Nearly twenty years since the First Contact war, humans are still adjusting to the idea of sharing the galaxy with intelligent, alien life. With no spot on the Citadel council, and a desperate need to play 'catch up', the human race is challenged every day to represent the very best their species has to offer.

It’s with hungry enthusiasm that some of the very best and brightest have jumped at the opportunity to live and work with these aliens. It has taken years of negotiating and planning, but finally, the ambassadors representing humanity and a few dozen brilliant minded scientists have been granted permission to set up within the Citadel in an effort to show what they are capable of. And while this has caused some tension and political strife, the human race has been assured that their people will be well taken care of. There was no place safer than the Citadel, and it was in everyone’s interest to learn how to work together in order to keep this intergalactic peace.

So it doesn’t look good for the other Council races when a strange illness begins to spread throughout the station, infecting the very humans they’ve sworn to protect. Starting off as fever and chills, the illness progresses into symptoms of shortness of breath, nausea, and respiratory failure within a week. Those who are in ‘late stages’ or who have died completely are taken into custody and hidden from public view. But they have discovered that treatment is possible, but those who are treated inevitably fall into a deep coma that they are unable to climb out of. A quarantine has been put into effect and further studies on this disease are ongoing, but new rumors have started to surface and their implications are troubling, to say the least. Only those with first-hand experience and top security clearances know more.

To save those infected, a task force of skilled and dedicated individuals has been put together to retrieve precious cargo said to be the cure. The only problem: it’s located right in the middle of Batarian controlled space.

The council is unable to authorize the travel of any military convoys into the Terminus System, so they’ve assigned one of their Spectres to command this operation. A ship and all the tools necessary to accomplish their goal has been provided, now it’s up to this newly forged team to get the job done.

Current Status of the plot in progress:- A team has been put together to investigate a virus that seems to be targeting humans. While the ship is getting prepared to leave, the turian councilor has pulled some of the key members of this crew into his private office in order to give them classified information, normally reserved for a Spectre's clearance level.

Current Status of the plot in progress:- The Kalanhai is underway for departure of the Citadel, and on its way to make its first jump at a Mass Relay.

Current Status of the plot in progress:-  The team has left Citadel space and found their way to the planet Aphras in the Xe Cha system, where scans and research teams have narrowed down their search. Three teams of four have landed on the moon, Reetix, and are making unusual discoveries...

Current Status of the plot in progress:-  Their mission on Reetix has fallen apart, the three squads stumbling across Bloodpack mercenaries, a new alien race (the vorcha) and a pissed off mama Harvester... There might have even a krogan trebuchet, but he didn't exactly stick the landing.

Current Status of the plot in progress:- Finally, the crew has returned to the Kalanhai, battered, exhausted, and with a lot to think about as the evidence they've collected points their ship and the rest of the crew towards Omega...

Current Status of the plot in progress:- The Kalanhai has made port on Omega. Now, to bring their prisoners to Aria herself, and hope that they can start negotiations with a little leverage and good graces...

  • No OOC drama. We’re all adults here, so let's act like it. Be respectful. Be Patient.

  • This is NOT a first-come, first-served game. I'm looking for players who make interesting characters and don't have a history of abandoning ship after three posts.

  • Writing will be in the third-person point of view.

  • Please post at least once a week. Otherwise, you'll be skipped and the GM may move your character out of the scene. It's not polite to hold everyone up.

  • Post length minimum is two full paragraphs. Quality over quantity. This won't be a speed game, I don't have the time to post a dozen times a day.

  • Communicate. If you’re going on vacation, please let us know. If something is bothering you, or if you're confused or just stuck in a creative rut, communicate, communicate, communicate.

  • Full knowledge of the game or its setting isn't required, but general concepts and a willingness to learn are appreciated.

  • No godmoding. Get permission before you do anything with anyone else’s character.

  • No means no. Always.

  • Please no photos of real people in this game, I'd like to stick with more illustration this time around.

  • All characters must be original, and have no direct connection to the canon characters of the Normandy. No long-lost siblings, sorry.

Note: I know my timeline isn't perfect, but it should give a good idea of when this story takes place; roughly nine year before the start of the first Mass Effect game.

Please PM character sheets directly to me for approval, rather than posting them here. But feel free to ask questions if there is anything tickling your curiosity!

Rylin

I'd like to put down an interest flag. It's been a few years since I last played through the games so I'm a bit rusty on the lore, but I'm rereading and familiarising myself with it. I do have a few questions though; what should we put down in the Skills section? The in-game skills like incendiary ammo, singularity, overload, etc. or something a bit related to their talents as a character? Also, does Occupation mean their role in the RP or their occupation before they were assigned to the Spectre's crew?

Nameless One

I love the ME trilogy, so I'm pretty interested in this game! I'll keep an eye on this post and if work & study allow it, I'll make a character.
It is "Torment". It is that which draws all tormented souls to you. The flesh knows it suffers, even when the mind has forgotten. And so you wear the rune always.

Well if it helps any, there will be no involvement of Reapers, the original crew, or even Cerberus in this story. I really wanted to touch on something that was focussed on character interaction in one of my favorite settings, throw a ragtag crew together, and enjoy the hijinks and chaos that may unfold.  ;D As for your questions!

1) Skills: At the top of the character sheet, I've listed character tropes that I would like to have played. These aren't set in stone, I'm going to be flexible on occupation, but to make a balanced team, those are my suggestions. For skills, I mostly want people to fill in what feels correct with their character. A medic doesn't really make sense to also play the role of a hacker, you know? You can choose from the skill selection in the games, easily acquired with a Google search, but don't worry about adding 'incendiary ammo' because that'll be a free give. Does this help?

2)Occupation: This will be at your discretion. Let's say that you were interested in playing the Spectre. You can add 'Spectre' into the occupation field, and in brackets, write something like (hacker). Specters are versatile, so it would make sense they have a specialty. The same goes for the Merc: since a military presence isn't allowed, this individual may be more than a gun-for-hire. I'll allow creative freedom and flexibility, but I want it to make sense, and I don't want anyone to be the best at everything. That just makes it no fun for the rest of the team. And what I loved the most about Mass Effect 2, was how the team had to work together and adjust to their differences. ;D

Life always comes first, I totally understand that! I almost didn't create this game because my own career likes to steal away every precious amount of free time I might possess lol. But here I am, trying anyway. (Fingers crossed!)

Rylin

That's what drew me in as well. The early days of the humans' contact with the citadel is such an interesting setting. Thank you for answering the questions in depth! I'm going to brainstorm and whip up a character now, but I won't claim a role or anything. Fingers crossed this takes off!

Malrunar

I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with! ;D I'll be posting my own characters soon as well, see if that sparks any creativity and interest in the others.

»  Samantha Adams  «

Name:- Samantha “Sam” Adams

Age:- 27 Years

Sexuality:- Pansexual

Race:- Human

Birthplace:- San Diego, California. Earth.

Occupation:- Doctor, specializing in new Xeno-biology studies, with a minor in kinesiology.

Personality Traits:- Compassionate | Easy-going | Personable | Brave | Altruistic |  Strong-willed | Optimistic

Synospsis:- Medicine was in her blood; it came from her father’s side of the family, enriched with a long line of doctors and scientists who looked to solve some of the more complex questions rising to the surface of humanity. They were known for their contributions of resolving pandemics triggered in densely populated areas, eezo poisoning from exposure to that rare material, and the strange biotic phenomenon this sometimes induced. While her uncle was one of the leading scientists behind the study of biotics, Samantha’s father was interested in the more traditional form of medicine.

He joined the Alliance navy, served as a doctor with honors, but before he was able to open his own practice and settle into his twilight years, the war broke out upon alien discovery, changing everything.

Samantha’s father was part of the Second Fleet who swept into turian occupied Shanxi and evicted them from the human colony. He was also one of the six-hundred and twenty-three human lives lost in the three-month conflict.

The death of her father destroyed her mother, who took to heavy drinking and wasted away with her grief. This left the young woman all alone, but Samantha looked to honor her family by dedicating herself to medicine and to learn about the new aliens so a repeat of these events wouldn’t have to happen to anyone else. Her paper on emergency medicine used at the battle of Shanxi regarding turian biology and its variance to humans helped to put her on the list of candidates volunteering to make the move to the Citadel. And it was her contributions to the Sirta Foundation’s development of Medi-Gel adaptation to xeno-physiology that put her towards the top of that list.

For the past three months, Samantha has been working hard to make a difference and strengthen the peace between species. She holds no grudge against the turian race as a whole -but it seems the bitterness between their two species still has a long journey ahead. She hopes that her presence and dedication will resolve further conflict, and bridge the divide.

Skills:-

- Samantha is not combat trained, although the Alliance did instruct her on basic knowledge of weapons use and close-quarters combat in their ‘survival class’.
- As non-military personnel, her omni-tool does not have any offensive upgrades, but they did provide her with cloaking and the ability to disperse medi-gel.

Weaknesses and Flaws:-

- Work ethics:- Sometimes its impossible to tear her away from the job, or to sit back and relax.
- She will do nearly anything to save a life, and to keep others from harm. Even if this means she must put herself at risk.
- Sense of isolation:- She is friendly and outgoing and will give anyone who needs one an ear, but she keeps her thoughts close to her chest and finds it difficult to open up to others.

Kinks:- On/Off list.

Notes:- Living on the Citadel for the past few months has given Samantha quite the opportunity, but there are still several races she has yet to be introduced to. Batarians, Krogan and Quarians, for example. She has the most personal experience with the Salarians and Asari

I am still on shift for a while so it'll take me a while to actually be able to do research/dig up art/plot out details, but I've got some ideas. I know you took the medic role already, but considering how important the epidemic issue is for future galactic politics, a scientist/engineer with medical skills seems important. Two heads better than one, and all that?

I'm rolling around the idea of a Quarian scientist/virologist. There's been no real progress in shoring up Quarian immune systems recently, so maybe studying this new disease and it's cure (and Humanity's immune system) could lead to some advancements for the Quarians (As well as earning good will from a race that isn't yet racist towards them)? I'm just not sure if it makes sense to go full engineer role and hiding that she's a scientist, or openly being a scientist with a little Quarian engineering skills on the side? The latter feels like it makes more sense, but I don't want to step on your toes with my concept Malrunar.

Any thoughts/advice on shoring this up and narrowing things down so I can submit a proper application?

Absolutely! ;D I added another Scientist role to the list - honestly I'm glad you brought this up because I wanted there to be an even number of characters, and just as you said, two heads are better than one! Those roles are meant to be more as loose guidelines anyway, so for anyone else looking to make adjustments feel free to voice your thoughts/ideas!

I especially love the angle you presented about making good first impressions between the different species. Sam will be all about that! Plus, having someone experienced on the technical side of medicine, as well as the submicroscopic level, will be a boon!

Latooni Subota

Great. I'll see what I can do about making a great application after work then, for my Quarian Virologist. Cross-species teamwork let's go!

Woo! Here's to setting the example!  ;D

Rylin

I'm thinking about making a Turian Spectre that served in the First Contact war as a fresh-faced sixteen years old and lost his friends and family in the war. This would've soured his view on the humans right off the bat, and he won't be happy at all that he's been assigned to this particular mission. He keeps his mouth shut and attempts to be civil most of the time, but there are times when the bad blood inevitably comes out. He'd change his standings and view as he develops and mellows out, though. Would this be okay? I'm happy to make another character if you feel this one might cause too much friction.

This sounds wonderful, actually! Adds to the diversity, and gives the team further obstacles to work through. I like the fact that he's bitter toward humans through experience -and now he's having to babysit at least one in order to help their entire race. Beautiful irony.

Latooni Subota

That'd be pretty interesting imo. If we both get in, having a Turian who wants nothing to do with the humans, and Quarian who wants EVERYTHING to do with them in order to make a good impression and make allies for her race, could lead to some interesting interactions.

Name:- Ja'sia 'Jay' V'doris

Age:- 127

Sexuality:- Pansexual

Race:- Asari

Birthplace:- The Citadel

Occupation:- Pilot

Personality Traits:- Cocky | Sassy | Sweet | Fearless | Clever | Resourceful | Energetic | Flirtatious | Playful

Synospsis:- Jay's mother is an influential member of Citadel politics, and her father was a high-ranking member of the Turian military.  Even though he's been dead for almost a hundred years, he is still remembered and revered by members of Turian society for his brilliant tactical mind and bravery.  Her mother is also considered somewhat impressive in her keen sense of diplomacy and charm.

Jay grew up in the Citadel, and from the time she was little, she knew that she wasn't all that much like her parents.  She had no desire to be respected for her mental prowess or poise.  She awed her peers instead by way of fearlessness and willingness to pull crazy, death-defying stunts or pranks on authority figures.  The applause and cheers from her friends more than made up for the many times she injured herself or got into trouble for sneaking a live rodent into a teacher's desk or nearly managing to venture out on an unauthorized spacewalk.

As she got older, Jay fell in love with space and the idea of navigating through it.  She managed to sneak out on more than one of those unauthorized spacewalks over the years, and as soon as she could, she joined flight school to learn how to be a pilot.  On her downtime, she clocked hundreds of hours in flight sims, and piloted the X3M through the station.  In fact, she was hired on as a shuttle jockey when everyone got tired of punishing her for taking the vehicles without permission.  After that, it was just a matter of trying to keep her from modding the controls and/or engines for more speed and terrifying her passengers.

Despite her flaws, no one could deny that Jay was a natural space jockey, and she graduated from flight school with honors.  She's spent over a hundred years since then flying for pretty much anyone that would hire her, including the Council, and volunteering for any mission that will take her into danger or far from the Citadel.  She's still impulsive, rebellious, and cocky as hell, perhaps even more so, but she's also a damn good pilot and willing to risk everything for a taste of adventure.

Skills:-

- Jay is well-trained in biotics, and while she hasn't had the time to fully develop her mastery over mass effect fields, her natural abilities combined with her training make her more than adequate.

- Gifted with the agility and grace of the Asari, Jay also learned the unique fighting style of her people.  She can more than hold her own even without a weapon, using the unique, balletic martial art.

- Jay is pretty well-versed in all manner of vehicle repair, maintenance, modifying, and hacking.  This doesn't extend to any mechanical apparatus that can't be ridden, driven, or flown, however.

Weaknesses and Flaws:- Jay's thrill-seeking, reckless, rebellious nature are often a detriment, especially given her parent's status and the reputation her people have for dignity and intelligence.  It's kind of hard to look dignified when you've just crashed a modified X3M into the wall of a vast Citadel corridor during a drag race with one of your friends.  Jay is also more than a little cocky about her piloting skills.  Sure, she's an excellent flier, but no one is perfect and she's claimed to be the best on more than one occasion.

»  Lia'Manah vas Alarei  «

Name:- Lia'Manah vas Alarei

Age:- 28

Sexuality:- Bicurious: Primarily attracted to 'soft' humanoids (Asari, Quarians, Humans, and in rare cases Salarians)

Race:- Quarian

Birthplace:- Migrant Fleet, The Rayya

Occupation:- Scientist (Specialized in Virology)

Personality Traits:- Lia'Manah is a touch excitable, in an oddly Salarian manner. She is very focused, and has a habit of picking up quirks and mannerisms from people around her. She can't help but come at problems from an academic view, and despite her excitable nature tries to logic her way even through emotional issues, which can rub people the wrong way. She is a Quarian patriot, and considers helping her people to be her number one priority, which colors a lot of her interactions.

Synospsis:- Lia'Manah was born on the Rayya, a ship in the Migrant Fleet. Her family was a little bit . . . odd compared to some of the other science-inclined Quarians. The then-Captain, Lia's aunt, had an odd love affair with a Salarian scientist and invited him to live on the ship (taking all due precautions). This advanced research in a couple of fields a fair bit, but Lia was the one who grew closest to the quickly aging Salarian, and picked up his scientific bent the most.

When she left the fleet to go on her Pilgrimage (sadly missing the death of her favorite alien uncle) she quickly learned that no amount of studying can prepare you for the greater galaxy. The racism was certainly a big slap in the face, though her rather womanly figure did open a few doors that would normally have been closed. She was lucky enough to get work in a medical research lab, immediately working under yet another Salarian scientist. It was here that she ended up specializing in virology, the frenetic pace of Salarian research and teaching something she was well-suited to, and proved to be rather gifted in it (and several related fields). Of course, this didn't actually complete her Pilgrimage, and she did want to return to the Fleet eventually, so after several years she cut a deal with 'certain Salarian interests'.

I'm not saying she assisted a member of the STG in an off-the-grid mission, but Lia disappeared for a year. When the year was up she returned to the fleet with a bit more combat training, a scar from a suit rupture, and a number of particularly expensive and hard-to-get starship parts to give to the Fleet to finish her Pilgrimage. In a totally unrelated note a Salarian black site that doesn't exist definitely didn't have valuable scientists' lives saved by a rag-tag group of plucky scientists and engineers. After receiving her invitation to the Alarei's crew on her return to fleet, she spent most of her time engaging in medical research, and occasionally working together with Quarian Marines (and occasionally some Salarians) in the odd bit of field work. Usually assisting young Quarians in trouble on their Pilgrimage, or work in cataloguing and developing treatments for diseases of other races.

When the new human-centric malady hit, it was pointed out by some of the Salarians working on the crisis that the brightest young mind in virology was a Quarian, and had close ties to a Salarian medical research lab. She was discretely moved off of the Alarei to help with an unspecified issue by the Salarians so as to keep the secrecy around the crisis intact. Lia realized that this was an unprecedented opportunity to have a Quarian establish close ties with the new race on the block. When this was all over and the crisis was declassified, Humanity would know it was a Quarian that helped deal with new virus, buying a lot of good will for her people. Who knows, maybe it would be just the foot in the door her people needed to set up some joint colonization treaties with the Alliance, and finally get some of her people back on land again.

Skills:- -Lia is a scientist first and foremost, as is experienced with all manner of lab devices and specialized programs for dealing with diseases and medical research.
-All Quarians are given a bit of combat training (depending on their chosen specializations), before their Pilgrimage. In Lia's case she is checked out on pistols and offensive omni-tool programs.
-Lia does have some skill in Engineering, though certainly not enough to actually be a Chief Engineer of a ship, and primarily geared towards medical and starship equipment. A Quarian that can't patch a hull breach or shutdown an overloading engine is a dead Quarian.

Weaknesses and Flaws:- Hyperactivity: Lia picked up TOO many habits from Salarians, and tends to bulldoze her way through conversations like a Krogan in a bar.
Tunnel Vision: When she's not running around on a sugar high, she tends to overfocus on something, a problem that has actually gotten her shot once in a combat situation.
Quarian Stereotype: Suit punctures are bad, and Lia is physically rather weak. What a nerd.

Kinks:- o/o

Notes:- Lia is a somewhat short quarian, and prefers black and white with red accents for her enviromental suits and armor.
