There is no way that Trump launching his own cryptocurrency isn't exploiting his position as incoming POTUS.  This is a (soon-to-be) sitting President, putting his own face on a coin - even if it is virtual.  Real 'Caesar' vibes going down here.

Day one of the Trump administration, and already they have had lawsuits filed against them regarding Federal Transparency rules (specifically regarding DOGE for breaking rules on disclosure, hiring, and other practices).

I've just see the clip. It's not a classic Nazi salute, but it's uncomfortably reminiscent of one. Which could me one of these things:

  • Elon Musk is just completely disconnected from reality and doesn't realize what his gesture looked like
  • Elon Musk did it deliberately to be "edgy"
  • Elon Musk is secretly admiring the Nazis and he consciously did a "somewhat distinct" Nazi-esque salute to have plausible deniality - while actually meaning it to be the actual Nazi salute

Who knows what goes in this awful man's head...

Elon's Nazi Salute was a variant used by Afrikaaners during Apartheid. So it was an actual Nazi salute, just with a South African accent.

Musk was born in Pretoria.  He knew what he was doing.  He's probably banking on people not remembering that.

Not that calling it a 'Roman salute' is much better - the Roman emperors weren't a particularly democratic lot.

And it’s bullshit anyway, there’s no evidence that the “Roman Salute” actually was Roman. More like it comes from the 19th century and Fascists gave it that back story later to make it feel more official.

A lot of the things Trump did on Day One are upsetting, but I've been eyeballing the healthcare-related stuff in particular.

I can't imagine this one would be popular with anyone, since people on BOTH sides of the aisle were prioritizing making things more affordable, not fucking less.

More importantly, the alt-right perceives the gesture as directed at them in support.  Whether Elon is an absolute idiot who couldn't come up with a hand sign for 'From my heart to yours' that didn't look like a 'Roman salute', or a genius that came up with 'plausible' deniability for the gesture doesn't matter.

He has emboldened these assholes by this action.  He could get shuffled off into some back office somewhere, or even retire to the Seychelles and it wouldn't matter.
