In the future, I'd like to pick up a 6th edition Call of Cthulhu game here. Just testing the waters to see how popular such a game would be.

To reiterate, this is an interest check for a FUTURE game, and only that if I get enough people biting. Just keen to see how popular the game would be.

There would be a much bigger focus on story than erotica. If sex happens between characters then that's their choice, but don't expect to get fisted by Mythos beings or such - that's not their kind of thing. ;D

Certainly seems to be a popular choice! I'll see how my other games get on in terms of being started up, and then look again at this to see if people are still interested.

All is not well in Arkham, Massachusetts. Professor Richard Kemper, renown archaeologist-turned-recluse, has gone missing, and all investigations into the matter have turned up little; the police believe that old age and a faltering mind have contributed to his disappearance - but not everyone agrees.

Miss Cynthia Hahn, Professor Kemper's housekeeper, thinks that something terrible has happened to the gentleman, but without evidence the woman's words fall upon deaf ears. Instead, she has turned to those individuals with whom Richard Kemper shared a close confidence: those men and women who, being experts in their fields, the old Professor exchanged correspondence and even friendship.

Whether borne by loyalty, curiosity, or other motive, these individuals have journeyed to the Professor's manor house just outside of Arkham in the hope of shedding some light upon the mysterious disappearance of Richard Kemper.

Game Summary: The Mystery of Richard Kemper is an original story, taking place in the horrific and twisted world detailed within the pages of H.P. Lovecraft. Herein, investigators begin peeling back the veil sheltering mankind from the existence of archaic and mind-blasting horrors, and do their utmost to survive and overcome them. The dangers are unfathomable, both to their bodies and minds; with fortune, teamwork, and skill, perhaps they might make it through relatively intact.

Disclaimers: This story, like many of those written by Lovecraft, deals with horrific and mature themes, and thus won't be suitable for everyone. Likewise, the game is set during a period of history - 1920s America - when common place values differed significantly to what we know now. This should also be kept in mind by those seeking to play in, or follow, this game.

Game System: We will be using the Sixth Edition rules of the Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game.

Disclaimer: Whilst I am a lover of Lovecraft's works, and an experienced Game Master/Storyteller/Dungeon Master, I have never before run a game of Call of Cthulhu, and so ask players to bear with me whilst I get used to the system.

Applications and Character Creation: Before rolling up a character, I'd like interested players to get in touch with me and provide me with examples of their IC posts from other games - these games can be of any genre, though posts from horror stories are particularly welcome. I ask for interested players to send me these sample posts to ensure that I take on people who are likely to provide detailed and thoughtful responses to Keeper and player posts, and who are enthused about bringing their character to life in a game where tension, horror, and description are essential components. Whilst this approach might not sit well with everyone, I've found detailed and descriptive posts to be necessary components in a game like Call of Cthulhu.

That said, I am willing to take on players who have never tried Call of Cthulhu before, provided they have - or have access to - the rulebook, and have some knowledge about the kind of game it is. I am willing to work with enthusiastic players to learn the system, provided they've done enough research before to know what style of game this is.

Once I've chosen between three and five players for the game, I'll then invite them to formally make their characters, with the following notes in mind:

  • The Mystery of Richard Kemper takes place in 1920s America, specifically in and around Arkham, Massachusetts (and, potentially, other places). The characters do not have to be residents of Arkham, and could in fact come from anywhere, provided they would agree to travel to the town in response to Cynthia Hahn's concerns.
  • Characters are to be created using the steps outline in the Core Rulebook; players may assign their eight rolled characteristics as they wish, provided neither INT nor SIZ has a final result of 8 or less, nor EDU a result of 6 or less.
  • Characters should belong to a profession - or possess a suitable personal history - that would result in their being contacted over a prolonged period of time by Richard Kemper, asking for advice and insight on a variety of topics as he delved deeper into his archaeological studies.
I expect all player dice rolls to be made using this site's dice roller (ask me for my ID), to ensure authenticity and allow everyone to feel comfortable that every character stat and check is being made fairly. Rolls that I am not a witness to will not be considered valid, and the player in question will be asked to re-roll.

I believe sharing the books over the site is a violation of the site rules, I'm afraid. If you do acquire your own, however, you're welcome to get back in touch!

Okay! Looks like I'll have another game to prep today!

Those who haven't sent me any writing samples before, can you please do so? Doesn't have to be horror, but it helps. I'll get to working on this one after all my other games are set up and mobile.

I had a character idea I’d like to try but the games never get past the start.. I’ll see if can find the stars, sheet and give you a few samples. We PM them to you correct?

It's unfortunate, but people have things come up. RPing is a luxury, not a necessity, so it's best to just keep trying at the games until one of them takes without pessimism.

Yes please, send them to me through PM. I'm spending today and tomorrow getting my current games moving before I focus on Alien and Call of Cthulhu, though these will be the next things I turn my attentions to.

Malkavian

Depending on how quickly I get things sorted tonight/tomorrow for my other games, I'll be looking at making a board for this. Again, if you are interested, but haven't sent me a PM with writing samples, please do so as soon as you can! If you have sent me samples and I've answered you, please do me a favour and post again to this thread, reminding me that we've spoken and that you're still interested in the game (helps me to remember player numbers and usernames).

Okay, the GM reviewed my idea I’ll pull out my pdf and HL to build up Emerald Anne Dante, dealer in ‘semi-authentic’ papers

Nice. But keep in mind that no character is approved until I've seen a full sheet and given it the okay at that time. ;)

Absolutely just figured I’d offer her as a possible tie I, pending approval. Hopefully I’ll have the sheet to you tonight. Having to look thru my HUGE pdf archive to find 6th edition

Malkavian

No problem! Keep in mind that I might not respond to your PM immediately, or even for a few days (possibly), as I have three other games to update, and one to set up (Alien), before I turn my focus to this.

I've made a thread. Please move all chatter and character creation discussion over there - if you haven't sent me a writing sample and I've asked for it, please do so before moving over there.

Malkavian

As a reminder, people should move to the above thread if they're playing. If you don't post there before characters are approved and we begin, you'll have missed out. :D
