Honua

Honua is a freeform, sandbox game set in a privately owned rehabilitation community on a small island near O'ahu. The game will revolve around an outreach program that uses BDSM to help troubled young people (18-25) learn to build better lives for themselves. The community itself is fully private, providing all residents with a safe environment where they can live, learn, grow, and experiment free of judgement from the outside world; this means openly practicing BDSM. The residents will include charges currently struggling with some life-crisis (these will be submissive characters); mentors, life-coaches, and counsellors who will provide guidance, love, and structure for their charges (these will be dominant characters); and those people who've graduated from the program but are choosing to continue living in the community to help out where they can (these characters will be switches). The kinks involved will vary, but there should be a focus on caretakers, soft dominance, and leadership. DM/Little and Domestic Discipline are strongly encouraged but not required.

Program Application:
What brought you to Honua: I was born and raised on Honua, and I adored this island for my entire life. I had a humble upbringing with two parents who I adored, but great aspirations. Mostly, I wanted to help people. I worked in the field of renewable energy, having always been extremely climate-conscious and growing up in a place with both remarkable natural beauty as well as a great deal of solar, tidal and wind energy that could be harnessed. I developed various sustainable energy generators made to avoid hampering natural beauty as much as possible.

Eventually, my company had contracts all over the world and I took the decision to retire, leaving my business in the hands of my close friend and business partner. From there, I could work on Honua. It took some practice and learning but, over time, I learned how I could best employ my ideas to help others. During this time, I studied psychology and anthropology, earning a doctorate in psychology and publishing papers on various topics related to growth and discipline.

Now, I am overjoyed that Honua has been a remarkable success and I seek to foster that success to the best of my ability including supporting the mentors at Honua in any way I can. I no longer participate quite as heavily, or as personally, as I once did but I do still take part from time to time in my own ways. Overall, I am to be a gentle, guiding hand helping to ensure that Honua remains a safe, healthy environment for anyone and everyone involved.

Describe your ideal dynamic in a fostered BDSM setting: Overall, Kalani has softened over time. She now enjoys fairly casual, but very intimate, sex in which she is a caring, considerate and gentle dominant. She prefers to take a mommy role. It is fairly rare that she is strict with others, nowadays, but she certainly can be. Kalani helped many of the mentors on Honua learn although now she trusts the mentors she has to teach the newer ones.

The Setting:

HONUA: Founded 17 years ago by Kalani Alika, Honua is a small, privately owned outreach program and resort whose goal is to blend BDSM with traditional mentorship in a safe environment, fostering growth, self-improvement, and healing. It's located on a little-known Hawaiian island just a short boat ride from O‘ahu. The founder, a billionaire philanthropist named Kalani Alika, grew up on the island, and it was around her childhood home that she chose to build this dream of hers: a safe place where troubled young people can overcome their demons and learn to thrive beneath the loving guidance of their mentors.

THE PROGRAM: Honua's program is relatively unknown and generally relies on a referral process to be granted acceptance; this is true for both the young people needing guidance and the mentors looking to offer it. However, some few have managed to become residents through a simple application without a referral.

CHARGES: These are the those troubled people whose struggles in life have led them to seek help at Honua; these will be the game's submissive characters. The community rules for them are as follows: First, they must be between 18 and 25 years old. Second, they must accept the authority of the mentors in the community, including but not limited to the ones to whom they are assigned. Third, they must confirm that they understand that this community utilizes BDSM as a tool to help foster growth; no one will be sexually coerced, but they will all be subject to discipline at the discretion of their mentors. Fourth, they must express their commitment to improving their lives in some way; this may including taking classes, registering in college or university, finding a job, pursuing a passion, or some other approved goal. Fifth, criminal behaviour will not be tolerated, and those found committing violent or destructive crimes will be immediately removed from the program.

MENTORS: These are the mentors who want to give something back by providing guidance, leadership, and discipline to their community charges; these will be the game's dominant characters (but can engage in submissive play between each other). Their rules are as follows: First, they must be 25+. Second, they must accept responsibility for their charges and always treat them with patience and respect. Third, while they administer discipline at their discretion, no sexual acts are to be forced upon any members of the community; consent is always required. Fourth, they must provide proof of some kind to demonstrate their competence as mentors. Fifth, they must respect the limits of all charges in the community. Sixth, they agree to help guide their charges toward their goals, offering love, structure, and discipline where they can.

GRADUATES: These are those people who've fulfilled their graduation requirements but don't feel ready to leave Honua. They are permitted to stay, provided they use their own experience and success in the program to help foster growth in the younger charges; these will largely be switch-type characters but can be exclusively dominant or submissive. These people may be anywhere 20+ and must have shown significant improvement in their life during their time in the program.

The Resort:

RESIDENCES: All residents are assigned a home where they may live free of charge as long as they are part of the program. These homes vary in size from 2 bedrooms to 5, depending on the number of residents, and each one is furnished with all the necessities, are equipped with WiFi, and, while not large, provide ample space for privacy. All houses are located on the southeast side of the community where they overlook the beach. They are all built to the same design, though some, as mentioned, are larger than others. Each one is connected by a walking path, which leads toward the main communal area half a kilometre walk from the residences. There are no roads, except the main one leading out of the community, through a locked gate.

THE COMMON AREA: North of the residences, there is a large common building surrounded by two pools, three hot tubs, and a public garden. The building itself houses a lounge, the only place in the community that allows public sex and where alcohol is served (though, charges must obtain permission from their mentors to drink). There's a small library; a 50-seat theatre where movies are played nightly and another 50-seat theatre for plays, music, and other live events. There are rooms where residents can teach or take classes, and another where group therapy sessions are offered weekly. There's a breakfast diner, a couple other restaurants, and a quaint little coffee shop overlooking the beach.

THE ISLAND: Besides Honua, there's a single town populated locals a little further down the beach, about a 10 minute drive away. There's a grocery store there, and a doctor, but besides that there isn't much that Honua doesn't have itself. For those needing a little more, whether that's for a job, some hobby they want to pursue not offered at the resort, or a college/university education, the island of O'ahu and city of Honolulu is only a short boat ride away. Mentors are welcome to leave whenever they wish but charges must obtain permission before leaving the island.

Mentorship Assignment, Graduation Requirements, & General Expectations (IC):

MENTORSHIP ASSIGNMENT: Generally, when a new wave of charges arrives they will all be assigned to one or (more often) two mentors (Please note, this is generally not done by the GMs, though we're happy to help; but we think it's better if players do this on their own). Similarly, each mentor is assigned one or (more often) multiple charges. While all charges are subject to the authority of all mentors, charges (generally, though there are some exceptions) live with and under the direct authority of their assigned mentor(s). This assignment is intended to facilitate a more personalized experience for each charge that will allow them to grow beneath the guidance of someone who knows them intimately and understand their needs, their strengths, and their weaknesses.

Graduates are not assigned to anyone but are generally expected to seek out relationships with new charges, using their own success with and experience in the program to aid these new charges in their journey. Often, graduates live on their own, but they may take up residence with other graduates and, in many cases, continue to live with their old mentor(s), acting as a role-model of sorts for the charges living there with them. Graduates can only discipline charges whose mentors have given permission.

With respect to sexual orientation and other limits, charges may refuse discipline from a mentor. However, that mentor will then be required to bring the charge directly to their mentor(s), who will then deal out the appropriate discipline.

HOUSEHOLD DYNAMICS: Two mentors can live together in the same house without any romantic or sexual involvement. However, neither are they prohibited from doing this. Similarly, the charge-mentor relationships may but need not involve sexual or romantic activity. Charges may also, but need not, be romantically involved with each other and are permitted to experiment with their own D/s dynamic. Graduates have the same freedom to engage in or refrain from relationships as all the others.

The general dynamic of the household is completely up to the members of that household. One may involve a warm, familial dynamic, while another may be more professional, and still a third might be almost casual. It's totally up to the members.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS: Graduation is personalized for each individual charge, and may take anywhere from 1 year up to 7. Requirements for graduation are finalized by the mentor(s) assigned to the charge, though the charge will have some way. Generally, the requirements include three long-term goals, which may include such things as: Obtaining a GED. Graduating from University. Paying off debts. Remaining X-years sober. Goals should not be chosen randomly but instead be personalized to match the needs, dreams, strengths, weaknesses, and other relevant traits of the charge. Besides goal-setting, charges must be free of major infractions within the last 4 months to graduate. Major infractions include all Resort Rules, plus any major infractions as defined by the charge's mentor.

GENERAL EXPECTATIONS: It is expected that all Resort Residents strive to live together in an open, welcoming community free of judgement. Discrimination against any member with respect to race, gender, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, or socioeconomic status will not be tolerated and will generally result in immediately removal from the program for anyone who violates this rule.

While we recognize that mistakes happen and many charges are likely to suffer behavioural problems, destructive or persistent violent behaviour will result in removal from the program, regardless of the individual's role. These behaviours include, but are not necessarily limited to, unwanted physical aggression (i.e. assault), unwanted sexual aggression, arson, destructive vandalism, and other similar behaviours. Basically, behaviour that causes significant harm to Honua's residents or its property will generally lead to expulsion from the program.

Community Rules (IC):

1: Always remember that all residents deserve your respect. Abuse will never be tolerated.

2: The community rules distinguish between two types of discipline: Traditional, which includes non-sexual punishments such as spanking, scolding, loss of privileges, and other similar things. Sexual discipline includes heavier kinks with a more sexual orientation; some examples may include nipple clamps, sexual denial or overstimulation, anal play, and others. Traditional discipline may be given at the discretion of the mentors and without the consent of their charges. Sexual discipline must always involve consent.

3: Most kinks are allowed in public. However, consent is always required for anything sexual. Penetrative and oral sex must be kept private, except in designated areas (e.g. the lounge area).

4: All charges are subject to the authority of all mentors. However, each charge will be assigned one or (more often) two mentors (similarly, each mentor is likely to be assigned multiple charges). These will be like their "family" units while in the program, and they will live together like one. (Please note, the "assignment" of charges to mentors is intended to happen IC; the GMs will not be matching characters together, though we're happy to help with the process).

5: Besides the overall rules of the island, each charge is subject to the specific rules of their mentor(s) and must obey them or be ready to accept the consequences.

6: Extreme kinks are allowed with a few exceptions. These banned activities include: bestiality, dub-con,  non-con, and sexual coercion of any kind. A certain level of sadism & masochism is tolerated, but please recognize that this is a place of healing, while violence (even consensual violence) runs counter to that goal. All permissible extreme kinks must be kept in private areas. Permissible extreme kinks include, but are not necessarily limited to, bloodplay, sadism & masochism, extreme humiliation and/or degradation, bathroom play, and other similar activities.

7: Graduates of the program usually will remain living with or nearby their original mentor but are given more relaxed rules. Additionally, they are expected to help mentor the newer charges still in the program. This may or may not include providing discipline when necessary and other forms of kink when desired.

8: It's a small community, and while drama and disagreements may happen, everyone must make a concerted effort to get along with their neighbours. 

OOC Rules:

1: First and foremost, be respectful of other writers and their characters. This means that if either you or your character are engaging in toxic behaviours, you'll be asked to leave the group. These behaviours include but are not limited to the following: transphobia, homophobia, racism, sexism (both misogyny and misandry), religious discrimination, and any other forms of bigotry not listed here. Basically, if you or your character are making anyone feel unwelcome, then you're not welcome.

2: This is a group game, so please don't join with the intention of writing with one or two other players. The communal interaction is very important.

3: I expect everyone to be active, especially early on. If you join and do not make an IC post within two weeks of the game's launch, your character will be removed from the group. The exception to this will be if you message me to let me know something's up. RL happens. I just need to be able to distinguish who plans to participate but is currently unable from those who've left the game.

4: Depending on how will this game goes, this rule may not be applicable (but I sincerely hope it is!). I plan to do several big IC events throughout the year. I'm not sure how many yet; it'll depend on the amount of players who join. But everyone must participate in at least one of these over the course of the year.

5: All characters must be 18+; all submissive characters must be 18-25; program graduates must be 20+; all mentor characters must be 25+.

6: While this game is somewhat flexible, brutality and/or extreme sadism/masochism will not be tolerated. The focus is on healing D/s, which, while this can include many things, should never involve cruelty or abuse.

7: LGBTQ+ and Poly characters are welcome and encouraged.

8: A bit of IC drama is fine, but it will not be tolerated OOC. This includes IC- and OOC-line blurring, possessiveness, harassment, and general creepy behaviour.

9: There's a heavy focus on character growth, self-improvement, and healing in this game. That means discipline-style D/s will play a prominent role. DM/lg, Domestic Discipline, and other similar forms of kink are strongly encouraged (but not required).

10: There will be a Co-GM helping out with this game, Totoro. Character applications will require approval from both GM's and must be sent to both.

11: While I'm happy to debate things and listen to input, ultimately GM word is final and should be respected.
