What if our world actually had super heroes? That's what I used to think about at night as I lay in bed and my mind drifted in and out of consciousness. How amazing could it be and what If I got to be one of them? What would it look like? Who would I be? Could I be mentally strong enough and am I good enough to deserve to wear the cape? We know what Stan Lee said about great power and it was always Spidey's dilemma. There's an emotional struggle and the comic books and MCU movies gloss over the human toll of it with their larger than life supers.

Well, that's the world we live in now. It's been all over the news and it's ugly. Nothing at all like what I imagined. Some people are selfish greedy assholes. An oil sheik asshole in the Middle East has laid claim to most of the oil fields of Saudi Arabia. I didn't pay much attention to it but world oil prices are all over the place. He's got some power where he can turn into living fire or something. There was also Doctor Plague, or that's what the New York Times called him. Not exactly original thinking haha. He infected a bunch of people with a deadly virus and the whole world went into lock down. It got blamed on an Asian country and it's been a whole thing. No one knows where he is now but reports say he's been captured and is in some government lab some place. Americans blaming China, China blaming Americans it's all so messed up. I'm just glad it's over. Those are just the most sensational headlines.

On the back pages of the news are all the other stories of the less sensational but equally troubling kinds. Many make local headlines. Bank robbers, gangsters, some pretty seriously messed up politician types tripping on their new powers. But the saddest are the people that have had their breakthroughs in the middle of some tragic event. One guy became super strong, he pulled a car out of the side of a building to get into the entrance way to rescue people. They caught it all on film. He kicked his way out the side of the building and a bunch of people got out then he turned to go back in and the building fell on him. Super strong does not mean he's the man of steal. They found his body charred and burned beyond recognition in the remains of the building after it collapsed on him.

Right now governments in different states and all over the world are debating rules about what they are calling "Breakthroughs." But here being a breakthrough means you have to report yourself to one of the government approved groups in the area or you need to stay out of trouble and keep a low profile. Most breakthroughs can't do anything other than parlor tricks so it's not a big deal. But they say there are thousands of these Breakthroughs all around the world and some are very dangerous.

Breakthroughs is a freeform superhero group game set in an alternate version of our own world where an event occurred that triggered a sort of variant mutation in some people around the world. This resulted in what is termed "breakthroughs," or people that develop super powers. The extent to which is as of yet unknown.

Our group centers around a group of individuals with a strong desire to be super heroes and do the right thing with their new found abilities. You are the heroes, be prepared to have your personal metal tested, get ready to face the emotional toil and horror of living in a world with super powered variant humans. Your city needs you. Can you be the hero that you always thought you'd be if given the chance?

This game will be set at the beginning of all of this and you will be among the first to have had your breakthroughs.

What is a Breakthrough and how does it work?

Unknown to the population at large the world passed through some some sort of cosmic energy belt that didn't seem alarming at the time. The cosmic energy wave is what triggered the wave of world wide breakthroughs. They didn't all happen at once, many are still happening, and since no one understands it, they don't know when or if it will stop. It's been several months now and the world is just beginning to wake up to the changes.

The act of becoming a Breakthrough and gaining some sort of super power/ability happens usually in a moment of extreme physical or emotional stress. The outcome is always matching some aspect of the individuals thoughts. An example might be if someone was fan-girling over Wonder Woman they might gain similar abilities although unlikely to match the exact powers it will be an obvious match. Another example might be if someone was obsessed with werewolves they might suddenly turn into a werewolf with very similar strengths and weaknesses. There was more than a few that turned into vampires and burst into flames on the spot being in the middle of a sunny day when it happened. Others happened out of necessity, someone gaining super speed so they could race across the road and rescue a pet dog before it was hit by a car type of deal. Regardless, all Breakthrough stories bare some basic level of similarity. Yours should as well. Ask questions if needed.

• A freeform original setting inspired by but not related to the series Wearing The Cape (by Marion Harmon) and Super Powered (by Drew Hayes). Knowledge of those series is not required. 
• The city our Breakthroughs are based in will be called "Superior City," it is loosely based on a cross between Chicago and Detroit with large populations and lots of crime. It is located along the Great Lakes in northern Wisconsin. (note there is a real Superior City and that is the site of our fictional version)   
• There will be a guided set of events with over arching plots. The primary of which will be the struggle between the general population, government, radical extremists, and our Breakthroughs. Plus the McGuffin, a looming threat of a single world ending catastrophe (yet to be revealed.)     
• There will also be open threads for self directed interactions of all types. So characters can socialize and have personal lives along with any super heroism outside of the GM directed plots. So go on with your badass self ☺

✪  Accept that your character will sometimes lose fights and/or get injured. Getting your ass kicked makes for better drama.
✪  Please communicate with others, seek out scenes, be proactive and involved in the game.
✪  Respect that this game is not smut focused and save that for the thread that will be designated for such purpose. You can be horny little bunnies in that thread. ✌

CREATION

Looking for writer's to come in pairs and have your characters know each other. Individual writer's that apply will be paired up with the next person that applies. It doesn't mean you have to writer together, you'll just set up character's personal backstory together, maybe your breakthrough story together. Than you will end up being on the same super hero team with another pair of people. NOTE: Pairs don't have to be couples, they can be friends, it doesn't matter, whatever works for you personally.  I'll be teaming you up into new found super teams of 4 players, odd numbers will be distributed among teams if needed. Plus I'll have character's in game that I'll be writing for so they will be mingling among characters as well.

Players may create more than one character if you want but I request that you keep it to two at the start and you must be able to keep up with your posting and not holding others up if you play more than one character. If you try and can't keep up, please be respectful of the other players and step forward to me so you can put one of your characters on pause if needed. When life changes later we can always bring them back off the benches. We'll work it out.

No Mary Sues. Make sure your character has real flaws and weaknesses. They don't have to be crippling but they have to be there, and they need to matter.

No Godlike Powers. We are looking for characters around the lower power level end of the X-men and Avengers. Powerful enough to be badasses when compared to any typical street thug. But characters should have lots of room to grow into more powerful supers later.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q:  What section will this group be in?
A:  Extreme, to cover the possibility of violence, blood, and sensitive topics that may be covered. WARNING: will contain brief references to suicide and other horrific acts of violence.

Q:  What are super powered people called?
A:   Variants or Breakthroughs

Q:  What is the name of federal government agency in charge of Variants?
A:   Department of Variant Affairs (DVA)

Q:  Can anyone become a Breakthrough? Or gain some variant ability?
A:  No. And no one knows what causes it yet. There have been horrific accidents and worse caused by what is known as "Origin Chasing" where someone tries a stunt that puts themselves into harms way to try and become super.

Q:  Are there different types of variants?
A:  Yes, many different classes and ranks of all abilities but there are still too few to study in detail yet. In the background the government and independent researchers are working on it. This is what they know so far.

There are Three types of Variants:

Statics - Develop powers but never change

Progressives - Develop powers that evolve in a generally linear format

Unstables - Develop powers that can change dramatically, completely, or even uncontrollably. Sometimes called "Powereds"

Q:  In game how do we know if we can beat a villain or group of villains.
A:  The GM (me) will tell you in thread what the difficultly level of the event/confrontation will be. It will be up to the players to write their interactions based on that information. Things should be challenging to be fun. But I'll let you know if it's a cake walk or not. Also, self directed threads may have minor events and confrontations where you can have them play out however you want. So lots of chances to show off your powers and feel truly super.

Q:  How do we resolve character vs character conflict?
A:  This is a story about heroes. There shouldn't be any character vs character conflict accept where emotional drama happens. If that occurs or players want to train/spar with one another they should work it out among themselves how it's going to go down and always be willing to share the spotlight and take some falls if required. If it's not fun, just don't do it. Write yourself out of the scene or don't start the scene to begin with.

Q:  How long ago did the Breakthroughs begin?
A:  It's been several months now since the media started picking up the stories. At first the mainstream media thought of it as hoaxes but once the big flashy stories began to surface, videos, etc, they could no longer deny the truth. Only the government and some researchers know the date that the cosmic energy bathed our planet but even they don't know how long after that before the breakthroughs began.

Q: How does the pairing up work? Do I have to be in a pair when I join?
A: The concept is that people will be paired up for their initial entrance to the game. It's a shared backstory type of thing just to establish relationships. The relationship can be anything, friends, neighbors, relatives, couples.. it doesn't matter that's up to the players. Keep it simple if you want or make it complex, it's up to you.

You can either join as part of a pair or individually. If you come as an individual I'll pair you up myself with the next person to come along.

Then I'll be teaming everyone up into 4 player teams.  Some odd numbers may happen if odd number people enter the game.

Outside of the teams, people will be free to intermingle. But teams will also have their own "Events" that take place in team based threads.

General Appearance: Golden light brown eyes, hair is blonde - long straight with a few natural waves. Build is slim athletic that could be described as more of model-like. Also has flawless complexion and no scarring thanks to her healing ability.  Day to day dress is casual jeans or leggings, long sleeve tops, cute jackets (usually her favorite white faux leather,) Black glitter lace up hiking boots or track shoes.

Personality Traits: She's friendly and always has a ready smile for people. She loves ice cream, music, and travelling. Dislikes spicy or bitter foods. She's aiming to be a hero partially for the protection that being around other heroes provides and because she feels that she can help in a way that most heroes can't.  She loves her powers but finds the emotional burden of not being able to heal everyone all of the time is emotionally taxing.  This results in her often absorbing herself in distraction to not think about it. Make no mistake though, her smiling face and sparkling almost glowing golden eyes mask years of living on the streets and seeing some of the worst elements of society. She has past.

Powers/Special abilities:

• Holy Light:  When she puts her hands on or within inches of someone she can channel a healing light into any living thing and heal it almost completely of any injury short of death. The worse the injuries the longer it takes to heal them so it's always a race against time if they are gravely injured but the whole process never takes more then a few minutes. She can mend broken bones, can reattach severed limbs if it could normally be surgically attached. Her powers heal wounds and mend bodies but they don't prevent all scarring or side effects of catastrophic injuries.  What she can do is basically give the body months worth of healing in a matter of moments, as if you had the best medical care or a miracle cure.
  
  The special effects of the ability appear like radiant golden light washing over the person with sparkling lights dancing in a mist before sublimating into nothing.
  
  While casting her ability, angelic translucent golden wing-like light spreads out from behind her.
  
  Ability is limited by draining her physically, the exhaustion is like running. A minor injury is like running a one hundred metre dash, broken bones healing is like running a mile, and healing someone from near death is like running a marathon.   
• Meditative Self Healing:  Same effect as above but on her self. If she's unconscious her body will slip into a sort of comatose state while it begins the self healing process. 
• Nova Light:  This is a bright burst of light equal to the stunning capacity of a stun grenade at the maximum level of intensity.   
• Flight:  She's recently developed the ability to summon her ethereal translucent angelic wings and fly. At the moment she can't lift more then a 100 lbs with her but she can fly about as fast as a bird, hitting speeds of about 50 to 60 mph or up to 100 mph on a dive. 

Breakthrough
Astrid and her adoptive father were at home getting dinner read and arguing about her going out with some friends. The home was log cabin deep in the woods which is why he didn't like her going out late at night as the roads could be treacherous coming home to late. It was a common disagreement between them. He always lost as she was an adult now but it took time to convince him she would be careful and safe. The sound of vehicles in the driveway startled them both but before she could ask if he was expecting company. Men poured out of the vehicles in the yard. Her father grabbed one of the many guns he owned and began blindly firing out the window at the men. A hail of bullets pelted the room where they stood and he soon fell. Men dressed in full military style black op apparel stormed in and dragged his bleeding body out into the driveway. Astrid was soon dragged out as well. Facing an execution in the driveway, confused and frightened Astrid's angelic glowing wings burst forth and the Nova Light ability that she soon discovered went off at the same time blinding her attackers. With his last breath he urged her to run...

Star as she is known now is the living embodiment of an angel. In her artistic mind she dreamed of angels being filled with holy healing light and having a natural glow and beautiful glowing wings. These are the things that she manifested that day.






Personal Bio
She ranaway after the murder of her adoptive father and came to the streets of Superior City where she is now making a living as an Instagram model and was recently recruited by the cities newly formed Super Hero team.

A known quantity, the public are aware of her existence and she has no secret identity. With no family or close ties left she has nothing to hide. It's been a huge boost to her following on Instagram and she has become a city celebrity. Although her abilities don't lend themselves well to big daring rescues or epic battles, she's gained some nationwide attention due to her healing abilities and saving several lives when called on.

Several months ago. The details are a little unsure as news outlets wouldn't have believed the stories as credible at first. Not until the big stories began to hit.

The character that I posted, Star is a good example. She can heal people by concentrating and can bring someone back from near death but she can only heal one person at a time and doing something like that would be the equivalent of running a marathon. She'd collapse with exhaustion if she did it.

So that demonstrates a major ability but with major weaknesses to it. So she has a few minor abilities to go with it.

Some direct levels of power maybe:

Minor Strong - your a professional athlete level of strong
Major Strong = Can roll a car over by yourself (that's roll it, not lift it) - car is about 1 to 1.5 tons. Think of the world's strongest men

Minor electric blasts - Can be shot a 100feet and hits with the force of a stun gun
Major electric blasts - hits like lightning but only within a few hundred feet and is hard to control. (it's lightning! everyone in 15 feet is going to get zapped some as well)

The general idea is that we want a lot of room for growth as the characters develop. There should be weaknesses to go with strengths and some sort of limitations. Trying to strike an overall balance. At the next level during the game we'll probably double that level of strength as an example.

At first, your strong enough to handle a couple ordinary people without much problem but if you get jumped by a gang with weapons there could be problems.

Most ordinary Breakthroughs only develop parlor tricks, our characters will be more powerful than that.

General Appearance: Green eyes, dirty blond hair. Krystal has the body of a dancer and tends to be a little heavy handed on the makeup. She tends to wear vintage outfits and hair styles although not exclusively.

Personality Traits: Krystal has always had a warm bubbly personality. She is a bit on the shy side and is a bit more of a sense of modesty than most dancers. She is always up for a bit of friendly debate or going out swimming with her friends. She can be a little bit of a flirt with those she feels comfortable around, regardless of if she likes them or not.

Powers/Special abilities:

• Invisibility: While Krystal can turn completely invisible it is limited to herself becoming invisible and not any of her clothing or things she is holding. Also, unknown to her but a notable flaw, only invisible in the visible spectrum, infra-red cameras and the like will still see her.
• Telekinesis: Krystal can move objects out to about a range of 200 ft. She doesn't have to be able to see the object but does have to know its location. She is however still bound by the laws of physics, so if she tries to force chuck a car it won't budge instead, she will go flying in the opposite direction she tried moving the car. Similarly, it takes about as much physical energy as moving that much mass normally would. (So basically, you can calculate the work done on any object to figure out how many calories it would burn.)   

Breakthrough
March of her Senior Year:

Krystal was in the locker room after working on the lifeguarding unit of her PE class. She was rinsing her hair out with those anti-chlorine shampoos in one of those showers just awkwardly in the middle of the room talking with her close friend Sarah about Michael whom, she had a crush on, when one of the class bullies, over heard her conversation. Before Krystal really knew what was going on, she found herself being dragged along by her hair to the locker-room entrance before being shoved outside. The hard shove was forceful enough that Krystal stumbled out several paces trying to regain her balance before tripping over herself and falling squarely at the feet one of her classmates and in full view of a sizeable chunk of her class! Already incredibly embarrassed she began to try to reclaim her feet when she noticed she had fallen at Michael's feet, oh and the erection that was clearly evident through his speedo. Krystal suddenly flushed an even deeper crimson than she already was, or at least she would have if she had not also suddenly turned invisible. That said you could still see soap bubbles all over her body and through her hair giving an incredibly good outline of her body. Then with a mental heave she did not know possible a large cloud of steam suddenly billowed out from the girl’s locker room, enough to obscure her soap-suds outline. Letting out a squeak of shame she ran back into the locker room and into a bathroom stall and curled up in the corner and cried for a while.

A little while later after most of the class had finished changing Sarah came and knocked softly on the stall door and coaxed Krystal into telling her what had happened after getting pushed out and comforted her until Krystal felt ready to finish getting ready. That night while watching the news in her sweats and eating some ice cream she was mortified to see that someone, somehow, had videotaped the full thing and that it had been from a good angle to get a full frontal view as she came stumbling out. The news feed blurred everything out and mostly focused on the arisal of a new Variant, but she had a sinking feeling that the unedited version was at that very moment circulating the school.

For EVERYONE - About the pairing up part:

The concept is that people will be paired up for their initial entrance to the game. It's a shared backstory type of thing just to establish relationships. The relationship can be anything, friends, neighbours, relatives, couples.. it doesn't matter that's up to the players. Keep it simple if you want or make it complex, it's up to you.

You can either join as part of a pair or individually. If you come as an individual I'll pair you up myself with the next person to come along (just let me know.)

Then I'll be teaming everyone up into 4 player teams.  Some odd numbers may happen if odd number people enter the game.

Outside of the teams, people will be free to intermingle. But teams will also have their own "Events" that take place in team based threads.
