Miner's Peril Southeast Temptation |
MINER’S PERILSoutheast Temptation runs from the town square out to Soddom, and 'Miner's Peril' carries all the shops a miner could need - and all the seedy, cheap attractions a miner could lose his ghost rock and fundament in. In addition to the tawdry entertainments and cheap gear available along the row, Southeast Temptation has one of the most important buildings in Gomorra - the Miner's Union House. Sweetrock miners are forbidden to unionize, but the independent miners put intense pressure on miners new to the area to join; for the most part the protection they offer comes in the form of bounties placed upon criminals and outlaws post mortem. In addition to finding independent miners willing to work claims, the Union House also serves as the rabblerousers podium - several posses, lynch mobs, and 'vigilance committees' have formed from Union House, and when sufficiently enraged, the collected miners are effectively immune to the whims of the Law Dogs. While these vigilance committees have been defused by J.P. Coleman in the past, the town always lives in fear of a time when a mob begins to grow outside the Union Hall, and a hundred men with pistols and dynamite decided to make their demands known to Gomorra as a whole. MINER'S PERIL ATTRACTIONSBlacksmithOwner: Benjamin Turly Operator: Benjamin Turly, Kit Marson Range of Quality: El Cheapo - Fine Description: Benjamin Turly took over the Blacksmith after an accident made sure the last owner wouldn't be able to craft again. Since he took over, he has learned a great deal about his trade and been able to increase the quality of goods he makes for the people of Gomorra. His shop is broken into two part, the front room that his customers are welcome to make their purchases or their commissions and the back that contains his forge and equipment. Kit, Benjamins assistant, has taken over much of the day-to-day needs of Gomorra, making large batches of nails and many other useful items. Neither of the men are particularly chatty with their customers as their work keeps them quite busy. Bloodsport Arena - WIP

Owner: Operator: Range of Quality: Description: Den of Eastern DelightsOwner: “Mr. Lee” Operator: “Mr. Lee” Quality: El Cheapo Description: The Den of Eastern Delights offends many socialites in the city. It offers the fruit of the poppy, cheap, and the soiled doves are all of Chinese origin. Few stir out of their opium slumber, even for a willing customer. All but the most hard hearted patrons leave with a sense of guilt and shame, but for most of the miners this is one of the few affordable establishments. Equipment Shop - WIP

Description: A rickshaw building that looks well tended if poorly designed, the Gomorra Volunteer Fire Brigade is built adjacent to Bob's Fix It Shop. The two buildings actually share an internal door, and the Fire Chief of the Brigade is also the owner and operator of the Fix-It Shop, inherited from his father. Teddy Howell runs a clean shop, fixes all manner of broken goods around town, and mostly keeps to himself. In the rare event of a fire, he drives a wagon out of the Fire Brigade with a water pump mounted to the back, finds the closest man he can to spray the building, and dives within to pull anyone alive free from the burning wreckage. Owner: Operator: Range of Quality: Description: Jones’ Mercantile & Trade**Owner: Jaelyn Scot-Jones Operator: Jaelyn Scot-Jones Quality: El Cheapo-Fine (The majority of goods are Average, but Fine versions and cheaper versions are available) Description: Jones' Mercantile & Trade is located not too far from the town square on the Southeast Temptation spoke of Gomorra's main roads. At first glance it seems out of place in the area known as Miner’s Peril, but Thommy Jones - who insisted on quality workmanship - had built for home and livelihood. During the daylight hours, it IS home to more than one gaggle of Gomorra’s own; mostly, the Whippersnapper Express, a motley bunch of orphans who manage well as the town’s unofficial post & parcel delivery system. The Whippersnappers tend to congregate in a small side yard that contains the entrance to the private residence. This entrance opens to a small sitting area and dining room with stairs leading up to the living space on the second floor. On the ground floor in the back, there is also a kitchen, separated by a sturdy wall from the store's delivery and storage area. The wrap around porch makes for a good impromptu meeting place, the side of the building is littered with years worth of tacked up notices, official and otherwise. Most days will find a spattering of miners and menfolk spinning tales and sharing news, and women - both wives and otherwise - taking a break for a bit of gossip and news of their own sort. Jones’ offers anything a miner needs, including sticks, caps, fuses, nitro, plungers, picks, axes, shovels, thick trousers, backpacks, canteens, etc AND is the only establishment in Gomorra authorized to sell explosives. With his family in mind, Thommy also stocked in a vast assortment of dry goods; bolts of wool & cotton fabrics, sewing notions, basic pre-made clothes, bonnets, liniments, soaps, flour, sugar, salt, coffee, chicory, oolong tea, sweets, and cured meat - namely bacon. On occasion, there will be a bushel or two of fresh fruit, a rare treat for the Whippersnappers. A specially made steel room is buried beneath the building. It is here that the legal explosives can be found along with other sundry items. The door is very secure with a massive lock and only one key, kept on the storekeepers person at all times. Leather & Saddle ShopOwner: Charles Beck Operator: Charles Beck Quality: Poor - Average Description: Charles has opened a shop that, in Gomorra, is a difficult one to keep going. Horses are not brought into Gomorra often as they have a hard time going over the bridges so he doesn't sell as many saddles as he'd like. As for his leather goods, he has had to get quite creative about what kind of animal hides he uses for his products. As expected, his shop has slowly become less and less attractive as repairs and upkeep have started to fall a little behind. The wood planks that form his shop are starting to show wear and tear and the inside is a little dusty and cluttered. Minor's Union HouseOwner: The Respectful Brotherhood of Gomorran Miners Operator: Tom “Niner” Rumrage Description: One of the few buildings made partly from stone in Gomorra, the Union House was originally little more than a small square building but over the years has expanded considerably, firm wooden extensions supplementing the rocky core. The most notable addition is a large three-sided meeting hall opening out onto “Miner's Peril”. From the elevated speaking platform more than one firebrand instigator had whipped a crowd of miners into a fury, preaching about how they have been exploited and abused. The Respectful Brotherhood of Gamorran Miners (more commonly referred to as the Miner's Union” or simply “the Union”) is currently headed by Tom “Niner” Rumrage, a huge, hulking man with big hands, a bushy beard and a deep, resonant voice. Despised by Sweetrock and loved by the miners there are still questions about how successful his long tenure has been. On one hand he has been effective in keeping independent miners and mines in business (although many may grumble as to what level of “independence” a miner truly has when under the thumb of the Union) and through avoiding any open violent confrontations he has kept his trump card.... organizing the miners into a wild mob... as a powerful deterrent to any trying to break the Union's power. On the other hand, life for an independent miner is still grim, dangerous and far too often short and despite his successes in frustrating Sweetrock he has only frustrated them; attempts to organize Sweetrock miners or even hurt the company's profit margins have met with little success. Niner has certainly made a comfortable enough living off his time as the organizer of the Union, but he’s far from wealthy. A veteran of the Gold Rush of ’49, he’s too old to work as a miner himself, and a little too stubborn and thickheaded to make a go as a businessman. The majority of the miners are so impoverished that asking for even cents from them would bar their membership in the Union; in lieu of money, Niner usually asks for their vocal support in times of protest. It is the independent miners who’ve made a stake and earned some wealth who fund the Union, to allow them a collective bargaining voice against Sweetrock and in city matters. At votes and in Town Hall meetings, Niner is well known to speak on behalf of the rank and file miners that are Gamorra’s lifeblood, and his word is usually respected. The Nasty Doc'sOwner: Doc Viktor Meisters Operator: Doc Viktor Meisters Description: Doc Meisters - the 'Nasty Doc' of Gomorra - has an shuttered office front that once belonged to a rotgut whiskey distillery, before the former owner poisoned himself with his own wares. The interior is lit with lamps, and ghoulish instruments of surgery cover the walls and shelves. Much of the floor is stained red with blood. Meisters himself is a former battlefield surgeon, a man who's expertise had been hardened across decades in surgical tents on three continents. Meisters is actually very, very good at what he does - he's saved more than one life when others would have called it impossible, but he's got a gallows sense of humor and a certain disregard when it comes to the pain of his patients. Treatment by Doc Meisters lacks anything like bedside manner, but he saves more patients than he loses - no mean feat in the day and age he practices medicine. New Moon Saloon - WIP

Owner: Operator: Range of Quality: Description: Scared Stiff SaloonOwner: Ethan "Southpaw" Huss Operator: Ethan "Southpaw" Huss Quality: El Cheapo Description: When you're down to your last dollar and no other place in Gomorra will have you and even those in the tent city of Soddom turn up their nose it's still probably not a good idea to wander into the Scared Stiff Saloon or “Stiffys” as people regularly call it. Ethan Huss had once been one of the most ornery miners in the area before an argument with a particularly stubborn rock face. He lost the argument and his right arm for his troubles. Not that that improved his mood or made him any less of a mean-spirited cuss. There's not much call for a one-armed miner in the Great Maze and so Ethan went into the only industry he had any experience of, saloons. Unfortunately his experience of saloons generally consisted of getting blind drunk and starting fights and it was no surprise when the Scared Stiff Saloon turned into the least reputable establishment in an area known for its less than reputable establishments. The atmosphere echoed the name; a dark and gloomy place where the worst of the worst in Gomorra came together. When nowhere else would have a person they found themselves in Stiffys, those too vicious for normal Gomorran life but too stupid for the gangs that offered home to other such miscreants. The sort of people who would slit a man's throat for the last coin in his pocket... and then lose the coin. If one could get past the general stench of the place they'd find an almost palpable smell of fear in the air, the sense that violence was never more than a moment away. The Slaughterhouse - WIP

Owner: Operator: Range of Quality: Description: St. Martin's ChapelOwner: Father Esteban OrtegaOperator: Father Esteban Ortega, Father Juan Navarro Description: St Martin's Chapel, the only chapel in the city of Gomorra, serves a dual function. The church bells as an early warning system in case of attack, fire, or important meetings. More often, however, it is used by those seeking religious counsel or prayer service. The church can seat thirty parishioners, or allow fifty to stand during a crowded service. Most Sundays, Father Ortega holds three services, but near major holidays he often holds six. The church has Catholic trappings, but most of the murals are in a Central and South American artistic style, over more classically European depictions of the saints, disciples, and Savior. Father Ortega is an elderly Mexican man, soft spoken but patient and caring. He focuses most of his energies on tending to the community, and his services are known for insightful reflection on the qualities of mercy over fire and brimstone sermonizing. Father Navarro, three decades younger, is considerably more energetic, and has a beautiful singing voice. Both men are well liked and well respected in the community. The first services of the day is a Catholic Mass, entirely in Latin, and the other services are performed in a rather non-denominational fashion, welcoming Christians of all stripes. The second service is held in Spanish, and the third in English. The Mission House - WIP
