Game Information

• Raft College was created by Heartsink. Bekah Boo and I have taken over as GMs. Those who had put interest in beforehand and haven't heard anything, do message us!
• This game is about undergraduate students at Raft College, a private university in the Boston area.
• The focus of the game will be on students and their non-academic life while at Raft College, while keeping in mind that some students do in fact study and go to classes.
• No staff characters will be accepted.
• This game will be a sandbox freeform game with little GM involvement.
• This game will be in the NC: Human-Freeform Small Groups section.

Wants

• Character development. College students are finding themselves, just coming out of a tough high school experience for many. College changes people or anchors them into what they are.
• Character flaws. As many as possible, by all means. Humans make mistakes all the time. Humans do dumb things. No one is perfect.
• College students. No self-made billionaire or millionaire student, though rich parents are fine. No mob children, serial killer, etc.
• No High School tropes. Stereotypical high school-type bullying is not a thing in university. There's no detention, etc. If your character mocks people for no reason, they will get in trouble. College bullying exists but it is subtle and almost always non-violent.

BACKGROUND:
For Cal, life was practically handed to him on a silver platter. He was born as the oldest of three to a dad who worked in sales and a mother who worked as a nurse at a nursing home. Instilled with a sense of a big brother's responsibilities and being dubbed as the "man of the house" when daddy was away on work, he looked after his siblings. There were the squabbles and the harassments, of course, but as he got older, he tried his best to be there for them, and he liked to think he was close to both of them.

His most memorable moment? In his early school years, he became best friends with a deaf boy in his class. Cal saved his life in the fifth grade after giving him the Heimlich maneuver. It spurred on a school assembly, and in it, the day he was the hero was named after him.

Arguably his biggest struggle during the first eighteen years of his life was with his sexuality. His parents were pretty firm Methodists, and his dad showed discomfort toward homosexuality, so he stayed in the closet through high school and dated girls to keep up appearances.

Cal performed well enough in both baseball and academics to gain acceptance into his dad's alma mater. In his first year at Raft, he kicked down the closet door with sperm a-spurtin', he joined a frat, and he lost his spot on the baseball team due to a sloppy performance. That...wasn't part of the plan, but alright, he tried not to let it bring him down.

It disappointed his dad, although what disappointed him more, and his mom, too, was having his son come out to him. Cal made the decision about a month before the next academic year was to start up. His dad said nothing, just walked out of the living room and retired to his office. After the agonizing weeks that followed, Cal was thankful when it was time to return to the dorms.

FLAWS:

• Flippant - Cal generally faces things with humor and a sense that things will always turn out alright. Often, he fails to understand the gravity of a situation, and sometimes even actions, until it's too late.
• Sophomoric - While he can enjoy the more sophisticated forms of humor, farts are still among the top five funniest things in the world.
• Meddlesome - He's been working on this and has gotten better since starting college, but he has a bit of a hero complex that sees him taking initiative in helping people with their problems, whether they ask for it or not. He also has a thing for trying to fix broken people.
• Overconfident - Up until the past year, things had come so easily for him that he overestimates his abilities.
• Prideful - Cal likes to help people with their problems but doesn't want the same in return because he wants to be the bigger person. Between this and his overconfidence, it's quite upsetting for him when life comes along and pops his bubble. Whether he's open about it in front of others is another matter.
• Self-conscious - After an unpleasant coming out to his parents, he's a little more sensitive about how others regard him.
• Weak-willed - It's hard for him to resist the temptation of a good time. He also balks at the idea of having to actually put forth an effort, unless it's in the gym, and has developed a habit of shying away from doing so.
• Self-Convincing - He's pretty good at buying his own BS. When sharing that same BS with someone else, it may or may not come with a tell that he may conveniently wave away.
• Budding Alcoholic - He has the propensity for a dependency that's likely to develop as long as he continues partying.

BACKGROUND:
Born in Bordeaux, France to an school teacher and author Madeleine's life could be seen as comfortable. Stability, large estate that she and her siblings often got into trouble in, the lap of luxury; the little silver spoon in her mouth is fairly easy to spot. The arts had always been a large portion of the family's business starting from her mother who's early career had been on broadway until her retirement, and her father's well to do fantasy novels that allowed his family to live comfortably. From a young age Madeleine's zest for life as well as bright presence made it little doubt the girl would follow in her mother's footsteps, as by the time she was 10 the bubbly girl had already auditioned for a number of minor roles for plays within the city. Actually breaking out from 'understudy' to big time actress however was what spurred on Madeleine's request for higher learning, and in the States of all places.

Naturally there was some confusion as to why, after all there were a number of brilliant institutes closer to home. Though when pressed Madeleine admitted a part of the request was to experience the States and other peers her age, that the experience would further round out her profile if she wished to be as grand as her mother. Reluctantly her parents agreed despite how distant Madeleine's choice would take her, having their blessings none the less and of course their worry. A university campus in the States was a far cry from the rigid boarding schools in which Madeleine had spent her schooling, but after a year she seemed happy, so of course her worried parents felt a least a little ease for their oldest daughter.

FLAWS:

• Overly Affectionate - At times Madeleine can be overbearing to those around her as she invades personal spaces without a thought, that while she means well, it can be seen as invasive and has been scolded a number of times for it. She often will have to catch herself from throwing herself at a person even if she is not acquainted with them.While Madeleine does not see this as overtly sexual she can often send the wrong signal with pecks to the cheeks or even lips, usually thinking of nothing to hang off of others as she goes about conversation.
• Language Barriers - Even though her grasp of English is better than it had been when she first came to the states Madeleine still struggles with verbal misuse from time to time, usually involving slang or any sort of hyperbole. This often will result in misunderstanding as well as confusion, but after time she'll catch on.
• Self doubt - Often times, usually following a botched branch of friendship, Madeleine will feel as though she may never fully understand the American life. With so much to learn and the massive learning curve the pockets of doubt if she can indeed make it in the states does creep up. Thankfully it's not as often as it had been before, but still does creep it's head up every once and a while.
• Easily influenced - Due to Madeleine's rather innocent perspective of things it isn't too difficult to persuade her into something, whether it is a social fax pas or disguised as 'fun'. That while she may question the motive those with a sharp tongue may find it easy to take advantage of her kind and caring nature.
• Diving in headfirst - Madeleine lives for the spontaneous thrill of things, as she will often leap before she looks-Which is how she broke an ankle once- She needs little coaxing to dive into things that may need a little more thought, or to actually listen to the little voice in her head ringing like crazy. It's landed her in a few sticky situations at times and rather than learn from them, well...she just repeats the cycle.

Home of the Vipers!

The Vipers are the intercollegiate athletic teams that represent Raft College in the NCAA Division I level. Football, basketball, volleyball, track? You name it. Raft has it.

The men's basketball team is one of the most successful team in the NCAA and is considered by some analysts to be a powerhouse. Though they have had four players selected in the past five NBA Drafts, the Vipers have suffered through three head coaches in three years. Competing in the American Athletic Conference, the Vipers lost to Duke by one point in last year's March Madness despite the appointment of new head coach Doug Robertson during the season.

Mutch Hall is a co-ed residence on the west side of Campus, that houses 234 students on four floors. Separate male and female washrooms are available throughout the floors. There are common rooms on each floor and laundry facilities, study rooms, and a large party room in the basement. Four types of rooms are available. Since most of my long term plans with my current character have fallen through, and I can't figure out what to do with her, I'm going to probably create a guy character in the mean time until I figure something out.
