The Jeju Insurrection of April 3rd, 1948 earned the place the nickname ‘The Island of the Dead’ for a short time during the war, now forgotten as it’s become a popular vacation and tourist destination.

Seven years ago, The End of Summer premiered to rave reviews and great ratings in South Korea, even spawning some western imitation.  It is a mix of old and new reality TV where it features every day life filmed 24/7 but also random challenges and road trips to spice things up.  But each year brought diminishing returns that were growing exponentially, leaving the flagship production dragging the company down.  It’s seventh season was in jeopardy even, few in the South Korean entertainment industry looking to foot the bill, until potential help came from unexpected guest.

A joint production was proposed with rights sold to Netflix for international airing and a guest list of up and coming influencers, from around the world, and some flagging ones, to spice things up.  And to spice things up, they secured one of the biggest YouTubers, Jamerson Lee, to join for the first week before having a complete blow out, totally scripted, with the crew and get thrown out.  The first week of footage has been edited together for the first episode and released even as the interior live cameras start feeding the house going-ons to the internet.  The big show is just getting started.

It is Monday, August 28th as the crew arrives from their nearby hotel rooms, shuttled in in small groups, joining the small graveyard production members to relieve them.  Things have been a bit chaotic as everyone tries to get into a rhythm, with some strange happenings going on on the island.  Jeju Island is the resort of choice for the wealthy Koreans to stay and the lower rung in society to simply visit, an oasis away from the mainland.  And then, air raid sirens blare out even as emergency messages scroll across the TV and play on radios.  A North Korean plane has entered South Korean air space and is headed right for Jeju Island.  Is this the attack most South Koreans have feared for years, or is this something much worse?

Classified: Top Secret

Communique from Dr. Ryu Chong-song to Kim Jong Un.

Respected Comrade General Secretary I wish to start my address to you with a simple query.  What is both the strongest and weakest element on the modern battlefield?  A simple look over statistic would bring the answer, it is the soldiers themselves.  When a tank or armored personnel carrier is disabled, it can be taken back and repaired or parts reused in another vehicle.   Everything but the most high tech items are reusable in our war against the indulgent west.  But a solider is shot or caught in an explosion, you have months of rehab ahead.  Killed and you’ve just lost all of your training investment in that soldier.

I believe myself and my team have figured out a way to solve this nagging problem and keep our devout soldiers continuing to fight.  One can only invest so much into protective and offensive equipment before the returns start to diminish but this method will continue to repay the party and the country for years to come.  We have concluded our partition selection among the volunteers and have implemented the first testing of the serum, I hope to have intriguing results for you shortly.

(Intelligence note:  Not long after we intercepted this communication and translated it, a flurry of activity was seen at the secure medical testing facility on site.  A cargo plane has been called for and is being loaded based on our last satellite pass but we are waiting for direction on any appropriate response.)

It is a quiet August day as the morning crew relives the small skeleton crew maintaining the camera feeds and doing editing for the various media.  They have not even done a talent call yet for the days events when sirens blare across the island drawing the crew’s attention who runs out.  A few influencers perhaps are already up or are roused awake by the blaring noise and the sudden whine of turbine engines. It is the second week of shooting, a first episode has been put out on with social media feed back coming out over the weekend, perhaps you are not happy with how things were edited?  A big influencer was brought in as a guest but it was totally scripted that he’d have a blow out with one of the members, a former Japanese idol and now Instagram model, before they were voted off the show, creating a bit bang for the first episode.

You would be playing the crew and cast of influencers of this reality show as a zombie outbreak takes place on this picturesque South Korean Island.  Most of the crew are Korean or other SE Asians who speak Korean while the Influencers are from all over the world with a prevalent representation from the US and Europe.  I could even see a personal assistant to Malcolm Winslow coming from the US being around as well.  While it’s ok to model a character on an influencer, please no one for one direct playing Mr. Beast or Logan Paul, and face claims should all be real life face claims.

I’m envisioning each game day being two weeks in game with a week or so of leniency, especially for scenes that don’t involve a large group and don’t affect moving the outbreak storyline along.  I also want to include a Flashback thread for people to play past scenes of their characters, both the prior week at the house and ones from before then.

This is just an interest check but looking to find out what you may be interested in playing, a crew member/staff or an influencer.  If an Influencer, what you may be thinking of/leaning towards as far as what they do so we can have a good variety and people don’t feel their idea is getting crowded.

Korean Show Producer

Name: Choi Sang-hwa (Don Yoo)
Age: 52
Sexuality: Straight
Relationship Status: Married & in an affair
Ethnicity: South Korean
Occupation: Director & Producer (Former Actor)

Height:5’10”
Weight: 199lbs
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Dark Brown
Distinguishing Features:
Face Claim: Ma Dong Seok

Personality: Proud | Demanding | Brash | Confident | Shrewd | Spiteful | Hot-Tempered

History:

Coming from parents in the business, Sang-hwa started his acting career early on doing a number of South Korean shows as a child.  He never had the it factor or the handsome face that would get him picked to be a headliner or a boy band member but he learned early on a hard working attitude and diligence paid off.  Becoming a reliable young actor, he got cocky which did not win him many friends among his colleagues, many who were more amateur in their careers.  Disappearing for a few years for schooling, he reemerged back into the industry to take on supporting roles as thugs and crime bosses, even the occasionally cop.  He was rarely the lead or hero and instead made a career out of being the villain or the hero’s support in action flicks and dramas.

As he’s moved up in years, he found himself being forced to move into more behind the scenes capacity.  His attitude over the years had not won him any friends so getting things started was not easy much less anyone willing to work with him as a director.  But as a producer, he started to get things rolling for a few years but after a few bad investments and some missed shots on the production front, he is struggling of late so even getting this new reality show off the ground, even with the tourist bureau on board, had not been easy until he got overseas investment.

American/Netflix Show Producer

Name: Malcolm Winslow
Age: 37
Sexuality: Bisexual
Relationship Status: Divorced
Ethnicity: American
Occupation: Producer, former talent

Height: 6’2”
Weight: 179lbs
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Brown
Distinguishing Features: A surgical scar on his shoulder and extensive tribal tattoos.
Face Claim: Marshun Cooper

Personality: Aggressive | Focused | Confident | Impetuous | Determined | Spiteful | Selfish

History: Malcolm started his entertainment career doing survival videos on YouTube before he got picked up on cable to do even more extreme content.  He played himself off as a former Army Ranger who’d end up having to be discharged due to an injury sustained in the line of duty, though he was always very vague about it in interviews.  Controversy boiled over when stolen valor advocates began to protest and cast doubt on his authenticity and clouded any further success in front of the camera.  Seeing the writing on the wall, he began to watch his money and move towards producing multiple reality and documentary television programs.  He created his own production company and began to see some good success already knowing how to run things and most people didn’t bother checking the production credits.

Seeing the trending of South Korean and Japanese reality shows in the last few years, Malcolm has been looking for ways to expand his productions, looking for partnerships.  He only recently found a South Korean producer in need of some money to get an ambitious idea going for a faltering reality show.  With his money and ideas, they revamped it to include a more international cast of influencers.

Interesting premise, but I have to ask: how big is this island?  Most zombie stories I’ve seen set it up as effectively impossible to deal with all the zombies; even if you clear an entire town, more will just shamble in from other areas.

Jeju island is a real place and a fairly big island.  1,833.2 km in total.

Possibly, one of the questions that the group will have to make eventually is do they stay on the island or do they try to make for the mainland as well.

AndyZ

I didn’t realize it was a real place.  Well, I don’t feel stupid for asking…

There is never a stupid question!

But anyways..

-plants a flag!- I usually am not into this kind of setting, but I came up with an idea that I can't resist. =3= I'm thinking to go for an influencer who is a commentator and make docs of recent events and tragedies with detailed information and even interviews. I also figured she does game streaming for fun too, but that is not her main gig.

Thinking to make her a mixed race. Half Korean, half something.. I will decide later on.

Oh, interesting.  Commentary channels are always interesting and diverse so could see the show being a good way to stand out and get more eyes on it to grow it since always a good competition in that field.  And the mixed race thing could be interesting for the American producer silly enough to think it would be bridging gaps with the productions.

Oh no, not Jeju Island. Are Beru and his ant army going to show up? (Bit of Solo Leveling humor).

I'd definitely be down to make a soldier though with Kim Woo-bin as a FC.

Oh ho! Hello, me dude. Long time no see us both in a group game!

-offers a high five!- >3> Hey hey. Maybe your dude could be a veteran, doing security for the premise? Or would you imagine your guy maybe as an influencer, maybe reacting to action movies and giving critique about the combat sequences?

Ello, Ello, Ello. It has been quite an age, ay? And funny enough, my plan was to make him an ex-soldier who had done enough work in the private sector that he was asked to handle security lol.

<-< Also, after shit hits the fan, my girl will be looking at your guy and be like, "You and me.. We are going to be the best of friends. Right? Riiiighht?!"

Also, since we are going for faceclaims, I'm gonna go ahead and reserve Eyes Rodgers. She be a cute pretty face! Gonna make my girl Korean and Carribean descent.. Wooot.

Hahahaha, it seems your girl is a pretty smart cookie. Hyun-Shik has let's just say, been around the block when it comes to shooting at things and making them stop moving forever. Several years special forces and just as long doing contract work.

Head of Security

Name: Nam Hyun-Shik
Age: 34
Sexuality: Straight
Relationship Status: Single
Ethnicity: South Korean
Occupation: Private Contractor (Retired Korean Special Forces Captain[707th Special Mission Group] )

Height:6'2
Weight: 220lbs
Hair Color: Brown
Eye Color: Black
Distinguishing Features: Movie Star good looks, a 707th tattoo across his right pectoral and shoulder. Several scars from shrapnel on the left side of his torso and hip.
Face Claim: Kim Woo-Bin

Personality: Natural Leader| Laid Back | Tactical | Confident | Charismatic | Stoic | Cool Under Pressure

History:
Hyun-Shik had a relatively normal upbringing all things considered. His parents were fairly wealthy as his father was a video game company CEO, and his mother was a singer-turned-model, but the money didn't change much for his family. Growing up, he did great in school, but as he got older, he fell into delinquency(AKA he fought a lot) because of a few bad choices and not-so-good classmates going after him because of his grades or his good looks. Despite the setbacks, he had enough skill on the football pitch to possibly go pro and even had a few TV appearances because of his mom's connections, but once he turned eighteen, he decided to get his mandatory military service out of the way as soon as possible. As it turns out, he absolutely loved the Army, and after his twenty-one months, he stayed on as a full-time soldier.

His natural talent and aptitude quickly saw him rise through the ranks, and in just two years he was approached to enter the "Black Berets", a blanket term for the Republic of Korea Army's Special Forces. He accepted the offer and underwent specialized training, where he was singled out and given his choice of deployment. He chose the 707th Special Mission Group which specialized in counter-terrorism and intelligence gathering. His time with the 707th was the best and most exciting time of his life, and he loved every minute of it.

After running dozens of successful missions over the course of five years, he was promoted to the rank of Daewi(Captain), and had plans of being a lifer. However, a scandal rocked his dad's game company and he was essentially thrown under the bus despite having nothing to do with it, and his mom had stopped working years ago to raise his triplet siblings after a surprise pregnancy. His family was in dire need of financial help, so he began looking for work in the private sector since the pay was so much better than the military. After his official retirement from the 707th, Hyun-Shik started doing contract work. With a resume as padded as his, it was easy to find employment.

In the years since he has been involved with several PMCs, done off-the-books wet work, and worked as security for dignitaries, celebrities, and even powerful political figures. His job pays the bills, but he is almost never home now and misses his family dearly. Most recently, a friend of his contacted him about a cushy, well-paying gig on Jeju Island that he couldn't accept because he was on active deployment. All he had to do was head up security for a reality TV show called "The End of Summer", which ironically he used to watch all the time. It was essentially free money...or so he was told. He took the job without hesitation and is looking forward to a relaxing stay on Jeju...aside from the diva influencers he assumes he'll be dealing with.

Notes: Don't let his doe eyes and princely looks fool you. Hyun-Shik's confirmed kills number in the dozens, and those are the ones he can officially claim. He is a professional and will not hesitate to put his foot in someone's ass or even worse, put them down if he has to.

I'm definitely interested! You're combining two of my favorite things; Reality TV Rp and Apocalypse Rp! <3

I'd love to play an Influencer, someone who is only expecting that this experience will earn them more followers and a wider internet following. It's all about the clicks and views! It would be really interesting to take them on the arc of thinking about a social media presence, to realizing that this ordeal is actually a matter of life and death. The perfect way to be forced to 'touch grass' and understand what's really important in life.

I would need to think about which FC to use, but I would prefer to make up a unique social media presence, rather than use the likeness of an already famous YouTuber, if that works. I am leaning towards a streamer of some sort, or someone who is trying to make it in the beauty industry.

D'awwww.. >3> You flatter me, me dude. -bumps shoulders!- But once the recruitment thread gets set up and I work on my sheet, we should totally set up some connections. I can imagine my girl being intrigued by your guy, just by his background. Then again, she's such a social butterfly anyways and would chat up anybody.

Oh hooo, maybe a beauty guru? Could be an Instagrammer who transform herself into different characters and what not by the power of make-up and costume designing, etc. That would be very cool! Or could be someone who's into fashion.

But also haaaai, Mel! <3 So good to see you! Omg, it had been so long, right?!

Oh, interesting concept.  And yeah as I stated in the original post I don't want anyone trying to RP Mr. Beast or such, so avoiding the likeness of a famous YTer or Twitch streamer is probably best so people don't get confused.  But the concept definitely seems an interesting one and I figure the early days will probably feel... unreal or try to carry on, doing tweets and live streams to their audience.

Thanks Timeless for pointing out the soldier thing as the initial people should be cast and crew, though perhaps down the line others can be brought in depending on where things go.  But concept sounds good, though I mean most South Korean men will be ex-soldiers since there is mandatory military service.  :D

Well I'm hoping flattery will get me somewhere lol.  But seriously it's always fun writing with with you. And I'm sure Hyun will be intrigued by your girl. He's spent loooots of time on assignment, which means he's spent loooots of time playing viddy games and watching movies and YouTube videos when he had nothing to do at the moment.

Hahaha yes, all Koreans are ex-soldiers, but not all of them decided to keep it up for 16 years. Glad you like him though. I'm looking forward to seeing what other people come up with. Also seeing your producers in action.

>3> My girl is going to ask his thoughts about CoD and whether they manage to capture how it is to do all those cool missions - and also about the gun mechanics in the game. Definitely can see them both as friends right on the get-go. But wanted to say that your character sheet for Hyun looks awesome!

<-< Also, man, I can't wait for some animosity and drama between my girl and someone. Because you know, drama will always do good in reality shows. I can imagine my character being the sassy one at first - but she would immediately flee first at seeing danger. Lol!

Sadly doesn't seem to be much interest in this one to get it off the ground and start making up a character sheet so I think I'll leave it at that for now.  Thanks for those who did express interest.
