Roll or take the option it gives you. I know I took the "average" cause that ended up being 42 HP. Gear, start with the class package and then add 600 GP (the table in the DMG says to roll 1d10x25 and add the result to 500 but I'm flexing DM muscle to say we all rolled a 4 on that)

Foxy Oni: Each class has listed progression for HP. Gear is usually defaulted what you get via background and class choice but as 5th level we should got some magic gear by now.

A decent level of lewdness for the world to start. Around Interspecies Reviewer level at least if not higher since I want to encounter perverse foes. :)

I'll explain. :) Interspecies Reviewers (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Manga/InterspeciesReviewers) was a manga/anime where a group of adventurers went around exploring the brothels in the red light district where each fantasy species had a special theme. (Also, I updated my equipment list to reflect the 600 gp rule)

I warmly recommend watching the series, 12 episodes total atm and not easy to find in legal channels as it got banned from them (being perhaps more lewd than managers said sites expected).

Well, don't forget choices like background, archetypes, races, etc. can change the flavor of a class so what you come up with might have a totally different feel than someone using the same class.

Most classes also have enough archetypes that you can have an entire party of one class and they're still all unique. It isnt one path per class anymore.

As others have said, archetype and background all largely affect how you will play your class. As background features add extra flavor.

Example; play rogue but with a noble background. Your not back-alley street urchin; you got noble connections which means able enter fancy parties or have few devoted servants (NPC's loyal to you) do your bidding as you travel far from the influence of your noble family. Archetypes for rogues include Arcane Scoundrel (rogue with magic and magic hand tricks), Thief (expert in more roguish arts), Assassin (you stab very hard on people and later learn arts of excellent disguises and poison use).

Also races can affect a lot; wood elf would be a bit odd pick as they have usually no noble families but is your char; so there may be some nobility that lives in backwoods in rural woodland to safeguard the ancient elven site. Drows/Dark elves are fitting albeit need good reason be surface. High elves are the haughty lot and racially you learn a cantrip (arcane sort), so that influences your rogue as well knowing one useful magic 'trick' from childhood lessons.

Could go for most straightforward; Greatweapon Mastery (-5 to hit but +10 to dmg oh yeah! Also crits cleave!). Or go fun like tavern brawler (become grapple and tavern fight expert and using improvised weapons and bit bonus to Str or Con).

I forget the specifics, but I believe XGtE has a Common magical item for just that purpose.
