X-Men: Apocalypse is a freeform superhero game set in the Marvel universe, specifically the X-Men universe. This game is set in its own continuity and so allows for original interpretations of classic characters. The game will feature a sandbox environment, the school, in which characters can interact as they see fit while trying to find a way to live a functional life despite having superpowers. It will also include an overarching, ongoing story with the primary villain being Apocalypse but also including a fair number of other classic X-Men rogues. Though the game will not be smut-oriented there will be a specific thread for smut scenes. You do not need extensive X-Men knowledge to participate in this game.

I understand this thread has a good number of paragraphs however I feel that they all serve a clear purpose conveying information about this take on the X-Men. Please read them in full before asking any questions, they may be answered there. I feel it's very important to outline this version of the X-Men.

This game is now recruiting. Please post in this thread if interested and send CS's to me via PM.

The Setting

The first currently known mutants started to exhibit their powers in the late 1950's. These once normal people could do the impossible. Read other's thoughts, move metal with their mind, regenerate from brutal injuries. Though they remained hidden for a time eventually Charles Xavier, a student at the time, sought the others out using his telepathy and started to realize they were becoming more and more common. Mutants are still poorly understood though the prevailing theory is that nuclear weapons testing prompted the activation of dormant genes in homo sapiens and created the mutants known as homo superior.

The X-Men formed in 1961 as a team of special operatives who worked with the U.S. Government. At the time their members were Charles Xavier (Professor X), Max Eisenhardt (Magneto), Hank McCoy (Beast), Logan Howlett (Wolverine), Victor Creed (Sabretooth), and Raven Darkholme (Mystique). For several years they combatted the growing threat of rogue mutants abusing their powers as well as taking part in the cold war in several minor missions. They performed these missions in order to gain further freedom.

Eventually, it was Charles Xavier and Hank McCoy who made mutants public knowledge in a press release known now as 'X-Day' on May 20th 1964. They had found several other mutants over the years and during the press release, Charles vowed to use his expansive family home in Westchester County to help these people to foster control and understanding. Hank, for his part, chose to pursue a career in politics as an ambassador for mutant-kind in American politics. While there was shock and some fear there was also at least a reasonable degree of acceptance.

This acceptance was shaken as more and more mutants were discovered and more frequent mutant-perpetrated attacks occurred. Magneto, Sabretooth, and Mystique had been friends at the school for the first few years it was in 1972 when they formed the mutant rights group 'The Brotherhood of Mutants' who swiftly went past the line of peaceful protest and committed violent acts in the name of their people. Magneto's rhetoric gradually turned from pro-mutant to including anti-human sentiment and eventually becoming known for his mutant supremacist beliefs. Due to his power and influence, few will dare even suggesting he be tackled directly despite the fact he and his brotherhood are now deemed wanted terrorists.

Since that time Charles established his home as 'Xavier's Academy for the Gifted' and accepted mutant students from all over the world. They have sister schools in England, France, Canada, Brazil, Egypt, China, Japan, India, and Australia all with close ties to Charles and teaching based on his lessons. The school teaches up to a university level, culminating at age twenty-three for degrees. Mutants can then be placed into a traditional career provided they have also passed 'Adult Mutant Studies'. While younger students are taught to the best of the school's abilities the school teaches those aged 18+ 'Adult Mutant Studies' a three-year-long course designed to help them understand and manage their particular gifts.

The X-Men still exist as an independent special response team. They work closely with the U.S. Government. There are many forces both in the government and in the public working against the X-Men and frequently accusing them of being a danger to the population. So far no better response force to dangerous, rogue mutants has been formulated and so the X-Men are still the first to be called when there are mutant threats.  Their sister schools also have connected teams of mutants who respond to these dangerous issues.

In modern-day support for the mutant registration act, which would force all mutants to be registered and assessed by the government, has all-time high support. Alternatives to the X-Men such as the Sentinel Program and the Weapon-X Program have been gathering increasing support from politicians and voters. Charles and Hank work tirelessly to protect the image of mutants but men like Magneto cause them constant struggles.

More worrying perhaps than even the registration act and government programs are the shadowy dreams that have plagued mutants for the past month. They do not occur every night but they are frequent, more so in telepaths. They are always dark and murky with glimmers of ash and embers. The dreams evoke a feeling of great fear and danger, as though a force of unimaginable power is looking down upon a helpless victim. Some see visions of vast hurricanes, wildfires, earthquakes, or tsunamis though they only ever see loose glimpses of these disasters. Several also report hearing a vast chorus of voices chanting a name just before they wake up in a cold sweat. 'En Sabah Nur'.

Mutant Classification

There are several classifications of mutants as designated by the research started by Charles Xavier and Max Eisenhardt many decades ago and now continued by geneticists across the world. These classifications are not absolute and cannot ever be perfectly precise. They are only meant to give a loose, general indication of power and the mutant's visibility. It should be noted that it is more than possible for a mutant's category to change as their abilities to utilise their power grow. Many do not fully understand the scope of their own ability.

Omega: Omega-Level Mutants are mutants who possess power that is a danger to vast numbers of people. They have few, if any, rivals and can typically only really be challenged when heavily outnumbered or by other Omega mutants. Known omega mutants include Magneto, Professor X, Proteus, Cable, Kid Omega, Elixir, and Juggernaut.

Alpha: Alpha-Level mutants have a high power level and no drawback at all to their powers. They can also pass as an ordinary human. Jean Grey is currently considered to be an alpha-level mutant in both telepathy and telekinesis, a rare combination. Emma Frost is considered to be on a similar level. Their powers must have significant combat applications and they must be able to conceal themselves as an ordinary person. They must also be able to use their powers specifically when needed and have at least some control.

Beta: Beta-Level mutants have a high power level but at least some minor drawbacks to their abilities such as issues with control or reliability. Sabretooth would be a beta-level mutant as whilst his regeneration and physique are highly powerful he cannot control his regeneration and his sharpened teeth and nails mark him out as a mutant.

Gamma: Gamma-level mutants have a high power level but serious drawbacks and flaws to their mutation or obvious differences from ordinary humans. Hank McCoy or 'Beast' is an example of a Gamma-level mutant as his blue form immediately marks him out from ordinary people despite his powerful physique. As he has no ability to disguise himself as a normal person he is classed as Gamma-Level.

Delta: Delta-Level mutants are able to pass for ordinary humans. Their powers are more subtle than the above three in their application. Whilst they may be notably effective if utilized with skill and practice they are not as raw in their nature. It's possible for a delta-level mutant to not realize they are a mutant for some time.

Epsilon: Epsilon-level mutants are unable to pass for ordinary humans due to their mutation however they also do not have significant, immediately obvious combat potential. They may have strengths but they are minimal or come with severe drawbacks that limit their effectiveness.

Xavier's Academy for the Gifted

Xavier's Academy for the Gifted is a converted mansion in Westchester County. It is a huge building that has been expanded on over the years and it has expansive grounds. It also has a large underground area which includes the Blackbird, the Danger Room, Holding Cells and various equipment for training. Adult Mutant Studies classes take place underground as do meetings of the senior X-Men.

Xavier's Academy accepts students of all ages and has no tuition fees. It only accepts mutant students. Those under twenty-three at the time they join who do not have a degree are expected to study a subject and obtain a degree. All students over 18 who have not completed the three-year mutant studies course are expected to undertake that course. The course includes theory, studying the origins and nature of mutants, in addition to studies on the treatment and acceptance of mutants in the wider world. The course also includes practical elements learning to control powers and combat training. Not all students are expected to become X-Men but all students are expected to be able to keep control of their powers in dangerous situations.

The X-Men are split into junior and senior X-Men. No Under-18 students can be a part of the X-Men. Senior X-Men are either already highly experienced or have fully completed their mutant studies course. Junior X-Men are members still studying their mutant studies course but who wish to use their powers to help people.

In the Academy relationships between teachers or senior X-Men and students or junior X-Men are strictly forbidden. This is due to the imbalanced power dynamic and concerns that it could impact extremely poorly on the school's image. Not all teachers are senior X-Men and not all senior X-Men are teachers, similarly not all junior X-Men are students and not all students are junior X-Men. Whilst the teachers cover all traditional topics, Mutant Studies classes are covered by Senior X-Men only.

Almost everyone is allowed to come and go as they please so long as they attend or teach any classes they are required to unless they are a severe risk to ordinary people and need some time to adjust. All teachers and senior X-Men are highly paid while students and junior X-Men have a reasonable allowance and have their living expenditure covered. Not everyone lives on-site but most do. All teachers are given a large private room while most students have a shared room with between 1-3 roommates.

Academic classes are part of traditional education. They begin with 101, then the main course. Students can study up to two courses at a time unless they are extremely superhumanly intelligent. Teachers usually teach just one academic class but sometimes may teach one class and a 101.

Mutant studies are a mandatory part of being an X-Man. All Junior X-Men must pass all courses that apply to them. They take three years in total. You do not need to list them as a part of classes taken because it is assumed all Junior X-Men are taking all courses that apply to them.

Game Rules

1. Do not cause or participate in drama. If you have an issue with another writer let me know as soon as possible or inform site staff if needed.
2. A reasonable standard of English is required. Third-person, past tense, no overly short posts.
3. Treat other writers with respect. Do not lust after other characters if the writer says no to a romantic/sexual connection. Absolutely do not lust after writers under any circumstances. Check Ons/Offs if writing smut. Include content warnings for graphic or potentially upsetting content.
4. Do not godmode any other characters including any named NPC's.
5. Be proactive in seeking out scenes and connections. Create open scenes, talk to other writers. This game will feature a Discord for plotting.
6. If participating in missions, prioritize them and make sure to post within the 1-week time limit. (No time requirements outside missions.)
7. Inform me if you are unable to post for two weeks (In general) or one week (For missions). You may lose your canon character/face claim if you go inactive without informing me.
8. Do not expect to always win fights/succeed in missions.
9. Avoid politics, religion, and other controversies in the OOC.
10. GM word is final on issues. I will listen and try to work with players wherever possible, though.

Character Creation

This section will include information on taken canon characters who are PC's, NPC's or Villains of the game. It will also include information on taken face claims, mutations, and aliases. Please do not try to use a face claim who has played a canon X-Men character in a film unless that character is already taken and is not using that face claim. E.g. Sophie Turner is available because Jean Grey is taken as an NPC and is using Famke Janssen as a face claim.

Please do not create any mary-sues or characters with powers that would make them Omega-Level. If there are too many Alpha-Level mutants I may place a hold on them temporarily. Certain characters are 'barred' due to their power level. Characters who are allowed but who have been portrayed as Omega level, such as Iceman, should be toned down for this game and portrayed at alpha level or lower.

This game will begin with a character limit of 3 per writer. Please only take on what you can consistently keep up with. There will be a limit of one Alpha-Level mutant per writer. There will be a limit of two teachers / students per writer meaning you can have up to two teachers and one student or two students and one teacher but not three of either.

Please try to avoid mentioning specific characters in your character's backstory. Instead of mentioning being aided by 'Wolverine' simply state 'An X-Man' and then seek out a person to fill that connection if you would like them to have a tie to another character.

Please make sure to fill out the CS in full. Certain things are non-negotiable. There are no omega level mutants as PC's. There are no non-mutant PC's. All PC's must have a face claim (Does not apply if the character's mutation causes a significantly non-human appearance, in this case use realistic art which will be judged case-by-case.). The personality must be at least one paragraph and history must be at least three paragraphs. The taken characters are taken for a reason. Either they are big parts of the school who I want to remain consistent or they are a part of the story.

You can write another canon Marvel character who is not a mutant however they should have a reason for being in this environment and their power should be explainable as a mutation. For example, translating the character 'Hercules' to be a mutant is not feasible - his background and nature are simply far too removed from humanity. Translating over someone like Daredevil, however, is likely much more possible.

Gender-swapped takes on characters are absolutely acceptable for this game.

Certain mutations are highly unlikely (Or in some cases impossible) to be accepted as they are difficult in a group game scenario. These include but are not limited to: Time manipulation, anything including the word 'omni', anything that would make that mutant omega-level, death-reversal, power granting, power removal, power decreasing/dampening, power manipulation, power amplifying, power copying.

Canon characters are NOT first come first served. Once approved, they are yours, but if two people state interest in the same character at the same time I will let both people work on a CS and approve the one that fits the game best. You cannot reserve canon characters in this game however you can state who you're interested in.

Personality: What are they like as a person? What do they like and dislike. What do they think of being a mutant? What do they think of ordinary people? Why are they in their roles in academics and the X-Men, whatever those roles are. What is their view on the rising support of the mutant registration act? How have they been affected by the dark dreams plaguing mutants for the past month. Minimum one paragraph.

History: A brief idea of their personal history. Does not need to match 616 canon or any other marvel continuity canon. Should include the age at which their mutation developed and how they ended up joining Xavier's Academy for the Gifted. Minimum of three paragraphs.

Mutation

(Mutation Name Here): This section can be used to detail the character's mutation. It should have no more than five total effects if creating an original character. 'Enhanced phsyiology' only counts as one power but if used to a moderate level then it should come with distinct downsides or other powers should be weaker to balance it out. Do not mention numbers, specifics or combat feats that include other characters. For example when describing superhuman strength state 'Strong enough to lift a car' or 'Strong enough to lift a bus', do not state 'Strong enough to equal Colossus'.

Equipment: Any equipment unique to them such as a specially designed suit or a piece of equipment. Can be 'None' if they have none.
Weaknesses/Flaws: Flaws with their mental state, body or perhaps powers. Ideally simple. E.g. aggressive, clumsy or vulnerable to heat. Should have at least one.

F.A.Q

What board will the game be set in? Extreme, due to the potential for graphic violence during missions. That being said any and all graphic content is entirely optional and avoidable. This game welcomes both those who want to experience graphic storylines and write smut as well as those who would rather remain in the scholastic environment.

Do I have to participate in the active story? A little. The nightmares affect all mutants as do certain world events. I feel that this will help prevent the game from potentially getting stale or repetitive. I would encourage having at least one active X-Man so that you can participate in missions however you do not have to. That being said I do not want big names being claimed and under-utilized and so if you wish to write a character like Cyclops or Storm please make sure they are active.

Will the active story affect the sandbox? Yes. It will influence world news, it may result in issues for mutants socializing outside of the school. It may even result in combat situations occurring at the mansion depending on how things go.

X doesn't match 616, why? Because I think it will make this setting more fun / interesting / unique. I don't mind the odd question but please don't point these out as if they are inaccuracies that need fixing. I'm most likely aware of the difference from 616 continuity and made the change intentionally. E.g. the inclusion of Dr. Doom and him being a mutant. It serves as a good example of transitioning a canon character to fitting in this mutant-centric version of the Marvel universe and I think the character is interesting.

Can I play an original character? Yes, absolutely. Just make sure they have no more than five powers and that they would not be described as omega-level.

How will combat work? In the case of missions it will be based on writing, making smart choices. Ideally do let your character mess up at times. The outcome of the missions will heavily depend on the choices made by the present player characters.

What about player vs. player conflict? If two player characters have a conflict then it should be discussed OOC. Do not vent OOC frustrations by starting IC conflict. IC drama is fun, OOC drama is not. A blur of the two is also not fun. Any IC conflict should be able to be politely discussed OOC or it should not take place. If you cannot settle on a result, have it be a draw or have someone else break it up. There will be IC consequences for characters who start physical violence or misuse their powers.

What about student/junior x teacher/senior relationships? These are forbidden by IC rules but not OOC rules. Therefore these relationships must be very, very carefully hidden. If they are found out the teacher/senior will lose their job and be barred from the Academy. Due to the presence of multiple telepaths, I would advise heavily against these relationships. That said if you are set on one it is possible and I will not forcibly end it via Charles or Jean finding out.

X is listed as a villain but I want to write them, what can I do? We can discuss the potential of a connected original character or, in some cases, the potential of changing that villain. This will depend on their importance to the story, their power level and whether they have been used IC yet.

Can I play X other canon Marvel character? Possibly. It is case-by-case and depends on your interpretation. Characters like Luke Cage or Daredevil would be easy enough to translate and welcome in the game whereas characters like Hercules are too inhuman by their very nature or characters like Sentry are far too powerful.

Which other mutant groups exist? The Morlocks (Who are barely known by anyone at all), the population of Genosha and Krakoa. Some mutants help as guards on Rykers Island, Muir Island, and The Ice Box. Mr. Sinister and the Marauders exist but have kept their machinations underground, much like Sebastian Shaw and the Hellfire Club. Clan Akkaba exists in a very small form but is also hidden from public knowledge. There are also sister schools to Xavier's all over the world.

How are Mutants treated in law enforcement and militaries? Mutants are not allowed to work as police officers or fight as soldiers. International law prohibits the use of Mutant soldiers under an addendum to the Geneva Convention. Whilst terror groups and extremely desperate people may abuse or break this law it is extremely rare that any major powers would break it. In the U.S. mutants are given an honorable discharge and a pension if their powers manifest while they are serving in the military.

What are the legalities of life as a mutant? Mutants are not given any personal legal treatment unless they commit a crime using their mutation. In this case, they are given the opportunity to enroll at Xavier's Academy and rehabilitate themselves and learn control. This opportunity is typically only given if it was a minor crime or an accident.

What is the public perception of mutants? Extremely mixed. They certainly face discrimination from ordinary people especially mutants who are immediately obvious - certainly gammas and epsilons are likely to experience bullying, harassment, and other discrimination including potentially from law enforcement, teachers, employers, and sometimes even other mutants. Some treat them with fear, others disgust. Many do look upon the X-Men as genuine heroes and there are widespread groups of humans who consider themselves allies to mutants and support their causes however these are always mirrored by hate groups such as the Friends of Humanity.

How many mutants are there? There are tens of thousands of mutants at the least. Almost everyone will at least know of one mutant however many don't know they know a mutant as a large number of mutants conceal their nature. Most people will have never seen a mutant actually using a notable power apart from on the news when watching the X-Men, Brotherhood, or a rogue mutant.

Does Namor exist in the setting? If so, is he out as a mutant? How much of his history is intact, as an Invader in WWII, for instance, or his less sympathetic actions such as attempting to flood/flooding New York City?

I would be interested in playing an original character. :)   She is a character I have already created for an M&M game that died, but I would really like to play her and she can easily be translated to being a mutant. :)

In writing, a flaw is not the interesting part of a character.  What is interesting is how a person overcomes a flaw.  I want to read how a person overcomes a flaw, not how the flaw overcomes the person.

Does Namor exist in the setting? If so, is he out as a mutant? How much of his history is intact, as an Invader in WWII, for instance, or his less sympathetic actions such as attempting to flood/flooding New York City?

Namor exists but due to his position in Atlantis, he's not really a suitable player character. He has too much influence over too large of a group of people. History-wise the WWII history is definitely gone as superhumans of any nature (Only mutants) weren't publicly known until the 1960's and the NYC flood is probably gone too. Not sure what to do with Atlanteans but most likely taking out the Vodan aspect.

Sounds good! Happy to have original characters and I'm sure a character from that system can be translated easily enough.

Oh, an X-Men game run by Sun?  Oooooh!  I am into this!

Hi Biblio, hi Candy! And everyone else I haven't written with before!

I would like to express interest, and further in playing a character that is either widely disliked or generally considered pointless!  Meaning I would be thinking of playing Cyclops or Cypher.  No idea on face claims for either yet (I'm awful at that part), or which one I'd choose between.  It'd likely be based on what others choose or if anyone else would have a really strong yen to play Scott as I can't imagine there'd be a lot of people clamoring to play Doug.

Though I do also love Cannonball...and a version of Sunfire that was younger and grew up without the whole WWII thing over his head would be interesting...or a Thunderbird who didn't die and became a teacher but who still had something of a chip in his shoulder...lots of possibilities!  Still leaning towards Scott or Doug overall though.

Any of these ideas are welcome! I'm definitely happy to help. Scott would be the most welcome face to see from my perspective if he's an active presence in the game that'd be really nice. I rarely see him and I think he can be a really important part of the roster.

Hi Armphid!

Also, I forgot to mention that I’d be interested in playing an OC. I’ll have to ponder on what type of powers, though.

I think I assumed an OC as you usually write them, I think, but thank you for confirming.

If I ended up playing him, I would make an effort to be active.  I assume he should probably be a senior X-Man/teacher rather than a junior member/student.  I'll consider some things either way.

I know you said that specific characters should not be called out in CS as well and it's no problem sticking to that.  Are there any events/storylines from the comics that have happened by 2020?
