I am putting out some feelers for a possible Pokémon rp group. I could do up to 6 players but we can run it with as few as three. It would be based off of one I did previously but that life problems prevented me from continuing. It’d be an original story in an original region with Pokémon from all 8 generations available. Here is the pitch for the original game I ran that I’d like to try and run again.

Welcome to the Arcaia region, a land shrouded in mystery. Though this region hosts no native pokémon if it's own, it is home to pokémon from all other known regions. Due to this strange phenomenon it has attracted a large amount of attention from researchers and trainers alike. Boasting a booming economy and countless new towns Arcaia is the new frontier of the pokémon world. But strange rumors have been cropping up about some extremely aggressive pokémon. They have been said to attack unprovoked and to be terrorizing humans and pokémon alike. What is the cause of these strange rumors, and what does it mean for the region? Only time will tell...

How is combat handled?  What about character creation?  Limitations on started Pokemon?

I have two possible systems for combat, a simple one and a more advanced one depending on what players decide would work best for the group.

Character creation is however you want to build your character, just make sure all are over 18. This is not a sexual RP but if players want to have romance this just makes that easier. Since no people are native to Arcaia though you will need to choose what region your character comes from, and why have they come to Arcaia. Are they a trainer wishing to try their hand at the new league, a researcher looking to study the wild Pokémon, a ranger looking to protect this wild frontier?

For starter Pokémon everyone can start with up to 2 Pokémon but I ask that they be around levels 10-15 for starting strength. This will be decided in more detail once a system is decided on but any Pokémon is fine by me so long as they are not mythical or legendary. Think mostly first form or baby Pokémon for the beginning.

Will there be a shady character I can buy a Magikarp for 500 pokedollars?

ZephySempai

Yup. I'm playing this. Flag is planted. Book is marked. Idc what the story is, I'm in. I got Pokemains out the wazoo. Let's go. Let's do this thing!

So yeah, I'm interested :)

Golden pokéball and all! You know it’s considered the luckiest pokémon of all after all.

Thunder Splash

What regions would you guys want your characters to be from?

ZephySempai

I'm personally a fan of the earlier regions, but I'm thinking of going with Johto for my character.

Also. How is our starting Pokémon team going to be handled? Are we doing the classic 1 base evolution Pokémon or are we free to just pick whatever we want? I'm down for either/or. Regardless, I can't wait to team up with some other trainers.

Also, what did you have in mind for a battle system? I saw you mentioned either a simple or detailed system. What would be the differences between the two?

They can be from any region, even ones like orre from Pokémon colosseum.

For starters you can pick whatever you want just make it the first form. For example the last time I tried to run this one trainer had a mime jr. and alolan vulpix, another had an abra and mayuri, and another had an ekans and kangaskhan just to make a few. So it’s whatever you want to start with really.

For the simple battle system I came up with a really simple dice rolling system with a few modifiers for type advantages and evolved forms and what not so combat still had chance and strategy built into it but it allowed us to focus less on stats and rolls and more on story. For the more complex system I offered to use the Pokémon Tabletop United game as the system. And I let players vote in the beginning on which system we would want to use and whether or not they wanted to use a more complicated and involved system or not.

ZephySempai

Ya know I've never taken a look at Pokémon United. I probably should in my spare time. Might get some inspiration from it. What style did you go with the last time you ran the game and how do you think it affected the pacing?

How many Pokémon do we get to start with? I'm used to a single starter, but definitely wouldn't mind having two. Whichever works for you let me know.

I'll probably have a rough draft of my trainer up sometime either tonight or tomorrow depending on how my jellies are feeling.

We did the simpler version last time and it helped a lot with pacing. Instead of numerous rolls per battle we rolled once to see who would win the battle and then does it out for fun with some good flavor.

You can start with 2, most people did before but it’s up to you, just run it by me with tour trainer and I’ll most likely approve it so long as it isn’t legendary.

Here's my guy. I'll finish up the short history a little later. Let me know if there's anything that needs changes or adjustments.

Name: Daiki Gorro

Appearance: Daiki Gorro is 6’2 of relentless fury. He’s the type of dog with a bite worse than his bark, and boy does he bark. Solidly built, you’ll have better luck swaying his mind rather than his body. Once he gets his hands around something, you’ll be hard pressed to take it from him. His imposing form tends to act as a magnet towards most people; where they’re the positive end, he is easily the negative. It’s a true shame, considering the attractiveness of his long blue hair. Gaze at it too long, however, and you might meet the piercing gold of his hungry eyes.

Age: 19

Sexuality: Heterosexual

Region of origin: Johto

Occupation: DOMINATOR! But technically, a trainer.

Pokémon: Totodile & Snorunt

Personality: Daiki is not the type to overcome obstacles. He demolishes them and leaves nothing behind: not even the dust to scrape into an urn. His confidence roars like a raging blizzard and smothers everything beneath the weight of his enormity. Daiki knows no fear. Retreat is a futile effort reserved only for his prey. No dam is mighty enough to contain his raging determination once his mind is set upon a goal. Not even he can contain all that is himself. Be it along or allied with others, Daiki Gorro will do whatever it takes to be the greatest at EVERYTHING no matter what.

Bio: Daiki lived a simple life in a simple home raised by two simple parents. From a young age, Daiki was brought up to always believe in himself and do his very best, but to always know that his parents would love him no matter what. He was happy. They were happy. Things began to change for Daiki when he entered into the public school system, however. The lessons of truth, kindness, and intelligence being the key to success were challenged harshly in this new environment. His parents insisted that he stick to these values, even if the others called them losers as well. Daiki, unable to adjust, became an outcast. He didn’t mind this life too much. Though things became increasingly difficult for him due to constant bullying, He excelled in sports and academics. He got along with his teachers, and his parents loved him. That was all he really needed.

The events that forever changed this happy boy’s life began his first year of highschool. He had been working up the courage to confess his feelings to a girl he’d known for some time now. He decided after making the track team that he would spill his heart to her. Tryouts came & went, and, even though he did not have the best times, Daiki was accepted onto the team. Fulfilling his promise to himself, he confessed, and was met with a harsh rejection. The girl would rather be with number one, not runner up. This struck Daiki hard, but he was taught to never give up. So instead he trained and practiced as hard as he could before challenging his classmate for the number one spot. The race was on and, just as Daiki was about to cross the finish line in first place, he was pushed from behind and knocked to the ground. He lost, and as he cried out foul play, he found himself surrounded by others who mocked him. Frustration devoured him and he lashed out at the racer that pushed him, but he was outnumbered by bullies and badly beaten.

No one came to his rescue.

He’s had much time to reflect, alone, on his shortcomings. He decided that he would never again be looked down upon or bullied. That he would live a life of greatness. He would be the best at everything, no matter what. And anyone who would attempt to stand in his way?

He would crush them.

Interested! ;)

Name: Sepia Cacao

Appearance: Officer Sepia suspects everyone, squinting at and scrutinizing each person he sees. Being one of the most prejudiced people around, who depends on only his observations, he comes across as someone with a savior complex. Someone who has to involve himself with anything he thinks concerns him. His bristled silver hair appears beaten down under gravity, thick like wintry wolf fur. His turquoise eyes are thoughtful, pensive, and judgmental. His sharply downturned lips give away that while he is certainly not happy with his life at all, he can see the beauty yet the lie in it. He looks like he expects the worst. With people, he is overconfident and more comfortable with interrogating them on the spot. However with Pokémon, Sepia is awkward and raises a hand to signal to them to keep their distance. As hardened and dour as he acts, his boyish, lanky look makes people take him less seriously. Which in turn makes him unexpectedly bray laughter.
Age: 19
Sexuality: Gay
Region of origin: Orre
Occupation: Officer
Pokémon: Piplup and Honedge
Personality: Officer Sepia believes he's heaven-sent to close and clean this world's wounds but knows he's still heavily flawed. He's a hedonist, a lover of luxury, and ridiculously shallow. He denies any claim to depression when it is obviously read on his face and in his sad tone. Sepia says that's normal, that people has to accept and adapt to the concept that reality is about having a lot of nothing. If you want something, even if it's reaching for the moon, you better be prepared to throw every Pokéball you have at it. He knows true and perfect love is elusive and unattainable. But there's no other life he'd rather have than a whirlwind romance with someone who never settles for less. However, there is a shadow side to everything, even to Arcaia. He expects as much that if he'd see anything to justice, he would have to balance between resorting to secrecy and use of martial force. Prefers Steel, Ghost, Fairy, and Dragon types. Noble and stoic approach to life's passions.
Bio: When he was in Orre, his tight-knit Cacao family attempted a honest life's work out of selling merchandise. But the desert was harsh and merciless. Its resources were scarce. Crime was rife, thefts were reported daily, and no justice was ever found. This was why Sepia was told even at a young age he was expected to train his Pokémon brutally enough to help safeguard the family business's supply. It was his pride and honor. It was all he thought about. It was his destiny. Him against the world. He toiled for years but it was not enough. His Pokémon were stolen. The shop was ransacked and cleaned out. Because of crime, he watched his family crumble apart, moving to other Regions and sending each other Mail with promises for a visit very soon. He never saw them again. So for a couple of years, Sepia did nothing but sleep. He had to die to be reborn, and eventually with nothing left, he felt like a fool for being the last Cacao in Orre. Having followed the footsteps of his family, he arrived to Arcaia. He quietly moved in, became an Officer, and was ordered to get Licensed and some Starter Pokémon. He insisted that he needed real steel, something that doesn't easily die or crumble.

That’s one mean looking piplup. Love the character so far. I’ll go ahead and throw up my character as well, I can see that water starters are a running theme at the moment. Glad to see y’all have good taste in pokémon. :P

Name: Daniel LeBeau

Appearance: Daniel wears a blue, sleeveless, collared top and black spandex shorts. She also wears black and white gloves and keeps her poke balls in a punch on her hip. Her gray hair hangs to the sides of her face and she always wears her blue bandana. She is very lithe and slender, standing at 5'8".
Age: 18
Sexuality: Lesbian
Region of origin: Hoenn
Occupation: Pokémon Trainer
Pokémon: Mudkip, Ralts
Personality: Daniel is adventurous. She lives for the thrill of roughing it and being out in the wilds with all there is to see. Usually care free excitable, but she can be serious when it comes to pokémon and battling. Daniel lives for pokémon battles. She can be a little blunt and hard on people as well, but she usually means well. Daniel has a fire in her that makes her a natural born trainer, and she dreams of one day being the champion.
Bio: Daniel was born into a pokémon researching family. Her mother and father wanted to learn all there was to know about the Cave of Origins in their home town of Sootopolis City, and the legendary pokémon that once dwelled there. Daniel thought it was cool learning about legendary pokémon when she was little, but as she grew she became more and more interested in all pokémon as well as the world outside her hometown. With the eighth hoenn league gym right around the corner the girl got to watch all sorts of powerful pokémon trainers come and go, seeking the last badge to allow them to enter the tournament at the end of every year. She wanted so badly to be one of those trainers traveling the region and raising their teams to incredible heights. But her dreams of adventure were not coming anytime soon. Wanting their only child to follow in their footsteps Daniel's parents stressed the importance of her education, not letting her go off on some pokémon journey when other kids her age were embarking to leave their mark on the world.

Fate however was on Daniel's side. One day a weary trainer showed up in Sootopolis City with an eye for talent. He wasn't there for the gym but was interested in her parents' research. While visiting the man saw the young girl's potential as a pokémon trainer. Offering to teach her what it meant to be a trainer the man managed to broker a deal on behalf of the little girl with her parents. If she finished her schooling with top marks, he would help her begin her pokémon journey, offering to cover any expenses she would need.

When the day finally came a few years later the man kept his word. After a few lessons on how to catch pokémon and for skills needed to survive in the wild Daniel found herself aboard the SS Anne, bound for the new land of Arcaia, with her two new companions beside her and her dreams just over the horizon.

Lol, makes you wonder who's good cop, bad cop!
Nice, gooo Team Water! I like Daiki and Daniel, this could get interesting xD

Zayk

Keeping an eye on this for the time being, since I'm not sure what direction it'll be taking. Though I can't help but remark at the current cast; "A gay, lesbian, and straight guy walk into a roleplay..."  ::)

Lol yes! They're all definitely platonic, I rly dig it xD

How will the group be interacting with each other?  Will there be cooperation, PvP, a bunch of different stories?

If you join up Zayk we would have 4 players interested, for 5 including my character. I’d say that’s definitely enough to get things started.

All of those are viable options. I plan on running the story more like the manga and the anime than the video games. So everyone will be arriving to the region together aboard the SS Anne and will due to special circumstances meet the local Pokémon professor and become Pokédex holders. Again this will be like the manga where just a select few people actually get a Pokédex, they are a rare piece of tech. And from there characters can decide whether they want to travel as a group or split up and be rivals. And even if you stay together as a group friendly PvP battles or ones that are called for in story are allowed.

There are two possible systems for battle. The complex one is Pokémon table top United if people want a more in depth system, if not it’s just a simple system i home brewed where a high character fighting rolls one dice with a few potential modifiers for type advantage. I can post that one if you’d like and PTU is a available free online to look at. I’m leaning more towards the simple system just because it makes pacing a lot easier with the story. Battle won’t take as long.

AribethAmkiir

how do you determine who the higher level character is?

Also, how will catching Pokemon be handled?  Or wild encounters?  Will we just decide which Pokemon we catch, or roll a 1d890 and that'll show what Pokemon we encounter?

It’s mainly 1st form is a d6, 2nd a d8, final d10, and that can be adjusted for if a Pokémon only has 1 or 2 forms at certain points where they would be a high enough level they would upgrade to a higher die.

Wild Pokémon will be catchable just like a regular battle, if you can win the battle you can catch them.

As for who is where I have a region map with routes drawn up and I have assigned what Pokémon will appear in what area. So if there are specific Pokémon you want just let me know and I can give you a heads up when you will be reaching an area that has them. So it’s part chance but also can be worked into the narrative if you have a specific team you want to build. This will be more story driven and less mechanics driven for a better story in my opinion. Unless you all want something more up to chance, I can tweak it a bit if needed.
