The World Is Yours

I am inspired by one thing concerning this idea: the video game Scarface: The World Is Yours. To start, this is just gauging intetest.

Premise:Tony Montana dies, losing his world. Would the next generation take it back?

I am switching the old video game plot back to they way the movie ended, but giving it a twist. The spin-off story in the game hangs on a 'What If' scenario: 'What if Tony Montana survives the Mansion Shootout at the end of the film?' It is a fun game but the premise always seemed a bit ridiculous when playing it. Besides, this is more going to play in the spirit of everything important in the film taking place, including Tony's death... but building another story from that while I borrow some ideas from the game a bit.

I was more or less thinking what if Elvira Hancock (Michelle Pfeiffer's character) had a child or two with Tony. If I recall correctly, she leaves Tony as one of the only characters that survive. It has been a while since I have seen the movie in full, however.

Fun fact, a sequel concept called 'Son of Tony' was said to entertain this same idea but it was scrapped due to many reasons.

I wondered that if Elvira got away and had a son, what would would he be like? How did he grow up? What sort of person is he? How much is he like his father in terms of ambition? Is he more educated? Does he have a temper like his father did? How could have Elvira changed after Tony Montana? If any children of theirs discovered that the truth about their origins, what would happen?

Synopsis of the Original Story

(Taken from Wikipedia)

In 1980, Cuban refugee and ex-convict Antonio "Tony" Montana arrives in Miami, Florida, as part of the Mariel boatlift, where he is sent to a refugee camp with his best friends, Manny Ribera, Angel and Chi-Chi. The four are released and given green cards in exchange for murdering a former Cuban general at the request of Miami drug dealer Frank Lopez. They become dishwashers in a diner, but a disgusted Tony proclaims that he is meant for bigger things.

Frank's right-hand man, Omar Suarez, sends the four to purchase cocaine from Colombiandealers, but the deal goes bad. Angel is dismembered with a chainsaw, while Manny and Chi-Chi rescue Tony and kill the Colombians. Suspecting that Omar set them up, Tony and Manny insist on personally delivering the recovered drugs and money to Frank. During their meeting, Tony is attracted to Frank's trophy wife, Elvira Hancock. Frank hires and befriends Tony and Manny. Months later, Tony is reunited with his mother Georgina and younger sister Gina, of whom he is fiercely protective. Disgusted by his life of crime, Georgina throws Tony out. Manny is attracted to Gina, but Tony tells him to stay away from her.

Frank sends Tony and Omar to Cochabambato meet with cocaine kingpin Alejandro Sosa. Tony negotiates a deal without Frank's approval, angering Omar, who leaves to contact Frank. Sosa claims that Omar is a police informant and that Frank is weak; Tony witnesses a beaten Omar hanged from a helicopter. Tony vouches for Frank's organization and Sosa, taking a liking to Tony, agrees to the deal, but not before warning Tony to never betray him.

Back in Miami, Frank is infuriated by Omar's demise and the unauthorized deal struck by Tony. At a nightclub, corrupt detective Mel Bernstein attempts to extort money from Tony in return for police protection and information. Tony angers Frank further by openly pursuing Elvira in the club. Tony spots Gina and her drug dealer boyfriend, Fernando, making out in the men's bathroom while she snorts cocaine. Both of them are beaten. Hitmen attempt to assassinate Tony, but he escapes. Tony, certain that his boss sent both Bernstein and the assassins, confronts Frank, with Manny and Chi-Chi in tow. At gunpoint, Frank confesses to the attempted hit and begs for his life, but he and Bernstein are killed. Tony marries Elvira and becomes the distributor of Sosa's product. He builds a multimillion-dollar empire, living in a vast, heavily guarded estate.

By 1983, however, Tony becomes dissatisfied with his lifestyle and cocaine addiction. His money launderer demands a greater percentage, while Manny resents Tony's growing paranoia and abusive treatment of Elvira. A sting by Federal agents results in Tony being charged with tax evasion, with an inevitable prison sentence. Sosa offers to use his government connections to keep a desperate Tony out of prison, but only if Tony assassinates a journalist intending to expose Sosa about his drug operations. Later, Tony, during a public dinner, accuses Manny of causing his arrest and Elvira of being an infertile junkie, causing Elvira to leave him. He travels to New York City to carry out the assassination with Sosa's henchman, Alberto, who plants a radio-controlled bomb under the journalist's car. However, the journalist is unexpectedly accompanied by his wife and children. Disgusted, Tony kills Alberto before he can detonate the bomb and returns to Miami.

An enraged Sosa calls Tony to promise retribution. Tony, at his mother's behest, tracks down Gina. Tony finds Manny with Gina; in a fit of rage, Tony shoots Manny dead, after which Gina tearfully tells Tony that she and Manny had just got married the day before and wanted to surprise him. A stunned and remorseful Tony returns to his mansion, bringing Gina along, and begins a massive cocaine binge by himself in his office. While Sosa's men begin attacking the mansion, a drugged Gina appears and accuses Tony of wanting her for himself and attempts to kill him, but is slain by one of Sosa's men, who is in turn killed by Tony. With Tony's men all dead and assassins outside, Tony turns a grenade launcher-equipped M16A1 on Sosa's men, mowing down many. Tony is repeatedly shot by the remaining attackers, but continues to taunt them until he is fatally shot from behind by the shotgun-wielding assassin known as The Skull.

His corpse falls into a fountain below, in front of a statue with the inscription "The World is Yours".

If this group happened, it would have to be mindful of some major rules and various things to consider.

For starters, the child rule... and this should go without saying. I don't feel comfortable having scenes like the near-bombing of the journalist in New York. Even if kiddies would be destined to  survive scenes lile that, it is still a very adult situation to put them in. Whether the characters are aware of it or not.

If people bit on this, the contents of this proposed group story would also have very violent moments. There is also the fact that I haven't planned or organized this as much as I would normally, due to this muse still taking shape. I am not very familiar with Cuban or Columbian culture, though due to the concept's circumstances, I wouldn't have to be too familiar. However, if people were interested in helping me better shape this, I certainly wouldn't mind.

While I would like this story to go in some general directions and maybe make a callback or three to the original story, the desire to make something new from this is what remains on the surface. I already have some imagery on what sort of people this next generation could be (Tony & Elvira's sons or daughters, etc.)

Seeing as the characters would be grown up in the states many years later, there would be quite a few challenges, hooks and loose ends to deal with. Characters from the film would have to be addressed in some way in this continuation. I am going to continue putting this together while working on everything else I have going on. But this idea feels like it would require a joint effort to pull off.

For example, characters like Elvira, The Skull, Sosa, Gaspar Gomez, etc all might still be alive in whatever year this would take place. A possible hook might be to kill Elvira early-ish to push the center characters of the story. This could be how they discover who their father was, if she somehow kept that a secret the whole time.

A few ideas I am entertaining look more toward revenge, full circle and a similar fall as Tony in the end of their journey. Perhaps a bit like criminal take at Count of Monte Cristo, they could thrive in pushing coke back in the street, they get the power and the girl... and possibly lose it all due to an appetite for vengeance. The law might even the ones to make a bloody betrayal sweep of them after Tony's old enemies and whatever new ones were mopped up (think like Red Dead Redemption).

As for the type of guy this lead man could be. I don't want him to be too much like Tony. He can be ambitious and have some  similarities to Tony... might say something ironic in the vein of stuff his father said in the past. He might even have one or two that are on the nose if it fits, but he is likely not going to be hamfisted with a bunch of callback 'Tony' lines just to have them. Especially if they are the more iconic ones from the film. These few might be played with a bit, instead (Rather than 'Say hello to my little friend!', instead he might say something like 'Hello, my little friend').

Of course, being set in a later time, this story idea would yield plenty of opportunities for original characters.

Twisted Crow

Heh. Just realized that this can't quite work in the way I presented. For one reason, Elvira was infertile. She could adopt, which would change things from the "reluctant genetic successor" angle to invest more on vengeance and irony. In a way, that actually might be even better than what I had drawn up.

Otherwise, Elvira's infertility would have to be retconned for the purpose of this continuation.

So, there would be pros and cons to do this either way.

Ron Don Volante

Elvira could have lied to Tony about being infertile. She did hate him by the end after all. Either way I am interested.

Nice! And that is worth considering. I appreciate the suggestion and interest!

Here's a thought...

Tony's empire crumbled leaving a big hole in the Miami cocaine scene. Lot's of gangs moving and shaking to fill the void with their product and their pockets with dollars. This is a story about a group coming up and trying to snatch that brass ring. Thing is about a crew, they could be a crew of anything. Black, White, Latino, Asian, European, whatever.

Oh by the way interested

Twisted Crow

That is close to something I want to incorperate to include other cultures in this something like this day and age. South America, Europe, Japan, Korea, etc.

I would still want this to center around Montana's offspring. I particularly have a general rise and fall for the son. But any other new 'factions' would naturally have a framework set up.

Doomblade403xxx

What if it it wasn't a child? What if Tony had another sibling. A brother or sister that came in off the boat later.

Norsegod1839

I'll throw my own interest in as well! I like the idea of this and I always loved that old game Scarface The World Is Yours.

You could always retcon her being infertile... or make him an illegitimate son or daughter to.

Twisted Crow

I kind of like the idea Ron Don put out, that she could have lied about it. Or retcon it if that seems like a stretch.

The sibling idea wouldn't quite work with what I have in mind. It would be too easy to connect him with Tony when compared to the bastard child motif. Especially given how a son and/or daughter would Americanize them. The thought of Elvira somehow raising a kid or two, scratching her way through rehab  and never talk about "Daddy Montana" opens up a lot for new characters. And kind of gives her some pathos.

I suppose Tony could have had a sibling come later on to talk to/mentor his kid(s) after being grown up (and after the Montana Mansion craziness long died down). But I am stuck on the idea of the "heir(s)" being American born, for various reasons. It'd be something different and more layered than just "Scarface 2".

Elvira would likely die to tie everything up for a hook.

Twisted Crow

What would really crack me up is if people actually picked up some faceclaims that are named in the intro vid linked above (Vida Guerra, Jason Mewes, James Woods, etc.). That's be both amusing, yet... kinda badass. XD

The only Issue I have is part of the charm of scarface is that the movie was 80s when cocaine was king. If we do a kid then its like late 90s or 2000 at the earliest when the price of cocaine has dropped and people have other ways to get high. Then it's not scarface anymore...its some loosely related thing to scarface.

Twisted Crow

It was a remake of the 1932 film, which served as a basis for 1983 Scarface.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scarface_(1932_film)

The setting and era was completely different from what most recognize as Scarface. The spirit of this is to do something a little different with it. Mixing the formula of these and throwing a modern spin while forming a bridge to the 1983 classic.

Part of the reason why I named it "The World is Yours" as opposed to Scarface was exactly this. And entertaining a what if, ergo the time divergence idea.

Twisted Crow

The theme in both, what makes "Scarface" what it is is precisely this, in my opinion:

Quote

...

Camonte's apartment looks out on a neon, flashing sign that says "The World Is Yours". This sign represents the modern American city as a place of opportunity and individualism. As attractive as the slogan is, the message is impossible, yet Tony doesn't understand this. The view from his apartment represents the rise of the gangster. When Camonte is killed in the street outside his building, the camera pans up to show the billboard, representative of the societal paradox of the existence of opportunity yet the inability to achieve it. According to Robert Warshow, the ending scene represents how the world is not ours, but not his either. The death of the gangster momentarily releases us from the idea of the concept of success and the need to succeed. In regards to the theme of excess, the sign is a metaphor for the dividing desires created by modernity seen through the lens of the excessive desires of the gangster persona.

...

It is true that cocaine dropped since the 80s, but the original used alcohol. And the drugs/substance was never what was really important. It was the rise and fall of the overly-ambitious criminal, and the damage it often caused to others around him as a result. It is likely that the criminal elements in this story would have to adapt a bit and expand. As I almost want this to be a little more literal while still keeping the past poetic motifs. What I want to center on most is that very theme around both Scarface films: 'The World Is Yours.'

Doomblade403xxx

My plan for a character was to play one of the muses of Manny Ribera. She thought she was his one and only and then she finds out manny was killed and that he secretly married Gina. What set my character apart from his other girls was this girl gets her hands dirty. She has been his wheelman, shot people for him, and helped pull down a score or two herself. She earned a little street cred and the idea that Manny died and crews are parting up he and Tony's business enrages her to no end. She doesn't want to be the top dog in the operation but she definitely wants to support someone who was allied with montana.

{The way Manny died it was probably assumed he was killed in the sweep by Sosa's people. It's likely to never be known Tony actually killed Manny over Gina}

That was my idea anyway

Norsegod1839

I'll be waiting to see what the idea is and how it shakes up before figuring out what my character is per say, but I think one of the new comers trying to get into making serious dough would be my thoughts.

Twisted Crow

A reason why I want it set Post-9/11 is it seems like it would be an ideal time for criminal elements to thrive in a next gen Scarface-themed world. The failed 'Son of Tony' movie idea seemed like it could have had similar ideas.

I want to see this guy appear to take the world by the throat with drug trafficking (think El Sueno in Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands) and carry an influence and sense of grandeur comparable to Light Yagami (Death Note) in a way. This would be another house of cards example in the classic "rise-and-fall" theme shared with the Scarface films. The World Is Yours would be more prevailent of a theme in this, but still ultimately untenable in the end.

I think what would make this such a hard sell is that this story would have a definitive ending at some point. At least, for the 'Son', anyway. What remains of Sosa, Gaspar, The Skull, etc. would be mopped up... leaving one last pin on the aisle to knock down.

Another reason I don't want to do 80s (as much as I love its dazzling veneer) is all of the homework that would come with it for everyone. This thing was an 80s thing, but not that. Not to mention, it can even be due to the decline and competition in drugs that enables this new crew to rise as a contender for old man Sosa and company. After Tony's death... Sosa pretty much has complete control unless the other drug fiefdoms decided to get stupid. In the video game, this is what happened essentially... but that is sort of why I want to do something more 'fresh'.

Doomblade403xxx

That case I'll just play a member of the crew with no real connection to the past. I am thinking along the lines of hot female felon decent at most things but a born wheelman.

GnothiSeauton

Sounds like it could be really interesting and fun to be a part of.

Seeking New Stories

Twisted Crow

Characters I would prefer to take the wheel on:

-Tony Montana, mostly just an opening with his death at the mansion. Aside from being the bridge, it helps create context for people that somehow might not be familar with Scarface. Funny thing being that this knowledge won't be all that essential for most people, anyway.
-Vincent (the son), mentioned in my linked WB timeline concept.
-Sosa
-The Skull (for his scene in Montana's death and for a later scene to close up his fate).
-Some cops and minor characters as needed here and there.

Anyone wanting to play Elvira would probably want to make a long-term character as well. I want her to be the trigger for Vincent and Julia.

As for Julia, Vincent's sister... she is kinda open. One could run her to support Vincent or play her similarly as Gina was to Tony.

After Elvira dies, Vincent will kind of need a mentor to nudge him toward his true origins. This could be his "Manny", in fact. Maybe not do everything like Manny did,  but he could if people wanted to. All he would need to be is Vincent's "right-hand man" like Manny was to Tony.

More potential character options here: Regions I plan to expand Vincent's inherited "World" are Asia, Europe, South America (obviously), and several others. So, I wouldn't mind stuff like Yakuza, Triads and... (whatever Korea might have), liasons for Europe, Russia and other places could fit, too. Granted, it would take time for them to arrive on the scene for Vincent. Defectors from Sosa, Gaspar and others could work too, if convincing enough. Police, DEA and such affiliations are also going to be prominent, I imagine. They might do some "movie cop" things, but in the end I imagine they are going to want to use Vincent when he shows up to take things over. So, cop and gov't affilated characters are allowed, too. But that will also take some organizing to straighten out how they want to ultimately deal with this mess. For a while, they won't seem to be doing much except cleaning any messes these warring drug lords make.

Doomblade403xxx

Twisted Crow

Thanks, heh. Knew they had to have something or word for them at least. I guess I can officially open character applications. Gonna need to form a simple character sheet while I still hunt for my Vincent faceclaim in my spare time.

Doomblade403xxx

As an aside would Vincent be more apt to do just coke because that's what his daddy did, or would you think he would branch out into other drugs as well. Like say Methamphetimine.

Twisted Crow

I am entertaining Vincent eventually using downers and numb-ers over time. His beginning will probably just be alcohol, from ehat I have prepped for his beginning. Which even that is kinda dark, he probably goes for coke and other stuff a little later. I am not completely decided on how his addictions will build, just yet.

Doomblade403xxx

What i mean is the supplying and sale of these drugs. Tony made a fortune on cocaine. Now it seems to me a drug empire could branch out into several drugs turning a multi million dollar empire into a BILLION dollar empire. I ask because i was rethinking the idea and maybe branching the character out instead of a driver to a meth manufacturer.

Twisted Crow

Ah, for that, then yes. I imagine he would expand from just coke. What I have written in my little history log is that coke use increases with various events taking place. That still wouldn't be enough to oust other drugs, it would be more profitable to stretch some wings.
