Tumblr Hurting After Adult Content Ban

In news that might warm the cockles of some users' hearts, if in a bittersweet way, Tumblr's decision to ban adult content outright instead of finding any other solution to their problems has contributed to up to a 30% reduction in overall visits since. I would expect things won't turn around and the media site's days are numbered.

That's pretty much the sort of thing that always happens when you try and fix a solution by punishing everyone instead of those that are actually at fault. People who post illegal content isn't going to stop because tumblr's policies made it illegal too. If the law isn't enough of a deterrent, a tumblr ban isn't either. Porn bots arne't going to stop either - why would they? Once again, the punishment isn't an incentive to stop doing it.

The punishment only targets and punishes people who weren't part of the problem.

It's the same flaw that's in YouTube's approach to copyright protection - a system that benefits claimants and is ripe for exploitation, with virtually no repercussions for the people actively exploiting it, while not punishing those who upload copyrighted content in any meaningful way, but instead harming all legitimate creators by leaving them open to attacks and strikes.

As has already been stated, they were warned. Apparently they didn't know who their audience was.

Good. Enjoy being the new MySpace. I have no sympathy for them. You make a disastrous decision everyone tells you is a bad decision and then you stick with it even after seeing proof that is a disastrous decision.

How am I suppose to feel bad about that?

What makes me  angry is  how avoidable this all  is. All they have to do  to save the website is repeal the ban but they won't. Which makes even less sense  when  you realize they put the ban in place thinking it would save the website.


That's laughable stupidity. You want to talk about cutting of your own nose to spite your face? That's Tumblr in a nutshell right now.

I did have an 'a-ha' moment as to how a tea cozy could trigger a really dumb algorithm.

Dome shapes (to cover the teapot) with smaller dome shapes on top (to fit the lid's handle) = Boobies.

It's a disappointment. Tumblr had become my go-to porn aggregator, and I'd met some interesting people via it. But hey, Nature will Find a Way and all that.

From the article, it says PornHub is interested. I think gatekeeping the kiddie porn and other illegal stuff may prove to be too difficult and work-intensive, but it seems like there's still a place for Tumblr in the world.

But, yay to Yahoo for buying them in the first place with no clue how to use them and then Verizon for buying Yahoo with no clue how to use them.
