@Clio   A quick question about the universe:  Is age the determining factor in a vampires power level and/or is there an age one should avoid?   I ask as I have a concept for a vampire that was turned around 1794, but I was thinking of him as being middling to lower power wise.

Yes, older vampires tend to be more powerful. If they were turned around 1794, they’d be decently powerful, but you could still say they’re middling if you want. You don’t need to avoid any age as long as it’s after 1050 CE. Unless you have a plot reason that you want them to be weaker, in which case we could figure out something out.

And @Flower, yay! Noted!

May I reserve Renan Pacheco please? And then maybe Sean O'Donnell if there is any need for blood dolls? Still thinking on that one or if I do make one, making the character female.

Vincent Decker-Hybrid W.I.P
Name: Vincent Decker
Species: Hybrid
Age | Age Appearance: 130 Born September 7, 1895  | looks late 20's
Job | Specialty: Photographer currently (has been a soldier and private investigator through the years)
Sexual Preference: Hetero
Face Claim: Jay Ryan

Personality: Vincent is a fairly calm and stoic individual. The discipline he grew up with has helped him deal with becoming a hybrid...well that and nearly a century of practice. He speaks with modern slang and jargon but has a very old fashioned sense of honour and manners, minus the sexism. He can of course become very intense and looks you in the eyes when he speaks.

Flaws: Plays his cards very close to his chest. Not a fan of bullies. Believes in chivalry.

History: His grandfather Zacharia was the only survivor of his pack's massacre. He was young at the time and severely traumatized. The way he remembers it was that 'monsters' killed his kin--his mind withdrew from the fact that he was a werewolf by birth and believed it a curse. He grew up training to fight them. Got married and passed down the misinformation to his sons and daughter. The Decker's had a long line of military history and all his children joined the Army. They trained as hunters--vampires, werewolves...whatever was out there that seemed ungodly.

Vincent was born into this. It was like a cult in many ways. His family was fairly well off by the time he was born, being very successful cotton farmers. It didn't exactly feel like he was well to do or rich. His life after seven years old was similar to training for the army...and schooling and chores. His mother refused to raise someone without some culture and his father had a rivalry going on with Vincent's uncles about whose kids would make the better hunters.

It was grueling and not exactly fun, but it was the life he knew. When he turned 18 he joined the Army. The first world war was happening and he joined the 1st Infantry Division as a Second Lieutenant. He fought and served until the war ended. He was rapidly promoted due to expansion of the army, a great deal of death and the fact he had been training his whole life.

Who would have thought his world would have come crashing down when he got home and was celebrating? It was 1919, he had finally stopped waking up stifling his own screams and his mother was talking about introducing him to some ladies of standing. Like a good soldier, he agreed and made an honest effort to find a suitable mate. He was out one night with a beautiful lady, Victoria Goldring when he caught the eye of Klaus. Not because he did anything to his future sire, but because a rather drunk and somewhat vulgar man made a comment about wanting to fondle Victoria.

Out of the seven women his mother had introduced him to, he actually liked Victoria and was having a good time drawing her into conversation that went beyond art and pleasantries. He tried to be a gentleman about demanding an apology but Jake Stuller III wasn't having any of it. He had some fancy amulet and threatened he was a witch who was going to burn Vincent alive. To be honest, he did begin to feel himself heating up from the inside like a volcano. Then, the training kicked in. Instead of fear, a punch to the throat and stealing his amulet took the wind out of Jake's spell. Grabbing his hair and ears and bringing Jakes head down to Vincent's rising knee broke his nose and knocked him out. A few men had to pull Vincent away before the head stomping commenced.

Klaus saw this and was impressed. Not many people dealt with a witch other than showing fear if they actually believed it. Within a week he had been turned. Klaus and his family soon had to leave New Orleans and Vincent found himself alone. He couldn't go back to his family, they would try and kill him. So he left New Orleans, then America. With all the death in his life, this was the first time he actually was free to discover himself.

One of his army buddies who was far more business minded and connected than he was suggested he invest in some up and coming companies. Eastman Kodak and National Geographic. His father was a board member in the magazine and even helped him get a job taking pictures around the world. For over a hundred years he's been traveling, taking pictures, spent a few decades as a private eye when he wanted to hone his investigative skills and looking to build a decent understanding of the other supernaturals out there. He wasn't like other vampires.

When he heard about the last of his family line passing away he returned to New Orleans. He changed his name a few dozen times but had always maintained an identity that was Vincent Decker or at least a descendant of himself. He didn't want any kind of inheritance, he had plenty of his own money from the stocks he bought in Kodak, National Geographic and the Coca-Cola company. He had missed home though.

Other Info: Investigation, Army, Photography

Connections: None yet but is opening an art gallery for his own pictures and local artists

Rowan Alexander Esteves

Name: Rowan Alexander Esteves
Species: Witch
Age | Age Appearance: 28
Job | Specialty: Barista at Cafe De la Jolla | Aspiring Photographer | Musician
Sexual Preference: Men
Face Claim: Rowan Noel

Personality: Playful | Relaxed | Passionate | Impulsive | Emotional | Intuitive | Charming | Captivating | Clever | Finicky | Impatient | Dramatic | Empath | Hung

History: Rowan doesn’t remember his parents, although his Grandma said he looked exactly like his mother. His father was never mentioned at all, and when he would ask, Grams would just give a shrug and move the conversation forward. Grams immigrated to the US from Brazil just after her daughter was born in the mid 1970s.  Grams had lovely stories about Rowan’s mom when she was young, and she would tell him that he got all the good parts of her. Honestly, he wouldn’t know if Grams was telling the truth or not - he never met the woman. It didn’t matter, though, because his Grandmother was amazing and raised him with more love than someone could ever ask for. She was the hippie lady that everyone rumored was actually a witch (which she was), and she taught him what it meant to be a good man. There was no one better to teach him about life and magic.

It was a devastating loss when she died just after he turned twenty. The only thing that helped was the ragtag group of misfits that lived at The Cabaret with him, which was now his to run and take care of as well as a theater below. One thing that Rowan had always been good at was fostering the types of relationships to keep the Cabaret a safe haven for those who lived there and taking on the place was second nature to him. He wasn’t as good at fostering healthy romantic relationships for himself. Always one to somehow pick the exact wrong guy and then fall in love with him really fast. That left Rowan in a long-term physically abusive relationship with a powerful witch who would use magic in the abuse as well. If it hadn’t been for a great friend, he would probably still be with that man. Rowan now avoids anything long-term and instead makes questionable choices in his flings. The witch currently puts a lot of his energy into various interests and running the communal living space and theater that had been part of his inheritance (along with a rather large amount of money).

The Cabaret is a living space that has been passed down through their family for hundreds of years. It is above a theater named The Talisman, that is still functioning, but rarely used. Sometimes it will be used for local theater productions, a venue, or even for supernatural meetings.

Rowan had helped run The Cabaret since he was old enough to run through the halls doing odd jobs, and it was no surprise that the business and supernatural haven had been left to him along with most everything else that his Grams had acquired through her long life. It has been known throughout the years to be a space where people of all different supernatural species could live and be safe. It's a neutral zone, and anyone disturbing that will have hell to pay. Not to mention it's spelled up the wazoo and those who live there tend to be very protective of it and the little family they have created together.

The rooms are rented, but Rowan is known for taking in those who are on the run, or need protection, whether they can pay or not. The witch himself lives in one of the rooms in The Cabaret. (More info on the Cabaret in ‘Other Info’)

Rowan also does photography as a growing passion and takes music gigs so that he doesn’t lose his love for it. Grams had always enjoyed listening to his music and those memories would never fade. He would make sure of it.

Other Info: Rowan is particularly attuned to emotional/empathy powers. He struggles with full telepathy, but can read/feel/manipulate emotions to some extent. Of course, I will speak with other writers before I write that Rowan can feel their emotions.

Rowan has a love for cars (particularly older ones) and owns a handful of them he drives around.

Rowan owns The Talisman (Theater) and
The Cabaret
The Cabaret is a communal living space located above an old theater in the French Quarter called The Talisman. The Cabaret has been passed down through the Esteves Witches, tracing back as far as the 1800s. The Talisman used to be run by a prominent witch gentleman. It used to get bigger shows, but the larger productions slowly started to dwindle and so he began to just rent it out to local theater groups or as a venue... and when he passed away with no one to give the theater to, he chose to leave it to Grams and became part of the Esteves inheritance.

The tradition continues on through Rowan Esteves, who inherited it after his Grams passed away, but he had been living and helping her run the place before her passing.

There is a private entrance in the back that is kept locked and leads you to an elevator that lets out into the foyer of The Cabaret. It has eight rooms total.  The rent is decently priced for the city and includes internet, utilities, and communal supplies. There are three sets of rooms that are paired off and share both a bathroom and a balcony. One of these is inhabited by Rowan himself.  A recent addition placed a room on the main floor that used to be a den. It has its own bathroom, but lacks a balcony and doesn't drown out the noise from the house well. There is rooftop access that has a heated pool and a greenhouse room that Rowan used to stay in, but he felt like he wasn’t as accessible to the tenants.

The theater below is still functioning as a venue and presents various smaller shows for an inexpensive price.
(communal living space)

Connections:
Raul Cervantes - Rowan works at his coffee shop. They also have an arrangement between the bakery and the Cabaret, Raul will give jobs to those who move in or seek refuge at the Cabaret and are needing a safe place to work that is supernatural friendly or looking for second chances and are struggling to find work elsewhere.

Ons & Offs: Rowan likes sex. It makes him feel worth something. He’d probably try a lot of things. He enjoys something soft and sensual but also a bit more rough and passionate. Nothing too sadistic or violent as he has trauma around that.

My character has been approved.

For those looking to join and seeking connections, I added a section on potential plots that I'm opening.

Francisco Castillo
Species: Vampire
Age | Age Appearance: 500
Job | Specialty: Patriarch of House Castillo, Writer, Philanthropist
Sexual Preference: Heterosexual
Face Claim: Oscar Isaac

Personality: Francisco has lived a long life and found peace with the way he lives. His thirst for knowledge and innovation keeps him interested in seeing what is in store for humanity. Still, he remains concerned, as he sometimes believes they are overdue a wake-up call.

Due to his long life, he tends to lose himself in siring a new vampire, obscure subjects or topics, or spend a decade writing a book he never intends to publish. His time in New Orleans dates back to the first Mardi Gras, the topic of his newest book series.

Vindictive, Obsessive, Patient, Charismatic, Diplomatic, Kind, Scholar, Writer, Philanthropic

History:
Francisco appeared in the records as a young conquistador serving the Spanish during the age of sail. Loyal to the Crown, as expected from her sailors, sailed to colonize the new world. He sailed the Americas and even circumnavigated the Cape of Good Hope. Francis kept records of those early journeys in a journal and published the memoirs under a pen name over 400 years after the events, which provided accurate and raw historical insight from a young man who pursued knowledge over gold. His rise in fame garnered the attention of a proprietress with a heavy purse, who enlisted him for other purposes and a mission.

Francisco Castillo stepped aside and faded from existence, only to surface a decade later as a privateer sailing under a banner of the Scarlet Corsair (Red Queen). The second book detailed a life of sea warfare and the raw truth of the merciless reality of over-romanticized settings. The book series portrayed life at sea and the transition from a nighttime raider to the governor of a small Caribbean colony. Fans of the books speculate that the narrative is the work of a single author, while others even believe it is the first piece of literature published by a vampire.

The Red Queen tells the story of a cursed woman cast from the heavens and forced to endure an eternal life as a human. The series is a "hypothetical" different view from the history books, rife with controversy due to its anti-religion rhetoric. The stories of a privateer and the Red Queen detail a romance that evolves into an eternal bond, culminating in the tragic death of the protagonist.

No more books followed, but Francisco continued to keep records of his arrival in the Americas long before the English landed on its shores. His wealth was compounded from his holdings of land when silly papers spoke volumes. The profits from his life's work support the supernatural community, which finds itself in a modernizing world where it is becoming increasingly complex to stay hidden.

Other Info:
  • Does not sire often and is rumored to be extremely difficult to convince.
  • Supports various causes financially as an angel donor
  • Stays out of the public eye but frequents the same establishments, preferring not to draw attention.
Connections:
Open to discuss any of the following or more
Sired connections (IC:2-3). Gaps approximately 25-30 years or so.
