Magic Items

Magic Items with a letter in parenthisis after the item cost can only be used by a particular class.

(f): Fighting-Men only (m): Magicians only (p): Priests only (r): Rogues only (bard): Bards only

Acquiring a magic item freely through adventure, such as from a slain opponent or retreived from a dungeon, is worth 1xp per 5gp of the magic item's value. Purchased or gifted items never grant xp.

Potions can be made by magic users of 7th level, or by any character employing an alchemist. A magic user not employing an alchemist, or a non magic user employing an alchemist, take 50% longer to brew potions, and it is 50% more expensive. (adjust brewing time after adjusting cost). Brewing a potion costs 1/3 of the potion's gp value, and for every 50gp the potion costs to brew, it takes 1 day. Brewing a potion with the aid of an alchemist does not take a character's full attention, though it takes the alchemist's attention. Assassins of 9th level or higher can produce vials of poison without the help of an alchemist at full efficiency.

Scrolls can be scribed by 7th level magic users, 9th level clerics and mystics, or monks of any level. Scribing a scroll costs 15gp per spell level, and takes one day per spell level, during which the preparations cannot be interrupted. After putting in the neccesary time without interruptions, the scroll writer has a 10% chance per level of the spell to fail at scribing the scroll, minus twice the level of the character. If scribing the scroll fails, all material costs are wasted and the spellcaster must begin again.

Creating other sorts of magical items costs 1/2 of the item's value for materials, and 8 hours per 50gp of the item's final cost, plus an additional 8d8 hours. At the end of this process, the spellcaster must make a saving throw vs. magic. On a success, he produces a magic item. On a failure, he produces a cursed item. Regardless of the result, the spellcaster magically ages 1d4 years at the end of this proccess.

(cursed): This tag indicates the magic item is a cursed item, caused by a horrible mistake while trying to manufacture a magic item. Such items are never worth xp to acquire, and are very cheap to purchase. In a game granting starting xp and gold to PCs, a good aligned character may begin with 1 cursed item, a neutral character may begin with 2 cursed items, and an evil character may begin with 3 cursed items.

(artifact): This tag indicates the magic item is a divine creation, and cannot be made by the hands of man, though a cleric can sometimes pray to have these items granted to them. The item will have incredible power, but its use is guided by the diety who created it. In a game granting xp and extra gold to the PCs, a character may begin with only one artifact. Artifacts do not radiate magic.
