Does Trump's proposal really include the caveat that a "US movie" needs to be shot only in the US? Because if so, it's even more moronic than the idea imposing tariffs on foreign movies itself.

I mean, if that is to be the law, then... goodbye, romantic comedies set in Paris? And action movies involving any kind of international plots?

If I had to guess, based on how he is always trying to harken back to the mythical 'good old days'. Maybe he thinks Hollywood could genuinely go back to the old studio model it used to operate on. Where an entire film was written, shot, edited within a single complex where all sets, proprs and scenes were made up inside giant studio warehouses. 

It's not going to work, but I have to imagine that's the thought process

I still think that's ascribing more complexity to the reasoning than needed. Trump wants something to be true, and he is too narcissistic to mentally process a world where he is wrong about something. He wants movies to be 100% American, so they will be 100% American. Logic and logistics and physics are for lesser peons.

Yeah, that's kind'a the sad thing right now.  I mean, I think the PM handled Trump as well as can be.  The sad thing, is that it's like dealing with a petulant child.  You can't correct him, or tell him he's mistaken, or wrong.  If you do you'll have him have a temper tantrum, and sadly as the Republican party (or arguably the Supreme Court) refuses to anything about him, so you're left at the mercy of whatever he thinks up next.

I always knew the whole Musk/Trump thing would implode--two narcissists of this caliber could not possibly stay friendly over a long term; the egos are just too titanic and too fragile. I'm just a bit surprised how quickly they're managing to feud.
