Hi Guys;:

I did a search for this in the help topics, but not any real answers that seem to work.

The situation was working fine up to a couple of weeks ago, and all of a sudden, it stopped doing what I expected it to do.

In the past, if I clicked on "Show new replies to your post", I got a list of topics that I've posted in that have new post. When I clicked on "New" I was taken to the first unread post in the thread. If that was reply #98, then it started at Reply#98. I could then start reading at that point to see new replies.

Since the middle of October, when I click on "New", it opens the thread, but at the very top of the page. Any suggestions on how to fix this? Clicking on "Last post" on any page does the same thing, so that option is out.

Normally, it wouldn't be a big deal, but continually having to either read every line, or jumping about to find a post that is new is really time consuming and frustrating for me. Alll I want is for the thread to open on a new post, like it use to do.

So, help?

Can you give an example of a thread this seems to be happening in?

What browser are you using?

Blinkin

i:

Thank for responding, I'm using Google Groan, but get the same results in Microsnot Edge.

Do you want all of the threads, or just the top 10? I haven't come across a thread in weeks that gets me any closer than the top of the page of the last unread post. I'll give you some of the threads that I'm either following, or involved in.

Strange New World (Blinkin and Franklin)

These three had new post in the last 12 hours or so. All open on the right page, but at the very top of the page. Using my screen reader, i have discovered that I cn get to a particular day, but as close as I can get. Clicking on "Last Post" gives me the same results.

Yeah I'm not sure what's happening with you. The anchor tags (what should take your screen reader down with it) are functioning normally.

Does 'Go Down' properly take you to the very last post on the page?

Blinkin

Leave it to me to come up with problems no one else ever does. My whole experience with computers have baffled the experts, usually telling me, "I've never seen that before." lol

I have to admit, even after being here since 2012, I had never used the 'Go Down' button until you mentioned it. I used it on three threads with new  post just a minute ago  and it didn't do anything at all. Well, it gets marked as something that I've clicked on before, but beyond that, nothing happens; the cursor doesn't even move off of the button. Does that help you figure out what's going on?

Wild guess, but any chance the screen is scrolling but the reader doesn't move its focus?  I'm thinking of the behaviors like https://axesslab.com/skip-links/.

It seems like every year there's another bug of that variety floating around somewhere...

Vekseid

Ugh, that has to be it.

I can make some javascript to force focus, I guess? But Blinkin's screen reader is definitely at fault here. Thing is this has to break a lot of things.

Thanks for the suggestion. I don't get the 'skip link' wording when I tab about on the site, but that does work for me, as does the 'H' key for jumping from heading to heading. If the p- damn, there are headings at the top of a post... why hadn't I seen that before? so, that is an option for me to keep me from pulling out what hair that I have left.

At any rate, that could be an issue. The first thing I se when I load the site or change pages is the edit field for searching, immediately followed by the 'disable shoutbox'

Thanks, the heading forehead slap will help even if I have to scroll down the page all the time.

Don't do that!!! Screwing up everyone else's experience and busting the site isn't what I would want you to do!

I got a notice last night that JAWS has a serious update. I haven't installed it yet; I'm still trying to get October's windows update to install and have November's  on top of that. The October's update seems to install, it says done and to restart, but on restart, it hangs up at about 35% and has to restart without the updates. this poor 14 month old laptop is running itself to death with just my screen reader, windows and google open. If I'm reading it right, that's using 91% of RAM. If I can get a break with the bills, I'm going to get a memory expansion, but I'm under water right now.

The 'skip link' is the new link itself, it works mechanically in the exact same way. It just isn't needed because, y'know, it's supposed to take you straight to what you want to read.

I am kind of skeptical about what is going on with your laptop. If I were nearby I'd totally offer to clean it personally. : /

Though, if it's 'hanging', you may want to leave it for awhile. Sometimes a particular update phase can take a fair amount of time.

Blinkin

Well, if the issue is on my side, I need to look for a solution. I'm crap on the appropriate terms to search for. You mentioned an anchor that the cursor should be going to when I open the page? Are there any other technical terms that I should be looking for?

I did the Jaws update, but I'm not seeing any difference, so what I'm looking for may be in the settings someplace. Either in JAWS  or Google.

Thanks for the thought. when we got this laptop, it's about twice as fast with nearly 3 times the memory and RAM. I was running everything just fine on the desktop, and so, I shouldn't be having problems with the laptop. The only difference is that I was running JAWS 19 on the desktop and on the laptop, it's JAWS 2021. JAWS is a memory hog, it always has been, but I would of thought that updating to a system with 16 gigs of ram, up from a 4 gig desktop could handle everything. The processor speed is pushing the needed speed, but it's within the requirements.

I have a couple of friends who could handle it, but they are busier than I am. I can't afford a shop and who knows how long they would have it before returning it to me screwed up even more than it is. I've never gotten anything back from a repair shop that ended up working like it was suppose to; the last time, they installed software that wouldn't play well with JAWS and so, I couldn't use it at all... The tech didn't even know that Jaws was on the system and didn't test it... even though it was talking to him when I left the shop. lol

I  wonder, if I sent you a list of what's running on this thing if you might spot a few things that I don't need and can free up some memory? I think that the list is a little over 90 items.

Just a couple more ideas for troubleshooting:

Does the "use this link" work on this demo page?  https://info.sice.indiana.edu/~hrosenba/Demo/Demo2.html  This would eliminate the E-specific causes.

For the E links, do you end up on the expected part of the page if you use "Open in new tab" or copy/paste the link into the address bar?

Scanning a JAWS reference, there are a some settings that might affect this behavior, you might try toggling them to different values.  It would be a good idea to remember the prior value so you can set them back.

* Web / HTML / PDFs -> Navigation -> Screen tracks virtual cursor
* Web / HTML / PDFs -> Miscellaneous -> Link Activation

Those links on that page work as expected. So, yah for me for once. ;)

Sadly, opening a new window and pasting the link for a particular post puts me at the top of the page, just as it does for the original window. I would of thought, with a post specific address that that would work. It use to work like that, but this is the first time that I've tried it in a while.

I haven't looked into the Jaws settings yet, but I will. I need

The settingsas they are now are:

Tracking is checked. I didn't see any other options except to uncheck.

Link activation is set "Enter simulates mousde click"

Not sure if that is the way that they re suppose to be or now. On a side note, smart navigation is turned off.

Very interesting actually.  That does suggest some connection to E...

A few more wild ideas:
* Any extensions you can disable?  You mentioned it occurs in two browsers, which makes it somewhat unlikely to be a browser extension, but worth trying
* You might try disabling JavaScript (and re-enabling it afterward, as disabling it breaks lots of websites).  There are some ways that JS can impact scrolling, so figuring out if this changes anything may narrow it down.
