Town Square The City Center |
CITY LAYOUTROADSGomorra is bisected by three main roads – Main Street, Limbo Avenue, and Temptation Road. Other, smaller pathways branch off of these main thoroughfares, but more in town directions by the main walkways. Main runs east and west, Limbo runs southwest to northeast, and Temptation runs southeast to northwest, cutting Gomorra into six relatively equitable slices. At the central intersection of the three roads is the town ‘square.’ Members of the Collegium have petitioned the town to have the town square referred to as the ‘town hexagon,’ but the town’s population has steadfastly ignored them.
Town SquareThe Town Square has a number of buildings - the recently rebuilt Babel's Tower, formerly the Casino Morongo, as well as the Town Hall, Courthouse, Sheriff's Office & Jail, The 1st Bank of Gomorra, and the Town Clerk's office. The Town Hall is largely empty unless it's use has been specifically reserved for some occasion, but the Sheriff's Office usually has a deputy on site. The 1st Bank of Gomorra is open from ten in the morning until three in the afternoon. Construction of a town clock is underway next to the bank, but has stalled due to lack of funding, and some contention over the valuable real estate being used for a 'frivolous' purpose. The Town Clerk sees lively business - anyone registering a claim, seeking marriage, annulment, registering a death or birth, seeking permanent lodging (and thus registering their citizenship) or otherwise seeking a building permit must do so at the Town Clerk. The Courthouse nearby also sees regular business, though the majority of cases before it are public drunkenness and disorderly conduct hearings, which carry a nominal civil fee. ($10 to $50 dollars, depending on severity.) Town Square Attractions1st Bank of GomorraOwner: Sweetrock Mining Company Operator: Saul Scheinbaum, several tellers. Description: A well appointed building with a smaller storefront, front room of the 1st Bank of Gomorra is a closely boxed in room with a single cage and a teller sitting behind bars for most of the hours of the day. A single door leads off into more lavish offices and to the safe room. The 1st Bank is willing to extend a loan to home owners and business owners without much question, or any one with a strike that provides a regular income. Those with a regular income can receive smaller loans, as well. Those without tangible assets to offer as collateral are treated more dubiously. Interest rates are generally fair, but also tend to rise when minorities and ferners are concerned. Anyone with an Outlaw background will not receive a loan. Anyone with a Renown background MAY receive a loan, but Saul is less willing to place his faith in word-of-mouth over hard assets. Insurance on small businesses can be assessed, at a cost of approximately ten percent of a business's monthly income. Babel's TowerOwner: Abraham SolomonOperator: Abraham Solomon Range of Quality: Description: The exterior of the newly constructed Babel's Tower has been freshly painted, after a week of rapid construction at considerable expense. Simple construction, largely unornamented, with an exterior dominated by a wraparound deck on both floors of the saloon/brothel/hotel and casino. The tower's upper levels and roof still show signs of construction, and building supplies are piled high atop the roof. White windows face the town center, with simple curtains, and there are a number of benches to observe passerby to the hotel. The insignia of the Tower, a large white tower painted on on the building's overhead sign, has been described as a 'monumental white phallus,' by the more articulate members of the city. Still, the hotel is clean looking and elegant, without much trace of excess artifice. Simple wallpaper, a sturdy bar, and a large number of tables and chairs. Unlike the Casino Morongo, much of the gaming and prostitution that takes place in the Tower is kept away from the main foyer, in an effort to maintain the illusion of respectability. Beaded curtains block the view to the dens of sin and vice, but glimpses of naked, dancing flesh and gambling at the tables are briefly visible whenever someone passes through the curtains.Drinks and food of reasonable quality at affordable prices are both offered twenty four hours a day. High quality liquor is available on request, and upstairs are a number of clean, comfortable rooms, as well as two elegant suites that lack the opulence of the Golden Mare or a similar establishment. Babel's Tower isn't trying to be the most elitist establishment in the city - but it also veers shy of being uncomfortably cheap. The girls are the familiar faces of Casino Morongo, though most seem uncertain about the new proprietor. Most are exquisitely talented, but have been directed to split their time between entertaining on their feet and on their backs. In the foyer, a small stage has been erected, and live music can be heard on any night of the week - complete with a working piano. The atmosphere is comfortable rather than sinful, drinks are strong and affordable, and the Babel's Tower will be crowded on hot nights and populated by Gomorran citizens around the clock. The Clock TowerOwner: City of Gomorra Operator: Under Construction Description: The Clock Tower of Gomorra was intended to rise above the civil buildings in the town square, although construction on it has halted for the fourth time. The first time was after it was discovered and published by the Gomorran Gazette that the Collegium was intending to build a 'free-standing oscillating chronometer' in place of a watch tower, and harsh words were exchanged at the Council meeting immediately called. The second was after an independent philanthropist responsible for the continued construction was discovered to have taken the sum of the collections raised for the Clock Tower and fled East - along the with funds for a soup kitchen and an orphanage for Gomorra. Sweetrock offered to pick up the bill for the Clock Tower, but the tower's exiting framework was burnt to the ground by angry miners before Sweetrock had laid a single plank. The fourth attempt, a donation of the Whateley family, has met with more success, but construction has halted since Dolores Whateley's imprisonment. CourthouseOwner: Judge Warwick Operator: "Blue" Description: The Courthouse has an outer foyer with several benches, a court room with several benches for those wishing to witness a trial, and the Judge's quarters off the court room itself. Judge Warwick is found sleeping here as often as he is in his own home, and the levying of various civil fees for many routine disturbances and disorderly conducts keeps the courtroom busy - as do various litigation between miners for property rights. While violence is commonplace in Gomorra, murder trials are not - in large part because the majority of men guilty of murder attempt to resist arrest by force. Ever since J.P. Coleman began to institute a practice where lawmen made arrests for capital crimes in pairs - or more, depending on the reputation of the criminal in question - the number of deceased criminals has steadily outstripped the number of deceased lawmen. The Courthouse is always clean and well kept. The raised desk the Judge sits at is usually decorated by a human skull, with an obvious bullet hole through the front and back of the cranium. This is all that remains of the last constable who worked for Judge Warwick, the rest of his body entombed on Dead Man's Rest. The constable's skull is kept on the desk as a reminder to Judge Warwick to be on his guard, and that Gomorra is a dangerous place, no matter how safe it seems. Fountain - WIP
