Hi Guys:

I'm having a lot of trouble with updating my Hell notebook running Windows 10... Actually, two issues, but I finally figured out a simple way to fix that one.

Every time I try to update the computer, literally every time that I get a successful update, The computer either goes into tablet mode, or kills my speakers.

I can fix the tablet mode, until the next update, but all I can find for the speakers is a list of directions 25 steps long, in geek speak that tells me to go into this sub, sub, sub, sub, sub section of the settings to click this box, or that button to go into more sub, sub, sub sections to enter a magical code into a dialog box, jump on one foot while yelling, "Steve Job was right! Microsoft is a joke!"

Well, not really, but you get the idea. This issue is of some serious importance because, being blind, without sound, I have a big paperweight. I literally can't do a thing on it.

So, I'm begging for a solution; some way to get my speakers back and keep them. I've gone into the folders that evereveryone on the tech sites tells me to, but there's no speakers there, nothing. I have a set of headphones and that's it. So, please, simple directions to fix the issue, in english, and not involving a 30 step process. Anyone have any ideas?

Yes, I really am blind.

What are you searching to find these articles with overcomplicated instructions?

Blinkin

Lets see if I remember the exact wording; there have been more than a few attempts to find a solution.

Something that may be relevant is that none of my searches have found an answer to my particular issue. A lot of them assume that the speakers are just not appearing in the task tray and if you go into device manager, or sounds, or add/remove, that the thing is listed among the other output devices; things like headsets, external speakers, microphone, etc and all you need to do is dig deep enough and it's there and you're just too dense to see it. I do not have speakers anywhere, in any setting. So, everything falls flat at that point.

Some of the search terms that I've tried:

Windows 10 update removed speakers
Windows update, no speakers
Microsoft update missing speakers
Windows 10 no speakers in task tray
windows 10 how to recover speakers

among about a dozen or more other searches. The directions aren't as complicated as I made out, but between the tech speak and a long list of directions that I would need a degree in computer science to understand or a step simply isn't appearing on the screen, it's like reading the directions for a my neice's Barbie Beach House back in the 80's.

I admit that, although I have a batchlor's, certifications for several Nuclear  devices and how to handle a breach of such devices, A seriously deep education of everything dog, including immunization, wound care, treatment of common conditions and the list goes on and on...the point is that I'm a fairly educated person with a high level of comprehention, I feel like a total moron whenever I go looking for fixes for simple issues.)

Ugh, well, I can cut through a lot of the crap, there. Let's start with stuff you can do yourself.

1) Open Start.

2) Search for Command Prompt, right-click the top result, and select the Run as administrator option.

3) Type the following command to perform a quick check and press Enter:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

4) See what that says, and do a more thorough scan. This will take awhile:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

5) If either or both of the above find anything, you can attempt a repair using:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

6) If the above fails, give me the make and model of your Dell and I can point you to the specific driver files you need to grab and run for your audio.

Unfortunately, doing it 'properly' would require deleting your audio drivers for a bit. Which, obviously, is something that isn't conducive to helping you. Someone would need to help walk you through that bit.
