SIOUX UNION

HISTORY

Six months ago, a group of some hundred Sioux, Lakota, Crow, Apache and other tribesmen appeared outside of Gomorra, along the banks of the mainland to the East of Gomorra. They setup teepees and began to live within view of the town. Prior to their arrival, the periodic 'red-skin' had been an uncommon sight in Gomorra - an occasional scout or trader would try their hand at mining or making a life in the town, but a well-armed camp was unheard of. They were well armed, and politely rebuffed offers to 'move along,' and the issue was never pushed.

Occasionally, the 'Sioux Union' hails all the way from Deadwood, but their purpose in Gomorra is unknown. They occasionally send members of the tribe in to trade for various goods, providing food and furs in return. Some of the townsfolk in Gomorra have even been able to establish semi-regular trade with them, although it takes a careful hand and a good deal more humility than most are willing to shows the 'reds.'

Their Chief, Joseph Eyes-Like-Rain, has occasionally met with outsiders. He's described as an elderly man in his seventies, soft spoken and kindly. He has not been seen outside his teepee.

CHIEF

Joseph Eyes-Like-Rain

Chief Joseph Eyes-Like-Rain, Chief of the Sioux Union

Joseph Eyes-Like-Rain is a Lakota, but has been involved with politics in the Sioux Union for decades, long before there was a 'Sioux Union.' A peacemaker and respected wicasa, he counseled Sitting Bull against his war with the Union, and is one of the leading advocates of the Old Ways movement, though he does not force his beliefs upon his followers. Joseph is a wise and venerable shaman, forced into the position of Chief for the alliance of Native Americans that have come to Gomorra.

Well aware of the delicacy of the alliance and the fragile relationship between so many tribes and so many disparate points of view, Joseph spends much of his time in counsel with the many advisers from the different tribes. His presence has allowed longtime rivals to set aside their difference, though the path is not always easily walked. Joseph hopes the alliance can act to all tribes as proof of the power of their cooperation.

The people of Gomorra know little of the intentions of the Sioux Union. Some few have managed to make casual acquaintance and begin trade, but many others fear the intentions of the 'savage reds.' Multiple petitions have been put before the town council, the mayor, and the Law Dogs to evict the unwanted Natives, and fears of rape and scalping circulate every day. Rumours buzz of lone travelers ambushed by the Sioux and tossed off the mesas into the water below, and despite the fact that there has never been a hostile confrontation, many of the residents consider them a greater blight than the 'Chinese menace.'

WICASA

John Bloody Knife

John Bloody Knife, Son of Joseph

John Bloody Knife earned his name while fighting off US soldiers as they encroached on Sioux territory. He is the embodiment of a Sioux Brave and hates the white man with a passion. His belief in his father and the visions he has, John has attempted to soften his stance against the white man.

His concern about his father and Chief has been growing as the man gets older and learns more of the white mans evil. He is ready to attack to protect his father and keep the white man from corrupting Gomorra beyond saving. His desire to attack rather than waiting has created something of a divide among the Union. Some of the younger members are looking forward to action and hope that John will be Chief soon though none wish Joseph to die.

John strives to keep their traditions alive even as other members seek to understand and even blend in with the white man. It troubles him deeply when he sees the traditions being tossed aside in favor of the 'white man way'. To combat this, he works hard to have a separation between the the Union and Gomorra. Inside the Union and while together, they all uphold dress and tradition. Within the city, he doesn't argue with the 'white man way'.

Singing Feather

Singing Feather, Sioux Union Shaman

Singing Feather joined the Sioux Union from the Cheyenne for reasons that only Joseph knows but, after a short time in the Union, she had become a valued member. Her quiet and observant nature has helped calm some of the more youthful braves and has been a voice of reason. She never speaks unless she is certain of her words and, despite her youth and relative inexperience, has become one of the most heeded members of the Union save Joseph.

Since joining the union, she has been deeply troubled by the things she has seen. Gomorra is in grave danger but she has no idea how to communicate the dire situation to the white man that both parties will understand. She is also aware that taking any great action too soon will provoke a war that neither the Union nor the white man are prepared to deal with.

Both Joseph and John Bloody Knife are incredibly protective over their young shaman and she rarely travels into Gomorra. When she does, it is with at least one other member of the Union and she is not left alone for any reason while in the white man city. Even for short trips outside of the Union territory that wouldn't bring her into Gomorra are taken with body guards.

SHAMAN/WAR CHIEF

Tioga Joe

Tioga Joe, Sioux Union War Chief

Unlike many of members of the Sioux Union, Tioga Joe has quite a reputation. He is well known, even through Gomorra, for his battle prowess. He is a warrior without fear and fights as though nothing can kill him. He has survived so many 'hopeless' encounters that even he has become convinced that he cannot die on the field of battle.

Given more free reign than some of the younger, less experienced braves, Tioga roams the maze to further hone his abilities. He has a great reputation for saving people in distress and never harming an innocent.

He has a strong personal code of honor and has never strayed from it - no matter the circumstances. He will not bend on his code and, should the Sioux Union engage with the evils of Gomorra, he will fight his heart out but he will uphold his beliefs. Not all of the white man is to blame for those that have chosen evil and he will not hold them all accountable.

Wise Cloud

Wise Cloud, Sioux Union Shaman

Wise Cloud joined the Sioux Union at the urging of his tribe. He had been sent quickly to join Joseph. He not only believes in the Chief's visions, he knows them to be true. He is also aware that there are more threats to the Sioux Union. Threats that Joseph is blind to. He was sent to keep an eye on those as well.

He is deeply attached to the Sioux Union and protecting the fragile peace. If hostilities break out between any of the threats, the Sioux Union could be in far more trouble than they imagine.

In order to keep the Union glued together, he often acted as a mediator between the various peoples. He also has worked to understand aspects of the white man. While he is a firm believer in his people's way of life, there is nothing wrong with how a cowboy dresses and he has adapted the style with his own touches.

Walks-in-Footsteps

Walks-in-Footsteps, Sioux Union Diplomat

Walks-in-Footsteps had been chosen by Joseph to act as a diplomat between the peoples of Gomorra and the Sioux Union. He accepted the position without hesitation. He had always been curious about the white man and, unlike some of the other members of the Sioux Union, he didn't believe that all white men were evil.

Arriving inside the city, there were tensions but those were laid to rest when the Mayor greeted him. After a long, drawn out meeting, his task was accepted and he was offered lodgings in the city. It didn't take long for Walks-in-Footsteps to realize that there was much that he didn't know about the white man. Attempting to adapt to their ways and understand them better, he gave himself an easier name that blended better with the people: Walker. Even as he struggled to adapt, Walker became quite fond of the white man comforts. He liked his bed, the food and drink and even found himself enjoying the clothing.

Walker moves between Gomorra and the Sioux Union frequently to report in and gather further instructions. The Shamans almost always have questions that they want answered and he has proven himself capable of investigating without creating too many waves. His skills are not appreciated by all of the Sioux Union and several of them believe that he is becoming to close to the white man. They are concerned that, should the situation become hostile, he would hesitate to defend his people. He has fought to balance his reputation with his people with the task that Joseph and Singing Feather have asked of him.

WARRIOR

Little Running Bear

Little Running Bear, Sioux Union Brave

Little Running Bear had to travel the longest and had quite an adventure leading him to the Sioux Union. For him, the trip was entirely worth it as he believed wholeheartedly in the visions of Joesph.

He is younger than many of the others in the Sioux Union and eager to further prove himself in battle. While he does believe in the visions and he knows that Joseph is wise, he is losing patience with the wait. There were many evils in Gomorra to fight and, by waiting to attack those evils, the Sioux Union was allowing them to grow stronger.

Little Running Bear has never stepped foot into Gomorra and, if he had it his way, he wouldn't until the Sioux Union was prepared for battle. Instead, he occupies his time hunting and providing protection for the smaller villages and ranches on the outskirts of Gomorra. He has a good reputation with those that live in those places as his efforts have kept more than one family from starving.

Eagle Rock

Eagle Rock, Sioux Union Brave

Eagle Rock's decision to join the Sioux Union surprised both Joseph and John as he hailed from an enemy tribe. He had no trouble setting aside his personal differences with the Sioux because the visions that Joseph had scared the bejeezus out of Eagle Rock. He believed in the visions enough to leave his tribe without their blessing in order to follow the the shaman's visions.

The tension between Eagle Rock and John Bloody Knife have begun to cool some. Eagle Rock has had to fight harder than anyone else to begin to earn the trust of the Chief's son but has been managing to do so.

Much like Little Running Bear, he has never stepped foot in Gomorra. Some of that is due to a distaste for the activities of some in the city and part of it is because John Bloody Knife still likes to keep his eyes on him.
