PREFACE

In 2017 the long-talked about mansion isolated in the Hollywood Hills, 2750 Solar Drive, was at last demolished. Since its start the mansion had been the focus of much local speculation, legend, and gossip. Unlike the kinder eyes of Angeline, though, this Los Angeles-borne tale began with stories of the ominous, and lead to a massacre. Believed to be cursed from the start, many 'paranoid' locals spoke of the possibility that the house was built upon Indian burial grounds. Still others speculated aliens had once landed there, fundamentally changing the reality around it. Regardless, tragedy of various types would befall the string of would-be owners. Even abandoned and seemingly displaced, the house itself seemed to somehow scream for attention. It refused to be forgotten. Throughout the period of disrepair police had to respond to a wave of incidents that took place there: rumors abounded that gangs and drug dealers had taken it over at one point, only for them and their operations to mysteriously vanish. Calls were made reporting strange satanic symbols and paraphernalia found by urban explorers who tread beyond the walls. On the 40 acres of ground isolating it from the rest of Hollywood, hikers repeatedly went missing, and dead animals were often found in unnatural displays. Sometimes, reports of strange intruders were called in by well-meaning citizens who walked the trails, often times their unsettled voices describing something altogether inhuman.

Perhaps of all tales, though, the one that finally lead to the owning firm razing it was the tale of the 'Solar Drive Boys'. Planned as a reality television stunt, the men who filed in that October can be seen on film, laughing, smiling, and talking about bright futures in Hollywood that they hoped the exposure would bring them. Fate, as it turned out, would see that few of them had a future at all. If the universe has any mercy, it can only be hoped that whatever peace can be had for the unliving was bestowed upon them as the wrecking ball finally cracked into the foundation, rendering the house, and subsequently their unmarked graves, into dust. Still, here lies a place for their unspoken stories...

WHAT IS IT?

Solar Drive Boys is intended to be a short-term game run by Xurtan and Intimate Ink with a focus on horror themes. The structure and plot are deliberately kept loose, as its main intention is to promote the creative writing spirit that comes from the horror-themed writings that often surface this time of year. The game is intended to be an easy fit into the 'teen-scream' genre where characters are often fighting a force far stronger than them, many meeting terrible fates, while some lucky few may make it to the end in the form of heroes, antiheroes, or simply survivors. Writers, of course, are encouraged to bring their own creativity and twists to the genre, while also being mindful of other writers and the integrity of the world.

Solar Drive Boys is a game firmly set in the Extreme Category. This is not a game where violence, character death, and debauchery dwell in the fringes. Much like watching a Teen Scream movie, themes of sex, drugs, and extreme violence should not only be acceptable, but considered inevitable. Players, of course, may steer themselves clear of some of this by wisely choosing character concepts and communicating to their fellow writers their preferences. Participation in the game, however, does imply a knowledge of its themes as well as the fate of most of its cast.

Players may opt to write two basic types of characters. These are the victims: young men who have accepted being on a Big Brother-esque reality show for either money, fame, a chance to party, or out of sheer boredom.  True to the horror genre, while most of them will die on the grounds of Solar Drive, players may elect to give them 'Final Boy' status, and be immune--even successfully fight against--the influences of the house. The other role is the monsters; this term can simply be used to describe a mind-frame, such as a serial killer, or it can be that the character is truly fantastical: werewolves, vampires, mummies, incubi, and the like. While most of the monsters will escape the game unscathed, some may be assigned a 'Vulnerable' status, making them open to a true death at the hand of a Final Boy. Those playing monsters will be encouraged to select a character that can pass as mortal until the time to move in on their prey is near in order to promote suspense. Consequently, part of each character sheet will be hidden from players, so that the status of a monster or victim is not always known.

FAQ

Q: Can I play multiple characters?
A: Players may play multiple characters if they have the time for them.

Q: What's the posting speed like?
A: Posting speed is supposed to be short and quippy. We’d like to see a post every three days, and at the absolute maximum every five. Characters who repeatedly fail to meet posting requirements without communicating to GMs will have all their characters written out of the game. Novels aren’t needed, take the time to write those five lines without agonizing about writing more; it will help move a game along that is intended to be short-term.

Q: So humans are victims?
A: Human characters are largely victims. If you don’t want your character to die, likely unexpectedly and bloody, don’t play one. This isn’t a matter of IF, it’s a matter of WHEN, except in the case of Final Boys. During character creation you may opt to name your character a 'Final Boy', indicating that they will survive the night, but we will be carefully watching the ratio of victims to killers to Final Boys.

Q: Then the monsters are always evil?
A: Killer characters are murderers, entities that feed on humans, abductors, and the like. There are no ‘helpful’ monsters, though some may be more scheming than others. A focused encounter with them is intended to remove the victim through death or some other more creative but horrifying means. Monster characters may opt to flag their character as ‘vulnerable to Final Boys’ in which case, rather than a ‘Final’ character eluding their grasp, they will somehow die/be removed from play by the human.

Q: What about plot?
A: This is intended to be a GM-guided, not GM-engineered game. You are expected to loosely coordinate scenes and action with your fellow players. Each character has an intention: with humans it will be either to enjoy their time at the mansion or escape, depending on what they’ve seen. With monsters it is to terrorize. If a scene feels flat, don’t wait for someone else to take the initiative; do something to meet your character’s end-goal.

Q: Are all characters male?
A: Characters will be exclusively male-identified, and IF you wish to engage in smut, it will be homosexual in nature unless you write both roles or get otherwise creative. PLAYERS of all genders and sexualities are more than welcome. No offense to the other equally valid and amazing sexualities on here, but in an effort to pair people up and not have a lot of people without good ‘matches’ in the game, it is a restriction we feel is best. The GMs typically host games open to a variety of sexualities, so please consider our other games you like the style but don’t feel comfortable playing a male character.

Q: Is this a system game?
A: It is largely freeform, with character sheets designed primarily to help keep in mind what your character is good at, their abilities, and general attitudes. With that in mind we do ask that people keep to the relatively standard level of monsters/victims in horror films. Embrace the tropes! This isn't about having one monster walk into a room and take out a bunch of victims; it's about the terror, buildup, and violence. Discussion between victims and murderers is expected.

Q: Are we using face claims?
A: Yep! While there's more leeway when a monster is on the field, for the human appearances we'll be using the standard human face claims. Look to models, actors, or Instagram if you need ideas.

I will say one thing -
I'd like to address an elephant.

If you want to have people post twice a week and be reliable, it is my opinion that short posts shouldn't just be accepted, they should be encouraged and recommend. Not to stifle anyone's creative flow, but I've seen many a horror game around Spooctober, when people are in a spooky mood, fall flat when there come November. Suddenly they realize that they don't want to invest 3-6-10 paragraphs in their chiseled slime zombie.

Also I love the fact that we don't know who's a killer and who's a victim.

And yeah, short posts are definitely encouraged. If you're capable of banging something longer out quickly, fine, but I don't think as a rule most people are. Short and sweet can be all the more effective in horror, too. It's not meant to be an especially complex or deep game, but more for some casual fun.

So just to make it clear,

You're playing a reality TV contestant.  Why he is here is up to you:  It can be about the money, the fame, a reason to party... that part is up to you.

I don't know, would they?  Let's find out.  Hmm...

I doubt that there would be any conventional form of television show that would allow that to happen in.  If for the purposes of your character (or just a kink...) you want some sort of underground network that can see it, we can talk.  Assume it will at least be found footage for the sake of recording.

4. I may have missed it, but how long do these murders go on? Is it a one-bloody-nights sort of deal (which would answer no 2) or over the course of the show's runtime?

To be honest, we aren't sure how successful or how much interest there will be.  If everything wraps up in a night it will be a night; we're open to prolonging it if there are enough players and characters in the cast to do so.  Given the nature of the game we can only keep playing while there are  survivors hanging around.

Apparent Age: Somewhere in the ballpark of late thirties, early forties.

Personality: Richard, or RJ as his friends call him, is a fun man to be around, when he likes you. He has a magnetic personality and he can get along with almost anyone, although some might view him as arrogant and abrasive. Does not enjoy being put in the sideline or being overshadowed.
Background: No one really knows where Richard came from, no one really cared enough to try and find out. He has arrived at Hollywood nearly twelve years ago, and like most small time actors, he started out with themed restaurants, musical cruises and soon indie and even mainstream theater. Problem is, he never managed to advance beyond those. Never broke out, no matter how hard he worked or which wheels he greased. Joining Solar Boys was his agent’s idea of putting him on the Hollywood agenda and fighting off that ‘aging has-been that never have been’ curse. Make him seem more approachable to the younger audience.

Personality: Snarky and outspoken, people are well aware of Nate’s thorny disposition. He will taunt and abuse those that make themselves easy targets, and he will do it all in the name of his reality TV popularity. And also because most people are just lame.
Background: There’s no anonymity for this guy, and this is not his first reality rodeo. This trash-tv star has been the reality’s bad boy for the past five years, breaking out on Survivor, where he went and won it, he has been constantly on the tabloids agendas. Every other week another scandal, every other day a Youtube upload going viral with just as many likes as there are dislikes. Nate relishes being in the center of controversy, and he’s infamous in driving people into embarrassing tirades in front of live cameras. He had disappeared for a couple months now, following the tragic suicide of a contestant he often bullied on his recent Reality appearance (‘Help! I Can’t Cook!’). The woman killed herself several months after the show was aired, due to him and his online followers mocking and basically turning her into a nation wide joke. She explicitly named him in her viral suicide video, and this is Nate’s first appearance since the story broke out.

For those of you not done with your concepts don't stress, we fully intend to allow characters of all types in while the game is rolling.  Given the nature of play by post, if you get it in soon, your character probably won't even be fasionably late.

That's a perfectly valid question and something specific to how I think of things, now that you point it out.  Regardless,, by relevant kinks I meant anything that you particularly see applying to THIS character, horror-based or not.

You are free to fill it out any way you want.  :)  That certainly works.  Like I say, my idiosynchratic wording was only there to allow someone to specify if they particularly wanted to see a kink linked to a specific character, rather than anything more generalized.

Relevant Kinks (if applicable due to above answers): I am very sexually open minded and interested in almost any sexual act. However, the kinks directly relevant to this character are exhibitionism, physical manhandling such as dragging a character into a desired position or simply overpowering them. Bondage is another relevant kink. It should be noted that I have only recently begun to dabble in the more extreme side to sex so am not 100% sure as to what exactly I wish to try out in this RP. If something comes to mind I will discuss it when it comes up, provided it is not something others have already vetoed. Just a quick update to our very few rules.   For the moment Xurtan and I have removed the rule that players have to alternate between monsters and victims/'final boys' if they wish to create more than one character.  This might once again change over time depending on how our active population of each looks at a given moment. (As you can surmise given the decision, we have a better-than-expected natural balance st this time.)
