manifest.  He doesn't want to be too overt about things, because Spencer doesn't know about magic, and his grandfather sees no reason to tell him if he never manifests his powers.
