I'm going to try this again as it is something that I really would love to do! The last one kind of fizzled out...  :'( I'm looking for maybe three to four people at minimum to create a story about ancient gods living in modern times. I chose New Orleans, Louisiana as the setting, but am more than willing to discuss other options. Your character can be from any religion. I want the story to be open to characters of any gender or sexual orientation and does not have to be limited to the gods/goddesses. If you have a creature you'd like to play, by all means, fill out a character sheet and shoot me a PM. Multiple characters are also allowed, even encouraged! I love playing multiples.

Now, I will say that one issue we seemed to run into the last go round is multiple gods/goddesses of the same kind. So, as characters are approved, please be considerate of who got there first. For example, if there is already a harvest deity, maybe try one that does something else? I understand that many of the ancient gods had multiple jobs, but I'm talking about their main deal. For example, Ra and Apollo? Both sun gods. Both awesome, but maybe not the best idea to have together? But, again, we can work on this together!

Furthermore, as far as their abilities go, these are weakened versions of the deities. If you have seen the movie Wrath of the Titans then you know about what I'm about to say. As humans stopped praying to the gods, they lost much of their powers over the centuries. Please keep this in mind when you pick out their special skills.

I'll post mine in the next post for an example. :3

"But Spirit, what do I need to do??"

Simple! :D

1) Fill out a Character Sheet and PM it to me. We can sort out character details.
2) If approved, we'll start discussing details of the story and start world building.

That's pretty much it. Yay for being simple!

Now, What kind of themes are we looking at?

As I said, I prefer to create this world with my partners so I only have the bare minimum of stuff here. If this seems like something you're interested in, but aren't sure, we can talk before you begin a character. I'll answer any questions I can! I only bite when asked! :P I will say that I don't want to be too restrictive here. I think that once we have some people interested, we can, as a group, decide what we will and won't let be part of the story and that will be added to a later post.

Sidenote: There will be no Anubis or Osiris characters anywhere in this story, aside from perhaps a passing mention by Apep. I have personal reasons for this so I would appreciate keeping them absent from the story. Thanks.

EDIT: There will be no more characters accepted from the Greek/Roman or Egyptian pantheons.

SAMPLE CHARACTERS

Spiritfox
Name: Apep
Alias:
Appeared Age: 26
Sex: Male
Sexual preference: Bisexual, but prefers men
Species: God
Origin: Egypt
Brief History: Apep was the ancient Egyptian god of destruction and chaos, the epitome of all that was evil in the world. He was known as "The Great Serpent" and "The Great Destroyer." It was said he waited at the horizon every morning for the boat carrying the sun god, Ra, to pass by and that Ra had to defeat him each day in order for the sun to rise again. These tales stem from a prank gone wrong that sent the mortals of the age into a wild hysteria when Apep jokingly swallowed Ra's ship as it was high in the sky one day... inadvertently creating the solar eclipse... Furious with the supposed "disrespect" shown to him, Ra cast Apep to the bottom of the Egyptian totem pole, painting him as harbinger of destruction and discouraging mortals from worshipping the serpent deity.

Unlike most of the ancient Pantheons, when the Egyptian Pantheon fell from popularity it retained its previous hierarchy. This angered Apep and he fled Egypt, vowing to never again allow someone else to have dominion over his life. He's travelled the world over for centuries, reestablishing himself each time he settles in a new place. Honoring the event that labelled him as a god of chaos and evil, Apep plans his movements based on the cycle of the solar eclipse, appearing in the place that offers the best view of the celestial phenomena.
Personality: Apep doesn't quite live up to the reputation the Old World developed for him. Truthfully, he's more the playful trickster than the infamous destroyer, but you play one prank and the whole of the universe never lets you live it down. Which is fine by him. Snarky and arrogant, this green-eyed devil plays by his rules and his alone.
Likes:
General- Apep has a thing for motorcycles and, secretly, has a soft spot for cats. He's drawn to people with a knack for mischief.
Sexual- Intelligence - He loves someone who can play on his level. Rough sex - Whether he's manhandling a woman, or being manhandled by a man, Apep likes to play a little rough.
Dislikes:
General- Authority, Mortals, the beach...
Sexual- Submission - He might be on the receiving end of things, but don't mistake it. Implants - Total buzzkill to grab silicone. Bathroom play - Seriously. Don't do it. He'll throat punch you.
Special Abilities: Apep's gaze can hypnotize those with a weaker mental constitution than himself. He can use this to bend people to his will, leaving them dazed and confused afterwards.
O/O:

Name: Pele
Alias: "Penelope" amongst mortals
Appeared Age: 23
Sex: Female
Sexual preference: Men (Mostly)
Species: Goddess
Origin: Hawaii
Brief History: Pele was the Hawaiian goddess of fire and volcanoes. She is the one credited with the creation of the islands of Hawaii. It was said she could change form,  often appearing as a young, beautiful woman, an elderly old woman, or as a large white dog. She is also a patron goddess of hula dancing. After a falling out with one of her sisters, Pele chose to leave Hawaii rather than risk a confrontation. She is extremely family oriented and as much as she hated to leave them behind, she would rather live in exile than have her family torn apart because of her.

Pele is still worshipped in Hawaii by the natives of the islands, but has more or less "retired" since her departure, preferring to spend her days sharing her passion for dancing with children at her dance studio or staying home and using to her pyrokinesis to create glass figurines and other trinkets. She sells her creations to raise money for a charity that helps fund art programs for schools.
Personality:  Despite a hidden feisty streak, she is a more laid back individual with a kind heart. Her friends are her family and mean more to her than life. She's more than willing to throw down to protect them. She's particularly protective of her mortal friends. Pele can be a bit of a klutz, particularly if she finds herself in a rush, which most of the time she is because this volcano goddess would be late for the apocalypse.
Likes:
General- Kids, animals, music, going out with friends
Sexual- Intelligent, strong-willed men with a good sense of humor. She also enjoys the look of a full figured woman. She doesn't necessarily want to sleep with them, she just likes to look.
Dislikes:
General- Arrogant motherflippers, People who are cruel for no reason, and people who claim pineapple doesn't belong on pizza
Sexual- Boring people or testosterone-fueled meatheads
Special Abilities: Pyrokinesis and shape-shifting.
O/O:

Quick, general question.  Would the game involve gods interacting primarily, or exclusively, with other gods?  Is there an element of them interacting with humans?

Well, I imagine they would have to interact with humans to some extent. For example, my character Pele likes humans and mingles with them regularly. Apep, on the other hand, does not care much for them, perhaps even has a slight superiority complex? Humans, with the exception of maybe a few, don't know their true identities though.

Was this helpful?

Very helpful, thank you. It does lead me to another question, though.  Are humans NPC's or do you want players as humans and as gods?  Thanks for taking this question in the request thread, others may want to know, too.

I am open to any charcters as long as I feel they will be a good fit. I have no issue if someone wants to have a human character. Primarily, I think humans will be background or minor characters though.

New Orleans and a Voodoo practitioner, or diety sounds fun.  Planting interest flag.

Edit...

Will make a character sheet request for Baron Samedi, a Voodoo god of the dead, undertaker type.  He's a bit of a debauchery, rum, cigars and dirty jokes kind of fellow.  Should be interesting to see how that works.  I think he is different enough from Apep, and will make sure to steer h clear from being very similar. His hand form will be a bit of an older guy than Apep, too.

It might be a day or so before my sheet is prepped, just posting the intent if it warrants discussion.

I wouldn't mind the opportunity to play Tamayori-hime again.  Didn't get to explore any of the layers beneath the kawaii last time  :P

Absolutely! Take your time. No rush!

Sounds great tangerine! I was really bummed that the last one didn't take off, so if you're up for trying again I would love to have the pastry dragon back! :P

ExposedFox

Got my character sheets done for a Roman Goddess and Greek God!

Spiritfox09

I scanned over your characters and they look great so far guys. I'll be able to take a better look tomorrow when I'm not chasing after kids! x.x

Sparky01

Awesome.  The Voodoo dude I submitted just seemed like fun and was inspired much for the sake of him being New Orleans icon.

I am interested to see how the characters shape up and the Dynamics for working together / pairings. When I know more I will most likely want to add another in the mix depending on the group need or where a hole might exist for pairings.

This is a very fun concept and I'm looking forward to seeing it in action.

Yay!!

Collaborating on a little world building could spark some musings as to where these character live and socialize.

I am imagining some owning plantations just outside of New Orleans, or maybe residents of the Garden District or French Quarter.  I mentioned Sam 'working part time' in a Voodoo shop.  I could extend that to being his own place with a residence attached and he comes and goes as a owner.  I wouldn't imagine most retired gods need a job, but it's something to do in retirement for him.

Just throwing out stuff for the group to chew on, if it is helpful.

Social places like a club in the Quarter or a Mansion in the Garden District and other such places could be tagged in headers in in-game posts?

tangerine

Hehe, my introductory post will probably be 80% copy-and-pasted from the old thread.

But long story short, Tamayori opened a Japanese bakery at the edge of the French District, near the Tulane and Louisiana State campuses.

Spiritfox, I was wondering if for scenario-building, if we'd be interested at some point to throw in a portent or omen with a related mystery or even a potential danger in the mix?  Something that might fit the mystical/voodoo history of New Orleans?

In our last attempt at this RP, we decided that there would a party for any and all things of the non-human variety. All the characters gathered together so that we could kind of get all the introductions done in one go. We could potentially do something of that nature again if everyone is in agreement? Or, if anyone has any other ideas, I'm open to hear them! I love bouncing ideas! :D

And, Sparky, that is exactly what I did with Pele. She owns a dance studio and she lives in a studio apartment right above it!

I have never actually been to New Orleans, though it as always been on my list of places to go... so I will probably be relying on Google and your experiences. :P (I think I remember you saying you had been right?? *still waking up*)

I was considering this as well, Tangerine. I stumbled upon an Aztec god that I think might make an interesting antagonist, but I'm still doing some research into this. Was there anything in particular that you had in mind?

Sparky01

Sounds great.  Bakery, dance studio, voodoo shop so far all in a wonderful city.

Yes, I have been a dozen or so times. Mostly during Jazz Fest, which is a major tourist draw in early spring.

A party sounds like a good idea to mix. It seems easy to administer. I am also supportive of a group wide plots, like a mystery, and will participate in either option as the group decides.

Hehe, my knowledge of New Orleans is largely limited to (a) staring at google maps, and (b) watching season 1 of Marvel's Cloak and Dagger.
That show had a dangerous natural (or unnatural?) force that threatened to unleash on the city from irresponsible drilling

Other completely half-baked ideas floating in my head for a potential mystery or threat (these are all barely on the drawing board)
- secret organization (run either by a god or a human who discovered our existence) who seeks to capture/manipulate us for economic or scientific or powerhungry purposes (Tamayori would be a prime target for kidnapping by such a group).
- an entity who retained far more of her/his/its original power than any of us suffering amnesia, and/or emotional/power instability.  May or may not be an actual antagonist.  We might not even recognize it at first, but weird things tend to happen in the vicinity.
- or a force or power awakening in the Gulf of Mexico.  Not Godzilla.  I like the idea that we're still trying to keep our identities under wraps, but have a sense of foreboding, and will see effects in the city and in the people.
- or all of the above... the secret organization might be after the power or something....  And Spiritfox, your Aztec god could be a combo of the awakened power and amnesiac entity ideas?

If any of these spark anyone's imaginations ... ;D

Sparky01

Tangerine mentioned an interesting fact, about keeping identities secretive.  I suppose the world at large would view anyone claiming to be an ancient god as a loon.

Let me ask, is that the reason to do so?

Sinister plots on behalf of a GM can be taxing, more than mere sandbox play. I do like the notion of sinister forces at work, or some power play.

Coincidentally, I was looking for inspiration for a second and was considering a Muse / Goddess of Music and a way to make her interesting. However, I got on a jag of looking up Medusa.  She died, and was mortal. However, she has two immortal sisters.  Made me think, turn one of them into a total goth bad-ass type.  Maybe tough and misunderstood and, well, her and her family's falling out with Athena way back when made them (her and her sisters) a bit ... unpopular.

So, I throw the thought out there as fodder for conversation.  I suppose there are all sorts of sinister characters who could try to subvert our otherwise peaceful hide out of New Orleans.

I may be rambling a bit, but really just offering ideas of types or tropes Not sure if I want to play a sister of Medusa or not, yet.  I suppose it depends on if anyone would want to interact with (what I would perceive) as a wrong-side-of-the-tracks type. I see her as total goth / alternative.

Yep, it's official, I'm rambling. No...no...I'm ...brainstorming.
Happy to collaborate on what sticks.

lol I usually like to go for that type but one of the ideas that I'm considering (I have about five on my list that I'm narrowing down) actually is Athena.  So if you do have a sister of Medusa, I think I might be more persuaded to actually create Athena.  Although right now, her Roman "counterpart": Bellona, is leading the fight within myself.
