Sure hope this isn't already a topic that I simply couldn't find.

Home Alone, Ghost and Independence Day are three of mine from that decade.

The only movies I can think of are Kevin Smith ones --

Clerks
Mallrats

Tyrus

Films from the 1990s just have that special somethin' about them, man. Maybe it was because that era felt so secure yet still indulgent, so we got a lot of weird and wonderful and over-the-top stuff as a result - that still maintained an element of art versus expendable Hollywood blockbuster of yesteryear (mind you, there were still a few of those). I doubt a lot of what became popular would ever get greenlit in today's age of comic book adaptations, reboots, remakes and... remakes of remakes.

I loved a lot of the action/sci-fi movies of the time for their shameless violence, bombastic plots, and larger-than-life characters. Bad Boys, Point Break, Ronin, Terminator 2, The Matrix, Total Recall, Under Siege, etc. Goldeneye is also still the best James Bond film ever.

Horror movies, too were so freaking good. Not the teen slasher sub-genre, but more of the thought-provoking stuff that still had genuine scares and great costumes and effects. People Under the Stairs is a underrated gem. From Dusk Till Dawn is Quentin Tarrantino's most overlooked film. Blade is genuinely the best vampire horror flick ever, before the sequels got too action-y. The Silence of the Lambs is still scary.

Don't get me started on the good shit that came out the animation feed. Toy Story, Lion King, Aladdin, Mulan, Princess Mononoke... damn son, got me all nostalgic.
Sex and death. They're different, but the same. To reach that final moment, that climax, you got to give up control - of your body, of your soul. And love? Well, if sex is sweet and death is bitter, love is both. Love will always and forever break your heart.

One of my favorite movie decades. Probably between 90's and 60's for my favorite. As another poster said there was a great balance of commercialism/popular appeal and artistic value.
