I had an idea for an Evangelion roleplay, but I've never initiated a group game before, so for now I just want to see who would be interested.

It could be based on Evangelion proper (Either the original series or the Rebuild, though I'm only loosely familiar with Rebuild) or Angelic Days (though again, I'd have to do some research/reading as I'm not an expert).

The obvious choices for characters would be Shinji (who I'd play, natch  ;) ), Rei and Asuka in a cutesy (or not so cutesy) love triangle-type game.  We could add Mari if anyone's interested in her, Kaoru if it seems unfair with only one guy (Shinji/Kaoru isn't a relationship I'd be opposed to exploring, either), and even Toji, Kensuke, and Hikaru if enough people are interested.  Other possible characters would be Misato, Ritsuko, Kaji, Gendo.... it's a huge series with tons of characters.  I'd want to get the eva pilots set first, though.

I'd really be interested in exploring the relationships of these young people that are forced to fight to defend the Earth, and how they have to learn to trust each other, rely on each other... they're like they're own tiny society, and there's sure to be all sorts of tangled webs going on.

Oh, and since ageplay don't forget that since ageplay is of course a no-no, it goes without saying that this game would take place in an alternate universe where the threat of the Angels is nice enough to wait two years until they're nice and legal.

Some fetishes I'd like to incoprorate would be some light femdom (with Asuka, natch), plugsuits, m/f/f(/f if Mari gets involved) f/f, m/m (if we get a Kaoru), harem... This is just me spit-balling ideas though (and, admittedly, indulging in a bit of self-centrism), and I'd be more than willing to arrange more concrete details with anyone who's interested.

Primary character list (from the Angelic Days Wikipedia entry):
Shinji Ikari - Shinji Ikari is the male protagonist of the series. He is timid, quiet, and easily influenced by his peers. He is very much like his original persona, however he is more sociable and friendly than before. Shinji is also a childhood friend to Asuka Langley Soryu.
Asuka Langley Soryu - Asuka Langley Soryu is a redhead with fiery temper, and although friends with Shinji she often torments him. Her rage is especially violent in the beginning of the series: she is openly hostile with Kaworu and splashes boiling water on Shinji in a jealous fit during a cooking class. However, she cares deeply for her friends, and will aid or defend them when she is able. She has appointed herself as Shinji's chaperone and has a clear sense of right and wrong. Although she can be demanding, in truth she doesn't want to burden anyone or feel useless, especially to her parents or Shinji, similar to the original character's feeling of inferiority in the anime series.
Rei Ayanami - (NB: This is probably the most significant change from EVA proper to Angelic Days) Rei Ayanami is an excitable extrovert, the polar opposite of her original persona. However, she is socially inept and clueless as how to perform simple tasks such as cracking an egg open. She is disliked by the girls of her class for "flirting" with boys and wearing her old uniform rather than buying the school's own regulation clothes. Flashbacks also reveal that she was given positive encouragement and praise by those who raised her.
Kaoru Nagisa - As in the anime, Kaoru Nagisa has a mysterious past that Nerv officials work to uncover. However, despite the lack of official records, Shinji remarks that he and Kaoru have been friends for about a decade, or as long as he has known Asuka. In particular, Kaoru and Shinji often perform music together (Shinji on cello, with Kaoru on violin). Also, Kaoru has what is termed an unusual "fondness" for Shinji, and sometimes appears to be part of the "love triangle" around him. His appearances in both Shinji and Gendo's story arcs strongly hints at a deep connection with the Angels.

I'm always interested in RPing games based on the finest anime series of all time... though I have only seen the series and the two alternate/real ending movies and dipped into a few doujins. I've run a couple of group games before but unsuccessfully, sadly.

Where in the series timeline would you be setting the game? If Kaworu is involved then its at the very end by which time Asuka is pretty much unplayable as she's descended into suicidal self-loathing by then... I was never that comfortable with Kaworu and my games were set in the early 'happy times' around the 'Magma Diver' episode.

I'm not sure that just playing the characters from the series will give a very satisfying game though, my games were based on a separate premise I picked up from a doujin. As the series itself unfolds I don't see Shinji doing anything remotely masculine with either of the female pilots, possibly the most believable scenario involving him would be a seduction by Misato.

How close to canon did you intend to play Shinji?

I'm open to ideas though. I played Asuka in a past game but could play Misato or Rei instead depending on what and where the game was doing/going.

Well, because it's such a messed up show, it doesn't need to be explicitly canon, and the Angelic Days is always an acceptable alternate.

It'd be an AU game so we could in theory futz with the plot quite a bit, especially in regards to when what characters come in, but in regards to characterization I'd want to keep things pretty close to canon

Then, of course, there's always the fluffier Angelic Days AU or variations thereupon, which would probably fit this idea just as well if not better.  The big things to keep in mind would be that they're a very close group of three-eight friends, all with a mix of feelings for one another (which can be as complicated or simple a web as we could all agree on).

If you wanted to go with Angelic Days that might be better, its certainly a lot more fun, at least initially, since most people are much more normal. I'd be interested in playing Rei if you chose to go down that route.

I'd certainly have to read up a bit more on Angelic Days (that is, I'd have to actually read Angelic Days), but if that one seems like the best choice then it finally gives me an excuse to do so.  If we do go that route, it would obviously be much less dark, but I'd still want to explore not just romantic relationships with Shinji (though there would of course be plenty of that), but also non-canon relationships between everyone else.  If it helps, I also wouldn't be opposed to outlining some of the story ahead of time, so everyone would be on the same page, so to speak.  And if someone's interested in playing Mari, we'd need to write her in.

Also, hopefully this idea will start getting some more hits.

I don't know who Mari is... you've mentioned her a couple of times but I've never heard of her. There's Mana from... um... Girlfriend of Steel I think it was...? Not sure.

Angelic Days, if you've not read it, is a doujin based on part of episode 26 - that "one possible alternate reality" Shinji experiences/dreams about where all the kids are normal and just go to the same school, with Misato as their teacher. Its fluffy and light hearted and comedic and both Rei and Asuka have romantic intentions towards Shinji but all the other school kids have roles too - Kensuke, Shoji, Hikari, Kaworu (he's there as a normal kid), so there's lots going on and the whole Evangelions and Angels bit occurs later in a rather different way. Its all the familiar faces in a semi-familiar setting but much more light-hearted and with a bit of a twist.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neon_Genesis_Evangelion:_Angelic_Days

Although ADV Manga published all volumes in English I have only ever found 3 1/2 volumes online. If you already have some ideas of your own though, this may all be irrelevant unless you can fit them into Angelic Days' setting.

Well, I do have my own ideas, but I don't want to shoehorn people into them.  It'd basically be the Angelic Days setting in that romance is center stage with the angels just being touched on a bit.  In regards to Shinji, there'd definitely be love-triangle/-square/-dodecahedron/-6-dimensional hypercube situation going on between him, Rei, Asuka, Mari end even Kaworu if we could get a player interested in it.  If everyone was okay with playing it that way, then I'd be fine with playing it more like a Love Hina/Ai Yori Aoshi type game, but I also wouldn't be opposed to, rather than an "everyone trying jump one guy" situation, an "everyone trying to jump everyone else."

Mari is from the ReBuild of Evangelion.  "Mari Illustrious Makinami" is her full name.

Okay, I realize we have another game that goes in fits and starts, but I would actually be very intrigued to play Kaworu in a game like this... If it's the Angelic Days scenario, we'd be calling him "Kaoru," though. ^_^

Fantastic!  We'd just be waiting on an Asuka, then, to have the primary cast filled out.

Hmm...Evangelion... definitely is one of the best Anime of all time. I must join!

Though, unfortuantely, it seems you've taken up both Shinji and Kaoru, but them aside, I wouldn't mind playing in a Kaji, or maybe Gendo/Fuyutsuki to sort of provide GM-style plot.

And, to deal with your Kaoru (I agree it's spelled like that) plot insert deal, you could also play this game in the Rebuild right after the 2.0 movie, when Kaoru decends from the moon, etc. Since, by then, all the characters you've mentioned have gathered, including Mari, and it still have the psychological mindfucks and deep character development that honestly isn't as present in the Angelic Days series. Just an idea (and to those why haven't watched Rebuild, go watch it now!).

I'd be more comfortable sticking with the earlier material. I haven't seen 2.0 or any of the live action stuff and would actually prefer not to.

Or I'm happy going off on a weird light hearted tangent with a doujinesque atmosphere to completely open it up.

I got the impression ABitOffTheWall (hell, sorry I can't go around calling you that! Can't we shorten that to something? Please? *chuckles*)... I get the impression he wants to stick mostly to the schoolkids in which case there's Toji or Kensuke, Toji especially has an almost equal role to any other male in the Angelic Days doujin and also if you wanted to take two parts he and Kensuke work together as quite a team with Toji pulling some scams like dropping things near girls so then bend to pick them up while Kensuke is in a nearby bush with his camcorder filming the resulting fanservice shot...

I'm with Hai on the setting. I don't much mind whether it's in the context of the Angels or just a school dramedy, I'm just looking forward to playing an enigmatic, charismatic pansexual high school student. ;D My first M/M possibility. O_O

See, here's the thing: Original Eva is extremely fucked up.  What I like about Angelic Days is that it keeps the action of the angel fights (kinda) while dropping the pseudo-Freudian crap that made the last few episodes of the series nigh-unwatchable.

Now don't get me wrong, Eva proper is fantastic, otherwise I wouldn't have wanted to do an RP based on it in the first place, but I think that for an RP, I'd much rather go with Angelic Days.  The character relationships are much more convenient, and no one dies.

Haibane's got it right about the kids, too.  I'd much rather Toji and Kensuke get a player before Kaji, Gendo, or Fuyutski.

And you're right, my tag is a bit long.  "Wall" will do just fine.

And Karma, I think this game would/could have a bit of an Everyone is Bi (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EveryoneIsBi) slant to it, though Shinji wouldn't necessarily realize it until Kaoru makes his move.

We can use AD as a basis and inject more action into it if we like. I'm up for that.

Dibs on either Makoto Hyuga or Kozo Fuyutsuki.

Agreed on AD as a basis. We can take it from there...

Agreed on the bi slant too, as Karma will know... ReixAsuka is the hottest pairing in anime anyway *drools*

And if people have not read AD they should do since its not at all EVA as we know it.

Given that AD is so off the wall and Misato is the kids homeroom teacher I don't see an issue with bending the roles of other NERV staff to suit the players available. If someone really wants to play Kaji, he could be a teacher, likewise Makoto. Of course it sorta stops being EVA at some point since we've changed the characters personalities so much and their setting but...well... anyway I'm wondering how else to incorporate so many male players.

Damn we need an Asuka...

Here's the thing: I can't stress enough how much I'd rather get the kids assigned characters before the adults.  This is also my first time organizing a group game and, based on personal experience that Karma can attest to, I'm starting to think it'd be better to keep it small.  After that ultra-ambitious first post it probably seems like a weird back-tracking, from what I've seen, big games are trouble even with an experienced GM.  And, as I've mentioned, Eva is really fucking complicated.  The more people, the more fucking, and the more complications.

Obviously I'm open to solutions as I don't want to have to seem like an asshole by turning people away after being all excited about a huge game in that first post up there, but there are as many advantages to keeping it small as there to a big game, if not more.

I also agree on AD as a basis, and it wouldn't be bad to work in more Angel fights, as well as aspects of the Eva proper that may or may not be present in AD like (and someone else would have to confirm this for me, as I'm getting my hands on some of the series today) Shinji living with Misato, Asuka (who we still need!) living with both of them, etc.

Also, I should have mentioned this earlier, but I have an enormous Eva-specific fetish: Plugsuits! (as seen in this fantastic manga: http://lu.scio.us/hentai/albums/plug-suit-fetish-1-2-4/page/1).  Things needn't go as far as they do in the manga, but I definitely think a touch of plugsuit fetishism is a good thing.

I understand Wall. It is your game, organise it how you want. I wish I knew another female who was an EVA fan on the site who could take Asuka but I don't - does anyone? Just to add another spanner in the works I'm one of those people who isn't comfortable with cross-gender play so if we got an Asuka player she would need to be female. Sorry about being wierd like that.

And yes, plugsuits are hot *wants one with two internal dildos fitted*

I understand Wall. It is your game, organise it how you want.

See, I tend to not think like that.  As soon as someone shows interest in my ideas (which my self-deprecating side tends to regard as charity) I feel I owe it to them to at least hear them out.  So, while ideally I'd like to incorporate more characters, let me say here that I will reserve the right to limit it to the pilots, and probably just treat the grown-ups as NPCs or something.

AND, while normally I'm okay with player and character gender not matching up, Asuka has a special place in my heart as my first anime crush, so for no other reason I'm going to agree with Haibane on that issue.
