AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW SHIT! That's right, we're going to the Old Republic baby! We'll be using the Fantasy Flight Games books for this round of Star Wars awesomeness but we're setting it in the wonderful version of the setting popularized by Knights of the Old Republic-with a few differences. Don't expect to run into Revan, for instance. Also don't expect much of the canon of the MMO, because I've never played it.

This is just an interest check for now, but who wants to play in a setting with so many Jedi and Sith that they sell lightsabers at Wal-Mart, a setting of wise-cracking assassination droids, a galaxy full of heroes and villains?

I'm also considering allowing classes that aren't Force sensitive, I feel like things are balanced enough to allow it (and the setting I've picked does allow for melee weapons to go up against lightsabers...). Players won't start as full Jedi, obviously, and lightsabers will be somewhat hard to come by despite what I said, if only because I want to preserve some of their mystique. Age of Rebellion stuff might be hard to do, but I think I can still swing it (the Republic still has soldiers, after all).

So, who's in? Plenty are in! But there's always room for more.

Deadline for character creation, as people are having trouble for getting books (Talk to Pumpkin Seeds she is wonderful), is Saturday, October 28th.

The party will begin on the moon of Nar Shaddaa in Hutt Space, where a supernova has recently destroyed the major trade route the Republic enjoyed to the moon. As such, the place has quickly turned from legitimate business hub to seedy, crime ridden, and easy to get lost in. The Sith gather resources to create an academy of their own on the planet, and heroism is not rewarded in these empires of crime. Will the party manage to overcome the obstacles set before them, or fall to the darkness like so many others? I don't know, but if you're going to be making a character give 'em a reason to be there!

Yes please.

I need to hunt down the books, as I don't know the system (I'm familiar with the old West End d6 system, and the Wizards d20 system), but I love all things Star Wars, especially Old Republic.

Urbanzorro

Actually, does anyone know of a cheap place to find them? I'd be interested as well, just don't have them XD

Which books would you recommend?  the FFG website mentions most are 'beginner' books?

The definite books we are most likely going to use are:

Force and Destiny (Force Sensitives)
Edge of the Empire (Smugglers and Outlaws)

Potentially used:

Age of Rebellion (Soldiers, meant to represent Rebel Alliance but could easily be doctored)

Are there other books? I'm guessing there's probably some sort of "Armory" type book, we players do love our guns.

EDIT: Blackstone, I know you are, we were buddies in that game we were just in!

I will admit to a certain fondness for FFG's take on Star Wars! I will say... you might be overestimating the balance between Force users and the others depending on your tone you're aiming for. The main issue is that a Force user from Force & Destiny takes a LOT of experience before it starts to feel like a Jedi Knight. However, that save amount of XP on the other non-Force users makes them into utter murder machines.

At least, that is the consensus back when I was looking around.

...that aside, what sort of themes are you looking for in this game in terms of the more lewd inclinations? Or is this to be a standard game with potential for lewd?
Ons and Offs

Always free for a little teasing back and forth. Or suggestions to titles to make this exhibitionist squirm! I adore silly little PMs.

Angie

Standard game, potential for lewd.

Strange how the balance goes, it's usually the Jedi outclassing everyone else! But I do think they very intentionally went for gimping early Sensitives due to the problems a well kitted Force User can create. I just feel like if there's a system that can avert the "All Jedi or No Jedi" problem, it would be this one.

I'm working on some books right now.  Does that mean we should pick in advance, all jedi or none?

Angie

On further thought (I do this a lot, for people who've never played with me, I say something then I think about it) I think I am going to require players to be Force Sensitive. This doesn't mean you can't take classes from outside Force and Destiny, just that you have to have at least one "Career Path" that gives you a Force Rating (which are all in F&D). Why? Because like I said, damn there were a lot of Jedi and Sith back then! Plus it means I can do more stuff.

I may or may not already be planning a Jedi character who advocates for this tactic.

"Shoot them in the back! Sith ain't gonna give you a fair fight, why the hell should you give them one?"

I'm waiting for all my books to finish percolating (ask me no questions...), but I have an idea for someone who probably won't be a major force user, BUT will benefit from a little bit.

I do want to try that Defender and Droid Tech combo.

Cataclysmic Archangel

From what I've looked at very briefly, I'm thinking of something of a 'face' character.  I haven't decided between a Trader and a Smuggler... Smuggler makes the most sense.  of course, that's because all I've looked at so far is Edge of Empire.  I know NOTHING of what I'm reading... yet.

Mix in some Force levels for mind tricks and reading and metal stuff, to make some sort of super-silver-tongue behind a pretty face.

Angie

Feel free to ask me any questions about the system. Having played it, I at least have some idea what I'm doing.

Cool.

1.  How do you play? :)

(seriously, I found a LOT of the books last night, I just need to get around to start reading them.  This week is the last week of a class and I have to bust my ass on a SQL database code, but I should have the next few weeks to teach myself how it works)

It all comes down to the special dice. Every roll is basically the same:

1: You figure out your Skill and Attribute. Let's say Jolee Bindo wants to swing his Lightsaber at someone. He has a Brawn of 4 and a Lightsaber skill of 3.

2: Take a number of Ability dice (represented in the book by Green d8s) equal to the higher of the two numbers. In this case, Jolee has 4 Ability dice.

3: Exchange a number of those Ability dice for Proficiency Dice (represented by Yellow d12s) equal to the smaller number. In this case, Jolee swaps 3 Ability Dice for Proficiency.

4: The GM tells you how many Difficulty dice (represented by purple d8s) to roll, and whether or not you have any Boost Dice (blue d6s), Setback Dice (black d6s), or Challenge Dice (red d12s). In this case, Jolee is making a Melee attack which always gives you two difficulty dice, and in this case, his opponent is defending, which gives Jolee one of those setback dice as well.

5: Roll ALL the dice together and tally up the symbols. Each symbol means a different thing, but in the end, you want more Success symbols (they look like little explosions) then Failure symbols (they look like downward pointing triangles). Jolee rolls and gets 4 successes, one advantage, one failure, and three threat. Failures and Successes cancel each other out, as do Advantage and threat, so the final tally is 3 successes and 2 threat. In this case, Jolee lands a massive blow, but those threats mean that something bad also happens to Jolee-in this case, the GM says his old body isn't as flexible as it used to be and he overextends, giving his opponent a free Boost die on his next attack check.

We're kinda doing it slap-dash with Elliquiy's Dicebot, there is a conversion table in Chapter 1 of each book I think. I'm looking at Force and Destiny right now. It'll make more sense once you've read through, but the important thing is figure out which dice are good and which are bad, and which symbols are good and which are bad.

Ooh. I’m also interested if there’s still space. I’m a huge sucker for FFG Star Wars.

Cataclysmic Archangel

Black squares, triangles... Any purple horsehoes or red balloons?

I play X-Wing... FFG loves their shapes, don't they?

This character will probably NOT be combat heavy, but lots of social roll-offs.
