It is the early 23rd century. The United Federation of Planets has successfully put an end to the first major war in almost a century against the powerful and ruthless Klingon Empire. The Romulan Star Empire, silent since the Romulan War, have once more begun to stir, and new threats lurk in the dark void of space. Fearful of further conflict in the future, the Federation has tasked its Starfleet with building new and more powerful vessels, in what it calls the "New Fleet Initiative", in the hopes of keeping the Romulans and Klingons at bay. Building off the success of the Constitution class starship, new designs such as the Federation class are under development while older designs are being phased out.

Meanwhile, in the region of space bordering the three major empires is the Triangle, so named for the triangular shape formed by the three borders. Here, smaller empires fight for whatever power they can manage, even as the major powers try to extend their influence further into this rich and potentially strategic region of space. The Klingons, revered as warriors, use their lesser known skills in diplomacy and espionage to channel weapons and spies into the area, while the Romulans are stretched thin and seek to form a barrier of weaker empires. The Federation's own interests lie elsewhere, but are well aware of the situation on Starbase 13, and have asked for more vessels to keep an eye on the situation.

This is the story of the latest vessel to grace the Federation Starfleet, USS Avenger. Completed in 2205 and spending the next several years in testing and shakedown, she has finally finished her trials and is ready to be assigned. The requests for additional coverage of the Triangle from Starbase 13 have resulted in the Avenger being assigned there, and she will spend the next several months in transit to her new duty station. While there, her crew will face the best and worst the Triangle has to offer, from cunning and devious Klingons, to calculating and cautious Romulans, to manipulative and deceitful Orions, and the vast array of strange beings that inhabit this corner of space.

Hi everyone! I'm finally dipping my toes into a game again. I've been trying to get this game off the ground for a while now, so hopefully we can make this happen!

I'm looking for a bunch of eager and ready players who are interested in a fun adventure in a region of space known to be strange and potentially hostile, while dealing with the agents of the two main rivals of the Federation. There's so much going on and it'll be up to you guys to be on the watch for anything that could both benefit and hurt the Federation and yourselves.

This game will take place here on E once we have enough people (I'd prefer at least 4 to start) and will be broken up into handy episodes based on the scene. There's also going to be an official Discord group where you can chat about any issues you have or just OOC, but this is not mandatory.

In order to start, you will need the following:

Once you have the Handbook, I've tried to include everything I think you'll need to play (plus information that is fun for world building). To post a character concept, please include the following info:

First, let me begin by saying that I have never had the privilege of participating in a game where the GM has produced a sixty-four page handbook introducing me to the story lore. That's just damn impressive, and--as a world builder and a GM myself--you have my utmost admiration for that herculean effort! With that bit of kudos out of the way, I would further state that I am very much interested in participating.

I have to warn you that I'm fairly new to the Star Trek universe, and completely new to Star Trek Adventures. I'm a quick learner, but I'll have to ask for everyone's patience as I stumble my way through the dark for a bit. But, hey, at least that means that anyone else who's new to this system or to the lore won't be lonely! ::) They'll have me to be like "what's a Romulan?" with!

Anyway, without further ado, I am applying to play Doctor Khal'vanas, the Avenger's Chief Medical Officer if you'll have him:

Character Name: Khal'vanas, son of Vytal and Amraya
Also Has Answered To: Doc, Khal, Baldy
Character Species: Deltan
Character Gender: Male

Basic Description:
Khal'vanas, like most Deltans, is disarmingly friendly and benevolent. His empathic abilities make it impossible for him to dislike anyone, and his genuine connection to the people around him is what makes it so easy for him to get along with, well, just about everyone. As a doctor, then, his bedside manner is above reproach.

As a Deltan member of Starfleet, he has taken the mandatory oath of celibacy required of all Deltans serving with mixed-species Starfleet crews, and he regularly applies chemical suppressants to mitigate the overwhelming power of his Deltan pheromones. He fully understands that Deltan sexuality is simply too much for the sexually and emotionally immature species of the Federation to really get their heads around. Nevertheless, the sensuality of his culture still leaks through in his interactions with others, and his telepathic ability to feel the emotions of those around him seem to have him always saying the right things at the right times to the right people.

In terms of his appearance, he is completely hairless, except for his eyebrows and his eyelashes. That naked baldness is often the first thing Humans notice about him, and other Deltans for that matter. Beyond that, though, he is, for lack of a better description, beautiful--in the artistic sense of the word, being perfectly symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing in all of his proportions. As a Starfleet medical officer, he wears medical whites, allowing him to stand out clearly among the reds, golds, and blues of the rest of the crew whenever someone is in desperate need of a doctor and can't waste time registering names and faces.

With regards to his hobbies, Khal'vanas is a professed xenophile. He actively takes an interest in other species, their cultures, and their makeup--both physiological and psychological. When he's not people watching or talking to crew about who they are and where they're from, though, he also enjoys games of strategy, tending to his specimens (mostly flora and fauna with medically-useful properties), and reading. He does not really have a favorite food, appearing more content to try a new dish every meal when he's able, but his favorite beverage is literally anything carbonated. Having been introduced to "bubbly" drinks during his time with Starfleet, the novelty of these beverages has not worn off over time. The flavor of the drink appears to be less important than the bubbles.

Intended Rank: Commander
Intended Role: Chief Medical Officer (Medical)

Brief Bio:
Khal'vanas was born on Delta IV some forty years ago. He was raised in a happy home, and he enjoyed a happy childhood. From a very early age, he showed an interest both in space travel and in science, and his mother (who was the biological parent who largely raised him after his father and mother took new lovers--marriage does not exist as a lifelong institution on Delta IV, and most Deltans will have between one and ten "partners" in their lifetimes) eventually encouraged him to get into medicine. "Every ship needs a doctor," she told him, and the logic of that statement stuck.

After his preliminary studies, Khal'vanas went into medical school on his home planet, and eventually was able to get into Starfleet Medical Academy in a city called San Francisco on a planet called Earth. He joined Starfleet proper after his studies on Earth, and eventually reached the rank of Lieutenant Commander serving with honor in medical positions during the Four Year War against the Klingons. During that war, he lost many friends and faced numerous challenges, but also won a commendation from the Federation for developing a cure to a previously unknown alien virus that had threatened to wipe out the crews of his section's armada. Just before joining the crew of the USS Avenger, Khal'vanas took and passed the Bridge Officer's Test, achieving the rank of Commander. Although he does not have any direct command functions on the ship, this does mean he can be placed in command if the situation ever calls for it.

The reason Khal'vanas has signed on for this mission is because he would like to explore the enigmatic Triangle, to learn more of its mysteries, and, maybe, to help avert a new conflict between the great empires of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants.

Athem

I've enjoyed Star Trek from the original series through to Discovery, and I play in Star Trek Online. I also have the Star Trek Adventures rulebook.

Character Name: Koria Del
Character Species: Joined Trill
Character Gender: Female

Basic Description:

Koria is tall, slender, and sleekly muscular, her pale skin decorated by the usual Trill spots. On duty, she avoids make-up and her long dark hair is worn in a simple no-nonsense bun; off-duty, she's more relaxed. Like all Joined Trill, she has that curious air of being young and old at the same time, of being wisely mischievous, with poise and self-control.

She wears the minidress version of the Starfleet uniform, a conscious choice informed by her symbiont memories to appear less threatening (she jokes that she's not a 'red shirt' but a 'red skirt').

Intended Rank: Lieutenant
Intended Role: Chief of Security

Brief Bio:

Born Koria Danan, she grew up in a prosperous farming community on Trill. She was a natural explorer, often getting herself into trouble and then out of it again. While she wasn't literally fearless, she saw fear as something to be conquered.

Joining the Initiate Program was a wrench. She knew that, if she succeeded and was chosen by the Symbiosis Commission to become Joined, she wouldn't be the same person any more. At the same time, the idea of getting access to several hundred years of memories was too alluring. Besides, as she explained to her parents, it probably wouldn't happen, with fewer than 1 in 20 initiates going on to join with a symbiont, but the program offered some of the best training available.

She thought she'd ruined her chances when she injured her knee hiking the Tenaran Ice Cliffs, but she was able to arrange her schedule so that her training was more academic until it healed.

Slightly to her surprise, Koria made it through and was chosen to receive the Del symbiont. On that day, Koria Danan ceased to exist and Koria Del was born, with several lifetimes of memories of Trill of both genders. At first, it was overwhelming, disorientating, but much of Koria's original personality managed to fight its way through and take control. She wasn't the Koria she'd been, but she was still Koria.

Not only did she still want to explore, she needed to get away from her family and current friends: as she'd been warned, the transformation created a bad case of Capgras delusion, with her friends and family seeing her as an imposter that had replaced Koria Danan. Trill had recently joined the Federation, so Koria left her homeworld to join Starfleet. Thanks to her training, she breezed through Starfleet Academy; in unarmed combat training, she was often chosen to teach overconfident students a lesson, as she was a lot tougher than she looked.

She served in the security detail on several ships before being promoted to Chief of Security on the USS Avenger.

Yay we have two awesome characters, I'd love to see a more senior character like a captain or commander before we begin but if no one takes the spot, we'll proceed anyway.

The handbook has a few glaring references to discord which is me forgetting to change those references for this new form game, so my bad. I'll roll those changes in when I complete version 1.2 which should have the species section completed, and then I'll finish out the other major sections for version 1.3 and 1.4.

Once the game gets rolling I'll update the book regularly with new galactic events that occur elsewhere in the universe as you guys proceed. This can range from news and information to new general orders released by the Federation Council. When that happens I'll include a brief sorta news segment in game and notify you guys.

As always feel free to ask questions and provide feedback, I'm here to answer questions and stuff.

If we end up needing a captain--or if we get someone that really wants to play the game, but also really has their heart set on playing the ship's doctor--then I'm happy to give up my medical license to go captain. I'd probably play a human captain if I did so, though. But we'll see if anyone else steps forward for the role first.

Looking forward to writing with you, Achmed! It sounds like you're much savvier than I am when it comes to Star Trek. You and GloomCookie both. ;D I look forward to learning from the masters.

For anyone wondering what the Avenger's mission is, in brief, without having to read the setting book first, I found this concise synopsis of it in GC's book:

QuoteThe Avenger is officially on routine surveys of the
surrounding space looking for local anomalies and
the like. Unofficially however, she is assigned to the
role of patrolling the Triangle and watching for any
Klingon or Romulan activity, though hostility is to be
avoided at all cost.

So exploration and reconnaissance, I suppose!
"Being with you and not being with you is the only way I have to measure time." ― Jorge Luis Borges

GloomCookie

Yeah, the Avenger is technically on a routine surveying mission but that's just the official cover story. In reality, everyone knows what they're really doing.

There are four minor powers in the region, and each is trying to secure the best deal possible for them without getting caught in the crosshairs of the other major powers in the region, so there's a lot of politics and negotiations going on. I'll briefly summarize the positions of the major and minor players for convenience.

The United Federation of Planets has an interest in the region mainly due to Baker's World and the other colonies that have banded together to form the Affiliation of Outer Free Worlds (AOFW), but isn't overly aggressive about it. They maintain patrols of the region and send ships to keep an eye out, but otherwise are very hands off and let the other powers run their own affairs, but they are well aware of Klingon and Romulan desires for this rich and profitable area of space.

The Klingon Empire sees it as their right to conquer the universe and subjugate its peoples, and the Triangle is no different. Holding them back is their recent war with the Federation and a need to consolidate their holdings. However, the Klingon Emperor fully intends to bring the Independent Klingon States back under its heel, and no doubt publicly execute the leaders on Kronos for their rebellion against the Emperor. Their largest trade partners are the Orion Frontier Mercantile Association, who are perfectly willing to trade with anyone who has the money, no matter how bloodthirsty, and many Klingons get hired as mercenaries as well.

The Romulan Star Empire is the weakest major power in the region, but they are not ignorant of the potential. Stretched thin, the Romulans use cunning tricks to make it appear they have more forces in the area than they have, and carefully control their dealings with minor powers to keep information flowing out of the Empire to a minimum. They conduct a lot of trade regardless, especially with the IKS of all groups, but they do quite a bit of business with the other minor powers in the field of agricultural equipment.

The Affiliation of Outer Free Worlds is the largest of the minor powers, with 11 (or 12, but who's counting) worlds in their parliament. Founded by a group of stranded Starfleet personnel during the Romulan War, they returned to found Baker's World, and have been expanding ever since. They are held together by the strong political will of the Baker family, and are closest to the Federation in terms of culture. They also have the strongest military presence in the region (not counting the major powers) with a former Starfleet cruiser in their ranks.

The Independent Klingon States are a renegade group of Klingons who fled the Empire after a failed coup during the Four Years War, with the Klingon Emperor laying a cunning trap and forcing them into exile. While they have four rich planets available, their low population numbers keep them from fully exploiting the riches available to them. Like all Klingons, however, they are not above using slave labor, and even have a group of former Federation scientists who are conducting illegal genetic modifications on captured peoples.

The Orion Frontier Mercantile Association is a group of colonies that were once part of the greater Orion group, but have since broken off to remain neutral during the Four Years War and avoid an invasion from the Klingon Empire. Their worlds are the closest to a criminal haven as one can get, with some worlds said to entertain even the most depraved desires for the right price. They do not openly trade Orion slave women, but it's a poorly guarded secret, and often avoid such dealings near Federation space to avoid interference from Starfleet.

The Mantiev Colonial Association is the most unstable of the governments on this list, with the Mantiev government in a continuous civil war for the past few years. While neither side has used major weapons of mass destruction, they are each being 'advised' by both the Klingons and Romulans, who gleefully sell them weapons to use on each other, allowing each side to test new weapons in actual combat without risking their own people. The Federation is attempting to mediate the dispute, but currently, they remain at war.

I have a character that I played in a one on one game here and was wondering if it might be an option. Basically it was a play from the episode of turnabout intruder where my character (commanding officer type) got swapped with a yeoman. After removed from duty at his (now her) old posting, she has been reassigned to the Avenger.

If there is room for this character, I will submit a more complete character sheet.

GloomCookie

The only potential issue is this game takes place before the Enterprise behind her five year mission. Otherwise I don't have a real issue.

Link?

Also do we have a list of what has been filled and what is open as far as positions?   Another couple of questions I have, is this TOS timeline or Kelvin timeline, and if I read the above right we are talking about after the five year war with the Klingons?

GloomCookie

The link to the Character Builder can be found here:

As far as the open positions, please check the first post of this thread.

This is a modified version of the original TOS timeline though with a slightly altered history so if something doesn't quite match up please don't fret, all of it is detailed in the handbook (linked at the top). And this is after the Four Years War, mostly because the Four Years War needed to happen for the four minor factions and three major factions to be in the positions they're in at the start of play. Again, details in the handbook.

I am in a bit of a slow time and looking to pick up things.  Also I will admit to this game catching my eye more than once.  If no one else has put in for it, I can toss my hat in the ring for Captain.  Human male from the planet Terra, human population.

You are most certainly welcome to! Just put in the info I asked for and you can have it.

Also, in case anyone's curious, I made a sort of career path generator and a link to it is in the handbook. Most of the info in there is for world building only, so don't sweat it too much if you don't read all of it. There's stuff like what starship classes there are, general orders, things like that.

Lieutenant & Lieutenant Commander are Experienced
Commander & Captain are Veterans

Character Name: Decimus Coursel
Character Species: Human
Character Gender: Male

Basic Description: Decimus stands jut shy of two meters tall, and has an athletic physique, as well as a physical look which is reminiscent of his parent's Terran heritage.  His hair is a brown only starting to be interspersed with the "salt and pepper" grey look.  He does have rare shade of violet eyes, again genetic trait inherited from his parents.  There is a presence and charisma about him which made Decimus a natural for the command track at Starfleet, and an approachable professionalism which enabled him to bond with any crew he has served.

Intended Rank: Captain
Intended Role: Commanding Officer from the Command Track, former Conn and Tactical officer

Brief Bio: Decimus Courcel was born to Terran parents, his father the third son to a noble family, and his mother a ship's counselor on board the Federation starship Solenge, one of the first ships commissioned in the new Terran shipyards.  After retiring from Starfleet, Decimus father was appointed the Terran representative to the Federation Council, where they stayed upon Earth and in San Francisco after retirement.  It surprised no one who knew Decimus about his decision to follow in his parents footsteps into a career in Starfleet.  Unlike his mother, his path lead him down the command track where his bold command style earned him top marks for his class.  After graduation, Decimus earned a position on board the Colombia as beta  shift helmsman.

Decimus rapidly rose through the ranks and was the executive officer on board the U.S.S. Lexington and was one of the starships present during the last Klingon push against the Federation in the four year war.  The ship was heavily damaged during the engagement, and with Captain Korolev critically injured, Decimus took command and managed to extract the damaged Lexington from the battle.  His quick actions managed to get the Lexington to a safe rally point where the medical ship, the U.S.S. Nightingale was on station, saving countless members of his crew.  Earning a commendation for heroic bravery, Decimus was promoted to the rank of Captain.  After finishing up a tour at Starfleet Command and War College, Decimus was given his first command, the U.S.S. Avenger

Captain America

Character Name: Johnathan McFadden
Character Species: Vulcan/Human
Character Gender: Male
Basic Description:
Spoiler: Click to Show/Hide

Intended Rank: CDR
Intended Role: XO
Brief Bio:  Lieutenant-Commander McFadden is a product of two worlds and occasionally a study of contradiction. He was born to Starfleet, raised on the Starbase that his Vulcan mother and Human father were stationed on. Despite a thoughtful and reserved nature, he demonstrates an openness to shipmates and subordinates, likely born of his life in a fleet environment. The Lieutenant-Commander demonstrates some of the best aspects of a Vulcan upbringing instilled in him by his mother, and the very Human imagination and intuitiveness of his father, as well as those odd skills apparently acquired growing up in a quasi-military environment.

A fleet officer born and bred, it was only logical that, Mister McFadden would enter Starfleet Academy, where he excelled, receiving top marks. Mister McFadden shows dedication to the Federation's mission of peace and exploration, demonstrating a desire to assist all species and races he encounters and upholding our finest traditions. Our recent war with the Klingon Empire however, once more demonstrated, the ever present duality of his nature.

With research vessel upon which he served severely crippled and finding himself in the position of senior officer the the LCDR McFadden chose to steal the initiative from the enemy instead of, as would have been expected, sounding abandon ship which would likely have resulted in countless civilian and Starfleet personnel being killed either in escape craft or inside of prison camp walls. Mustering all hands, the LCDR used what power the ship could muster to breach the enemy hull and engage in a boarding action who's brutal efficiency was as glorious as it was inspired. Despite seizing the enemy vessel, it was forced into a controlled crash landing.

From this point, I can speak from personal experience, as Mr McFadden managed to lead his ship's compliment into locating my own forces, at which point I absorbed command. I have witnessed him, when forced into conflict, bring a tactical planning and unforgiving force that caused Klingon pause and consider how badly they wished for their afterlife. It is for these reasons, that in addition to my submission on his behalf for the Latinum Star, I also recommend promotion to the rank of Commander and award of his own command, or, the first immediately available executive officer posting, until such time as a vacant Captaincy can be found.
