I find that communication between all players is one of the best things to avoid many pitfalls.  Though luck is certainly an element as well.  Preparation is the other and was one of my frequent pitfalls as a GM here.  You always figure, I have time because its forum but really you need to have the entire adventure at least outlined before starting.  Otherwise people get bored and quit.

Intrigues are also MUCH more difficult (IMHO) to plot out and set up in advance than the typical set of wilderness encounters/dungeon rooms/final showdown in many system games.

Yeah they are.  Mostly all you can do is just setup some detailed main characters, some minor interacting characters, an outline of what is going on and then just set in motion.  Otherwise the game is either too constrained as you have the entire thing already mapped out or too random since you are constantly reacting and coming up with stuff on the fly.  I tend toward the latter error.

This was how I was setting up to run my Winter Court Game, although I would have more than likely have fallen prey to the latter outcome.

I just had an awesome idea for that City of Lies game if it ever gets run (and I get in xD)

An idealistic and bit naive young Akodo bushi who is more shy than normal for a Lion and is going to hate every moment having to solve mysteries in Scorpion city.

Maaaaaaaaaybe? I'd like to hear more about how much system/how much freeform to help keep PbP flowing, and maybe a touch more about time-period (game world seems to change SO MUCH from one era to another and I am no expert...I heard the Hare got eliminated at one point, for instance) and setting elements.

And that's if there's room, I just got here, other people have been in this conversation much longer and probably deserve first dibs.

Btw, does anyone else think that half the fun in creating characters for Lo5r is choosing disadvantages.

Whenever I've run it before, I've run it purely system style. Trying it purely freeform might be worth a go. Characters could still be built as normal, to work out skills and so on, or we could try whipping up some kind of light system to see how it could speed things up.

I'd have to check the exact date, but the City of Lies runs about 20 years or so before the Clan War and second Day of Thunder ... maybe more. I'm pretty sure the Hare are still around then. The Mantis wouldn't exist as a great Clan, they'd still just be their own minor clan at this point.

Either way, I still am intrigued. I dig the selected time period too. Heh, I am a sucker for character creation.

Sure, I'd bring back Tetsu, for such an occasion.

Wow! Lots of posts to catch up with! I'm so glad this thread has really taken off! :D

I'd like to take a crack at City of Lies, but I'll have to create a new character. I don't think my "innocent, submissive Scorpion wife of a burly Crab" would survive long there. ;) She'd be better for a relatively safe city where intrigue rules the day. Hmmm... who should I be?

Character creation is fun, isn't it? :D The best part is fleshing out the character, roleplaying-wise, such as coming up with their past, family, ancestors, beliefs, strengths, weaknesses, secrets, appearance, etc. Admittedly, as one more familiar with the d20 system of gaming, L5R rules can be a little bewildering. ???

I personally would prefer a more free-form style of roleplaying over dice rolls. Have mercy on my poor math skills! ;D

Hairy is that around the time Kyuden Hiruma was still lost to the Shadowlands?

I'm pretty sure the Hiruma lands are lost at that point yes. I'd want to check the timeline to be certain though.

I am thinking of taking the disadvantage "Bad fortune: secret lover" that okay? If we use normal character creation that is.

Hmmn, not sure yet. Though I think its supposed to be an npc. A real dominant yandere would be fun.

What's even more disturbing for that one is a lover so secret the player doesn't even know who it is. A stalker who has fallen for them bad, but can't actually approach them yet.

But if they can't have the object of their desire, no one else will either  >:)

How are gay and lesbian people treated inRokugan anyway?

Is it instant cause for Seppuku or is just kinda frowned on?

Neither actually.  Based on what I have read about the time period, homosexuality was not necessarily frowned upon.  A marriage was about doing one's duty for the family and clan, reproduction.  So long as a samurai performed their duties then they were free to do as they wanted with whomever.  Homosexuality is treated like any other extramarital affair, keep it behind closed doors and don't bring dishonor to anyone.
