Makes sense. I am thinking of making my Lion Lesbian. If she has to marry a man then she'll be all "Lay back and think of Rogukan."

What's even more disturbing for that one is a lover so secret the player doesn't even know who it is. A stalker who has fallen for them bad, but can't actually approach them yet.

But if they can't have the object of their desire, no one else will either  >:)

Oooo... Call me masochistic, but I love that idea! :D

I was just brushing up on my 4th Edition L5R source books, and it says that after the wedding reception, a newly married couple separates for a month to contemplate what it means to be married. There goes my passionate wedding night. :-\

Then again, maybe my burly Crab husband spends the whole month guarding the Kaiu Wall, so by the time he gets back he's full of frustration and pent-up lust, ready to take it out on his little Scorpion bride... O:)

ofDelusions: I agree with Pumpkin Seeds. So long as your Lion didn't resist getting married (and presumably having children) for the clan, and is discrete about any extramarital affair, I don't think there will be much fuss over whether her lover is a man or a woman. And who knows, your husband (if your character is married) might like to watch! ;D

Neither actually.  Based on what I have read about the time period, homosexuality was not necessarily frowned upon.  A marriage was about doing one's duty for the family and clan, reproduction.  So long as a samurai performed their duties then they were free to do as they wanted with whomever.  Homosexuality is treated like any other extramarital affair, keep it behind closed doors and don't bring dishonor to anyone.
I think it's more 'Don't See, Don't Tell', for anything from homosexuality, to adultery, to nose picking.  Even if people 'know' about it, and maybe even gossip, they won't really do anything until it's out in the open.  And even then, they'll likely look away to be polite.

Remember that in Rokugan lying is more acceptable than telling the truth in most cases.

All samurai wear masks, but the Scorpion are the only ones who will admit it. ;D

Am I right, fellow Scorpion-lovers? ;)

Well Privacy in Rokugan is very precious and very rare especially since the Buke tend to ignore the lower castes most of the time.

If an action isn't acknowledged, then it never happened.

Public drunkeness is a nice example given in the books. A samurai has that one sake too many and does something stupid, as long as no one pays any attention / admits to seeing it, then the event never 'quite' happened.

Ooo, I think I may have found a location for my innocent Scorpion wife/gruff Crab husband/various intrigue idea! :D Since the wife (I've decided to name her Umeko) would be joining the Crab clan, I figured they would be living within Crab territory, so I was looking around for the closest thing the Crab have to a prosperous city, and I think I've found it: Sunda Mizu Mura, or Clear Water Village!:

http://l5r.wikia.com/wiki/Sunda_Mizu_Mura

It is one of the oldest settlements in Rokugan, as well as one of the largest trading centers of the Empire. Most of the trading is run by the Yasuki Family, so most Crane avoid them, but they do trade with ronin smugglers and non-Yasuki merchants. Though a city, Sunda Mizu Mura continues to call itself a village (mura). It is positioned on the River of Gold, which directly links to the Earthquake Fish Bay, and from there to the ocean. Lots of fresh seafood! And it's home to the oldest Crab dojo, the Sunda Mizu Dojo. I figure there would be a more refined section of the city for the samurai and higher-ups to live in, but there is also a red-light district for you naughty types. Crabs like to party hard, after all! ;)

Anyway, since the Crab and Scorpion clans have formed an alliance based on guarding the Second Festering Pit which opened in Scorpion lands, I figure that many marriages have since happened between them to further cement it. So, hopefully, Umeko won't be the only Scorpion amongst the Crab! :-) It might be a bit lonely for her otherwise.

So, just checking in...

This is 4th edition?

And apparently it's a module? Is there a player's guide for it, and if so is it a 'must-read, you need this'? I have a friend who has nearly all of the L5R stuff but I don't.

4th Edition is the most up to date one. Perhaps the only book you absolutely need is "The Legend of the Five Rings 4th Edition Core Rulebook." Here is a link to it on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Legend-Five-Rings-4th-Edition/dp/1594720525/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=MO1JYIH2J4X6&coliid=I2OG3LV6S5EW3

The 3rd Edition Rulebook looks somewhat similar, but nearly all of the 4th Edition book covers have a black background. Hope this helps! :-)

The rules for Legend of the Five Rings, if they are used at all in this game, are fairly easy and straight forward to be honest.  The system is not a difficult one to grasp, but can be complex to master.

Perhaps a bit random but I thought I'd show my support for the Spider clan in their efforts!
I tried getting into the card game again but lack of time and the funds necessary for a CCG I had to give it up again. Regardless, I was enjoying the new spin they given things and the time jump they had made. They were especially doing interesting things with the Spider clan. Creating new families, introducing Dark Fortunes and, of course, Kanpeki's grand reveal. The only downside I saw to it all was that they don't have the time to address everything that must have happened over the course of 25 years in the fictions they release. So many things occur to all the clans, forcing them to leave out entertaining details such as: "What happened to Omoni?" or "Where is Katsu?" As those were major Spider players before. So I believe their choice to skip so much time is a mixed blessing. It gives them much needed freedom from the hordes of plots they were running simultaneously and adds the Colonies as a new playground.

Regardless, I'm a Spider clanner through and through, so I best go hide now because I'm tainted enough to sprout extra limbs and make all the jade in a mile radius around me light up like christmas trees.

Oh, if any of you don't yet have it, get the "Legend of the Five Rings: Strongholds of the Empire" sourcebook. :D It's awesome, and worth it in my opinion. Lots of in-depth details on popular locations throughout the Empire. :-) It's a must-have if you're a GM. ;D

If I had the time and money, I would have collected all of the fourth edition books by now, but sadly I have neither. I have browsed through the core rulebook and liked what I saw, so I'm not surprised the add-ons retain that level of quality.
I was disappointed to see the Spider Clan as a footnote in the core rulebook, but that was understandable as they only became a major clan at the beginning of the Emperor Edition and the rulebook was released with the intent of not spoiling anything yet.

Ok, I'll start things up again. Since system games tend to slow things down, and L5R can require a fair few rolls, particularly in combat, how would we best handle playing it? Could we work out a system-lite version? There will be times that dice rolls would be needed ... knowledge the characters would have that players wouldn't, spotting things the GM wants them to notice / not notice, and of course fighting itself. If we went entirely freeform, how would we handle those situations?

Well, if we went entirely freeform, we could either have the GM tell us (possibly via PM) how much damage each character suffered, and how much he or she inflicted. Or we could go by an "honor system," in which each character agrees not to "god-mod" during the game, and willingly allows his character to be damaged or or otherwise inconvenienced for the sake of realism. Presumably (hopefully) the party survives whatever challenge they meet, but they don't necessarily win.

These are just my ideas. Anyone have any other suggestions? :-)

That works for fighting, but using the other skills would be more of a problem. In a system game, the GM can prompt players for particular rolls, and provide them with information if they pass. I'm trying to think how that could be handled.

That's true. I hadn't considered skill use. Hmmm... ???
