I'm have two variations here, one where the knight is a prisoner and one where the Queen is a prisoner. PM if interested.

I've done quite a few variations on the Queen/Knight pairing so I thought it would be interesting to do it with a captured knight from a rival kingdom. I often do it where the Queen is 35-40 and married to a much older King who is a buffoon resulting in her doing all the work and being quite stressed. So she takes a knight as a lover to let off steam. Perhaps she is attracted to him right away and has him spared when she sees he is a prisoner and has him imprisoned somewhere very close to her (maybe the dungeon at her own castle) in order to see him discreetly.

I thought for later in the story maybe the king wants to throw her over or some younger princess and is going to have her killed. Once the plot is in motion the knight can agree to represent her in a tournament to challenge the king's claim to the throne and win her crown back. One angle here could be that the princess is from a kingdom hostile to both of them so the knight does not want them to gain power and put his original home in danger. Naturally with him helping depose the King and his being friendly with the Queen that would put an end to the initial war between their two kingdoms.

For the alternate idea, the castle where the Queen is visiting gets sacked and she is taken as a valuable hostage. However, the knight is fittingly a chivalrous gentleman and has been taught to respect loyalty, so he surprises her by treating her well. Perhaps he stops common soldiers from raping her when they first meet. For the main story he'll have to transport her somewhere else so it will just be the two of them on horseback. Things will eventually get physical with feelings developing and her again being with a much older king and being sexually repressed as a result. The endgame here could be the same as the other idea with the King wanting to depose the Queen and the knight helping her regain her crown and become monarch, ending the war. Another wrinkle here could be that the King left that castle lightly defended, hoping the Queen would be killed or captured in the attack and he could marry the new foreign princess.

I do often want an age difference here with the Queen 35-40 and the knight young in his early 20's. I wanted a sophisticated "great lady" for the Queen. If you did not like the age difference as much I could put the knight in his early 30's instead.
