All done except for the Heartsong player connection

Name: Winry
Ancestry: Human
Class: Witch
Calling: Heartsong

Blood: +2 protection
Mind: +0 protection
Echo: +1 protection
Fortune: +0 protection
Supplies: +0 protection

Core Abilities:
In The Blood – +1 Echo Protection; once per situation when taking stress to any resistance other than Echo, allocate it to Echo.
Crucible – At any time, roll a D6. If it’s equal to or under your current Echo stress, clear that much stress from Echo and roll with mastery on your next action. If it’s over your current Echo stress, add that much stress to Echo.
True Form – Whenever you want to, or when you suffer Major fallout, you enter your true form. When in your true form, you roll with mastery on Hunt and Kill checks, but all other checks become Risky. At the end of the current situation, you revert to your humanoid form.

Major Abilities:
Exsanguinate – Spell functions as a weapon (Kill, D6, ranged). You may mark stress accrued as a result of using this spell to Echo.

Minor Abilities:
Heart-Wise – Add the Kill skill.
The Old Blood – Gain the Discern skill. When you observe someone for a few seconds, you can read their aura and discern their surface-level emotions.
Red Dominion – Gain +2 Blood protection.

Skills:

  • Compel
  • Discern
  • Kill

Domains:

  • Occult

Equipment:

  • Sacred Blade (Kill, D6, Bloodbound)
  • Bullet casing charm bracelets with occult sigils etched into them
  • Well-worn scrimshaw kit
  • Messily kept dream journal with extensive diagrams

Resources: Worn Jewelry (D6, Haven)

Beats:

  • (Minor) Find a heart-touched sapling on a delve and bring it back to a haven for planting
  • (Minor) Communicate with something of the Heart

Appearance:

History:

Born and raised in the City Below, Winry has had a very different upbringing than those in the cities above. When she was still very young she went on some delves, looking to make a place in the world for herself, though a delve eventually went wrong and she ended up in the clutches of Magi-Mal. For reasons known only to the crazed witch, she decided to "adopt" Winry and infect her with her tainted blood. A couple years passed before she managed to escape during another delve's attempt to contact Magi-Mal, allowing for a brief distraction. Eventually she made her way back to the relative safety of a nearby Haven. From there she found herself drawn to Hallow for a short time before the Heartsong began to sing to her in her sleep, pulling her away.

Questions

Ancestry:

  • You’re third-generation Heartborn, and not at all like the humans on the surface. What incorrect assumption do people most often make about you?

    • People often assume she is recently arrived from The Spire and that she has some understanding of mechanical apparatus, which she is not and does not.

Calling:

  • Which three images, symbols, people or creatures do you repeatedly see when you dream?

  • What signs do you look for to recognize where the Heart is strongest?

    • Roots of flesh twisted into recognizable symbols that only she can recognize.

  • You recently witnessed an unearthly sight with another player character. Who was it, what happened and how did they react?

  • Your connection to the Heart has touched you in some way. How does that manifest?

    • An exceptionally long, blood-red tongue with small fleshy nubs along the sides towards the base and long blood-red markings across her body..

Maybe I missed it in the core rulebook, but how many Beats are we supposed to have listed?  I saw where there should be two active at any given session, but I'm unclear on how many should be chosen.

Or, is it that *all* major and minor beats are boxes to be checked off as the story progresses?

Are we constrained to the beats listed for the Calling, or can we write our own?

Still in progress. Need a couple questions answered using other people's characters, need to figure out what Ignais looks like, and decide the last minor advance. Debating between Grim Reaper,  Marked for Death, and Last Rights for the last minor advance.

Edit: Settled on Marked for Death

Name: Ignais
Ancestry: Drow
Class: Deadwalker
Calling: Penitent

Blood: 0
Mind: 0
Echo: 0
Fortune: 0
Supplies: 0

Skills:
Delve
Sneak
hunt

Domains:
Desolate

Equipment:
Great Sword Kill d10 tiring

Resources:
Bag of interesting teeth D6 Desolate

Beats:
Take a minor Blood Fallout
Help someone vulnerable with no expectation of repayment

Appearance:

Carries a well worn brass statuette of an open mouthed toad and Small collection of Half-sten Horror sensationalist pulp literature. Keeps a Locket depicting a beautiful one-eyed drow as a sign of her calling.

History:

• You were born in the City Above and served a durance – four years of indentured servitude – under the rule of the cruel aelfir. What were you forced to do? Ignais spent time as a personal assistant for her aelfir master during his four year durance, managing the day to day affairs and more importantly their handled their less savory transactions who the aelfir did not want to interact with. The four years were relatively uneventful but when she left she had a little bit of money she’d embezzled away and knew exactly where all of her master’s most precious valuables were stored.

• What marks your order out from others like it? After her durance she was left on his own, she was left seething at the sights she’d seen so when she was contacted by a member of the Ministry of Our Hidden Mistress she was quick to accept. The cell she was in specialized in dealing with the upper levels of the Spire and working against the games the high elves played there.

Eventually it put them up against his old masters. Relying on his old information they struck, aiming to steal blackmail material and whatever valuables they could get their hands on. The run went wrong, the others dead or captured. And Ignais?  Executed by her previous master who tested the venom of the latest addition to the family’s menagerie and yet she lived.

Death didn’t take and she escaped by disappearing into the Grey before finding herself outside, burned and on her head lay the death of the others. A burned lone agent, the Ministry sent her down to the Derelictus and the city beneath to serve out her penance there and if they needed to use her as a tool to serve as a tool for their own ends.

• What evidence of your failings is visible in the City Beneath? In the City Beneath she has tried to hide away whatever signs of his failures as he could but well she could never hide everything. There were a few wanted posters left around from her escape. There was a temporarily increased guard presence on the border between Red Row and the Derelictus with a few shady people with questions about new comers to the City Beneath. If any of her old cell survived they would make their way down as well followed by members of the Ministry if they had use of her.

• Pick one of the other player characters; they were present at your betrayal. How were they involved? Kahyne was one of the aelifr present during her attempted theft  of the goods and blackmail material from her previous aelfir masters and subsequently the extermination of the rest of her Ministry cell although she is currently unaware of it.

unanswered questions

• Pick one of the other player characters; you look up to them as an example of how to live one’s life. What inspired this?

Abilities and Advances
Core Abilities:
NOT YET. Your willpower, fueled with guilt, is legendary. Once per session, activate this ability to avoid suffering negative effects from Blood or Mind fallout for the remainder of the situation.

DEATH FOLLOWS CLOSE
You never knew anyone could love you as much as your own death. You are followed around by a manifestation of your death that is invisible and intangible to everyone but you although when you are on the verge of dying, or in places that resonate heavily with death and sorrow, it might be visible to others. The exact appearance of it is up to you. The first time each session you suffer Major Blood, Mind or Fortune fallout, your death manifests to protect you and inflicts D8 stress on whatever caused the fallout.

Enter the Grey: ENTER THE GREY
You know the trick of stepping sideways into the Grey the space between the worlds of the living and the worlds of the dead. Roll Delve+Religion to enact this ritual. It takes around ten minutes of preparation, e.g. donning ritual garb, inhaling sacred smoke, communing with your death and so on. On a success, the smoke clears, and you (and anyone you bring with you) are in the Grey. Within the Grey, the world is a shadowy echo of its living counterpart. Some souls linger here, awaiting their eternal reward, but for the most part it is grim, empty and monochrome. (For more information on travelling and surviving the Grey, see p. 169.) Exiting the Grey is a simple enough task for a Deadwalker and those they ferry across; it’s a Delve+Religion roll for anyone else.

Advances
Major: Sudden Death Your soul is so poorly attached to your body that you can dive headlong into the Grey without warning. ENTER THE GREY no longer takes ten minutes to cast – it is instantaneous. Bringing others along with you when you cast it in this manner makes the action Risky.

Minor: Liminal  Gain +2 Blood protection after entering the Grey. You can see and interact with people who are in the living world– they appear as indistinct blurs at a distance, but become clearer when nearby. You manifest as a weird, semi-ethereal phantom when you use this ability.

Minor: Shadow
Your body, unmoored from the lands of the living, can become shadowy and indistinct. Gain the Sneak skill. By blowing out a lit candle and focusing, you can extinguish all light sources nearby. Sources that cannot be easily extinguished (magelights, glowworms, etc) are temporarily muted instead.

Minor: Marked for Death
Your death tells you stories of dark specters that swarm the land in search of doomed souls. Gain the Hunt skill. In addition, you can mark prey. When you mark prey, you spend ten minutes or so observing your target from hiding and whispering words of death over your weapon. When you hunt prey you have marked, roll with mastery.Your mark endures until your target dies or you mark another creature

You can have up to 2 beats "active" at a time, page 10 talks about it.

As far as I saw it didn't say anything about custom beats, but you can make your own Callings so I imagine you should be able to make your own beats for existing Callings as well, but that's up to the GM.

Thank you, good sir.  That helps a great deal; I think I'm good with what's in the book so far, but maybe down the line I'll discuss custom beats with our illustrious GM.

OK, so if I've done everything right, here's my character...

Lines:  None
Veils:  Watersports, scat, CBT

Name:  Kahyne Dhorrek
Ancestry:  Gnoll
Class:  Junk Mage
Calling:  Enlightenment
Beats:

  • Kill someone who is trying to stop you from claiming knowledge (Major)
  • Gain access to knowledge that someone tried to conceal (Minor)

Blood:  0
Mind:  0
Echo:  0
Fortune:  0
Supplies:  0

Skills:

  • Discern (Knack)
  • Sneak
  • Evade
Domains:

  • Occult
  • Haven
Core Abilities:

  • Unorthodox Methods (gain the Discern skill; once per session, before rolling dice to resolve an action, instead state that your result is a 6; you succeed but take stress)
  • Ravening Knowledge (when Mind stress is 4 or higher, roll with mastery when casting a spell)
  • Sacrifice (before casting a spell, opt to destroy a resource with the Occult domain.  Roll the resource’s dice; the amount rolled is added to your Protection value against any stress incurred as a result of casting the spell)
Major Abilities:

  • Kiss of the Drowned Queen (with a touch, you can conjure salt water in the lungs of those who oppose you.  This spell functions as the following weapon: (Kill D6, Piercing).  If the target is at least shin-deep in water, it inflicts D8 damage)
Minor Abilities:

  • Mark of Shadow (gain Sneak skill; hiding from someone or something is always a Standard action for you, and never Risky or Dangerous)
  • Frontier Etiquette (gain Haven domain; first time each session that you use a haunt, your spent resource counts as one dice size higher)
  • Mark of the Phantom (gain Evade skill; once per situation, when you mark stress due to physical harm or detection, you may make the GM reroll the stress dice; keep the second result, even if it’s higher)
Equipment:

  • Vial of rainwater from the southlands (trinket) - Kayne uses this as a focus/talisman when evoking Kiss of the Drowned Queen
  • Tiny sealed box that gets angry when you shake it (trinket)
  • Book of handwritten theories and observations (mark of calling)
  • Hungry knife (Kill D6, Brutal, Bloodbound, Dangerous)
Resources:

  • Vial of cursed ink (D6 Occult)
Appearance:
Kahyne has found himself in the body of a gnoll, roughly seven feet tall, and relatively trim at 280 pounds.  This is in stark contrast to the lithe aelfir body he was born into, and it's something that he's come to have a love-hate relationship with.
Physically, his spotted dark-brown fur covers deep green-grey flesh.  His mane is reddish-grey, and he takes occasional pleasure in raising it as an intimidation tactic.  His eyes are the typical gnollish black.
Upon finding himself naked and screaming on an empty road in tier 1 of the Heart, Kayne viciously attacked the first group of delvers that he encountered, stealing what he needed from their corpses.  As a result, his clothing is often ill-fitting, yet does not seem to hinder his movement.

History (Questions)

  • You were born down here.  What image do you project to impress, surprise or intimidate people?  Kahyne wasn't "born" as much as imperfectly resurrected.  He was born aelfir, progeny of prosperity and status, but met a bad end.  His resurrection three years ago was performed by a witch who may or may not have intended the rebirth to be a punishment, sending his soul into the body of a gnoll.  His anger at being trapped in the form of his race's hated enemy is sometimes palpable; yet other times he's calm, almost friendly, finding an island of peace with his fate.  Depending on the circumstance, he may use his visage to his advantage, attempting to intimidate others into doing what he wants; other times, he can sense allies in his quest to uncover the reason for his current body, who made him this way, and to reverse or change it, if possible.

  • What “impossible” thing are you attempting to achieve in the City Beneath?  To become "un-resurrected"; to return to an aelfir body, or at least find out how and why he came to be this way, and take retribution if necessary.

  • What’s the first step on your journey?  Finding allies, possibly friends.  Being a gnoll is humiliating, yet tolerable in the right company.

  • Choose another player character.  You know they’re hiding secrets from you – why do you suspect they’re doing this?  Kahyne recognizes a former indentured servant of the aelfir in Ignais, and assumes that she's untrustworthy, but can't quite pin down why.  As they delve together, she can prove his prejudice wrong...  Or right.

Unanswered Question

  • Choose another player character.  They’ve been invaluable in your journey so far.  What have you learned from them?  (To be confirmed with Re Z L:  Kahyne naturally turns to a Witch to learn more about the (supposed) Witch's curse he's undergone; Winry is willing to help, but ultimately she's more interested in learning what sort of power it was that could have done something like that and would ultimately try and take it for herself. Likewise they're both magic-y sorts so they'll have certain occult interests in common, perhaps research and/or ritual work together. Heartsong/Enlightenment callings have an interesting contrast as well, they're both kind of similar in a sense.)

History:

A traveller from a distant land - May is from the Home Nations, a deep warren of sprawling caverns. She grew up in a small village and was identified as a Witch young by the local 'Cunning woman' who took her from her family and taught her the ways of the True Form and how to be a benefit to her people through cunning and the healing arts.

Spoiler: Click to Show/Hide

May's dreams had always been turbulent and strange, deep colours, dark purples and reds and browns; fractured realities; twisted scenes of orgiastic delight with all of the BDSM trappings that put the icing on the cake, things with too many legs and eyes scuttling in the dark seeking prey; large, pale, wet, pulsing, leathery eggs standing in rows waiting; deep chasms full of glowing points of light stretching as far down as the eye could see, rope bridges stretched between vast stalagmites with people and commerce and hubub; dark deeds arranged in quiet corners of seedy nightlife spots; creatures of spines and too many limbs and teeth, washing through a village touching, and changing, the inhabitants as they pass; a transforming flesh, her own, male, female, neither, both, two heads arguing with each other, splitting, joining, crawling over each other, becoming many, flowing into the world and taking root in the minds of all. Always transformation of people, of places, of flesh, of ideas, of morality, of dreams. Always the pulse of a dark bass beat in the background, a double thump repeated, slow, measured. Always May herself trying to retain her own core, her personality, in this twisting, changing, evolving dreamscape. Never afraid, never did she wake screaming, sweating and terrified, if she woke panting it was generally due to her body reacting with need to the strange things that her mind threw at her while she dreamed.

May learned the signs, the dark colours, deep red and purple, the morality warping, the changing of minds and flesh, the little notes and motes of realities bleeding into each other. Started to ask questions, hear answers, put the pieces together. There was a place where all this was stronger, this thing that made her shake and grasp, this thing that called out to her at night, this force, this entity she had no name for but lust. It was a long journey, up to the surface world where the light would blind and burn one who had dwelled for all time in the dark, but this was the journey, this was the requirement. This was what was needed.

To find this source, this thing, this draw, this lust, May set out from the village, from her mentor, against the best wishes of the woman who had raised her, while all others were asleep. Stealing away from home with a bag of meagre possessions on a pole on one shoulder, marching on and up, further than she had ever been, finding the light, hiding from it during the day, walking on at night, always at night, following the signs. Months of walking, selling her skills as a healer for food and board, joining trade caravans, adjusting a little to the daylight hours slowly, finally ahead was The Spire. The draw was strong here, the pulse from her dreams was there, faint, in the background, but she could feel it, in her chest, in her belly, calling, pulling, into the city, under it, deep.

The need, the lust, the desire, the transformation, the energy, the dynamism of this thing she is being drawn to calls to things deep in May that she doesn't truly grasp or understand. She needs to figure these things out about this world and about herself.

Major Abilities:

Great and Terrible - You unlock the power of your true form - an awe-inspiring union of magic and flesh. You are no longer forced to assume your true form when you take Major Fallout. When you choose to enter your true form, all adversaries who can see you take D4 stress.

Minor Abilities:

Witch Spit - They say that the spittle of witches can cure minor ailments, repair broken trinkets and soothe an aching heart. Yours closes up exit wounds. Gain the Mend skill. When you want it to be, your spit becomes adhesive and can harden into a tarry, sticky substance.

Blood-Quiet - The darkness of the City Beneath beats black within your veins. Gain the Sneak skill. When you enter your True Form, Sneak and Evade rolls are no longer considered Risky.

Wild-Witch - You know the secrets of the wild things of the world, and are skilled at distilling their essences. Gain the Wild domain. When you're in a landmark and have time to prepare, you can turn a resource with the Wild domain into a healing draught. When drunk, this draught removes Blood or Mind stress equal to its dice size minus one step - choose whether it's Blood or Mind when you create it.

@Re Z L:  Would you consider helping me answer Kahyne's first question?  "Choose another player character.  They’ve been invaluable in your journey so far.  What have you learned from them?"

Since Winry is a Witch, and Kahyne was resurrected, perhaps he's attached himself to her in the attempt to find answers, and she turns to him for support and protection of some sort....?

@Avalon29:  I think, perhaps, the answer to my other question ("Choose another player character.  You know they’re hiding secrets from you – why do you suspect they’re doing this?") might come from Ignais.  Perhaps Kahyne recognizes a former indentured servant of the aelfir, and assumes that she's untrustworthy, but can't quite pin down why.  As they delve together, she can prove his prejudice wrong...  Or right.

Thoughts?

Excellent, thank you!

Perhaps Kahyne could be the answer to Ignais' first question, in return?  Maybe before he was resurrected as a gnoll, Kahyne was there, and when the truth comes out that he's really aelfir, the feces impacts the rotating/oscillating device...

Still fiddling around with her personality in my head, but here's my first impressions: Kahyne naturally turns to a Witch to learn more about the (supposed) Witch's curse he's undergone, Winry is willing to help, but ultimately she's more interested in learning what sort of power it was that could have done something like that and would ultimately try and take it for herself. I like it.  Nothing's free in that kind of world, there's going to be some give and take.  I would be happy to work with that concept.  Please do let me know once you've finalized things for Winry, and we can settle any remaining details between these two.

Cheers!

Could be neat, would certainly end up with Ignais laughing her ass off at him since well, as an aelfir he could probably afford the undying surgery but wanted to try something different, aelfir and the world of the Spire in general is weird as heck. Would need to come up with a really good reason not to take him into the Grey and ditch him. Would make a good way to complete the "Do something your order would frown upon".  beat as well or a run in the crimson vigil could be an interesting mix up for the pair later for an I hate you but we need to deal with these people first kind of deal.

The way I had envisioned it was, since he's now in a gnoll's body. no one would let him back into Spire, and even if they for some reason did, no one would believe that he was who he said he was.  So he needs to find out how to return to his former body - if that's even possible - or find true peace with his new reality.  Maybe there's some part of Ignais that feels pity for him (grasping at straws) because he has stopped acting like a colossal dick, like pretty much all aelfir do.  Something like that.  *shrug*

Not sure what the "undying surgery" is (haven't had time to read too far into the core rulebook yet) so not sure how to respond to that point....

Ah, my bad. Pretty sure that's me using knowledge from the Spire, the one that the Heart has spun off of and is about the city on top of the Heart.  Heart doesn't quite go into  that kind of thing as much as the Spire does since the focus is different.

Many thanks to all of you lovely people for all the help with this.
I *think* I’ve got most of it right.

Can “Inspiration” be the search for what you need to accomplish, rather than working to accomplish something in specific?

All good!  I put the rulebook for Spire on my DriveThruRPG wishlist for future consideration...

Can you give me a quick synopsis on what that surgery is?  It seems like the kind of thing that Kahyne might know of.

Really expensive surgery performed by a powerful group called the Morticians. It's a three day long surgery and ritual where they cut out a heart, replace it with a totem, put the heart in a jar and fill it with a special dirt. (And just realized that might be a Pirates of the Caribbean reference)  You then freeze at whatever age you were at when you had the surgery, your eyes turn black and your skin turns white with gray veins. They no longer need food, sleep, or breathe but still want to do these things and finally they can no longer heal naturally and needs help to do so.

Both games are very cool, but Spire isn't quite as messed up as Heart is
