Star Wars: Criminal Empire

Star Wars: Criminal Empire World Building

(Where the OOC Thread will go when it is made)

(Where the IC Thread will go when it is made)

(Where the Character Sheets Thread will go when it is made)

Set around 29-30 ABY, this is a Star Wars fan world set up for an RP. It takes place 1-2 years after Star Wars: Bloodline, during the rise of the First Order and the rise of the Resistance. and takes place 4-5 years before Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and 25-26 years after the Star Wars: A New Hope. This RP will use the Star Wars current canon set up by Disney, including the Disney EU, as well as the use of aspects of the old EU/Legends that do not conflict with Disney canon.

The RP will be focused on using the Star Wars universe with OC's living in this setting. Rather than being focused on a war story, it will be more about the criminal underworld, outlaws, the law, politics, mercenaries, average workers, average people, in Star Wars. At this point only the Resistance even know the First Order exists and is a threat(With high ranking New Republic members knowing they exist but do not consider them a threat), the galaxy at large is unaware of the dark empire in hiding pulling the strings of many governments and criminal empires from behind the scenes. This is a time of rumors, speculation, and misinformation.

Each player will get to have one active character. If someone ends up wanting to play another character they can switch out to a new character but don't do this often try to stick to a character and focus on them. Player characters will be people that are hired to be a part of a crew that are just getting together to start working as a sort of ensemble. Characters don't have to be bad people, it's encouraged for characters to be likable and have redeeming factors and outright evil characters are discouraged. People can be working as criminals because they're down on their luck, don't have other options, were raised into it, it's all they're good at, they're greedy, don't fit in, are morally questionable, disagree with the laws, live outside of lawful society, or are even undercover or have some other agenda. Do not make characters who can only do battle. Having an enforcer in a group is handy but if a character can only function in battle it will limit what they can do and it will result in them trying to solve every problem with combat, which may not be an option in all scenarios. Diversify your character's portfolio.

It's alright for play characters to have a history with each other, if that's desired work it out with other players.

The story will follow the adventures of the player crew, it will be them taking and fulfilling jobs for clients that may go smoothly, may have complications, or may go disastrous. Player characters will make a name for themselves and will be working to improve their positions in the criminal underworld. It'll function similar to the tabletop Shadowrun. Each mission will be its own story though broadly there will be a general intersecting story linking various missions together. Sometimes it might be a bank heist, other times a smuggling run, maybe a hired hit, corporate espionage, intimidating a politician, there's going to be many jobs available and what players choose and don't choose will influence the story and world they are in. It will not be only the missions, as there will be between mission scenes.

The story can start on various planets, and can depend on where the first mission will take place. Common criminal worlds are Coruscant, Nar Shaddaa, Corellia, Hosnian Prime, Nal Hutta, Ord Mantell, Ryloth, Tatooine, Fondor, Malastare, Eriadu, Rodia.

I'd like 5-7 players. Any more than 7 is a bit large of a crew for now, though if it gets big enough it is possible to split it into multiple crews but that'd require a lot of interest. For proof of concept for characters please PM me them or post them here while working on them so I can approve them for finalization to be posted in the character sheet thread(When it is made).

Current Finalized Accepted Characters/Players: 0

Game: - Star Wars - Criminal Empire

  • Section the Game will be placed in and whether it is a system game or not.
Extreme is where it will have to go. Star Wars is not very gory but it is possible for people to get severely injured and killed in ways that can be considered gory. Aliens are also extremely common so that should be mentioned. This is a freeform game with stats and skills to help with character creation and making a judgement, but there is not a focus on dice rolling. If a dice roll occurs it's literally to determine a random thing not the norm.
  • Who is the RP open to? (Gender, Sexuality, etc..?)
Everyone. Male, Female, Nonbinary, Cis or Trans, Straight or Queer, etc.
  • Short Summary of Player Roles and General Story/Plot.
Players will each get one player character. The player characters are going to be people who are a part of a crew of criminals brought together to perform jobs for benefactors. They don't have to have a past with each other but will have to be able to work with others. There will be multiple jobs to pick from at times allowing for players to discuss and decide on what job to take. The story will follow the crew as they go on adventures based on their jobs, as they rise through the criminal underworld and end up intertwined in various plots that grow ever more precarious while trying to find out who exactly they are working for and what the ultimate agenda is of the people having them perform all these jobs.
  • Setting.
Star Wars. A fantasy science fiction universe set in another galaxy with faster-than-light space travel and magic(Though magic is incredibly rare).
  • Character creation info/guidelines if any.
There is a character sheet and information on how to fill it out in the World Building thread. I'd ask that characters not be monstrous personality wise. Make characters actually likable. They're criminals not Nazis. If a character is simply impossibly evil and cannot function in a group they will be denied. Think of it like Shadowrun, plenty in Shadowrun have questionable morals but are not ripping open puppies to eat them with forks made from the bones of orphans.
  • Required Resources (If any) (If a system game - What books(ver.) or links to information needed such as an online guide or wiki?)
World Building Section for Star Wars: Criminal Empire - There is an entire Wiki dedicated to canon Star Wars materials and there are movies and books but the world building thread contains links to many specific pages for the wiki and other bits to explain things. But a lot of things are pretty common knowledge and it's mostly depending on how setting specific people want to get in their descriptions.
  • Game Pacing.
  • How much sexual activity is likely to occur or expected, if any?
Sex is not the focus. It can happen but that is not the focus of this RP story is the focus.
  • Whether tagging will be used or not.
No

Game Master Info / GM(s) Participation Level (If/where applicable)

  • Will there be a Co-GM?
Currently there are no plans for a Co-GM.
  • How guided will the play be(sandbox, directed etc)?
It will be a directed story with jobs to take. There will be times outside of jobs but the focus is the adventures.
  • What extent will players be allowed to create/use environment or setting details?
As long as it isn't something that gives a clear advantage. Mentioning a drink being present or smaller details is fine. Introducing a new NPC that owes a favor or things introduced to gain advantages are not allowed. Certain things can be added with approval like species or types of weapons but that's more so a setting thing than an in-scene thing.
  • How NPC's will be handled. (If any) - (By GM and/or players, and what expectations)
The GM will handle NPC's.
  • How active will the GM be?
Very active.
  • Will there be an OOC thread? (expectations of thread usage)
There will be an OOC thread, please use it to contribute to conversations, ask questions, and discuss things about the RP.
  • How to contact/approach GM with questions? (use OOC thread, direct PM, etc...)
PM's or posting in the OOC thread. I prefer discussions be in the OOC.
  • How will decisions be resolved?
By judgement. There will be stats to aid with this but it will be judgement based with a focus on fairness.
  • Will PvP be allowed (if applicable)?
It can happen but that is not a focus. If it is clear someone has joined just to kill other player characters they will be kicked.

Additional:

  • A note to Respect Other players (Offs etc..)
Respect the Offs of others and read the Offs of others.
  • Player Participation Expectations. (Posts/week expected. Methods for reporting a possible absence/The method used to remove drop-outs from the game.)
Activity is encouraged. I can post daily typically but I'd like at least a post a week. If someone is going to be absent they should post in the thread or in their apologies and absences. Drop outs or absent characters will be simply written out of a scene via separating them or causing something to happen to get them out of there or render them unconscious. If they come back they can rejoin.
  • Discuss how new players will be brought into the game (if the game is already running.)
It depends on the scenario. If in between missions they can simply be added to the crew, if during a mission they can be a person of circumstance who was there and ends up roped into the job.
  • What Writing style/POV. (Third person, first person, past, present, omniscient, etc...)
Third person please.

Very interested! Freeform Star Wars always appeals.

Tolvo

Glad to hear! Anything you have questions about or want to suggest or discuss about the RP?  Or do you want to wait to see if more show interest? Any character concepts you're thinking of?

Kadigan

No questions really that spring to mind. As far as thoughts for characters...I do generally like the Chiss, but recently tried one for another game for a Nagai that might be fun.

Lissadell

Love me some criminal underbelly/Independent character SW RP. Definitely interested!

Tolvo

Currently Nagai are not in any canon sources but since we do have the Chiss and even the Yuuzhan Vong have been reintroduced to Canon through the Grysk, and the Unknown Regions are canon, I think we could put in the Nagai. The history might be a bit different and some things may need a bit of alteration. As far as I know generally they don't cause any conflicts with current canon, sonic weapons are hinted at so far and electro-weapons exist so their armor isn't a reach to assume it exists as well. They do look pretty cool and I'd say they still fit.

Also glad to hear Lissa! Underworld/Neutral Star Wars is something I've wanted to do for quite a while and is something I wish would get explored more in Star Wars.

Kadigan

If not them, then a Mirialan would work as well for a face claim that I have, which as far as I can tell is actually a statue of some kind.

As far as a character type, thing...since revamping from the idea  I had, maybe a hacker type?

Tolvo

I think the Nagai work though if you want to go Mirialan that's fine as well.

A hacker could be pretty useful to have. Star Wars is still pretty high tech and most things run on computers of some kind.

Always seeking 5E games.

Glad to see people are interested. If anyone has any questions or suggestions I'm very willing to chat and discuss things.

Tolvo

Glad to hear.

Something I was wondering, do people want to keep the Attributes and Skills system I currently have in place. I set it up to help with character creation, balancing characters, giving them focuses, and helping to direct players to diversify the types of characters they make. But I do wonder if it might be a bit too much. The RP is freeform it isn't about dice rolls and math but I wonder if people would rather it wasn't there.

I feel like it's either a system game or it's not. Trying to do half and half isn't going to satisfy anyone because both types of games serve completely different purposes. Having a basic frame work for saying what characters are good and bad at is fine if you want to keep people honest with their roleplaying, but if you're throwing numbers and skill trees into it then it might as well be a system game. Like are we going to be in situations where someone goes "I have 10 more charisma points than you, so your character should lose this argument"?
What a thrill...with silence and darkness through the night....

Request Thread

Tolvo

So after some feedback and reconsidering I've gotten rid of the ratings and numbers for things like skills and attributes. I've had people before want more structure for such things but it is true that it was a bit much for a freeform RP. Instead I've focused on just using personal judgement and not worrying about numbers. So people don't have to specify a rating for their skill levels or numbers for attributes and attributes are just a general character description. Skills I think are still handy to list but players don't have a set limit I'm hoping people can just use personal judgement.

I definitely don't want it to be about numbers vs numbers. The intent was more so for just thinking about how people would describe characters. Not "Well he said he'll eat raw eggs if you don't do this but his Charisma is really high so you're convinced" more so "Well my character has high charisma I should describe his argument in a compelling way."

But I think it's more clear and less confusing to get rid of the numbers and ratings. And people can just list skills without having to worry about having a 5 in a skill.

Thinking about a droid character. Not an assassin or battle droid. Maybe a reprogrammed labour/maintenance unit. Possibly came with the ship or bought by the crew and it eventually just started doing it's own thing. Or something else. Still thinking it all over.
Hi i'm a polymorphic alien who has taken the form of this signiature to have sex with your pupils, and by the smile on your face I can tell your enjoying it.

Tolvo

That could work pretty well. I did want to leave Droids open as an option. For labor Droids i'd keep in mind size as it might be hard to fit anywhere if the droid is taller than something like the KX series Droid. Cargo holds are typically bigger but if you ever want to fit in crew quarters for instance you'd want to be around human height or the size of large species but with difficulty like a Herglic.

Ollumhammersong

The droid would be something like this , at least this is the best current match to what's in my head.

It could be human sized or shorter or any height we want really.

Tolvo

Yep that looks like it'd fit for what you're describing. That specific model is a mining Droid. Though we could anyway just say it's whatever as long as it isn't something as well known as an R2 model I'm not gonna be too picky about images having to match whatever Droid we're talking about or creating as an OC. And a mining Droid is a form of labor Droid.

Ollumhammersong

I know it's a mining droid. I found the image through wookiepedia while searching through various droid varieties. More importantly its a droid model that existed in this time period. So I can work with it. And it has arms, because an astromech or utility droid would be boring.

Tolvo

To be fair a mining Droid would definitely do some boring. :P

#22
If it didn't have a personality beyond wanting to mine, you would be right. It would be equally dull if it was nothing more than a generic battle droid or medical droid. A few moments of high importance followed by a waiting for it to become relavent again.

I like this design mostly because, hands are nice to have. Its not locked into purpose by a rigid design so I have some flexibility with what it could do to contribute. And because it is a droid there is always the possibilities of fun, if experimental/jurryrigged hardware upgrades. A simpler base design keeps some options open in that regard.

Ollumhammersong

So I have a question. I assume we are all on the same ship, yes? Or are we galivanting around on our own? Do we have our own vessels, or are we meeting up together on the same world and 'by chance' hired for the same job?

Well that was going to depend on how players set up their characters and whether they want their characters to have a background together. The concept is the Brokers organization finding people suited for jobs and connecting them with clients, so everyone could get together by chance or could be a recognized crew that are being put in touch with clients depending on how the players want their character setup. As well if no one wants to be a pilot transport can be paid for, and certain jobs can offer transportation such as if they want the crew to guard a shipment from port to port or get somewhere they'll probably want to bring them aboard. And a contact could be a pilot as an NPC who ferries the players from place to place.
