Malk - I am fine with no weapons.  I think I actually like it better.

Congratulations, you've unlocked Flirtatious Crash! - Envious

Sure there are weapons! Throw on an EV suit and shoot them with a pistol :P
A&A's

CaptainErotica

Serenity didn't have any weapons. Or at least I don't recall them using any, except when they attached that huge gun to the hull when they wanted to sneak past the Reavers to get to Miranda. Some ships do have guns and I'm okay if the group wants something other than a Firefly class ship. Can also have them added later in game.

Here is a link to the Firefly Book. I use to have a different link but, I can't find it. the book itself was a free fan made book so there is no legal issue downloading a copy of it.

@Malkavian: Most of the Leadership Edges are Seasoned or higher. They also generally only affect Extras (NPCs). However there this...
Natural Leader: Seasoned, Spirit d8,
Command Leadership Edges now apply to Wild Cards(PC's and powerful NPCs).

You could take Command...
Command: Novice, Smarts d6
+1 to Extras’ Shaken or Stunned recovery rolls.

And take Natural Leader as your Rank 4 (first Seasoned) Advance. You would need a d6 Smarts and d8 Spirit to get both. Most of the Leadership Edges require Smarts D6-D8 or Sprit d6-d8.

Can't seem to access the link. I assume it's more likely an issue with my device than the link it self though.

Edit: Got it!

Provided those would be useful, I'd consider them. Doesn't really make sense for here not to have leadership Edges otherwise, given her history and current occupational choice.

CaptainErotica

The leadership edges are mainly set up for Mass Battle type stuff.

Command itself is sort of just okay. The +1 to un-shake is nice, but nothing to get excited about. But it is the only Novice level Leadership Edge and is a prerequisite for all of the other edges. In my opinion you could still be an effective Captain without them but, with your backstory they make sense.

Malkavian

Any other ones which would fare better in application but still be justifiable given what I mentioned in PM?

Going to attempt to work on my Captain tonight, though I'm still brand spanking new to Savage Worlds. Looks simple enough, but the trick is making an accurate representation of my character and not overlooking Edges, Hindrances, or Skills that would ideally suit her.

Once I have a more basic idea I'll share some here - IF the GM is happy for me to do so (not sure how long he wants us to have worked together). Unless he provides some restrictions, I am happy to tie my Captain in with other crewmembers.

Would there be any objections if she owned the ship? Makes sense given her Captaincy, especially given her post-war motivation of claiming something for herself that she doesn't need to give up to anyone - especially the Alliance. (Just looking to clarify before I go writing up her background.)

Also, if anyone has a good female Browncoat art, feel free to PM it over: I might not use it - especially if it's too "sexy" - but it might help me visualise her.

We're of one mind, then. ;D

I'm torn: on the one hand, a Firefly is a gorgeous ship; on the other, my character is already inspired by Mal, and I feel cheap just throwing my vote behind the same kind of craft that he rides.

Firefly boats ARE common and old and reliable - it states as much often enough in the show - which might explain their common appearance in the Black. But in honesty, I'm sure the same can be said of other cheap vessels, especially those repurposed in the war (Serenity was a medical vessel I believe before it was binned).

Assuming my Captain did buy her, it would have to have been cheap - no way could she have afforded anything mightier.

Test Sheet
So working on a character sheet....wanted to see what people thought before I do more, in terms of format.

Name:
Gender | Sexuality: Cis Female | Lesbian
Bennies: 3
Ship Role: Pilot

Edges:
Ace
Aces are pilots and drivers who have a special affinity with their car, boat, plane, or other vehicle. They may spend Bennies to make Soak rolls for a vehicle they control or command, using Boating, Driving, or Piloting instead of Vigor. Each success and raise negates a Wound and any associated Critical Hit (see page 119). Aces also get to Reroll if they fail a maneuvering roll due to a Complication.
Alliance Connections
It’s a well-known fact that the alliance protects it’s own. Some people are simply “more Alliance” than others. Be you from an influential family or maybe an important exec of the Blue Sun or simply an alliance War Hero or Bureaucrat of note. You gain a +2 to any common knowledge roll when dealing with the alliance, as well as a +2 Persuasion when dealing with the Alliance. You cannot take the hindrance Browncoat with this Edge.
Level Headed
Fighters who can keep their cool when everyone else is running for cover make deadly combatants. A hero with this Edge draws an additional Action Card in combat and chooses which to use.

Hinderances:
Impulsive (Major)
The daredevil almost always leaps before he looks. He rarely thinks things through before taking action.
Quirk (Minor): Collects Kawaii tchotchkes and the ‘Verse version of Kpop music and collectibles
This individual has some minor foible that is usually humorous but can occasionally cause him real trouble. A swashbuckler may always try to slash his initials on his foes, a dwarf may brag constantly about his culture, or a snobby débutante might not eat, drink, or socialize with the lower class, for example
Secret (Minor or Major): Former Alliance child star.
Your hero has a secret she keeps to protect herself or others. As a Minor Hindrance, the secret is troublesome but not life-threatening.

Personality: Impulsive is an excellent word to describe Maybelle.  Her life has been defined by impulsive actions that have thus far panned out which hasn’t exactly help her turn away from rash emotional actions and embrace deep introspective thought.  Maybelle is also extremely happy.  She found her passion in a way most people don’t, and she wouldn’t want to be anywhere else than soaring thru the cold calm black of space.  Maybelle absolutely adores cute things.  The cockpit is filled with too cute plastic toys, posters of the latest core world pop bands and the occasional plushy.  If it’s adorable, Maybelle wants it. She can come off as a bit immature in her demeanor, but she is an expert pilot willing to push the limits of her ship just to see how far it can go.

Background: In the core worlds Maybelle Park is known as Bu Hwa Young, or more likely she is recognized as “WaWa” Bu.  She is the daughter of an entertainment empire and a child actress who was plastered all over Core World media.  She was adorable and cute and had a signature saying that people repeated all the time.  That was great when she was 10 years old but it kind of wears on a twenty year old woman that doesn’t want to be treated like she is six.  She rebelled as a teenager, breaking minor laws like intoxication in public and racing her Luxray-9000 Luxury flitter in public airspace.  She crashed more than one luxury vehicle in her desperate need to be seen as anything other than the perfect sitcom daughter.

At first the public turned on her. She was just another spoiled brat, addicted to sake and speed, but her parents had the best publicists Alliance money could buy and spun her youthful rebellion into something of a career revival.  The thought of spending the rest of her life as a character, a symbol of what others thought a young woman should be, horrified Maybell.  She had spent her childhood trying to live up to a fictional character everyone expected her to be.  She was damn sure not going to spend the best years of her adulthood the same way.

Maybelle cashed in all her money, paid for the best false papers her money could buy and jumped the first ship headed to the Rim where hardly anyone had heard of WaWa Bu.  She spent a few years working on ships and leaning the ins and outs of space flight until she was able to schmooze a crew into taking her on as a pilot and she hasn’t looked back.  She is a recent addition to the captain’s crew, but has a reputation as a stellar pilot if you can put up with her eccentricities.

True, but didn't think it was a problem for those in the E group (there's only one Malkavian!).

Those who aren't on the E group can PM me and I'll pass over the username.

Muddy Waters

I need all the help I can get in creating a Character sheet.  I have a history I'm working on but I need a character sheet I assume.   Also on discord under the same handle.

THINK I've managed basic stats, though likely made an error somewhere. ??? Guess we'll find out.

Was also reading more on the Firefly system, and it actually looks pretty damn cool. Though, admittedly, I think I'm finding it less daunting when viewing it as a player than as a GM... Still not as simple as Serenity rules, but much more flexible. Will keep reading up on it, despite us not using it here, for use in a future game.

CaptainErotica

I've been reading over the Firefly Book. It does look fun. I know most of you have started creating characters with Savage Worlds but, I'm will to give the Firefly Book a try instead if you all prefer.

Quote from: CaptainErotica on February 19, 2021, 06:10:11 AMI've been reading over the Firefly Book. It does look fun. I know most of you have started creating characters with Savage Worlds but, I'm will to give the Firefly Book a try instead if you all prefer.

I would personally prefer Firefly, for three reasons:

  • It's a good, flexible system that encourages engagement with the narrative for mechanical affect (Complications and Assets);
  • It's build for, and tailored around, the setting, so you know it'll cover pretty much everything shown in the series; and
  • I'm far more familiar with Cortex than I am Savage Worlds.
My main hesitancy before regarding Firefly was tackling it for the first time as a GM with such a sizeable group: it's flexibility is both appealing and a little daunting for someone who normally prefers more linear, more clear-cut rules. However, having read through it more, the system is growing on me.

So yeah, my vote is for Firefly. ;D

(I'm also happy to help whoever needs it to make their characters - far more comfortable with this one's process than Savage World's!)

Firefly, it looks like - the newer one.

Marie Reynolds

Okay i am just a bit confused cause Firefly has distinctions and  choosing  3 types of archetypes. where as Serenity has  complications and Assets. Sorry for being  a bit befuddled, I am still waiting for the caffeine to kick in.
