Spells

Spells are magical abilities cast by magic using classes. To use spells, a Priest must first pray for an hour, at an appointed time determined by her diety, while a wizard must memorize his spells. It takes a Magician 15 minutes per spell level to memorize a spell, and he can do so only while completely uninterrupted. If a spellcaster is interrupted while preparing to cast spells, the spellcaster must start again from the begining. Magicians can muster the focus to memorize spells for a maximum of 12 hours per day.

Magicians and Mystics must roll to determine what spells they know. Upon gaining a new spell level, the spellcaster may choose a spell from her spell list of the proper level, then roll the chance to know percentage. On a failure, the spellcaster learns a random spell instead. Note the spellcaster's failure to learn the spell. A spellcaster can attempt to learn a spell a maximum of three times, after which he is completely unable to learn the spell unless his intelligence (or charisma, in the case of mystics and enchanters) increases, which gives the spellcaster one additional attempt. If, while learning a random spell, the spellcaster rolls a spell she already knows, the spellcaster develops a particuar talant with that spell, and may apply one of the following effects:

  • Remove the Somatic component of the spell (stilled)
  • Remove the Verbal component of the spell (silent)
  • If the spell takes 1 minute to cast, give it the quick tag (quickened)
  • Alter the spell in stylistic ways, for example, changing Fireball to Iceball
  • Spell resistance against the spell is reduced by 10% (penetrating)
  • Those saving against the spell take a -1 penalty on their saving throws (inescapable)
  • The spell's caster level is increased by 2 (potent)
  • The spell's variable damage is changed to precisely the average in fixed damage. (consistent)
  • The spell affects half again the normal area (expanded)
  • The spell's range is increased by 50%. (long range)

An enhanced spell takes an extra slot against the spellcaster's minimum and maximum spells. A spellcaster may learn a random spell whenever gaining a new spell slot of a particular level, so long as she is not at her maximum number of spells for that spell level. Enhanced spells can also be created through magical research.
